FEMA Disaster Reporter App Data Call

• FEMA sought assistance from all national CERT programs to highlight and demonstrate their capacity as citizens and trained volunteers to provide accurate, on‐the‐ground situational awareness and augment the capabilities of professional responders during disasters

• Montgomery County CERT assist with a particular time‐sensitive portion of initiative 

• Provided input to tool in less than 24 hours on Thursday, May 29th before noon

• Used our own mobile device(s)

• Learned of the request through a global message to all CERTs nationally 

• Confident we could provide enough substantial data for their needs AND WE WERE RIGHT!

• Showed how responsive our county can be!

• Directions for downloading the app and inputting a standardized message were provided on our website less than 24 hours from the due date

• At the conclusion, we remained being known as a reputable and outstanding CERT organization through our fulfillment of this ad hoc responsibility.

Annual CERT WMATA Drill

• Date: June 14th, 9:00am to 12:00pm • Location: Carmen Turner Training Facility in Landover, Maryland• Class size limited to 9 CERT members• Will be training in a mock‐up of a Metro tunnel complete with a 

two‐car train, third‐rail, and evacuation catwalk (plus a lot of special effect smoke and fire)

• Will board the Emergency Evacuation Simulator, a passenger rail car capable of turning 180 degrees onto its roof for first responder evacuation training

• Personal protective equipment requirements strictly enforced for personnel entering the roadway (proper foot wear)

• Please wear your uniform shirt (blue or tan)

CapShield 15 (CS15) Interagency Emergency Management Exercise 

• CS15 is the week of September 21st• There has been no confirmation on location or exact dates yet• Capital Shield is an interagency emergency management 

exercise working with and among subordinate units, service components, and local and Federal inter‐agency mission partners.

CPR Friends and Family 

• Determining a date and time in the near future• Please monitor CERVIS’ calendar of events

– The class will be entered when determined

• The CPR Coordinator would like to offer larger classes • We will try to find a date in summer • CERVIS has the capability of determining which members’ CPR 

credentials are about to expire, so in addition to offering the training to the family and friends, that data will drive who will be sent an email

April/ May CERT Class

• Successfully completed on May 17th

Results of May 10th Storm Camp

• First ever road show of Storm Camp• Held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 

Germantown, MD• Number of attendees less than the first Storm Camp offered 

in March; however, this was anticipated– It remains of significant value and we will continue with the program 

in the fall

Future Storm Camp

• We’re looking for the next date – hopefully in September, which is National Preparedness month

• At the latest we would like it to be the first week in October• Working hard to obtain a media sponsor, which would assist 

greatly with this program

American Red Cross Potential Partnership

• We met with officials from Montgomery County Chapter of the American Red Cross (ARC) during the MEMA conference in May

• Among topics covered was the potential for ARC to offer a special class of Psychological First Aid to Montgomery County CERT.

CERT Class for Choice Hotels

• CERT class offered to Choice Hotels began this month• Location: 1 Choice Hotels Circle, Rockville, MD• Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday• 9:00am until noon• Mock Victims needed for the final practical scheduled for 

Thursday, June 26th– Note that this is a weekday, so we anticipate some challenges with getting 

a substantial number of mock victims…if you can participate, please contact the Training Coordinator at [email protected]

Next CERT Training Class

• At the June Steering Committee meeting, it was decided the next CERT class will begin October 8th and be held on Wednesdays and Saturdays

• The final practical will be held on November 15th

• Successful collaborative effort with MCPS once again

• Event held on Saturday, May 10th

• Hundreds of prospective college students were in attendance

• To be held in Prince Georges County• Awaiting additional information from our colleagues in Prince 

Georges County – specifically exact dates and location• They initially indicated that they were moving the conference 

to September, but we have been unable to confirm• Once we attain the information, we will announce it at the 

General Meeting and also create a CERVIS event

Social Media Policy

• Approved at the June Steering Committee– The official social media accounts for Montgomery County CERT are: Twitter (@MontCoCert); 

Facebook (Montgomery County CERT); and Pinterest (MontCoCert)

– No member may create a new official or unofficial MC‐CERT account on any social media site without permission from the Board.

– Social Media Coordinator is responsible for ensuring training completion prior to providing login credentials. 

– Members posting on official accounts may not use the accounts to express political/ideological opinions; religious statements; offensive, profane, or abusive materials; or personally‐identifiable information.

– During actual deployments, no photos of the incident or victims may be used on the official or personal social media accounts without the permission of the President and Program Manager. 

– Members should remember to abide by the full MC‐CERT Code of Conduct in both online and offline representations.

• We are being viewed nationally as a CERT organization that leads and accepts new and unique assignments that benefit the community in ways never tried before! Did you hear that? NATIONALLY!...not just the National Capital Region, but NATIONALLY!

• We will be featured in the June/July issue of the national CERT Newsletter.
