oversees Anniston’s fledgling public transit system, a small fleet of buses and vans, run by a contractor with 18 employ-ees, he said. At peak traffic, Christian said, the transit system might have five buses and four vans on the road.

But when the buses aren’t running, they have to be parked somewhere. Christian said they’re currently parked in the lot near Wakefield’s, but the agen-cy has to rent that property. The new lot will change that.

The project cost $530,000 in stimulus money, including purchase of the prop-erty, filling in the basement and paving the site. The property was last listed in county tax records at a value of about $163,000.

Christian said EARPDC first filed for stimulus funds for the project in 2009. He expects the project to be done in April.

Some pain, no gain for Club Fitness customers

Customers of Club Fitness, a Jack-sonville gym, got a surprise when they showed up for their workouts early last week.

A letter taped to the door of the gym said, “We have made the decision to permanently close Club Fitness.”

“We have tried to delay this as long as we could and see the economy turn around,” said the letter, signed by man-ager Deborah Neal. The note also cites the “personal and economic storms we have endured for the past three years.”

Attempts to reach Neal were unsuc-cessful, so it’s impossible to know what those “personal storms” are. But a 2009 issue of the Carrolton, Ga., Times-Geor-gian contains a glowing feature obituary of Harold Neal, owner of several West

Georgia businesses. That’s the same Harold Neal listed in state business records as the owner of the Jacksonville gym.

The obituary says that Harold Neal, son of a West Virginia coal miner, fought as a Marine in Vietnam and then settled in Carollton, building cell phone busi-nesses, a manufacturing company and Club Fitness.

The Club Fitness in Carrollton, the gym’s only other branch, is still in busi-ness, though staff there would not com-ment on the closing of the Jacksonville branch.

The letter on the door of the Jackson-ville gym says refunds will be issued to customers in 90 days. According to state records, the gym opened in 2002.

Tex-Mex strikes againWhen times are bad, stick with the

old standards. That seems to be the lesson behind

the latest evolution of the restaurant for-merly known as the Matterhorn Grill.

Housed in a corner of Quintard Mall, Matterhorn opened in 2010 with an eclectic menu that featured dishes from around the world, in addition to stan-dard Southern fare. Then it closed and reopened under new management with French and Italian dishes. That version of the Matterhorn closed, too.

As of early March, the restaurant is the Red Pepper Grill. New owner Jeremy Rogers said the restaurant has a “whole new outlook.”

Apparently it’s a much simpler theme than before. Asked what the menu is, Rogers said, simply, “Tex Mex.” He said he’ll also serve you a steak if you want.

Jeremy Rogers is the brother of the owner of Loco Mex in Jacksonville. If you like Loco Mex, he said, you’ll like Red Pepper.

LINCOLN — Two people were killed and four injured in a three-vehicle crash in Tal-ladega County.

According to a report from Alabama state troopers, Sheila Cooper, 42, and Alyssa Coo-per, 14, both of Ohatchee, were killed in the crash Saturday evening. The two, who were in a 2000 Jeep that Sheila Cooper was driv-ing, had been taken to Citizens Hospital in Talladega after the crash.

Also injured in the Jeep was Leslie Coo-per, 19, of Ohatchee.

Injured in a second vehicle, a 2001 Chev-rolet, were three persons from Pell City. They, as well as Leslie Cooper, were all taken to Regional Medical Center in Anniston.

Those persons were Michael Herron, 23, listed as the driver in the trooper report; Christopher Gault, 35, and Catherine West-fall, 22.

Also involved in the accident but not injured was Brian Nunnelly of Ohatchee, who was driving a 2001 Honda.

The crash happened at 6:10 p.m. Satur-day on Mudd Street about four miles north-east of Lincoln.

Attalla man dies in U.S. 431 accidentA 51-year-old Attalla man was killed in a

traffic accident Sunday evening at the inter-section of U.S. 431 and Alabama 204.

Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown said Ian Kaufhold was the driver of a motorcycle that was involved in the accident with anoth-er vehicle. Brown did not know the nature of the involvement and Alabama State Troop-ers did not yet have a report available.

Brown pronounced Kaufhold dead at 5:30 p.m.

Brown said Kaufhold, who was wearing a helmet, was northbound on 431 when the accident occurred. He said a female pas-senger on the motorcycle was injured and flown from the scene to UAB Hospital in Bir-mingham.

river segments under the already existing programs will remove unnec-essary work overlap and help save taxpayer money.

“In any effort we undertake, we want to be good stewards of the envi-ronment,” Hughes said. “We feel the CERCLA and the RCRA are the best avenues to pursue these improve-ments.”

However, Chitwood said the RCRA and CERCLA were not designed to cover PCB cleanup efforts through-out all the designated segments of the Coosa. The change will mean insuffi-cient monitoring and cleanup efforts of parts of the Coosa or no cleanup

efforts at all, Chitwood argues. For instance, Lake Neely Henry

is far removed from the site of the RCRA program. As the Coosa flows away from Rome, Ga., and into Ala-bama, Weiss Dam separates the RCRA facility from Lake Neely Henry. The department has failed to show how PCB pollution on Lake Neely Henry is being addressed by the RCRA pro-gram, Chitwood said. This is because the RCRA program will not address PCB pollution on Lake Neely Henry, he said.

Hughes said if the proposed change does not lead to sufficient improve-ment of the Coosa, ADEM will alter its tactics.

“We will continue to collect data in that area and if we see we’re not making progress, we’ll certainly have

the ability to do something different,” Hughes said.

ADEM’s acceptance of public com-ments on the proposal ends March 13. The proposal can be read at ADEM’s website at www.adem.state.al.us.

Anyone who wants to submit com-ments or new information regarding the Draft 2012 Section 303(d) List can do so in writing to Joseph Roy, Water Division, Alabama Department of Environmental Management, P.O. Box 301463, Montgomery, Alabama 36130-1463 (street address: 1400 Coliseum Boulevard, Montgomery, Alabama, 36110-2059). Roy’s phone number is 334-270-5635 and his email address is [email protected].

14 killed in funeral bombing in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD —A bomb exploded at a funeral in northwest Pakistan Sunday, killing at least 14 people and injuring more than 30 others, health and police officials said.

The explosion took place in Badber, an area in the outskirts of Peshawar, as hundreds of people gathered for the funeral of the wife of a member of an anti-Taliban militia.

Rahim Jan, head of Lady Reading hospital, said 14 people had died and five of the injured were in a critical condition.

“We have found the lower part of a body, from which it seems a suicide attack” was involved, said Abdul Kalam, a senior police official.

Here are food service establishments recent-ly inspected by the Calhoun County Health Department, along with scores. A score of 100 indicates the inspector found no defi-ciencies. Potentially hazardous deficiencies (four- or five-point demerit items) are noted. These must be corrected immediately and inspectors say they are often corrected while the inspection is underway.
