Advisor: Mrs. Sarah Costel- lo Purpose: To practice and re- hearse music throughout the year, give performances, at- tend contests and festivals and support our school activ- ities Activities: Pit Orchestra for the Musical, Summer March- ing Band for parades, Fall Marching Band for football seasons, Pep Band, Jazz Band, various parades and assemblies throughout the school year Successes/highlights: A big highlight is the dedication these students show toward the band program. These students are expected to be at, and participate in a lot of various community pro- grams, supporting sport teams, as well as our own concerts and contests throughout the year. They do so with hard work and dedi- cation to promoting our music program. Comments: I have only had the pleasure to work with them the past few months, but drive and willingness to succeed is what makes this group so enjoyable to work with. Any upcoming events: We have our annual Pops Con- cert on May 17. We serve dinner starting at 6 p.m., hav- ing small groups and solos for musical entertainment. There is a short dessert inter- mission followed by the band and choir concert. The band will also be performing for the graduation ceremony as well as participating in local Memorial Day parades. Purpose: These groups re-hearse a variety of music be-cause of their love of singing.They also work to give pub-lic performances.

Comments: Both of thesegroups are comprised of stu-dents with many varied inter-

ests, but they all work ex-tremely hard in rehearsal toproduce the best product theypossibly can. They are alldrawn together through theirlove of music and singing.This activity is special be-cause of the music that wecreate together as well as therelationships that studentsgrow and gain throughout theprocess. This group becomesa family with a commongoal.

Name of Activity: Senior High KnowledgeBowl

Advisor: Ted Doyle

Purpose: Jeopardy-Style competitionagainst other Minnesota schools utilizingcontent in Mathematics, Science, Geography,History, English, Literature, and currentevents.

Number of members: 30

Activities during the season: Five regularseason meets, followed by Sub-Regions, Re-gions, and State.

Successes/highlights: TCU Black placed inthe top four teams at all five regular seasonmeets. TCU Blue placed third in the firstmeet of the season. Both TCU Black andTCU Blue qualified for Regional competi-tion. TCU Black team was awarded the

"Spirit Award" at Regions. TCU Blackplaced fourth out of 18 teams at regions andmissed continuing on to State competition byfive points.

Comments: This was a very successful yearfor the Titans, placing in the medals at allmeets. We had a solid crew of seniors lead-ing the team this year. Although they will bemissed, there are many strong freshman,sophomore, and junior participants whoshow great potential for future seasons.

What makes this activity special? This isthe only school-sponsored activity where stu-dents can take what they learn every day intheir classes and use it to compete againstother schools.

Final comments on how the year went?This was a year of competitive success and ayear of growth for the younger members.

Purpose: Our mission is:1) To raise awareness withinthe school and community ofsocial and economic issuesaround the world, 2) To pro-vide opportunities for stu-dents to advocate for peoplein need; and 3) To improveeconomic and social condi-tions globally through aware-ness and fundraising efforts

Number of members: Wehave about 40 students in-volved this year who partici-pate as much or a little asthey want. There is no fee tojoin or registration process.

Officers and their grades:We have five student leaders.These leaders applied at thebeginning of the year andwere determined by the advi-sors. They are Alexys Boyd,Alyson Hennen, KaileyHoffman, Ashley Roemhildtand Sophie Franek.

Successes/highlights duringthe season: We have partici-pated in several local andglobal events. For Halloweenwe participated in W.E. ScareHunger. We teamed up withFFA to collect food for localfood shelves. This winterEmily Weldon and AriKrautkremer led a projectcalled W.E. Give Valentines.We made Valentines for resi-dents of local assisted livinghomes. We also did a project

called W.E. Give Warmthand collected winter clothingfor local families in need.This was through an organi-zation in Mankato. It was ledby Alexys Boyd and KaileyHoffman.

What makes this activityspecial? All projects are stu-dent-led, and there is no ex-trinsic reward for participat-ing other than the opportuni-ty to letter in W.E. Team. Thestudents in this organizationare impressive because theytruly want to help others.

