About West Mongolia Overview Lying some 1,600 kilometres from Ulan Bator, Mongolia’s beautiful Western region is a land unto itself.

Wild, rugged, and stunningly beautiful, the West is not for the faint hearted: tourist infrastructure is minimal, conditions are harsh, and Western luxuries are a thousand miles away.

But that’s precisely what makes it so special! Having spent two and a half years traveling in the third world, I can honestly say West Mongolia is the most amazing place I’ve ever visited!

Yes, all of Mongolia is wonderful… but the West is the Best!

The Jewel Of The West The majority of West Mongolia is a dry, low-lying basin which extends from the Khangai Mountains in Central Mongolia. The region is a remote desert broken by a handful of large saltwater lakes which catch snowmelt from the surrounding mountains.

But in the far west the land rises into the Altai Mountains. And nestled between the border with Russia and China, high in the Altai mountains, is the province of Bayan Olgii.

West Mongolia. The low-lying region between the Altai Mountains to the West and Central Mongolia’s Khangai Mountains to the East is pretty much all desert -in spite of snow melt running off and evaporating in huge windswept lakes.

The southern half is part of the Gobi Desert.

The region is majority Kazakh, with nomadic herders living on the Monoglian side of the Altai range long before modern borders were defined. Kazakh culture has been uniquely preserved in Bayan Olgii, while Kazakhstan was modernised and populated by foreigners. Kazakh students now visit Mongolia to find out about their traditions!

Bayan Olgii is arguably Mongolia’s most stunning region, and it’s best parts are protected within Tavan Bogd National Park.

Tavan Bogd: What's there to see?

The Tavan Bogd area truly is one of the world's most special places -the scenery, the culture, the remoteness... wow!

Tavan Bogd, or 'Five Saints', is so named for the five large peaks which lie right on the Western Mongolian border. The tallest of these, Khuiten Uul, is the highest mountain in Mongolia, at 4,369m (about 14,300 feet).

From between these permanently snow-covered peaks tumble two spectacular glaciers. Remote river valleys stretch down from these peaks, with glacial runoff eventually landing in pristine Khoton and Khurgan Lakes lying some 50km below. The area is doted with petroglyphs and other archeological sites.

The area is perfect for hiking, horse riding, and fishing. You can find my detailed online guide to Tavan Bogd National Park here.

Is it worth it?

Yes! To get Out West it takes a bit of money (i.e. flights to Olgii town) or time (i.e. a tortuous 3-day bus ride, or private overland tour). But if you can afford either then you should really get yourself there before it all changes!

The whole place is such a world away from home that you'll feel like you're living in a National Geographic special. Having spent a few years traveling the world, I get less of those 'Wow' moments these days, but the West really blew me away!

So go see it, before everybody else does!

Don't go through a UB-based company

Over a thousand miles from UB, with a different language, the amazing West Mongolia might as well be a different country.

Most UB-based Mongolian tour guides rarely even make it out west, and don't know the region. If you take Western Mongolian tours with a UB-based guide, it will be like being lead around a country by another foreigner.

A local outfit is particularly important in Bayan Olgii aimag because 90% of the inhabitants speak Kazakh, which most Mongolians don't know.

Bottom line: If you're going to Bayan Olgii, you need a Kazakh guide.

If you insist on going with a UB-based company then make sure they have allocated you a Kazakh guide.

Of course, always go with a Mongolian company rather than a foreign-based company, who will just take a huge margin and sub-contract the

work to Mongolians.

Can you recommend an itinerary?

I got this question from a lot of people, so I decided to put together a recommended itinerary, in consultation with Bek Travel.

Bek was born and raised on Olgii, and i’ve known him for years after doing my own tour out West with him. It’s been great watching a Mongolian-owned business grow from a pretty amateurish start in c. 2006 to become a professional outfit.

(There are other West-based Tour companies and they compete ferociously and at times nefariously (!). You can check different outfits out but I would recommend Bek Travel first and Blue Wolf last.)

Tavan Bogd, Page 8Copyright mongolia-travel-advice.com

So Bek created a couple of options which covers all the best bits of Tavan Bogd and surrounds, which go with his tour company.

These itineraries will allow you to see the most scenic parts, experience Kazakh culture and stay with nomads, see ancient petroglyphs, and visit eagle hunters.

THERE ARE ALSO FIXED DATE TOURS so you can share costs with other independent-minded travelers.

These itineraries are out of Ulan Bator and include flights to Olgii.

Prices are valid for 2019 but are subject to change without notice.

FIXED DATE TOURS, 2019: Fixed Date Tours enable you to plan in advance, and the tour operator can share the cost with other like-minded travelers. Big savings can be achieved by sharing the most expensive cost items like jeep hire, driver, fuel etc. ; this is reflected in the

much lower prices compared to your own private trip. I can’t guarantee the

quality of the fellow travellers you will be with if you choose this option, only to say groups are very small, there’s plenty of space, and 95% of the people crazy enough to venture to this part of Mongolia will be quality folk like you!
