    When using your device the rst time,you should complete these tasks to setup the device and get to know the basicfeatures.

    1. Install the batteries (page 2).2. Turn on the device (page 4).

    Battery Information

    WARNINGThis product contains a lithium-ionbattery. To prevent the possibility ofpersonal injury or product damagecaused by battery exposure to extreme

    heat, store the device out of directsunlight.

    The temperature rating for the device(page 45) may exceed the usable rangeof some batteries. Alkaline batteries

    can rupture at high temperatures.

    Alkaline batteries lose a signicantamount of their capacity as temperaturedecreases. Therefore, use lithium

    batteries when operating the device inbelow-freezing conditions.

    The device operates on the includedlithium-ion battery pack or three AA

    batteries. For tips on maximizingbattery life and other batteryinformation, seepage 46.

    Installing the Lithium-ionBattery Pack1. Turn the D-ring counter-clockwise,

    and pull up to remove the cover.

    2. Locate the battery that came inthe product box.

    3. Align the metal contacts on thebattery with the metal contacts inthe battery compartment.

    4. Insert the battery into thecompartment, contacts rst.

    5. Gently press the battery into place.

    6. Replace the battery cover, and turnthe D-ring clockwise.

    Charging the Lithium-ion BatteryPack

    notice

    To prevent corrosion, thoroughlydry the mini-USB port, the weathercap, and the surrounding area before

    charging or connecting to a computer.Before you use the device the rsttime, fully charge the battery. Charginga depleted battery takes 4 hours. Thedevice will not charge when outside

    the temperature range of 32F to 113F(0C to 45C).

    1. Plug the AC charger into a standardwall outlet.

    2. Pull up the weather capfrom themini-USB port.

    3. Plug the small end of the ACcharger into the mini-USB port.

    4. Charge the device completely.

    The device may feel warm whencharging.

    Removing the Lithium-ion BatteryPack

    WARNINGDo not use a sharp object to removebatteries.

    1. Remove the battery cover.

    2. Pull up on the side of the batterythat is closer to the key.

    Installing AA BatteriesInstead of the lithium-ion battery pack,

    you can use alkaline, NiMH, or lithiumbatteries. This is especially usefulwhen you are on the trail and cannotcharge the lithium-ion battery pack.Use NiMH or lithium batteries for best

    results.1. Turn the D-ring counter-clockwise,

    and pull up to remove the cover.

    2. Insert three AA batteries, observingpolarity.

    3. Replace the battery cover, and turnthe D-ring clockwise.

    4. Hold (page 1).

    5. Select > Stup> Systm> AABattryTyp.

    6. Select Alkalin, Lithium, orRchargabl NiMH.

    Turning the Device On orOff

    Hold (page 1).

    Satellite SignalsAfter the device is turned on, it beginsacquiring satellite signals. The devicemay need a clear view of the sky toacquire satellite signals. When the

    bars turn green, your device hasacquired satellite signals. The time anddate are set automatically based onthe GPS position. To adjust the timesettings, seepage 39.

    Adjusting the BacklightBrightnessNoTe: The backlight brightness maybe limited when the remaining capacity

    in the batteries is low.

    Extensive use of screen backlightingcan signicantly reduce battery life.You can adjust the backlight brightnessto maximize battery power.

    ProlesProles are a collection of settings thatoptimize your device based on howyou are using it. For example, yoursettings and views can be differentwhen you are using the device forgeocaching and for navigating on

    water.

    When you are using a prole and youchange settings such as data elds orunits of measurement, the changesare saved automatically as part of the

    prole.

    and TracksWaypointsWaypoints are locations you record andstore in the device.

    Creating a WaypointYou can save your current location asa waypoint.

    1. Select Mark Waypint.

    2. Select an option: To save the waypoint without

    changes, select Sav.

    To make changes to thewaypoint, select edit, make

    changes to the waypoint, andselect Sav.

    Finding a Waypoint1. Select Whr T?> Waypints.

    2. Select a waypoint.

    Editing a WaypointBefore you can edit a waypoint, youmust create a waypoint.

    Increasing the Accuracy of aWaypoint Location

    Waypoint Averaging allows you toincrease the accuracy of a waypointlocation by collecting multiple samplesof the waypoint location.

    1. Select > Waypint Avraging.

    2. Select a waypoint.

    3. Move to the location.

    4. Select Start.

    5. When the Sample Condence status

    bar reaches 100%, select Sav.For best results, collect four toeight samples for the waypoint,waiting at least 90 minutes betweensamples.

    Projecting a Waypoint1. Select > Sight N G.

