IS IT LOVE THAT MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND?

No one who has ever raised or taught a child can doubt for a second that love is literally the life-giving fluid of human existence. Love doesn’t make the world go round. Love is what makes the ride worthwhile. It is our love of children that led us to choose a career that served children because we have always known that children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future. And it is this love for and commitment to the well-being of our county’s youth that has been the driving force behind our association’s highly successful Toolkits, Books, and Backpacks Project for the last nine years. Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it. So here are a few “presents” for all of you who so generously donated your time, talents and money so that nearly 1,300 kindergartners received toolkits of school supplies, some 1,150 first graders took home a new book at summer’s end, and over 20 homeless children had new backpacks of school supplies to start school this year. The following are just a very few of the hundreds of Thank You notes written and sent to us with love from the Title I ELO SAIL Summer School children. Sammy and Donny from Weller Road ES write, “Thank you SO MUCH for the book! I love the story about Little Bill. Reading is SO MUCH fun! I LOVE the book you gave me!” Mrs. Petty from Glen Haven ES wrote, “Thank you for the books. My 1st grade class LOVES the book. They are SO excited to be able to take the book home to have and to read.” Also Ms. Talley from the same school wrote, “Thank you so much for the kind thoughtfulness you have shown by giving our first graders a book! Each book they read makes reading a more enjoyable and meaningful endeavor.” Mr. Lyst's kindergartners sent a huge THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH! card signed by all the children that said, “. . (we) want to say thank you for the AWESOME “stuff” you gave us. WE LOVE IT!!” When asked to draw his favorite thing in his toolkit, Alejandro drew one of every item because he loved everything. Can you feel their love? What a present that is! With much appreciation, we wish to acknowledge the generosity of the many individuals, corporate sponsors, civic organizations, business establishments, and grant providers who assured the success of our project this summer: over 240 individual donors who collectively contributed nearly $17,000, MCT Federal Credit Union for its annual $1,000 as well as rulers and erasers for in the toolkits, Nancy Coulter (Germantown store) and the Target Corporation for giving us the shoe boxes at cost, $100 in gift cards, and a $2,000 grant, John Girouard at Capital Investment Advisors, Inc. and ING for 1500 pencils, Amy Grosso and Beau Brown with California Casualty for pencils and markers, Jon Gerson of MCEA for a pencil sharpener for each kit, generous monetary donations from the Women’s Community Club of Kensington, the Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, and the Upsilon and Alpha Iota Chapters of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. A very special thanks goes to Eboni Walker, member of the Alpha Iota Chapter of DKG and kindergarten teacher at Sargent Shriver ES, for compiling the information and completing the application for the $2,000 from Target. We thank all who donated, sorted and helped bag nearly 28,000 bottle caps that were included in the toolkits as math counters. Special thanks go to Orlando (Lanny) Taylor and his crew at the MCPS Materials and Distribution Center. Each year Lanny provides warehouse space to assemble the kits, orders the items for the toolkits, and sees to it that the kits and backpacks are delivered to the summer school sites. He has been the true key to our project’s success for the last nine years. Last, but certainly not least, thanks to Nichelle Owens-Jones, Lynda Wainwright, and all the Title I specialists who co-ordinate this project each summer and conduct parent trainings on how to use the items and lesson plans in the toolkits. Thanks once again to all of you for your “presents” of love through this most worthwhile project for needy children. It is now time to start fundraising all over again to assure that our project can continue to provide school supplies, books, and backpacks for our county’s neediest children next summer. This is a milestone for our project – our tenth year! Is it love that makes the world go round? No, it’s what makes the ride worthwhile. Please share your love with a child by sending a tax-deductible contribution for the very worthwhile project. Thank you for your generosity and compassion. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _detach here_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

OCTOBER 25 LUNCHEON SPEAKER Are you comfortable going to your car in a darkened parking lot? Does ordering something “on-line” give you concerns? How about those weird e-mails asking you to help someone in Nigeria claim millions of dollars? What about the door to door sales person offering to trim your trees or do household repairs? Who can you trust and how can you protect yourself? We seniors are sometimes highly vulnerable to criminal activity. We can all benefit from more knowledge about what to look for and how to protect ourselves from becoming the victims of crime. With that knowledge, we can be more safe, secure and self-confident. Our October luncheon speaker is Officer Dana Stroman of the Montgomery County Police Department. She has been the Community Services Officer for the past 13 years serving as the liaison between the residents and citizens of the 2nd District (Bethesda) and the Police Department. Officer

