    Just Thinking

By: May JonesOne fall afternoon, after completing a day of chores and tinkering, my father

ooked out at the woods across the road and declared that there were a lot of maplerees over there. He had never made maple syrup before, and now he was thinking

he might. By springtime, there were buckets hanging from those maple trees. Withdetermination and sap for ingredients, he created a makeshift evaporator from anold feed trough, poured his sap in a plastic milk jug, and punctured a hole in the jug

with a screw to act as a sap flow regulator. He managed to produce a few pints ofyrup this way. The following year, he became a card—-carrying maple syrup

producer by building a sugar shack and purchasing a (real) evaporator that produced

gallons of syrup this time. He is 83 years old. He says he has been 39 years old 44mes.Richard Cumberland once said “It is better to wear out than to rust out.” Strong on

will and hard on the body, my father has made certain that he will never rust out. There’s proof: a body of patchwork stitchery, purple bruises, broken bones, andbloody wounds of unknown origin. Because he is unable to leave motion, risk, or

adventure unattended to, he’s been found on motorcycles, boats, tractors, andeven in the drivers seat of a corvette with his sunglasses on.

His neat—-nick personality (Navy guys tend to be like that) causes him a lot of

work. Whenever I walk through his well swept garage, I see numerous projectsneatly lined up in a row: engines in need of repair, things that need a coat of paint, ools that need sharpening, and guns that need cleaning. After use, things are

always wiped down and put away in its proper place. Everything he owns is inpristine condition – a true testament of gratitude for everything he has. He sayshe can’t die anytime soon – he has too many things to do. Sometimes they are big

hings; like building sugar shacks, and sometimes they are little things; like gettinghis dog a biscuit or organizing his tools. To him, enjoyment can be found in makinga cup of coffee.

With his blood coursing through my veins, I see myself as being his kind of old:one that has the perfect combination of routine and impulse, and one where the

hrill of living is still intact. As a mature woman, I still look to him for wisdom, guidance, onsolation, advice, and hugs. His essence has seeped deep into my soul, keeping

me on course in this journey we call life. When I was a young girl, I thought that the

most wonderful thing in the world was to be around my father. I still do.Your comments are welcome at [email protected]

    MY THOUGHTS

    by John L Jefferson

In just a few short weeks, we will be in the midst of the unrivaled

beauty that is fall foliage in Vermont. It could be argued that the

state of Vermont showcases the most vibrant and impressive au-

tumn colors found in the United States. My travels have brought me all throughout this

state, and I believe that Bennington has among the greatest display of colors in all of

Vermont. With that said, it is obvious that the majority of “leaf peepers” set their destina-

tions for viewing in other towns throughout the state. Many resorts throughout Vermont

cater to tourists looking to take in the views that our fall season has to offer. Bennington

seems a likely place to grab a sizable chunk of the visitors who come to our state, and we

do see an uptick in traffic during the fall season. However, when a tourist simply drives

through town and the surrounding areas gawking at leaves on a tree, Bennington does not

benefit. If “Vermont begins here” as the Town of Bennington’s new marketing campaign

claims, we should be on the front lines and the first to see the tourists who flock to

Vermont in droves every October. The tough part is keeping the visitors here in town, but

I believe that we can do so, and attract even more by making Bennington a premier desti-

nation for experiencing fall in New England. Existing attractions like our apple orchards

and the Apple Barn (with their corn maze) are a good draw, and we can build around such

places. Events like an “Octoberfest” on Main Street in Bennington would be something

that people from many surrounding communities would be interested in coming to check

out, and it would also make those who pass through to see the beauty of our landscape

consider getting out of their cars and off their buses to see what our community has to

offer. Such an event could include farmers and flea markets, beer, music, hayrides, and

many other activities. With a little something for everyone, we could attract families,

retirees, and young people alike to spend their time and money here in Bennington. Fail-

ing to capitalize on an opportunity which nature presents to us free of charge seems sense-

less. If we expect to attract visitors to Bennington, town leadership must be willing to put

in the work to make it a reality. If they don’t, another town will be happy to do so.

Phil Prehoda (left) and Tom Collard (right), members of Vermont Slate Quarry Association, recentlyresented $200 donation check from Vermont Slate Quarry Association to Janice Edwards for Poultney

Area St. David’s Society. The donation is given for the society’s use regarding its recent project asosts of the Penrhyn Choir from Bethesda, northwest Wales to our northeast USA slate valley region.

Vermont Slate Quarry Associationhas made a $200 donation to

Poultney Area St. David’s Society forits recent two-day Penrhyn ChoirUSA tour project. The donation isgiven by the association to assist

    nearby Queensbury, Warren County,New York

Vermont Slate Quarry Association has made a $200 donation to Poultney Area St. David’sSociety for its recent two-day Penrhyn Choir USA tour project. The choir’s USA tourincluded concert performances in Queensbury, Warren County, New York, in Washington,D.C. at the National Cathedral and in Columbus, Ohio. The Penrhyn Choir is fromBethesda, northwest Wales, an historic and active slate quarry region. At each concert, the choir’s performance included a movie educating the public about the Welsh emigrantsfrom the Bethesda slate regions to the Vermont / New York slate valley region. The donation is given by Vermont Slate Quarry Association to the St. David’s Societybecause of the many historic and present day business and family connections the society, the choir, its home region and the local slate valley region enjoys. The Vermont SlateQuarry Association $200 donation is designated to assist the society with expenses thatthe society had for events held in the Vermont / New York slate valley as well as in nearbyQueensbury in Warren County, New York. In appreciation of the society’s project, thequarry association made donation to assist with the many costs in hosting this choir forits third visit since 1993 to our northeast slate valley region. The St. David’s Society, anon-profit fellowship organization, through the efforts of its volunteer officers, society

members and many other community volunteers, organized two days of public eventswhich revolved around the choir and these slate valley communities. All profits the societyearned were, and continue to be, re-invested in costs for the choir’s travel, lodging andconcert and entertainment expenses. Long-time family and business relationships, aswell as new family and business connections amongst all our slate valley’s heritages, were enjoyed by the choir and the public during the choir’s 3-night stay. The Vermont / New York slate valley has several emigrant heritages and businesses whichhave shaped the now 175-year-old history of our region’s slate quarry industry. Many of those emigrant families were from Wales. The entire slate valley community has longheld, and continues to hold, strong business relationships as well as friendships amongstall its heritages. Vermont Slate Quarry Association is pleased to support the St. David’sSociety for its special project. The association invites businesses, organizations andindividuals to match or exceed its gift.Vermont Slate Quarry Association is a domestic non-profit corporation focused oneducation. It is comprised of slate quarry businesses within the Vermont / New York slatevalley. For more information contact: Vermont Slate Quarry Association, P.O. Box 582, East