    2. Point the device at an object or inthe direction of a location.

    3. Select Lck Dirctin> PrjctWaypint.

    4. Select a unit of measure.

    5. Enter the distance to the object, andselect .

    6. Select Sav.

    Using Sight N GoYou can point the device at an object inthe distance, lock in the direction, andthen navigate to the object.

    You can use additional maps in thedevice, such as BirdsEyesatelliteimagery, BlueChartg2, and CityNavigatordetailed maps. Detailedmaps may contain additional points ofinterest, such as restaurants or marine

    services. For more information, go tohttp://buy.garmin.comor contact yourGarmin dealer.

    Finding a Location by NameDepending on the maps loaded on

    your device, you can search for cities,geographic points, and various pointsof interest (POIs), such as restaurants,hotels, and auto services.

    Finding an AddressYou can use optional City Navigator

    maps to search for addresses.

    1. Select Whr T?> Addrsss.

    2. Enter the country or state, ifnecessary.

    3. Enter the city or postal code.NoTe: Not all map data providespostal code searching.

    4. Select the city.

    5. Enter the house number.

    6. Enter the street.

    RoutesA route is a sequence of waypoints thatleads you to your nal destination.

    Creating a Route1. Select > RutPlannr>

    Crat Rut> Slct First Pint.2. Select a category.

    3. Select the rst point in the route.

    4. Select Us> Slct Nxt Pint.

    5. Repeat steps 24 until the route iscomplete.

    6. Select to save the route.

    Editing the Name of a Route1. Select > RutPlannr.

    To add an additional point onthe route, select Insrt.

    The additional point is insertedbefore the point you are editing.

    TracksA track is a recording of your path.

    The track log contains informationabout points along the recorded path,including time, location, and elevationfor each point.

    Recording Track Logs1. Select > Stup> Tracks>Track Lg.

    2. Select Rcrd, D Nt ShworRcrd, Shw on Map.

    If you select Rcrd, Shw onMap, a line on the map indicatesyour track.

    3. Select Rcrd Mthd.

    4. Select an option:

    To record tracks at a variablerate that creates an optimumrepresentation of your tracks,select Aut.

    To record tracks at a specieddistance, select Distanc.

    To record tracks at a speciedtime, select Tim.

    5. Select Intrval.

    6. Complete an action:

    Select an option to record tracksmore or less often.

    NoTe: Using the Mst oftninterval provides the most trackdetail, but lls up the devicememory quicker.

    Enter a time or distance, andselect .

    As you move with the device turnedon, a track log is created.

    Saving the Current TrackThe track being recorded is called the

    current track.

    1. Select > TrackManagr>Currnt Track.

    2. Select what you want to save:

    Select Sav Track. Select Sav Prtin, and select

    a portion.

    Viewing Track Information1. Select > TrackManagr.

    2. Select a track.

    3. Select Viw Map.

    The beginning and the end of thetrack are marked by ags.

    4. Select the information bar on thetop of the screen.

    Deleting a Track1. Select > Track Managr.

    2. Select a track.

    AdventuresGroup related items together as an

    adventure. For example, you can createan adventure for your latest hiking trip.The adventure could contain the tracklog of the trip, photos of the trip, andgeocaches you hunted. You can use

    BaseCamp to create and manage youradventures.

    You can navigate a route, a track, to awaypoint, to a geocache, to a photo,or to any saved location in the device.You can use the map or the compass tonavigate to your destination.

    Navigating to aDestinationYou can navigate to a destination usingthe map or compass.

    1. Select Whr T?.2. Select a category.

    3. Select a destination.

    4. Select G.

    The map page opens with yourroute marked with a magenta line.

    5. Navigate using the map (page 17)or compass (page 19).

    Starting a TracBack

    You can navigate back to the beginning

    of a track. This can be helpful whennding your way back to camp or thetrail head.

    1. Select > TrackManagr>Currnt Track> Viw Map.

    2. Select TracBack.

    The map page opens with yourroute marked with a magenta line.

    3. Navigate using the map (page 17)or compass (page 19).

    Marking and StartingNavigation to a Man OverboardLocationYou can save a man overboard (MOB)location, and automatically startnavigation back to it.

    Browsing the Map1. Select Map.

    Drag the map to view differentareas.

    Select +and -to zoom in andout of the map.

    Navigating a Driving Route

    CAUTIONYou can permanently damage your earsand lose hearing if you listen to thedevice, earbuds, or headphones at highvolume. Limit the amount of time youlisten at high volume. If you experience

    ringing in your ears or mufed speech,stop listening and have your hearingchecked.