Any upcoming events? OnMay 10 during Titan Time,all TCU HS students have theopportunity to participate in

a global effort called W.E.Walk for Water. Studentshave the opportunity to raiseawareness for the need toclean water in other coun-tries. They also will collectdonations to help our efforts.This project is led by ShariaSteece, Alyson Hennen andIsabelle Hennen. We alsohave a project called W.E.Collect Books for Africacoming up. This group willcollect books for an organi-zation who provides them tostudents in Africa who don'thave access to books or con-sistent education. The leadersof this project are JessicaDull, Rachel Way, ReaganGaul, and Allison Schley.

They are often referred toas the “best of the best” or the“leaders of student bodies”.

On Wednesday, April 24,the National Honor Societyof Tri-City United HighSchool inducted 19 leadersinto its chapter during a tradi-tional candle lighting cere-mony.

The evening was punctuat-ed with words of wisdomfrom school administratorsand ceremony by NHS mem-bers.

National Honor SocietyPresident Thomas Budin,Vice President CarolynMikel, Secretary Ellie Sin-gleton, and PR Officer Mag-gie Trnka lit the ceremonialcandles, representing thetenets of scholarship, leader-ship, service, character andcitizenship prior to the induc-tion of new members.

The new inductees are Pre-ston Anderson, JordynBrownlee, Anabelle Davies,Jessica Dull, Jack Erickson,Deacon Finkenbiner, MarissaGare, Reagan Gaul, KaitlynGoettl-Rutt, Alexis Lara,Arya Menk, AlexisNeubauer, Alexis O’Connell,Josie Plut, Rachel Rynda, Al-lison Schley, Sharia Steece,

Rachel Way and NikaijaYoung. Their inductionbrings the TCU chapter to 55members.

Superintendent TeriPreisler said the inductionwas being held because ofthe choices and actions thestudents have demonstrated.She said to be an effectiveleader, they need to learnhow to lead themselves, en-couraging them to stay trueto themselves and not followthe crowd, get comfortablebeing uncomfortable, andfocus on the longterm.

She cited the charactersfrom the “Wizard of Oz” say-ing, “Use what you alreadyhave.”

High School PrincipalAlan Fitterer commendedand applauded the group ofstudents, who he says, natu-rally go above and beyondthe role of a student. He saidNHS students help those whoneed it and should strive towork to make the earth a bet-ter place.

“We all have the ability.Let’s put it to good use,” hesaid.

During the season studentsparticipated in countless ser-vice projects, including theTC Marathon, blood drives,classroom help, painting pro-

jects, and various communityvolunteer opportunities.

The NHS advisors areAmy Alberg and Erin Win-ters. They said students inNHS are recognized as ex-celling in the four pillars ofscholarship, leadership, char-acter and service, and contin-ue to demonstrate themthroughout their remainingtime in high school.

“It's a great activity toshow the importance of ser-vice and maintaining a bal-ance,” Alberg commented.

National Honor Society inducts ‘Best of the Best’

The National Honor Society TCU Chapter includes 55 members after last week’s induction ceremony.

Purpose: We are a leader-ship organization at Tri-CityUnited High School that op-erates the school store andon-line TCU store site. Wetake pride in creating andmarketing the annual TCUhomecoming T-shirt to allfour grade level buildings inthe district. Our goal is tocreate awareness for Profes-sionalism and individual ca-reer development by compet-ing in events at the regionallevel in hopes of advancingto State or National Leader-ship Conference levels.

The content we study andcompete in are the following:Finance (15 events), Busi-ness Administration (16

events), Management Infor-mation Systems (12 events),Digital Communication &Design (10 events), andManagement, Marketing &Communication (17 events).

In addition, we give stu-dents an opportunity to runfor local and state officer po-sitions which teaches stu-dents how to become strongleaders.Officers: President, BrandonBalma; Vice President, SarahColwell; Treasurer, JaidenTrnka; Communications,Ellie Singleton; School StoreAmbassador, Kaitlyn Lind-blom; School Store Manager,Heather Johnson.Successes: This year was ourbest showing at state.
