MOVING INTO A NEW HOME IS A LOT OF HARD WORK, BUT
IT IS ESPECIALLY DIFFICULT IF YOU WAIT UNTIL THE LAST
MINUTE TO GET EVERYTHING READY TO GO. FORTUNATELY,
THERE ARE WAYS TO MAKE THINGS A LITTLE BIT EASIER.
YOU WONT BE ABLE TO GET AROUND 90 PERCENT OF THE
PACKING AND PREP WORK, BUT YOU CAN SPREAD OUT EV-
ERYTHING YOU NEED TO DO OVER A MONTH. ALL YOU NEED
TO DO IS FOLLOW THIS HANDY CHECKLIST TO MAKE YOUR
MOVE AS STRESS-FREE AS IT CAN GET.

DOWNSIZE
The first thing you should do in the month before
your move is to downsize your belongings. Packing
is probably the most time-consuming part of mov-
ing, so it stands to reason that giving yourself less to
pack will make the going a lot easier. You can have a
moving garage sale four weeks before your move-
in date, donate what you dont need to thrift stores
or see if your friends and family want some of whatyou dont want or cant have in your new home. If
you decide to donate some of your belongings, you
might even be able to deduct it from your taxes.

TAKE INVENTORY
After youve sold or donated every-
thing you dont want to take with you,
your next step is to take inventory of
everything that will go into your new
home. Things are lost in moves all the
time, and the last thing you want is for
something valuable to you to disap-
pear on the way to your new home.
Make a list of all of your belongings,
and take note of the condition theyre
in. If youve hired a moving company
and they accidentally damage some-
thing of yours, you can and should be
reimbursed for it.

GATHER YOURMOST IMPORTANTDOCUMENTS
You should always have documents such as iden-tification, mortgage papers, insurance binders and
birth certificates in a safe survival box whether
or not youre moving into a new home. This box
should be in a place that is easy to find so you can
just pick it up and take it when its time to relocate
to a new home. Double and triple check it to make
sure you have everything before you move.

CHANGE YOUR ADDRESS
Changing your address is a simple matter, but it is one
that is very important. You could technically do this after
youve moved in, but you could miss important letters,
bills and packages as theyre sent to your old address.
You should make this change well before youre settledinto your new home to make sure you start getting your
mail as soon as youre moved in.

GIVE NOTICEIf you were renting your previous home, you need
to provide your landlord with advance notice
before you move out. Your lease will tell you
how much advance notice you need to provide,
but common courtesy dictates that you make
arrangements in writing at least 30 days before
your move-out date.
You should have electricity, gas
and water as soon as you move
into your new home, so call and
transfer all of your services one
month before your move-in date.Call to double check that every-
thing is scheduled to transfer a
week before you move.

GET TO KNOWYOUR NEWNEIGHBORHOOD
Part of the fun of moving into a new home is exploring your new
surroundings. You will have plenty of time to scope out restau-
rants and shopping centers after youve moved in, but you should
take the time to learn where the closest hospital, grocery stores
and drug stores are before you relocate. Emergencies can hap-
pen at any time, and you want to be prepared for the worst.

FIND EMERGENCY
ACCOMMODATIONS
START PACKING
If your move is a long-distance one, you may need to stop
on the way to rest. If you have friends or family along the
way who can give you a place to sleep for a night, contact
them and let them know you may need their help. If not,
find out if there are any inexpensive hotels or motels you
can stay in if need be. Set aside some money for this.
Packing up everything in a house or apartment will
take more time than you can imagine. You can tell
yourself you don't have a lot and that it won't take
long to get everything into boxes, but you should
still start early. If all goes well, you should be able
to just load everything you own onto the back of a
truck and be on your way in no time flat.