    Before you can use the map, you mustpurchase and load City Navigator

    maps. If you plan to use an auto mountaccessory with the device, you mustalso purchase and install the mount inyour vehicle.

    1. Select an option:

    If you are using a mount withthe device, install the device inthe mount.

    Automotive prole is selectedautomatically.

    If you are not using a mountwith the device, select >Prl Chang > Autmtiv.

    2. If you are not using a mount withthe device, connect headphones or

    an audio line-out cable to the stereoheadphone jack.

    3. Use the map to navigate to thedestination.

    4. Listen to the voice prompts.

    NoTe: If nothing is connected tothe headphone jack, audio toneswill replace the voice prompts.

    5. Follow the turns in the text baralong the top of the map.

    CompassThe device has a 3-axis compass. You

    can use a bearing pointer or a coursepointer to navigate to your destination.

    NoTe: When the device is in an automount, the compass displays GPSheading, not magnetic heading.

    Calibrating the Compass

    notice

    Calibrate the electronic compassoutdoors. To improve heading

    accuracy, do not stand near objects thatinuence magnetic elds, such as cars,buildings, or overhead power lines.

    You should calibrate the compass aftermoving long distances, experiencing

    temperature changes, or changing thebatteries.

    1. Select Cmpass> > CalibratCmpass> Start.

    2. Follow the on-screen instructions.

    Navigating with the BearingPointerWhen navigating to a destination,the bearing pointer points to yourdestination, regardless of the directionyou are moving.

    1. Begin navigation to a destination(page 16).

    2. Select Cmpass.3. Turn until points toward the

    top of the compass, and continuemoving in that direction to thedestination.

    About the Course PointerThe course pointer is most useful if you

    are navigating on water or where thereare no major obstacles in your path.

    The course pointer indicates yourrelationship to a course line leadingto the destination. The course lineto your destination is based on youroriginal starting point.

    As you drift from the intended courseto the destination, the course deviation

    indicator (CDI) provides theindication of drift (right or left) fromthe course.

    The scale refers to the distancebetween dots on the course deviation

    indicator.

    Navigating with the Course Pointer

    Before you can navigate with thecourse pointer, you must changethe pointer setting to Curs (CDI)

    (page 40).

    1. Begin navigation to a destination(page 16).

    2. Select Cmpass.

    3. Use the course pointer to navigateto the destination (page 20).

    Elevation PlotBy default, the elevation plot displays

    the elevation for an elapsed time.To customize the elevation plot, seepage 40.

    Select > elvatin Plt.

    Changing the Plot TypeYou can change the elevation plot todisplay pressure and elevation overtime or distance.

    1. Select > elvatin Plt> >

    Chang Plt Typ.2. Select an option.

    Viewing Details about a Pointon the Plot

    Select an individual point on the

    plot.

    Details about the point appear inthe upper-left corner of the plot.

    Resetting the Elevation PlotSelect > elvatin Plt>

    > Rst >Clar Currnt Track>Ys.

    Calibrating the BarometricAltimeterYou can manually calibrate the

    barometric altimeter if you knowthe correct elevation or the correctbarometric pressure.

    1. Go to a location where the elevationor barometric pressure is known.

    2. Select > elvatin Plt> >Calibrat Altimtr.

    3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

    Trip ComputerThe trip computer displays your current

    speed, average speed, maximumspeed, trip odometer, and other helpfulstatistics.

    To customize the trip computer, seepage 33.

    Resetting the Trip DataFor accurate information, reset the tripinformation before beginning a trip.

    Select > Trip Cmputr>

    > Rst Trip Data> Ys.

    All of the trip computer values areset to zero.

    1. Turn the D-ring counter-clockwise,

    and pull up to remove the cover.2. Remove the batteries or battery.

    3. Slide the card holdertowardthe top edge of the device and liftup, as instructed in the battery

    compartment.

    4. Place the microSD cardin thedevice with the gold contacts facing

    down.5. Close the card holder.

    6. Slide the card holder toward thebottom of the device to lock it.

    7. Replace the batteries (page 2).

    8. Replace the battery cover, and turnthe D-ring clockwise.

    Connecting the Device to aComputer

    noticeTo prevent corrosion, thoroughlydry the mini-USB port, the weathercap, and the surrounding area beforecharging or connecting to a computer.

    The lithium-ion battery pack willcharge while connected to thecomputer.

    Optional MountsThe AMPS Rugged Mount provides amount and cable that provides power,serial data (NMEA-compliant), and

    audio.

    The auto mounts kits contain a vehiclepower cable and either a suction cupmount or a friction mount. Whenused with City Navigator maps,

    voice prompts are sounded throughthe speakers on the mount. The automounts are not waterproof.
