Grade 4 FIELD TRIP TO THE NEHRU SCIENCE CENTRE
Our visit to the Nehru Science Centre was on the 9th of November. All geared with caps,
water bottles, food and lots of enthusiasm, we boarded our bus and set out on our field trip.
Here’s how it all began. First we watched an exciting 3-D film called “SOS Planet”.
While watching this 3D-Film, we experienced realistic visuals that appeared to come out from the screen right in
front of our eyes. From the depths of the ocean to the chill of the Arctic and the thrill of the jungle, “SOS Planet”
explored the plight of our fragile planet and its changing environments. This stunning 3D animation film followed
the pandas, orangutans, snakes, turtles, polar bears, and other creatures and explored their habitats, as well as the
effects of global warming, deforestation, and depletion of the ocean species. It was fun to watch this 3D film
through specially designed glasses.
The second show we watched was “Science on a Sphere”, which was also very interesting to watch. Actually, it was
a breathtaking experience. It provided real time atmospheric and climatic data that were projected on the 1.8
meter Spherical Earth globe. The giant animated sphere appeared to be floating in mid-air, and even seemed to be
rotating on its axis. One could see the continents in their actual colours as seen from outer space.
After spending some time in the “Hall of Evolution”, it was time to return back to school, where we reflected about
what we had learned.
This educational experience will surely be treasured forever.

Action (learning by doing and experiencing) is a key component in constructivist models of education, including the kind of teaching and learning common to all IB programs. Service, as a subset of action, has always been a shared value of the IB community. IB learners strive to be caring members of the community who demonstrate a personal commitment to service and act to make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment. Service requires that students are able to build authentic connections between what they learn in the classroom and what they encounter in the community. When connected to classroom learning, the experience of service offers opportunities to apply concepts, both skills and knowledge, as students explore the community in its complexity, gain personal insight, develop existing and new skills, and grow in confidence and responsibility as they become “actors” in the “real world” beyond school. Teachers in the school engage students in applying subject matter to developing plans and partnerships to meet real identified needs using a service-learning model. Experiencing a service learning approach within an academic class becomes a critical and essential process for students. Guided or classroom learning that leads to action addressing an authentic community need is most meaningful when allowing for student initiative that incorporates their interests, skills and talents. By reflecting on their service experience, students may gain a greater awareness of the community and world they live in, and their role and responsibility in improving the lives of themselves and others. Service For and With Others Service activities should evolve beyond simply doing for others to engaging with others in a shared commitment towards the common good. Meaningful service requires understanding of an underlying issue such as poverty, literacy or pollution, and authenticating the need for this service. Meaningful service includes interaction, such as building links with individuals or groups in the community.

MYP: From principles into practice, 2014) As a part of our IB curriculum, pertaining to our subjects ,we are required to complete activities planned in the Service as action periods. Our English teacher, Ms. Meera Rangarajan, planned an activity based on a unit from our English Main Course Reader.
We were asked to give a try and on our own and write a HAIKU-a kind of descriptive poem. Further, we had long discussions on how to go about this activity- from cleaning the earthen bowl to writing a haiku! We wore our thinking caps to decorate the earthen bowls with bright colour paints and multicolour gem stones and write our
own,“Haiku based on Deepavali”. From this
activity, we also understood that it was ideal to celebrate Diwali in an eco-friendly way! Before the Diwali break, we sold the items to the staff members and we
too bought one each! The proceeds from this sale are for charity.

Service and Action in the MYP- UNIT INITIATED ACTIVITY
What were the MYP Learning Outcomes for this activity? We became more aware of our own strengths when we painted and decorated the earthen pots, and areas for growth when we had to write our own haikus We had to convince teachers to buy our items and honed our communication skills while marketing our products We are thankful to Ms. Meera and all the staff members who helped us in making this activity a success.

