SaverDec 12, 2014 Vol. 6 No.19A SPECIAL INVITATION TO THOSE WHO USE TO ADVERTISEIN THE TRI-STATE PENNYSAVER

Many of us were saddened to learn that the Tri-state Pennysaver willno longer be serving the Southern Vermont, Eastern New York, andNorthern Massachusetts areas. It has been confirmed that The Tri-state Pennysaver will no longer be publishing as of Dec 23, 2014. As many of you know, our papers have been serving the Eastern NewYork, and Southern Vermont areas for over 62 years. Only recently,we moved into Northern Massachusetts. Our readership is extremely

high, with many loyal customers. Therefore, we extend this invitationto all businesses who have been doing business with The Tri-satePennysaver to join our team in our efforts to impart information onyour behalf to our 60,000 readers. In addition, we will do our best topublish the many community events and fund drives sponsored by lo-cal businesses and not-for-profit organizations. As many of you know,we offer reduced rates to not-for-profit organizations for guaranteedpublication of events. Otherwise, those events are published free on a"first come, first serve, space available (we cannot guarantee publish-ing)" basis. We will need your help. Please share our message with the folkswho hold or host events in the greater SW Vermont, Eastern NY &NW Mass area. Please send your event information to:[email protected] no later than the Friday before theweek of any event. We suggest sending that information two Fridaysbefore the event to maximize the probability of publishing.

Those of you who wish to advertise may send your information tothat same email address or call Brian at 802-549-4637 or 518-747-9535. If you haven't tried us before, now is the time to see what wecan do for you, even in this dismal economy. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year, from allof us at The Vermont Moneysaver Group.

Reflections: Of MisjudgmentWritten by Rachel Essaff Maher

Last weekend, we drove home from Long Island after celebratingThanksgiving with my husbands family. We decided to drive homelate in the evening so that we could skip the heavy holiday traffic. Itwas around 9:30 at night when we pulled into a chain grocery store soour youngest son could use the potty.

As I walked with him, hand in hand, to the back of the store, he chattered on and onabout every display we passed by. He was in the midst of describing a Spongebob dogsqueak toy when I noticed an older woman staring at us. At age three, Isaac is smallerthan most kids. He is a pint-sized peanut with chubby cheeks and a sunny disposition, and he looked absolutely adorable bundled in his Toy Story coat and striped knit hat

pulled low on his forehead. He was pointing to the toy with his mitten outstretched, histeeny voice calling out like one of the Chipmunks. Looking down at him and then backat the woman, I couldnt help but smile. She shook her head. I remember that stage, she said fondly as she gazed at him. Andthen she transferred her eyes to my face and gave me a most withering scowl, Butshame on you! Its awfully late be out shopping with such a young child. My mouth dropped open in surprise as she walked away, tsk-tsking me with that frownhanging about her jowls.Shame on me? For taking my son to use the bathroom in a grocery store at 9:30 pm?I could not believe it. Instantly, I felt both guilty and angry. Was I really a horriblemother for being out and about with a toddler that late at night? I began to question mydecision. But, just as quickly, I also began to feel enraged. How dare she, a completestranger with no knowledge of my situation, pass judgment on me! She did not knowme. She knew nothing about me. If anyone deserved to be frowned upon, it was her, forbeing so rude and obnoxious. As we drove home, I began to wonder why it is that people feel the need to express theirdispleasure at having children out past eight oclock. Children have no concept oftime, after all; it makes no difference to them what time they go to bed, just as long as

they get a decent amount of sleep. And any time we keep the kids up late, we always letthem sleep late the next morning. It does them no harm at all. And, clearly, my son washappy and alert on our trek to the restroom. He was certainly not in any danger ofpassing out from exhaustion! Therefore, I would issue this plea to shoppers everywhere: be kind to the parents whohave their kids out shopping after their typical bedtimes. You may not understand thereasons why that exhausted woman is leading her small child through the grocery store, but she could be someone like me; she could be on the second hour of a six-hour drivehome, just stopping to take her kid to the potty. Or maybe that man with the infant inthe stroller at Wal-Mart at ten oclock at night is not a bad father at all; perhaps he isjust a single dad who ran out of diapers and had no other choice.

