‑ABRAHAM LINCOLN ANNUAL MESSAGE

TO CONGRESSDECEMBER 1, 1862

“As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew.”

Page 3: Monmouth College Viewbook 2015-2016

Our world is changing – fast. To keep pace requires new ways

of thinking, new ways of acting.

At Monmouth College, we’re

preparing students to succeed

in this ever‑evolving future.

We’re teaching them to think

more deeply, more creatively.

We’re engaging them to be more

collaborative – in the classroom,

in research, in internships,

and in leadership. Employing

innovative instruction and the

most advanced facilities, we’re

preparing graduates who will be

able to learn, adapt, and thrive,

no matter what the future holds.

They will think anew. They will

act anew. They will lead in a new,

dynamic world.

Nothing is “extracurricular” or outside or extraneous. It is all part of a very conscious, very concrete process of learning.

111:A FAVORABLE STUDENT‑TO‑FACULTY RATIO TRANSLATES TO A VERY HIGH LEVEL OF PERSONAL ATTENTION AND MENTORING.

m y r i a d m e n t o r sEvery college student needs a mentor to help guide them. At Monmouth, you’ll have not one mentor but many, from all areas of your campus experience, helping to guide and encourage you toward the accomplishment of your many goals.

This is a whole education – all about you. More intentional, more

purposeful, our developmental

process at Monmouth starts

with a simple question: What are

you interested in? Once we help

you identify your passions and

goals, we then outline options,

and a plan, to help you achieve

them. We’ll explore the right

mix of a major, minor, research

opportunity, campus leadership

position, professional internship,

semester abroad, community

service, student ministry, part‑

time employment, and more.

Classroom knowledge is just one

part of a Monmouth education.

This is an education that goes

further. And as a result, you will,

too.

i n t e g r at e d s t u d i e s Our Integrated Studies program offers a sequence of topical, interdisciplinary courses that prepare students to be critical thinkers and strong communicators. The program includes four courses that build upon one another over four years:

1. Introduction to Liberal ArtsA course to help students become adept at reading, writing, and analyzing, as well as seeing the connection between disciplines.

2. Global PerspectivesStudents investigate other communities, political systems, and cultures.

3. ReflectionsStudents look inward at personal values, ethics, and purpose in life.

4. CitizenshipA capstone course that challenges students to move past study and take conscientious action through service projects and internships.

Today, the 12th most used function on a cell phone is talking. Technology, communications,

globalization – our world is

a very different place than it

used to be. It’s why you need

an education that will not just

fill you with facts (because

many of those facts may

not be relevant tomorrow),

but rather an education that goes deeper. At Monmouth, you’ll

be exposed to many ideas and perspectives. You’ll take classes in

several different disciplines. You’ll become adept in your major, but

you’ll also acquire a broad knowledge and practical skills that will

serve you now, and for the rest of your career – no matter what the

future brings. This is the liberal arts.

MONMOUTH OFFERS 35 MAJORS, 30 MINORS, & 16 PRE‑PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS.

35i n n o v at i v e l e a r n i n gOurs is a uniquely collaborative academic experience, distinguished by a multidisciplinary approach, experiential learning, and using the power of the liberal arts to address issues of social importance.

This is a deep,broad,innovative,integrated,adaptable,collaborative,21st‑centurypreparation.Our world is increasingly complex and interconnected. Today’s challenges, whether within

an organization or worldwide, call for ideas from various

disciplines working together. Monmouth has been a

pioneer in the development of an integrated education.

When you graduate from Monmouth, you’ll have an

awareness of many academic areas and how they connect.

