Message From the PublisherDear Readers and Friends,

Have you shown praise to your kids lately? Did you know that showing praise increases the bond of affection between a parent and child? Praise also builds self-esteem and self worth for children. Try to make this March the month to start praising your children and family more regularly. We all tend to take for granted and loose gratitude for those closest to us. Whether it is a friendship or a mem-ber of your family, praise is always nice to hear and it is a great way to reinforce the relationship. Remember effective praise must be given with sincerity and enthusiasm. Talk to your children about who they feel in their life that deserves some praise more often and how they can learn to make gratitude and praise a part of their daily lives. I am certain your child’s world will be a happier place.

Have a joyous spring!Regards, Cami

Definition of Tooth Fairy

1. Noun. A fairy that is said to leave money at night under a child’s pillow to compensate for a baby tooth falling out. When a child loses a tooth, children get excited and then will place their tooth under their pillow before going to sleep that night. Their hopes are that the Tooth Fairy will come during the night and replace the tooth with money and a note. The most useful purpose of the Tooth Fairy myth in this day and age is to give children something to look for-ward to when they lose a tooth, especial-ly as some children become quite con-cerned about the loss of their first teeth.

But where did it all start? There are many myths and legends.

Legend 1: In European folklore there exist many

myths, superstitions and legends. The tooth fairy, although widespread appears to have many different variations, but most of them deal with teeth having an element of power, even able to ward off evil.

Legend 2: The Vikings used to pay their children a tooth fee, simply as it sounds, a fee for the use of the children’s teeth which were then strung onto necklaces and other jewelry. The Vikings believed that the power of the children’s teeth would aid them in battle.

Legend 3: One of the more common stories is that the teeth were buried so as to hide them from witches and evil spirits who would be able to use the power of the lost tooth and place a curse of the child much in the way that voodoo works with hair.

Myth 1: By planting the tooth in the garden near their house they were also trying to assist the growth of the new adult tooth in its place. As some towns became more crowded with buildings and less land, the teeth were then bur-

ied in flowerpots and eventually moved indoors to be ‘buried’ under a pillow.

Myth 2: Some cultures then introduced the myth of the Tooth Mouse, obviously a little mouse who would scamper around town and take the children’s teeth.

Mouse to Fairy: The transformation from mouse to fairy for some cultures (some still use the mouse who takes the teeth and also leaves trea-sures under the pillow) came after the publica-tion of “La Bonne Petite Souris,” in the 18th Cen-tury in which the mouse in the story hides under the pillow of an evil King, changes into a fairy and knocks out all his teeth. So eventually the story changed again into a fairy who would take the teeth, leaving a small reward in its place.

ART FOR YOUR FAMILY

Too Fast... or Too Slow?Kids are all individuals, special and unique little persons that we love and care for. After all, adults are all different in so many ways: ‘morning/night people’, ‘under/overachievers’, ʻmellow/intense personalitiesʻ, the list goes on and on. Par-ents may also label their kids to describe the way they do homework, household chores, or interacting with peers and siblings. Some parents may find that there are some behaviors they might like to change to help the child work more effi-ciently and happily.

Some may be looking to de-stress their child, give them a better sense of self, more con-fidence, helping them interact with other children in a more positive manner. Look to see where your child’s interests are; encourage activities that relate to it. It might be a physical

activity such as sports, dance, martial arts, or anything else that involves movement and co-ordination. The discipline in that activity may be able to transfer into other areas of your child’s home or social life.

Think creatively and see what parallels you can apply in those areas and there may be positive results. In art, we offer many areas in which your child may engage her imagination, motor skills, awareness and personal-ity. She may have a flair for de-sign and pattern, yet not much patience for the workmanship involved for completion. Your son may love drawing animals or cartoons, but rushes through the artwork in a haphazard manner, although he is capable of much more. You notice the similarity in their efforts to do homework, home chores or other activities. The good news is that the same skills we use to improve their artworks do transfer elsewhere! At Artisan Studio, we often get kudos from parents who are see-

ing the improvement in their child’s school work, from im-proved handwriting, neatness, organization, and on to work-ing faster or slower and more efficiently.

How does art affect your child? When drawing is taught, there are step by step methods used to teach drawing by observation which enhances awareness and spatial relationships. Using a method can jump start a proj-ect and have it move along more quickly and effectively, minimiz-ing wasted time. These step by step methods can be applied to learning in other areas that involve systems such as spelling and math. When children are working with paint or pastel, they see they cannot rush or colors will muddy up or runinto each other, creating un-wanted results. Creating their own cartoon characters devel-ops freedom of choice; to draw a well known character devel-ops restraint. They learn that control and patience can be achieved and give them the

results they want. This can be applied when they check their letters in spelling or keep their columns in line in math.

Three dimensional art literally encourages thinking ‘outside the box’ using diverse materials and learning how to construct anddesign both aesthetic and structural balance. Increase in patience and hand-eye coordina-tion are applied here. Clearly, building and fitting pieces together cannot be rushed in an effective assembly, so the child must develop a sense of patience and system, as there is an order to the process. Acceptance of mistakes and encouragement to retry are also extremely important for a child to understand in developing self confidence. This can relate to mistakes in judgement in many areas both inside and outside of school, and used as a great learning tool in diverse areas. Let them create and reap the benefits that result from it!