Judge tenderly, if you must. There is usually a side you have not heard, a story youknow nothing about, and a battle waged that you are not having to fight.

From Susans Cornerby Susan J. Coonsretiring kind of thingI wanted to to do what I wanted to do and when I wanted to do iton my own by the age of ten. I would have rather gone to workwith my dad, who managed lumber yards, or my grandpa whowas a carpenter than go to school. My imagination led me in somany other directions that were much more fun than sitting in a

classroom all day with only a little t ime outdoors in the fresh air.I remember thinking, I would rather be painting; I would rather be discoveringlittle living things encountered on a hike in the hills; I would rather be building aboat; I would rather be riding my bike all over Northridge and Chattsworth; I wouldrather be building a radio; I would ratherwell you get the idea.I also wanted to earn MONEY. My folks couldnt afford to give me an allowance soI washed or dried the dishes, gave the dogs water, helped with yard work, cleanedmy room and even did some of the ironing because I didnt know any better!Actually, I was a happy kid and didnt need anything. I was also a lousy negotiator.By the time I was 12 I imagined myself an advertising artist working at a drawingboard dressed in a suit like Rosalind Russell or Myrna Loy who was a judge inThe Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer. I wanted to be a career woman. Thatimage became real when at the age of 16 I found myself working after school andweekends for The Northridger, a weekly newspaper. I designed advertising, settype, and even operated the linotype (a dinosaur in the world of typesetting). Iwas in my glory and still managed to graduate high school with a B+ average.Loved my dollar an hour job! This early exposure to the world of publications led to a career as a graphic artist, designer, art director, production manager, and most recently, editor and columnistof two weekly papers. How lucky I am. The irony is that for the past 45 years, while I was working at jobs requiring a minimum of 55-60 hours a week, I foundmyself saying, I wish I didnt have to work so much and had more time to writeand paint.I retired with no specific plans at the age of 71. That was a mistake. After alifetime of waking up early, rushing through the motions of straightening up thehouse andweekends cleaning it with a lick and a promise, I had no direction. I was really outof my element, home day after day, week after week with nothing to do.Really? Nothing? Well, that was ridiculous. I live in a big, five-bedroom Colonialhouse (built in 1850) and believe me, theres always something to do.Ive read about this happening to folks who work all their life, look forward toretirement, and when it is finally time, they dont know what to do with themselves.Years ago I worked on a newsletter for two divisions of Litton Industries. Theyalways listed new retirees in one column and obituaries in a box next to it on theback page. Quite often those who retired were listed in the obituary box severalmonths later. At the time I wondered if it was a health issue or disappointment thatretirement wasnt all it was cracked up to be.Maybe if I stuck to a routine I would be able to snap out of my paralysis. I stoppedgoing downstairs in my pajamas; washed the supper dishes every evening anddisciplined myself to tackling at least one unpleasant chore every now and then. That wasnt enough. Soon I was sucked into spending hours with Facebook pullingme down the ever-widening rabbit hole adding to my malaise. With no direction,no productive work to prove my worth, I sank deeper and deeper into despair. Why wasnt I able to get anything done during the day? Then I thought perhaps itwas because I was overwhelmed by the fact that after 30 years in this housethere was too much to get caught up. I didnt allow myself to do anything I enjoyedbecause I felt guilty about the things I thought I should do. This conflict lasted forover a year and a half. That is until this week! An Epiphany! Now I get it! I am where I have alwayswanted to be! I dont have to do a damn thing if I dont want to! If I feel like paintingtoday, I can paint! If I want to go for a hike with the dog and look for little livingthings in the woods, I can do it! To whom do I think I have to prove myself? Thatsit! I answer to me! Thats the sword in the stone! Thats the fountain of youth! Ifinally, finally, stopped clinging to the guilty thinking that was limiting my mind andmy life! Now Im out on the open road with the windows rolled down and the pedalto the metal! My scarf is blowing in the wind behind me! Watch me soar!!
