Earth Day! Plant a Tree!

Service Above Self Club Project

RI President, Ian Riseley challenged every Rotary Club to make a difference by planting a tree for each of its members between the start of the Rotary year on 1 July, 2018 and Earth Day on 22 April 2018. That’s 1.2 million trees world-wide and over 3,500 NW Ohio! Our Club’s tree planting service project will do double-duty by contributing to clean water through restoring wetlands and involve Rotarians, students, friends and family for a fun day and an opportunity for ‘service above self’!

You are invited to join in this water conservation effort tree planting at the Forrest Woods Nature Preserve near Cecil, Ohio, just west of Defiance. This site is regarded as one of the finest remnants of the Great Black Swamp and is truly a treasure. Its position along the Maumee River means that work preserving and restoring it will contribute to making the Maumee healthy again!

Date: Saturday, April 21st at 10 a.m.

Contact: Melanie Satterfield @ 440-420-6867

Meet at the Preserve at 10 a.m.—Dress for the weather and working conditions—please bring your own shovel (they have extras too)

Don’t forget a water bottle

Parking is limited so please carpool—parking is also available at Bethel United Methodist Church-8019 Road 192, Cecil, OH 45821

Families welcome!

Our goal is to plant 1,000 trees, all planted by Rotarians from throughout the district, our St. Francis Interact stu-dents, friends and family—this will greatly expand the buffer along the Maumee.

The St. Francis Interact Club will join our Club members in this tree planting service project that will surely be a day of fun fellowship, with an impactful effort that ensures the continued health of our waterways and clean water for fu-ture generations!

Located just west of Defiance, an easy drive on US 24 or you can hop on the Ohio Turnpike for a highway drive.

If you plan to go, please call Melanie Satterfield with Black Swamp at 440-420-6867.

APRIL MEETING SPONSOR

Monday, April 23: Toledo School for the Arts

These one-hour interviews achieve several things:

A. It offers high school students the chance to meet busi-ness leaders in their community in a professional envi-ronment.

B. They have an opportunity to gain tremendous insight into their own journey ahead while seeing the possibili-ties in their own community.

C. Rotarians have the chance to serve our young adults, offer insight from our own experiences and, above all, encourage the principles of our four-way test.

If you have any questions, please contact Rachel Hobson at [email protected].

Curt is a graduate of the University of Toledo and holds a BA in Mar-keting. He started his career in the Cleaning Chemicals and Janitorial Supplies Industry and has grown his industry knowledge through various national sales and marketing posi-tions with local companies including Tolco and Betco. Curt spent several years traveling and working with national accounts before finally reconnecting with his business partner Dan Carr, and joining Silverback Supply, a locally owned and operated jani-torial supply company, four years ago. Tired of traveling and working for others, Curt decided to apply his 25 years of in-dustry experience to the role of General Manager and Part-ner of Silverback. The company is off and running, thanks also to some of our customers present here today! Curt and Rita have recently moved back to Toledo after eight years as Michigan residents, and are enjoying having more time to reconnect with friends and associates in the area. They have two outstanding children who are busy managing successful careers in Atlanta and Toledo. Curt’s free time is mainly spent finding home improvement projects to work on, but he also enjoys golfing, fishing, and hiking. Rooting for OSU in the fall also consumes a considerable amount of time as well… GO BUCKS! His pet peeve: Standing in lines… any line.

WELCOME NEW MEMBER:

Curt Hitchner!

Max presently works as an agent

for Danberry Realtors, out of the

Briarfield office in Maumee. In a

past life he owned Reddish

Printing, a small screen printing

company that operated for nine

years before he decided to get

married and start a family, the cat-

alyst for a career change. Max has

been married since July of 2016

and is the proud father of an eight

month old girl. In his spare time he enjoys getting out of

the city to do some hiking/backpacking, or finding a table

to play cards. His biggest pet peeve is either not using a

turn signal or sneezing into your hands.

WELCOME NEW MEMBER:

Max Reddish!

The March 26th meeting can be viewed here: Matt Bell

Past Program: March 26, 2018

Matt Bell Team Recovery

Matt Bell is a St. Frances graduate who went on to play college baseball. It was then that he tore his rotator cuff and quickly became addicted to Percocet, which then turned in to a heroin addiction. In Toledo, we have 16 federally funded detox beds for an estimat-ed 10,000 opiate addicts. Matt was lucky and was able to get into one of those detox beds through the DART program, which was a program developed by Sheriff Tharp and Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine. In detox, Matt, along with 3 other friends who are also still sober today, started Team Recovery, an advocacy group for addicts trying to do things differently and make some changes; specifically, to make recovery attractive and fun. They try to change the stigma attached to addiction and make people realize that addicts are not all bad. Their aim is to support the family members who also need healing and support. Matt says there needs to be more funding for detox beds. Federally funded detox beds should not be limited to 16 per facility. Facilities that have more than 16 detox beds should be able to take Medicaid. Prevention, education, and awareness are the key, he said. He also said there needs to be more monitoring of prescribing and over-prescribing medication to pa-tients. Suboxone and Methadone prescriptions to treat opioid dependence are not the solution to the epidemic. Vivitrol is a key resource than can and should be utilized more to combat this epidemic. We need detox and treatment, Matt said, not jail and more opioid replacement programs. This epidemic is killing at least 6 people every day.