HELLO!!!!!! Here is HALLOWEEN!!!!
Halloween or Hallowe'en (a contraction of All Hallows' Evening),also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows' Eve or All Saints' Eve, is a celebration observed in a number of countries on 31 October every year which is the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows' Day. It begins the three-day observance of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed. Halloween activities include trick-or-treating (or the related guising), attending Halloween costume parties, carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, divination games, playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories and watching horror films. In many parts of the world, the Christian religious observances of All Hallows' Eve, including attending church services and lighting candles on the graves of the dead, remain popular, although elsewhere it is a more commercial and secular celebration. Some Christians historically abstained from meat on All Hallows' Eve, a tradition reflected in the eating of certain foods on this vigil day, including apples, potato pancakes and soul cakes.
Since we were breaking for Diwali celebrations from 28 Oct 2016, students from MYP and DP on 25 Oct 2016 celebrated Halloween. This happened during the first period of Day 6 and it was our French lessons! We had learnt earlier about how Halloween is celebrated in France. All of us who study French went for trick or treating and the teachers treated with us chocolates. We enjoyed the time when we went to Mr Himat Singh’s class because he really scared us before giving us chocolates! Those chocolates were indeed delicious! When we came back to class, our baskets were full of candies and chocolates!
On that day, the whole of MYP wore cool new Halloween
costumes. We all looked and sounded scary in our costumes! But,
it was even better when we wore them all day!

REFLECTION ON OUR DESIGN PROJECT
Since our Design project is focused on sports, we needed some professional thoughts on the subject. We invited our sports teacher, Mr Victor to be a guest speaker and to talk to us about the benefits of sports and physical activity. He told us that other than just the desire to go and play, there should also be enough place for children to run freely. Also, he explained that nowadays, builders and architects do not seem to pay heed to the play areas and often, almost all of the land they have available is just used to build residential and commercial spaces. This information will help us with our projects. -SAESHA AYYAR
GRADE 7
We, the students of Grade 7, have been working to identify problems modern day kids face due to lack of physical activity. Nowadays, addiction to electronic gadgets like mobile phones, tablets, and video games has made children abandon outdoor play and activities. We, as a class, are making a PowerPoint presentation to create awareness among grade 6 students on the importance of sports in life. We invited Mr Victor as a guest speaker to look into our ideas and give suggestions if any. It was very kind of him to come to our class to give us guidance on our Design Project.

Stress Management
Today, on the 11th November 2016, we had a stress management session in our school in the auditorium for the
students from Grade 9 to 12. It aimed at the students who were finding difficulties in completing the specified portion
for the examinations and to improve their discipline.
It was conducted by staff members of Med Mondial In this session, we were explained that the stress cycle which
included some specific terms in the following order -thoughts -> feelings -> reaction -> impact. We were explained
that stress starts with thoughts. For eg. when a teacher shouts at us, some thoughts come into our minds like he/she is
so rude, etc. Then comes feelings like that teacher shouted at me for no reason. Followed by it is the reaction like you
back answer the teacher resulting in an impact like detention for a week.
Next was the stress reducing tips. This included some norms that help us loose stress in both short term and long term
duration. Breathing exercises like Anulom-Vilom and Brahmari were taught in the unknown correct way and an acu-
pressure exercise of exerting pressure on the legs with the aid of the knees, shoulders and neck. The acu-pressure
exercise was prescribed for the long-term duration as it takes sometimes even more than 2 months to take effect on
our bodies.
Then we were introduced to the new meaning of SMART that is Specific, Measurable, Attainable/Achievable,
Relevant, Timely. It taught us to be:
Specific about anything that we want to do like to study at IIT Mumbai.
Measurable about everything like I want to score 95% in my current academic examination.
Attainable/Achievable for everything like think only that you are capable of accomplishing.
Relevant for all topics like to set goals that will help you in something.
Timely in everything like set a time limit for it and try as hard as possible to complete in that time set time period.
Then there were simple things that we very well know but hardly remember to do. Those were having a short walk
after every 45 minutes of seating to reduce stress, and to change the posture of the body for long-term comfort. To
take every situation calmly, with a cool mind, without shouting or getting freaked out. And if you want a stress
buster, then this is the one you are looking for. It is just doing deep breathing but at a slow pace, say fill your lungs to
the maximum capacity in an easy 5 seconds and release it in 5 seconds. This will surely help in making your mind
and mood better and increase its efficiency.
It was a short session but indeed a helpful and informative one. I am sure, many of the session attenders will follow
the above norms to improve their abilities and efficiency. I whole heartedly thank [the person] to visit our school and
conduct this amazing session. Although it was a short one, the students won’t regret to have a couple of these
sessions for their betterment.
