Hasquet Beats Course RecordGeorge Geise, MSGA Board of Directors

Most Montana golfers are suffering through late-winter or early-spring doldrums, but Bob Hasquet obviously isn’t one of them. The Missoula man recently achieved midseason form – and then some – a few weeks into the official season.

On April 17, during a friendly round at the Missoula Country Club, Hasquet shot a 10-under-par 61 that included 11 birdies,

six pars and a single bogey. That bogey – on No. 4 – must have upset Hasquet greatly because he reeled off birdies on the next seven holes. He added birdies on Nos. 16 and 18 on his stretch run to set a new course record at Missoula CC, which has been in existence for more than 100 years.

“It was a good time,” said Hasquet, in a bit of understatement. “I was hitting it pretty close (to the pin) and I didn’t miss any putts.” He fired nines of 29-32, and his group played from the Blue tees.

Missoula CC professional Connor Sproull verified the course record on the club’s Facebook page. The previous mark was 62, first shot by former British Open champion Bob Charles in an exhibition many years ago, and later matched by Shawn Tucker of Whitefish in a non-tourney round.

“There’s always a debate about course records because obviously we weren’t playing in a tournament,” said Hasquet, a Shelby native who has been one of the top players in Missoula for the past decade. “We putted out everything, and we had a pretty good cash game going, so every shot meant something.”

Hasquet’s playing partners were Joe Johnston, Akku Acharya, Mark Glidewell, and Todd Hober.

2020 Montana State Seniors Tournament Kevin Hayes, MSSGA Executive Director

The Montana State Seniors Golf Association (MSSGA) is scheduled to hold its 2020 State Senior Golf Tournament on August 4-6 in Missoula, though COVID-19 concerns could alter the event. The MSSGA is continuing to monitor current

recommendations, and will post tournament updates on our website at www.mtseniorgolf.org as the situation develops. The MSSGA is hopeful at this time, however, that the tournament will be played.

The tournament annually attracts over 320 golfers. This year players are slated to play one round each at Canyon River GC, Larchmont GC, and The Ranch Club. Golfers must be MSSGA members to be eligible to play in the tournament. MSSGA membership is open to any male golfer who is age 55 or older on or before July 31 of this year and meets residency qualifications. Tournament entry forms will be mailed to all current MSSGA mem-bers at the end of May.

For more information or to become an MSSGA member, please visit the MSSGA website at www.mtseniorgolf.org. You can also contact Kevin Hayes by email at [email protected] or by phone/text at (406) 439-0814. The tournament fills quickly once applications are sent out, so if you are interested in playing in the tournament, but are not yet an MSSGA member, please submit your membership form and $50 annual dues as soon as possible in order to receive a tournament entry form at the end of the month.

Join Youth On Course Today!Emily Hulsey, MSGA Handicap and Website Coordinator

Last season, the MSGA joined forces with Youth on Course (YOC), a program that brings affordable golf to our juniors. Youth on Course memberships are available to kids 6-18 yrs for $15/year, which enables them to play at over 1,300 courses nationwide for $5 or less. When you join YOC, you also get a free junior MSGA member-ship. For more information about YOC, please visit youthoncourse.org.

To join YOC, you can go to msgagolf.org/youth-on-course, where you will also find a list of participating courses in Montana. Last season, we had 15 of our 95 clubs participate, and we have 6 more on the pending list for 2020.

If you were a YOC member last year, simply log in to the MSGA website and click "Renew membership" to renew for this season. Note: In a family with multiple children, each child will need to log in and renew separately. If you need login information, please contact us at [email protected].

If your course is interested in signing up for Youth on Course, click here to submit a Course Interest Form.

MSGA Board of DirectorsJim Opitz, MSGA Executive Director

I want to introduce the golfing community of Montana to the MSGA Board of Directors. The Board is a group of twenty vol-unteers who donate their time to help improve golf in the Big Sky. These men and women are involved in many different activities that promote our great game. Some are course raters that make

the USGA Handicap System work. Others promote and organize our junior program, including scholarships and competitions for our future golfers. Still others help raise money so that the MSGA can offer summer grants to promote our game in all four corners of our great state. The list could go on and on of the good these volunteers do for the MSGA. Suffice it to say that the love for our game continues to be a driving force behind the good work they do.

The MSGA and the state of Montana are fortunate to have these men and women involved in promoting golf in Montana.

MULTIPLE RECORDS The World Handicap System re-quires that multi-members have just one ID# and score record, which they will share between clubs and/or associations that they belong to. If this describes you, do you still have more than one active ID# and score record? If so, please contact us so that we can get you set up.

Your association membership is more than just having a handicap! You are supporting association functions that benefit all golfers, so sharing a record allows multi-mem-bers to support both associations.
