Del Mar Derby result cont. Bounced away from the three hole by Tyler Baze,Midnight Storm took them along through evensectionals and was tracked by Sawyer=s Hill throughthree-quarters of a mile in a slow 1:12.50. He foundmore on the engine and was always holding Sawyer=sHill at bay. Talco closed from the tail to be third, whilefavored Enterprising (Elusive Quality) was left far toomuch to do by Mike Smith and flashed none of thebrilliance which saw him win the Oceanside S. and GIII LaJolla H., finishing about sixth. "I was very confident because I've never had a horsetrain for a race like this before,@ D=Amato said. AThe lastrace didn't take anything out of him. Tyler breezed himand he galloped out a mile in 1:39 and change and onlyreally good horses do that on this racetrack. He gaveme every indication he was going to give his best." Baze commented, "We weren't going that slow upthere; we were just comfortable. I knew this horse wasready. I worked him the other day five eighths and thenhad a strong mile gallop out. Phil trains them just likeMike [former trainer Mike Mitchell, who was D'Amato'smentor] used to. Sure was nice to go uncontested outthere. No pressure helps. This is the first time I've wonthis race. Del Mar has been good to me."

The RobertEvans colorbearer began her career under the care ofMark Frostad, where her accomplishments includedfinishing second in the 2012 Queen=s Plate, winning theBreeders= S., and finishing second in the GII Nassau S.last year. Since transferring into the ChristopheClement stable this season, Irish Mission finished last ofseven in the GIII Beaugay S. Mostrecently, she was runner-up in Monmouth=s GIII Matchmaker S. back at nine furlongs July 27.

Within strikingposition on the final bend, Irish Mission angled out tothe two path in the straight, engaged the pacesetter inthe final furlong, gained the advantage in the waningstrides and won going away. "I think she can do evenbetter than that,@ said winning trainer ChristopheClement. AI'm delighted because the filly deserves towin. Mr. [Robert] Evans, as you know, has been a bigsupporter of the stable with Tonalist and I'm delightedfor him. She's the most beautiful mare to look at. 4th-SAR, Hopeful S.-GI, $350,000, 2yo, 7f Sharm (Majestic Warrior) is improving as the distance increases.Bred to do well at a route of ground and most likely will run well hereand get a piece. Like this one more during the fall. Requite (Warrior’s Reward) flattered by Two Weeks Off romping onSaturday, and Da Jenius (Malibu Moon) finishing third. Fast colt wonwell first out validating all the LQQK & FQLLQW's we had on him. Hecan move forward again. I Spent It (Super Saver) showed something in Saratoga Special, hehad a ton of patience while being bogged down inside along rail andwhen opening came he shot through and won very professionally andstylishly. He most likely with clean run runs even faster that's always, however, a guessing game. The fact alone, he waited and patiently heldhimself together and then moved in tandem with his rider is a sign of avery smart and sensible colt. Competitive Edge (Super Saver) his maiden win was off the chartsand he has gotten more than 30 days off since, with three works in theholster. He has the look of one of the better colts on the grounds if not inNorth America. He is bred to win early, and bred to do his best now andthrough end of the year. He is Pletcher’s 2014 "Uncle Mo'', or ''ShanghaiBobby''. He wins the Hopeful and he is the one to beat in California inthe Breeders Cup Juvenile.

GETTING IN THE ZONE The fleet-footed Private Zone (Macho Uno) looks toget back into action in today=s GIII Turf Monster H.,which he=ll use as a springboard for his campaigntowards the GI Breeders= Cup Sprint. The Doug O=Neilltrainee took a similar path last year. After finishingninth in the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen in March, Private

He=s proven he can ship cross-countryeffectively and is given a 9-2 chance on the morningline. Whereas Private Zone will have to overcome acutback and surface change, the King Leatherbury-trained Ben=s Cat (Parker=s Storm Cat) is proven at thedistance, boasting 14 wins in 20 starts going fivepanels over the turf, and has already tallied fivevictories over the surface, including a last-out win inthe GIII Parx Dash H. Although the formerhas yet to return to the winner=s circle--most recentlyfinishing sixth in the GIII Parx Dash H. SO NICE THEY NAMED IT TWICEBy Kelsey Riley A town, Aso nice, you have to name it twice,@enthused Bill Clinton upon a visit to Baden-Baden, andindeed he was correct. Baden-Baden--which this weekplays host to the international horse racing communityfor tomorrow=s BBAG yearling sale--is perhaps