Stroman serves as a member of the Maryland Community Crime Prevention Institute Committee that focuses on crime prevention for the state of Maryland. She is a certified crime prevention specialist and has conducted numerous security assessments for residential and commercial establishments. Officer Stroman has a BS in Criminal Justice from University of North Carolina, does many presentations for community groups on topics including Neighborhood Watch, personal safety, workplace safety, campus safety and identity theft. Be sure to join us for the luncheon to hear answers to these and other questions concerning our personal safety. MCPSRA COMMITTEE Our association has many important and active standing committees that serve our members in a wide variety of ways. Responsibilities of several of them have been described in the newsletter throughout 2011-2012. Recognition Committee The Recognition Committee is charged with the duties of keeping records and informing the members of the MCPSRA and its Board of Directors of the death of any members as well as sending an appropriate expression of sympathy to the families of the deceased. We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our dedicated colleagues and friends and wish to express how dearly they will be missed. At the beginning of each month Jo Owens from the Business Systems Office for MCPS informs this committee, along with the chairpersons of our local as well as state membership committees, of all retired MCPS employees who have passed away in the last three months. Then this committee identifies those on the list who were MCPSRA members and cards are sent. Sometimes names of deceased members are not reported immediately, thus preventing us from sending our sympathies in a timely fashion. An In Memoriam list is compiled and printed in each issue of the association’s newsletter. This committee also is directed to inform the members of the Board of Directors of any outstanding achievement or contribution of a member. Please contact Joan Donovan, committee chairperson, so that our members can be recognized for their efforts and hard work. GOATS FOR HAITI Dear Colleagues: Why would I sponsor the full-page ad on the next page in our Newsletter? I have been to Haiti twice and can vouch that it is the poorest country in our hemisphere. There are few public schools in Haiti and most citizens lack funds needed for private schooling. When a family is presented with a pregnant goat that goat will provide milk, meat and more goats which will enable the family to send a child to school. Finally you can be sure your contribution will be a blessing to those who need it most. Orlow Zumwalt, retired in '88

GEORGE B. THOMAS, SR LEARNING ACADEMY SATURDAY SCHOOL Opening Day for Saturday School Please join us on September 29, 2012, for the Saturday School opening celebration held at all 12 Centers! This is an exciting day for students, parents and tutors. Dr. Frieda K. Lacey Joins Learning Academy The Learning Academy is very pleased to announce that Dr. Frieda K. Lacey, former Deputy Superintendent of Montgomery County Public Schools, joined the staff in July 2012. Dr. Lacey will serve as the Director of Development in The Learning Academy’s newly formed Office of Institutional Advancement. Her responsibilities include improving private sector funding by fostering relationships and evaluating opportunities for funding. In addition, Dr. Lacey will spearhead the initiative to expand and improve the evaluation of Saturday School. Welcome, Dr. Lacey! FALL IS A GREAT TIME TO VOLUNTEER Saturday School provides a great opportunity to work with a wonderful group of students! The 2012−13 season begins on September 29, and our goal is to enroll 3,200 students this year! We need your expertise, so please consider tutoring with us this year. Both lead tutors and volunteers are needed. Individuals with certification are eligible to serve as lead tutors and will receive an hourly stipend. Those without certification can serve as volunteers. All twelve center locations are in need of both lead tutors and volunteers:

Kennedy High School • Northwest High School • Magruder High School • Paint Branch High School • Rockville High School • Sherwood High School • Springbrook High School • Watkins Mill High School • Wheaton High School

We encourage you to visit any of the centers for a tour or to observe the sessions. Just call the Saturday School office at 301-320-6545 to let us know where you will be visiting so we can make sure the center director will be available to welcome you. Tutoring sessions are held on Saturday mornings from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. beginning September 29 until May 4, 2013. Plan Ahead for Golf! It’s never too early to plan for golf! The Learning Academy’s 19th Annual Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, May 17, 2013, at Hampshire Greens Golf Course in Silver Spring. The tournament is held in the morning followed by a great barbeque lunch. Save the date—it’s a great event!

All Aboard! The Strasburg Rail Road A rail adventure to remember!

Tuesday, October 16, 2012 The 4-1/2-mile Strasburg Rail Road takes visitors on a 45-minute round-trip journey from Strasburg to Leaman Place Junction. The train includes America’s only operational wooden dining car. The Strasburg Rail Road was graded in 1835 and was operational in 1837 as a horse-drawn railroad until it purchased a Norris-built 4-2-0 steam locomotive, named the William Penn in 1851. It served the Lancaster area for about 100 years, hauling freight and passengers. A tourist excursion service began in January of 1959 upon delivery of its first steam locomotive No. 31 thereby becoming the oldest continuously operating rail service in the United States.
