spreads into foreign markets.-- Spreading Ayurveda --Ayurvedic medicine --

which means the "science oflife" in Sanskrit -- treats thephysical and mental sourcesof illness through, for exam-ple, prescribing herbs in con-junction with yoga or

massage.Much of the knowl-

edge, passed on by wordof mouth, predates writ-ten records, but two vol-umes of remedies andprescriptions have sur-vived called the CarakaSamhita and theSushruta Samhita.

"This is where it allbegins, these herbaltexts that were handeddown 3,000 years ago,"

said Haydon."We look at the kind of

combinations (of herbs) thatare suggested and from thatpoint onwards we have agroup of scientists who bringcontemporary medicine andscience to those texts."

The group now has 75remedies, including treat-ments for hypertension, kid-ney stones and cholesterol.

An estimated 80 percentof India's 1.2-billion popula-tion uses Ayurvedic medi-cine, partly for cost reasons,with a pack of 100 Liv 52tablets selling for just 65 ru-pees ($1.20).

To raise its profile and rev-enues, Himalaya branchedout in 1996 into consumerproducts such as shampoosand sun cream.

Like the pharmaceuticals, these use herbs such as neem,a tree known as a "villagepharmacy" in rural India dueto the range of its medicinalproperties.

Dotted around India butcentred in the temperatefoothills of the Himalayas,4,000 producers of leaves, roots and plants are busyfarming for the group onlong-term contracts.

-- Competition --The rejection of the "alter-

native" tag is partly borne ofbitter experience in the West, where regulations on phar-maceuticals mean Himalaya'sproducts are classed as foodsupplements and thus stockedalongside other treatmentsthat Haydon dismisses as"feel-good products".

If Himalaya must be con-sidered "alternative", he saysit should be seen only as analternative to multi-nationalpharmaceutical firms.

"We are competing withGlaxoSmithKline, Beechamsand AstraZeneca. They haveproducts for diabetes, so dowe. They have products forhepatitis, so do we," he says.

Overall, the resources aretiny compared with a giantlike GlaxoSmithKline whichrecorded a $7.0-billion profitlast year.

And Himalaya holds amere eight patents having"got out of the patent race"because they offered littleprotection fromcompetitors whocould simplycopy a combina-tion, add a newherb and thenclaim it as a dif-ferent product.

Jon Tilburt, an expert onmodern Western and tradi-tional medicine at the MayoClinic healthcare group in theUnited States, says he under-stands why Himalaya rejectsthe "alternative" label.

"There are plenty of herbalcompanies and all of them insome ways would like tohave the esteem of a pharma-ceutical company but thennone of them wants the regu-latory burden," he told AFP.

"They really want theirown category of a sort of ex-ecutive club for herbal play-ers."

Generally the scientificevidence on alternative med-icine is mixed, he said, echo-ing the World HealthOrganisation which hascalled for more funding totest traditional treatmentsfrom India, Africa or China.

And there are potentialdangers that give the herbalindustry a bad name.

A study published thismonth by Graham Lord, aprofessor of medicine atKing's College London, warned about remedies oncesold but now banned in theWest that contain aristolochicacids linked to kidney failure.

"Herbal remedies aroundthe world are not legislated asmedicines," he told AFP. "Be-cause it's herbal, it's not nec-essarily safe."

But for Himalaya, the fu-ture appears bright -- not leastbecause the domestic drugsmarket is growing at an an-nual rate of 15 percent, ac-cording to the Confederationof Indian Industries.

WASHINGTON (AFP) -NASA wants to grab a smallasteroid and tow it into orbitaround the moon, as part of along-range plan towards es-tablishing permanent mannedoutposts in space, accordingto a US senator.

To get the project off theground, US President BarackObama will propose around$100 million for the USspace agency in his 2014budget, which he submits toCongress on Wednesday,Senator Bill Nelson said in astatement.

"This is part of what willbe a much broader program,"the Florida Democrat ex-plained.

"The plan combines thescience of mining an asteroid, along with developing waysto deflect one, along withproviding a place to developways we can go to Mars."