Germany=s answer toDeauville, France orSaratoga Springs. Itswinding maze ofcobblestone streetsare home to many aluxurious shop andgourmet restaurant, not to mention thefamous Kurhaus &Casino, and some ofthe spas it has become

renowned for--The Friedrichsbad and the CaracallaTherme. ABad@ is German for Aspa@, and Baden-Baden wasnamed for its famous springs more than 2000 yearsago. The town is situated in the German state ofBaden-Wurttemburg in southwestern Germany close tothe French border, a location that eases thetransportation of horses between the two countries.Baden-Baden has a population of close to 53,000, butswells with Thoroughbred enthusiasts late each Augustfor the racing and sales. These events do not actuallytake place in Baden-Baden, however--that honor goes tothe tiny town of Iffezheim some eight miles down theroad. Here we have the Iffezheim Racecourse, with thesales grounds as its backyard. Like Baden-Baden itself, Iwas warned that the racecourse is beautiful, and likeClinton, those who warned me were proven correct.Saturday=s racecard, which featured the G3Preis Der SparkassenFinanzgruppe, won bythe 4-year-old Dubawi(Ire) filly Nausica Time(Ger), drew a sizablecrowd to the racecourseunder sunny skies, andamazingly, the crowdappeared to stay on forSunday despite the deteriorating weather. A brief strollaround the racecourse revealed that there is trulysomething for everyone here, and the customers arewell catered for (this point was proven Saturday whenthe elevator to the press box broke down. cont. p15

We barely had time to resent to stair climbs for theremainder of the weekend when, voila, it was fixedwithin two hours). Saturday was >ladies day= at the racecourse, andthus, numerous hat stands figured amongst the varietyof makeshift shops scattered across the grounds. There

DURKIN THE TOAST OF SARATOGABy Mike Kane Tom Durkin didn=t go quietly. He left the crowd atrainy Saratoga Race Course roaring Sunday at the

conclusion of theretirement ceremony inthe winner=s circle tomark the end of hisdistinguished 43-yearcareer callingThoroughbred racing. After pausing brieflyto control his emotionswhile thanking fans fortheir support, Durkin, ever the performer, delivered one moretime, pumping his fistfor punctuation. AIt=s time to saygoodbye and say somefinal words into thismicrophone for one lasttime,@ he said. AI havechosen these wordsvery carefully and they

are these: Long live horse racing and long liveSaratoga.@ The thousands who had waited through the rain tosee Durkin honored, cheered and applauded. Durkin, 63, announced earlier this year that he wouldretire on Aug. 31, the next-to-last day of the Saratogaseason. He saidthat the time that24 years with theNew York RacingAssociation wasjust enough andone more might betoo many. NYRA turned hisfinal week at themicrophone into aTom Durkinlovefest, showingmany of his greatest calls between races. Durkin=s lastrace was the 123rd running of the GI Spinaway and hewent out in style, describing Condo Commando asAsplash-tastic@ during her 13 1/4-length triumph on asloppy track. While the filly was completing her journey throughthe stretch under jockey Joe Bravo, the crowd startedclapping and cheering--clearly to salute Durkin--andturned toward Durkin=s announcing booth above thefinish line. The crowd began chanting his name. Durkin received a standing ovation moments laterwhen he walked down the stairs in the clubhousetoward the winner's circle. He paused to wave to thecrowd and touched his right hand to his heart to showhis appreciation. cont. p16

AThe void created by your absence, Tom, will only beexceeded by the gratitude we have for the amazingmemories you have left with us. We will miss youdearly. Happy trails.@ The festivities began before the start of the racingprogram on a soggy gray day. Standing in the winner=scircle, Congressman Paul Tonko and Saratoga SpringsMayor Joanne Yepsen saluted Durkin, who was in theannouncer=s booth, and read proclamations honoring hiswork. PLESA PLEASED WITH >LUCKY= Itsmyluckyday (Lawyer Ron), winner of Saturday=s GI Woodward S., came out of the race well, accordingto trainer Eddie Plesa, Jr. "He came out of the race110%," Plesa said. "A little tired but, as far as wearand tear, 110%." Plesa is still undecided whetherItsmyluckyday will make another start before a possiblerun in the GI Breeders= Cup Classic. "My thinking is Idon't want to run four races in a row that are going tobe that tough; that would include if we're going to runin the Breeders' Cup," Plesa explained. Itsmyluckyday isnot nominated to the Breeders= Cup and would hav tobe supplemented for $200,000. "I like to give myhorses a little bit of a break,@ Plesa continued. AIf theultimate goal is the Breeders' Cup, I have to be surewe're going into the race 110%. I don't want to thinkwe've maybe run him one too many. Wise Dan Exits Return in Fine Form Two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan (Wiseman=sFerry) returned from a four-month hiatus following colicsurgery to win the GII Bernard Baruch H. Saturday.ACan you believe it? It's incredible," trainer CharlieLoPresti said. AHe's an amazing creature. He seemsfine. He ate everything up. We got him out and walkedhim and his legs looked great. I mean, he's a little tiredbut that's to be expected. He had to really show hisheart and class, and that's what makes him the horsethat he is. When [retiring track announcer] Tom Durkinsaid, 'Here comes the future Hall of Famer,' it wasgreat. I'm glad we ran him here. I love coming here. Ilike Saratoga. This is probably the best racing there is,the Saratoga meet. It's so tough to win a race here. This makes the fifth year we've come here and won agraded stake.@ LoPresti said that Wise Dan will leaveSaratoga Tuesday for Keeneland where he=ll aimtowards a start in the GI Shadwell Turf Mile Oct. 4before heading on to defend his crown in the GI Breeders= Cup Mile.

