    Understanding course requirements

    Also consider:

    Do you have room left for electives? How will you best use thisallowance?

    1. Identify your planned future science area(s) of study. Each will

    require at least a pair of units in first year.

    2. Check the sequence and prerequisite requirements for the units.You can find this information in the handbook:http://monash.edu/pubs/handbooks/

    Find out What pair of units you need to complete in first year

    Are there any additional requirements?

    3. Check you are enrolling in two level-one approved sciencesequences

    Why study mathematical sciences?

    Mathematics and statistics provide the language in which all other sciences (as well as

    engineering, IT and business) can be described or measured.

    "Do as much Mathematics and Statistics as you can in your degrees - these skills will

    empower your professional lives." . Sir Gustav Nossal

    Where will it take you?

    Mathematics and statistics will help you to:

    Think logically and clearly;

    Apply a broad range of problem-solving strategies;

    Use data and other quantitative information effectivelyacross a range of scientific and technical disciplines;

    Understand our world and universe;

    Analyse, model and improve systems;

    Study the beauty and perfection of theory in nature and the sciences;

    Gain a good starting salary;

    Find satisfying employment in the banking, finance and insurance industries, in IT,

    Atmospheric Science

    Monash University is one of the few places that offers studies

    towards a major in Atmospheric Science. This program is offered

    jointly with the School of Geography and Environmental Science.

    Specialist studies in Atmospheric Science start from level two, but

    there is a level-one unit available:

    MON1001Climate change: An interdisciplinary challenge

    An introduction to the science of climate change, offered in second

    semester only. This is an elective and is nota prerequisite for

    studying any level-two units in Atmospheric Science.

    Prerequisites for level-two Atmospheric Science:

    Essential:a level-one mathematics sequence, including MTH1030.

    Recommended:one level-one unit in either physics or chemistry.