GRASS FOR YOUR FAMILY

Make Your Own Grass Head Discuss With Your Child: Discuss what grass seed needs to start to grow (germinate): water, light, soil. Teach your child that the more they give their heads a “haircut” the better the grass will grow. Discuss the life cycle of the grass, which is about 6 weeks. This fact can be related to the cycles of other plants, animals, and even people.

What Your Child Will Gain And Learn: This is a great chance to give your child a hands on life-cycle lesson, which they can do at home and as a family. It also

provides a chance to learn about how plants germinate. This activity is also great to be used to prac-tice fine motor skills, increase so-cial skills, promote creativity and self expression and improve self esteem. This is a great activity that will definitely encourage laughter and fun too with your child.

Materials: Old pair of nylon stock-ings, grass seed, soil, small plastic containers, elastic bands, googlie eyes (the ones you sew on), pipe cleaners and a spray bottle.

Description: 1. Cut nylon at the knee 2. Scoop in 1 tbsp. grass seed 3. Scoop in preferred amount of soil compacted (size of a softball).

Work the soil down to foot of nylon into shape of a head. 4. Tie the open end of the nylon tight (snip excess nylon and leave about 3 inches dangling). 5. Have the children pinch the soil through the nylon to make it easy to tie an elastic around for ears and nose. 6. Sew on googlie eyes. 7. Make glasses out of pipe cleaners 8. Place grass head on top of small container and leave excess 3 inch nylon dangling into the container 9. Pour in 1/2 inch of water in bot-tom of the container every couple of days. 10. Spray water gently over grass seeds on top 2 times each day.

WATCH THE GRASS GROW and watch your child or children enjoy

creating their own hairdo’s.

FOOD FOR YOUR FAMILY

Make a wrap for your child to take to school They are so much easier to prepare than a sandwich is. Use small whole wheat wraps. Spread a thin layer of mayo, or butter, lay your child’s favorite meat on top, spread whatever condiments they like on top and roll into a tight log. Cut width-wise on angles. Your children will think it’s so neat eat their sandwich in a cool new way. If your child likes cheese, you can even do a cheese log for a surprise one day. Shred marble cheese into the wrap and follow the wrapping and cutting directions above. To keep children full throughout the day, pack their lunches with hearty, stick to their ribs, snack ideas. Example: Buy oatmeal based cookies, buy granola and oatmeal based bars.

Pack a yummy soup in a thermos and add cheese and crackers as a side.

Instead of a sandwich everyday, change it up by sending some of their favorite meat rolled up in a baggie with a side of some yummy seasoned bread sticks and some cheese.

Super fast cheesecake the kids will enjoy. Spread one graham cracker with cream cheese, spread some strawberry jam on the cream cheese and top with another graham cracker. There you are - cheesecake to go!

Change up your child’s lunch easily by mixing up dif-ferent food on different days: One day pudding, one day have yogurt, one day have fruit bars. Your child won’t be bored with their lunch and they will look forward to checking what they will get each day. Veggies- Sending veggies and dip doesn’t have to be an all-night chopping job. Choose one veggie per day. Slice up some cucumber one day and send with a small container of dip or salad dressing. The next day send carrots. The next day send broccoli. Then the next week try a fruit and dip one day, and another kind the next day.

Never forget to send along something extra “sweet” in the snack bag. A small note or a simple smiley

face on a piece of paper will surely put a smile on your child’s face.

Great Snack Ideas For Kids To Take To School Here are some tips that are healthy and quick to make and will also fill those hungry little tummies.

There was a time, not too long ago, when food was not only simple and tasty, but also about getting the family to-gether. The dining room at STAGECOACH RESTAURANT is “designed to take you back to a simpler time where family gatherings were a common place and everyone looked forward to them because of the food and fellowship.” Stagecoach Restaurant has managed to create this experi-ence with an Italian menu of items that they are really good at preparing. The feeling is that they are trying to have you

recede back to the comfort-ing aromas of your mother’s or grandmother’s Italian home. The waitress is always there to seat you quickly into the re-finished building of the Stage-coach restaurant. The first sur-prise is that the decor is warm and friendly just like a home. The atmosphere is fashionable and clean. In the dining room you will see families, friends and “dates”. The menu contains both classic Italian fare, such as pasta’s and homemade dishes such as scampi, parmagiano’s and prime rib. Stagecoach also offers several sandwiches,

soups, wraps, salads, desserts and a kids menu. The plate portions are over-loaded and large. The nightly dinner specials offer a lot to choose from and are very rea-sonably priced for the qual-ity and quantity. Many dinner patrons have “goodie bags” and left-overs to take home. Stagecoach restaurant in Millstone New Jersey serves a great purpose in the collec-tive restaurant scene of both Ocean and Monmouth counties. Stagecoach is already looking to be a favorite among the lo-cal families as well for families

outside of Millstone looking to find a new alternative to din-ing out and dining well. It is not often that a family can dine out together at a local restaurant with having a full course family meal including, appetizers, main course meals, side dishes, salad and dessert for a great price. Stagecoach offers a great value and laid back cozy atmosphere that anyone would surely enjoy.Stagecoach Pizzeria and Res-taurant is located where the old Primavera Pizzeria was. The owners are now Bob and Leann Nicholas and they welcome you to stop in anytime.