The plan calls for a ro-botic-spacecraft to capturethe asteroid and tow it backtowards Earth, ultimatelyleaving it in a stable orbitaround the moon, closeenough that, within eightyears, astronauts could headon over.

A similar plan was initiallyproposed in 2012 by experts atthe California Institute ofTechnology, and the group, along with other top re-searchers in the field, havesince prepared a detailed studyinto the project's feasibility.

"It would be mankind'sfirst attempt at modifying theheavens to enable the perma-nent settlement of humans inspace," scientists said in theirreport.

Obama's goal of sending amanned mission to a near-Earth asteroid by 2025 is im-possible given NASA'scurrent and projected fundinglevels, expert analysis hassuggested.

But using an unmannedvehicle to instead bring a500-ton asteroid close tohome could change the gameand get humans to an asteroidas early as 2021, four yearsahead of the deadline.

Once there, "there could bemining activities, researchinto ways of deflecting an as-teroid from striking Earth, and testing to develop tech-nology for a trip to deepspace and Mars," Nelson'sstatement said.

TOKYO (AFP) - Scientists inJapan said recently they hadfound a way to "read" people'sdreams, using MRI scanners tounlock some of the secrets ofthe unconscious mind.

Researchers have managedwhat they said was "theworld's first decoding" ofnight-time visions, the subjectof centuries of speculation thathave captivated humanitysince ancient times.

In the study, published inthe journal Science, re-searchers at the ATR Compu-tational NeuroscienceLaboratories, in Kyoto, west-ern Japan, used magnetic res-onance imaging (MRI) scansto locate exactly which part ofthe brain was active during thefirst moments of sleep.

The scientists then woke upthe dreamers and asked themwhat images they had seen, aprocess that was repeated 200times.

These answers were com-pared with the brain maps thathad been produced by the MRIscanner, the researchers said, adding that they later built adatabase, based on the results.

On subsequent attemptsthey were able to predict whatimages the volunteers hadseen with a 60 percent accu-racy rate, rising to more than70 percent with around 15 spe-cific items including men,

TV startup shakesup US broadcasters

with court win WASHINGTON (AFP) - Astartup whose business modelis based on tiny antennas re-ceiving over-the-air televi-sion for online viewing bysubscribers has put the USbroadcast industry on the de-fensive.

Aereo made headlines onApril 1 with a preliminarycourt victory over the majorbroadcasters, which hadsought to shut down the serv-ice for copyright infringe-ment.

The case, which is stillpending, is seen by some as apotentially groundbreakingtest: for consumers, whetherthey can "shift" TV viewingto the Web through a thirdparty; and for broadcasters, whether they can maintaincontrol of their content.

Aereo, which is backed bymedia mogul Barry Diller, launched in early 2012 in theNew York area and was im-mediately sued by the majorbroadcast networks -- ABC,NBC, CBS and Fox -- forcopyright infringement.

The company claims itsactions are legal, because it isnot rebroadcasting, but giv-ing subscribers a personal an-tenna in its New Yorkwarehouse that enables themto watch live TV or record itfor later viewing.

A US appeals court panelagreed with Aereo, in a pre-liminary decision on a re-quest for an injunction to shutdown the service. A full hear-ing in the case is still pend-ing.

The court ruled 2-1 thatAereo was not retransmitting"public performances,"which would be bannedunder copyright law, butmerely allowing customers torent antennas to receive andrecord free broadcasts.

was a key step towards read-ing dreams more precisely."

His team is now trying topredict other dream experi-ences such as smells, coloursand emotion, as well as entirestories in people's dreams.

"We would like to intro-duce a more accurate methodso that we can work on a wayof visualising dreams," hesaid.

Kamitani, however, admitsthat there is still a long way togo before they are anywherenear understanding a wholedream.

He said the decoding pat-terns differ for individuals andthe database they have devel-oped cannot be applied gener-ally, rather it has to begenerated for each person.

"As you know, US law ex-pressly prohibits the licensingof financial transactions for'tourist activities' in Cuba,"the pair wrote.

The lawmakers went on tosay that these restrictionswere in place because theCuban government was listedby the US State Departmentas one of four state sponsorsof terrorism and has "one ofthe world's most egregious"human rights records.
