The California-Hawaii Elks Major Project, Inc. ("CHEMPI") supports the unmet needs of children with disabilities throughout the states of California and Hawaii. It offers two charitable programs through the Bequests and Living Trusts ("BLT") Committee. The Bequests and Living Trusts Benefactor Program recognizes the BLT Benefactors with a beautifully framed certificate and a distinctive triangular lapel pin. The BLT Commitment Trust Program provides the donor with a lifetime income and an income tax deduction.

Your District Bequests and Living Trusts (BLT) Chairman, William W. Chang, is available by appointment to answer any questions that you may have on these programs as well as on any topics related to retirement and estate planning. For more information or to make an appointment, please call Bill at (310) 375-2295.

For those who think our lodge membership is lagging, I am very happy to report that 1670 members of the 2101 we started with on April 1st are current on their dues as of August 1st. Of these, 1458 members had paid for the

full year (through April 1st, 2016). This month is the time for both our 6-month payment members to send their remaining $130 for the year, and for our remaining 431 lapsed members to join us in providing the much needed support of their annual dues for our lodge to continue its monthly operations.

We have also had the pleasure of 20 new members and 6 reinstated members, not including those who went through our August class. These new and reinstated members have joined us to part of our future, and know as we do that while the road to our rebuild seems long now, we will be soon rejoicing as the lingering permitting process and subcontractor selections give way to our physical reconstruction and long-awaited reopening! This month’s issue should have a list of our lapsed members, not to embarrass them, but to hopefully help you and other San Pedro Elks seek them out to let them know we want them to be a part of this very special time in our lodge history.

I am often sent e-mails and messages through social media asking about the status of our lodge rebuild; nearly all of them by those who not only have not attended a Monday meeting in a long while. Most actually reject my invitation to come to a Monday meeting; they claim to be “too busy” or “uninterested in regular meetings”. “Just get the pool and bar open”, they demand; many are lapsed members who tell me that they’ll either pay later or reinstate when our lodge is rebuilt. While these few who have forgotten what Elkdom is truly about sometimes make my blood boil, I am humbled and proud of our many more members who step up each month to volunteer wherever they are needed. Among those: our Ruf-Neks, Veterans BBQ helpers, our “faithful 40” who make every meeting they can, and our Lodge Officers and Trustees who are doing everything in their power to keep our rebuild moving forward. It will be all of them who I will remember long after our lodge is rebuilt and I tell the stories of our trials and triumphs. It will be to them I will always toast. I thank all of you for being counted among them.

A Message from Leading Knight, John Stammreich

As summer comes to an end, I hope that everyone has many wonderful and memorable times with their family and

friends. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank our Exalted Ruler Jose Chavez as even though it is summertime and has his own business, he has dedicated endless time and effort with meetings, emails, and phone calls all dealing with the rebuild processes of our beloved Elks Lodge. The Officer Corps as well as our Trustees have also dedicated a great deal of their time, too. A special thank you goes to Trustee Chairman Mike Bennison for all he has done and continues to do for our Lodge. Thank you to our Office Staff, Ruff Neks and our members for their time in volunteering for various lodge activities. And last but not least, thank you to all who have faithfully showed up to our Monday night meetings. San Pedro Elks lodge has had and continues to enjoy much support and dedication from its membership.

I would like to wish everyone an enjoyable Labor Day. May God Bless You and Yours.

Fraternally yours, Lucia Scerra-Nania

A Message from Loyal Knight, Julia Aquino

“We cannot stop the winter or the summer from coming. We cannot stop the spring or the fall or make them other than they are. They are gifts from the universe that we cannot refuse. But we can choose what we will contribute to life when each arrives.”

Gary Zukav

Although we are still in our time of need we are very appreciative of everyone’s support. We truly appreciate all of the loyal long-time members who continue to pay their dues and our new members who have been joining by the handful.

If you are in doubt of your membership status, now is the time to check it out. A list of lapsed members has been included in this issue.

The Ruff Neks are holding a Chili Tasting contest on Saturday, October 10, 2015. The actual time has yet to be determined, so watch for updates. As we do not have a kitchen, the chili will need to be prepared ahead of the event and served from crockpots. And, there will be 3 cash prizes awarded. Hamburgers, hotdogs and beverages will be on sale and we will set up canopies over the tables and chairs in the parking lot. Entertainment will be provided by Art and Lori Johnson.

In parting members, please know that everything is going according to plan for the rebuilding of our Lodge. And, as you all well may know, these things do take time!

“Love and peace from, the station of Justice,” Julia Aquino

A Message from Lecturing Knight, Lucia Serra-Nania

Public Relations Committee Please send Patti Folsom-Medina your write-ups and photos of recent events or information for upcoming events and let’s enjoy seeing the San Pedro Elks Lodge listed in not only our local newspaper, but our Elks National and CHEA magazines, too. I can also use group photos with good ‘faces’ that people take at our events. Please be sure to give me the names (and titles) of everyone in the photo(s). Photos must be in either a ‘.jgp’ format or full-size ipad, no cell phone photos as they are too tiny. Please contact me with summaries of your latest event so that I may send them in for publication in our magazines. You may contact her via email at [email protected] and if you do not have email, you may call her during the evenings or weekends at 310-521-0431 (leave a message if she is not home).

COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS – TIME TO APPLY!

San Pedro Elks Lodge #966 is pleased to announce that the 2015-16 Elks National Foundation (ENF) scholarship campaigns begin on September 1st. Applications must be initiated, and program details can be found at: www.elks.org/enf/scholars.

The ENF sponsors two primary programs – Most Valuable Student (MVS) and Legacy. The MVS program is open to any high school senior. The MVS program remains open to any high school senior who is a US citizen. Applicants must excel in academics (test scores are crucial), leadership, have strong work experience, and show devotion to their community. Only 10% of an applicant’s profile is scored for financial need. MVS seeks to find the future leaders of America and can provide for scholarships at the local Lodge, District, State, and National levels of judging. The ENF will provide 500 four-year scholarships to the highest rated applicants under the MVS program.

MVS applicants turn in their applications to the Elks Lodge nearest to their residence (vs. school). This link has a Lodge Locator to help: http://www.elks.org/. Prior to submitting to another Lodge, it is critical that MVS applicants confirm with that Lodge Secretary that their Lodge participates. If not, the student will need to seek an alternative Lodge. Lodge 966 is fully committed to the MVS program and is happy to judge any applicant from the numerous high school seniors living within our jurisdiction. Lodge 966 remains a standout in the MVS program by continuing to provide awards at the local level of judging. While other Lodges may participate, they may not provide local awards and just advance winners to the next level. MVS applications are due December 4, 2015.

The Legacy program is only open to high school students who are a child/grandchild (including step children/grandchildren) of an active Elks Member. The Legacy program provides for 250 scholarships and applicants are judged on Knowledge, Charity, Community, and Integrity. Should you have a family member who will apply for a Legacy award, please let us know so we can track their progress and ensure they receive recognition if they win. Legacy applications are submitted online directly to the ENF and are due by January 29, 2016.

The Dog Days of Summer -The Heat is ON!(Tips for keeping cool in the heat.)

Take care of yourself and your loved ones during this end of summer season. When the weather gets warmer, you need to be mindful of many things. The following are recommendations from the American Red Cross about how to beat the heat:

HOT CARS CAN BE DEADLY Never leave the elderly, children or pets in your vehicle. The inside temperature of the car can quickly reach 120 degrees. Other heat safety steps include:• Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Consider water

and exercise beverages like Gatorade. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol. (At least drink one glass of water in between one glass of alcoholic beverages.)

• Avoid extreme temperature changes.• Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Avoid

dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays.• Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise

during the hottest part of the day.• Postpone outdoor games and activities.• Use a buddy system when working in excessive heat. Take

frequent breaks if working outdoors.• Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air

conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.

• Check on animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat. Make sure they have plenty of cool water.

If someone doesn’t have air conditioning, they should choose places to go to for relief from the heat during the warmest part of the day (schools, libraries, movie theaters, malls). Luckily, we have a mall with an Ice Skating Rink nearby in Palos Verdes and there are tables where you could dine, read or simply relax and watch the skating.

Save the Date - Saturday, October 10th, 2015 for our“Burned Down NOT Burnt Out” Chili Cook-Off

This will be a Crockpot-style chili “tasting." We will have hot dogs and hamburgers for sale; Lori and Art Johnson have agreed to provide the music; and of course this will be a fundraiser. Probably the rebuild fund. This will be under our new tents and will be a daytime event. We would love to have ALL OF OUR MEMBERSHIP COME OUT AND VISIT AND SEE THE PROGRESS THAT WE HAVE MADE.

More information to come in next month’s Six Bells!

The Elks National Foundation, allocates each year funds to the Community Investments Program. The Lodge can meet local needs in our Elk community through Beacon, Gratitude, Promise and Impact Grants. These grants offer the Lodge opportunities to serve the community in ways that will raise the Lodge's profile, energize membership and gain the notice of people who want to be part of an organization that's doing great things. As San Pedro #966 Grant Coordinator, our first grant for 2015 was the Gratitude Grant for $2,000.00. I chose Harbor Interfaith Services. We purchased 90 school back packs, filled with school supplies for local school age children K thru 12th grade. Harbor Interfaith Services, helps homeless and low income families.  They were thrilled to be selected for the children who will benefit from our generosity. Thank you to Jim, Debi, Linda, Bob, Eleanor, Robert for helping prepare the back packs. Thank you to Peggy, Art and Lori; for helping handing them out to the children. Mallory Hartt - Grant Coordinator

Other Generous Donations from our Lodge:• Eric Hansen donated $120.00 for two bikes for

"Bikes 4 Marines and Navy kids" at Camp Pendleton for the Goal of 300 for Christmas 2015.

• Bonnie Hasselfeld, donated $100.00 for appetizers for Saturday August 15th at the Lodge; when the State President visits.

• Don Donato, donated various supplies for the school supplies donated in the back packs in the Gratitude Grant Project.