We’ve given Brian DiDonato and Steve Sherack mythical $2,000bankrolls and told them they must bet at least 1% and no more than 10%of their stake in each flat Grade I run at Saratoga. The player with thehighest bankroll at the end of the meet wins.

Yesterday’s Results: (-$116 on Spinaway 4th Darling Sky)

GI Hopeful S. - #3 Requite (4-1) It’s probably a lost cause trying to beat Competitive Edge and I SpentIt here, but why start making smart decisions now? The former ran sucha gigantic race first out that there’s some chance of him bouncing. Plushe was so quick in that effort that I can’t really see him rating, so there’sa chance of him getting cooked on the lead. I Spent It was veryprofessional coming through on the inside in the GII Saratoga Special, but to me that means that maybe he doesn’t have as much upside goingforward since he’s clearly already pretty mature. He’s imposing, but thechatter about him on twitter after the race was a bit out of hand. Requitedoesn’t look quite as flashy on paper as the big two, but there wasnothing wrong with his 3 1/2-length debut score. Bet like he couldn’t losedespite the presence of a pricey Pletcher firster (who came back to winSaturday), the George Weaver representative controlled things from theoutset and galloped out like a champ. I think he’s got more talent than isreadily apparent on paper, and wouldn’t be surprised if he proves closerin ability to the top two than most expect. Wager: $104 Win on #3Requite.

Yesterday’s Results: (-$122 on Spinaway 2nd By the Moon)

GI Hopeful S. - #4 Signature Cat (8-1) Well, at least they’re running the Hopeful early in the card to get thisthing over with... If the track is still favoring speed, Signature Catcertainly merits a long look after a game second going five furlongs inhis unveiling Aug. 14. The Southern Equine homebred was well clearthrough live fractions of :22 and :45 2/5 that day, and was run down lateby a well-meant and heavily favored firster from the Pletcher barn.Signature Cat stayed on nicely for second (came home in :12.56), 2 1/2lengths ahead of the ultra-impressive next-out maiden winner El Kabeir(Scat Daddy). The Cal-bred returned to the worktab with a solid five-furlong move in 1:00 4/5 (2/6) Aug. 27 and is certainly far fromimpossible in a race that clearly lacks options beyond the top two.Wager: $109 Win on #4 Signature Cat.

Shows some quick work here at Saratoga. His last two breezesfrom gate are strong, he, actually acts like a Giant's Causeway that is awin early type. 'Causeway has been a stallion that time really helps inthe development, but this one has always shown to have someprecociousness to him. Nice colt and looks to be one of highlights towatch on closing day.

Old Mexico (Kodiak Kowboy) was bought for a modest $82K fromthe very sharp and capable Clovis Crane consignment at Fasig TiptonMaryland Timonium sale. Old Mexico has trained professionally andhasn't wowed because he hasn't had to. This guy is like a veteran andthat's to Clovis schooling; throw in the horsemanship of SteveAsmussen and you’ve got a horse that will get past a lot of clockers andonlookers because this guy doesn't act like a young unseasoned horse. He worked a very fast :10 flat, we actually had a shade under :10 andout in 21.3 in May at Timonium Fair Grounds bullring makes this onevery live without any really big works for Clark Brewster. Ready for Rye (City Zip) was bought for $70K as a yearling lastSeptember at Keeneland. By one of my favorite stallions and with one ofmy favorite horses, More Than Ready, on the broodmare side. This CityZip colt is a nicely bred, speedy colt, that has all the tools to run a bigrace first or second time out. River of Dreams (Pioneerof the Nile) exits the Fasig-TiptonTimonium Maryland sale, one of my favorite sales, as we noted above.Bought for $50K from the Crupi consignment. Having been close to the Goffs Orby record whenselling to M V Magnier for i2.85 million in October, Ol=Man River had a significant weight of expectation onhis shoulders coming here after being scratched fromhis intended debut at Leopardstown earlier this month.

Unhurried early from his widedraw, the 11-10 favorite, whosedam is the brilliant 2007 G11000 Guineas and G1 Irish 1000Guineas heroine Finsceal Beo(Ire) (Mr. Greeley), cruised alongon the outer without cover andgradually crept forward from hisinitial mid-division pitch at hisown leisure. Shaken up with aquarter mile to race, thehandsome bay was in front justbefore the furlong pole and onlyneeded to be shown the whip onone occasion thereafter tocomfortably best Aared (Ire)(Shamardal) by three-quarters of