You’ll have an integrated perspective. You’ll be ready

for an integrated world.

r e a d y y o u r p a s s p o r tWe’re opening the world to our students. Each new Monmouth student will receive assistance in securing a U.S. passport, and we’ll pay the application fee.

s c i e n c e + b u s i n e s sMonmouth’s new $42 million Center for Science and Business is inspiring fresh ideas for integrating the teaching of these two traditionally separate disciplines.

e x c e p t i o n a l f a c u lt yMonmouth faculty bring degrees from prestigious schools such as Brown, Cornell, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Princeton, Stanford, University of Chicago, Yale, and more.

t r i a d p r o g r a mMonmouth’s innovative Triad program brings together three faculty members representing separate disciplines to collaborate on teaching and thinking about an important interdisciplinary issue, such as world hunger.

o n f i r e f o r h i s t o r yOur innovative history curriculum is “history from the documents up.” First-year students, instead of studying a general book about “Western Civilization,” use primary sources to research a fascinating historical period or incident, such as “The Great Chicago Fire of 1871.”

u n d e r g r a d u at e r e s e a r c hMonmouth students across all majors can participate in high-level research. In fact, our students can begin research in the summer before their freshmen year, as part of our innovative Summer Opportunities for Intellectual Activity (SOf IA) program.

Sure, you can read about things. But wouldn’t you rather do them? Hands‑on learning brings true

understanding. It’s why more than

three‑quarters of our most recent

graduating class participated

in internships. It’s why our

undergraduates conduct high‑

level research, an opportunity

usually reserved for graduate

students at other institutions.

It’s why you’ll find our students

studying, researching, and serving

in every corner of the world.

There’s just something about

being in an NBC newsroom, or on

an expedition to the Galapagos

Islands, or standing atop Machu

Picchu in Peru. Monmouth

students learn by doing.

s t u d y a b r o a dMonmouth graduates bring a larger perspective, because they have experienced a larger world. Monmouth offers semester-long programs around the world.

t h e w o r l d a wa i t sMonmouth professors are often leading students on study and research expeditions – whether to a Chicago museum, a national professional conference, or far-away locales such as Borneo, China, Cuba, Malaysia, or Singapore.

You no doubt have many interests. Choose a college

where you can get involved and

pursue them all. Monmouth is

a smaller college, but we offer

opportunities that are more

typical of a large university –

with one big difference. Here,

you’re not competing with tens

of thousands of other students

to participate. At Monmouth, you

can join not just one student club,

but many. You can compete on

multiple intramural teams. You

can join a fraternity or sorority.

You can be a Resident Assistant.

You can have a part in a play. You

can be a student government

leader. You can play oboe in the

marching band. You can do any

of these things – or, you can do

them all!

120WE’RE A SMALL COLLEGE, BUT WE OFFER MORE THAN 120 STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS, PLUS AN ACTIVE GREEK LIFE WITH EIGHT NATIONAL FRATERNITIES & SORORITIES.

a p l a c e t o b e l o n g , a p l a c e t o l e a dWith so many opportunities, you’ll get involved at Monmouth – everyone does. As a result, you’ll easily meet other students, make close friends, and feel part of a genuine, close community. And Monmouth is the perfect place to explore and enhance your leadership abilities.

Come tackle,swing,dribble,pass,serve,attack,shoot,spike – –become a Fighting Scot!

Ours is a proud athletic tradition. Competing at the

NCAA Division III level as

a member of the Midwest

Conference, Monmouth offers

24 varsity sports, more than

most NCAA institutions. We

are one of only a handful of

small colleges to offer varsity

water polo to men and women.

Our track and field program

is perennially one of the top

Division III programs in the

country. With approximately

30 percent of the student body

participating in at least one

varsity sport, athletics are an

important part of Monmouth

life. Go Fighting Scots!

c h a m p i o n s h i p f a c i l i t i e sMonmouth offers outstanding athletic facilities, far surpassing most athletic facilities in the Midwest. Since 2000, seven venues have been newly constructed or renovated – including our $22 million Huff Athletic Center, known as “The Huff,” a sensational sports, recreation, and fitness center.

consecutive year, 99 percent

of Monmouth graduates were

either employed or in graduate

school within six months.

Monmouth graduates are in

demand because of their ability

to think, communicate, and lead.

Knowledgeable and experienced,
