THE RECORD September 2015 VOLUME 54

“Being the Church!”

Recently at the Sunday morning Bible Class I shared with the gathering of 55 (yes, even in summer time people are hungering for the Word!) the following three statements. Below are the statements as well as their responses. As you read, ask yourself: How would I answer? What can I add to this list?

1. What does it mean to “Be the Church?”

• Spread the Gospel • Being in the Body of Christ • Remain in Faith as a Believer in Jesus • An obligation to Live by the Word • Being Active and Involved • Support one another • Receive and use the Gifts of God • Providing financial support • Have a Servant Heart • Sharing in the Suffering & Rejoicing of Fellow Christians • Praying Together • Helping others understand “The Church” • Telling others what goes on at church and inviting them to come & become

involved. 2. The Church reminds me that…

• Jesus died for me and you • I’m not alone in trials, other Christians also have struggles • I am a sinner • I have forgiveness through Jesus • God is real • I am part of the kingdom of God • I have a responsibility to serve • I’m here to Spread the Word • God’s Great Love is also for me • We are meant to be a “Family” working together • Eternal Life is a certainty for believers in Christ

3. What I need from my Church is…

• Spiritual nourishment • Support from one another • Forgiveness • Guidance • Baptism and The Lord’s Supper • Hearing the Truth of God’s Word • Inspiration and Motivation from the Word • To make Christ personally known to me • A sense of belonging and value • Confirmation of the certainty of my salvation • To instill a healthy God pleasing pride to be a part of Christ’s Body • To instill a thankful pride for what the church stands for

These answers quickly and easily flowed from a ten minute small group interaction, which then led into a Bible study, taken from the August Lutheran Witness, entitled “Who Are We?” As you read through these answers again you will notice that a number of the same responses appeared (in varying form) in response to all three statements. You will see the Importance of the Support believers need and give to one another as we go about life and ministry together. You will see a definite sense of Purpose in both being the Church and spreading the Gospel message. And you will see the great value of God’s Word as it relates to us personally as well as to both fellow believers and the un-churched. My prayer regularly is for the Holy Spirit to instill in every member of Our Redeemer a hunger for the Word, a yearning to be “with” the Body of Christ and to instill within each of us an understanding of how to put to use the gifts and abilities He has given to each of us to carry out the work of His Kingdom. What A Joy and Blessing it is to “Be the Church” with You! Pastor Bruce Noennig

Quarterly Voter’s Meeting ---Sept 27th These meetings are preceded with “top of the line” potluck food provided by the members of the church. Don’t miss it! We also receive a free will offering which supports our Good Samaritan Fund. The voter’s meeting will primarily be sharing some updated information about items such as:

• 75th Anniversary celebration plans for 2016 • Progress on the projects being undertaken with the funds being

received for “Strive for 75” • Report from the Long Range Planning Committee and the

congregation survey they will soon conduct Plan to be present at the meeting to be informed, involved, and enjoying good food and wonderful fellowship with the “Our Redeemer Family”

THE RECORD September 2015 VOLUME 54

What do you believe? We all believe in lots of things. “I’m right—you’re wrong!” “My team is the best, they will win it all this year!” “I have too much homework!” “Winter will be very mild this year.” Yes, we all believe lots of things. But, the bottom line is that we believe in God and His Son, Jesus. When we say the creed in church, we confess to one another what we believe about God.

Who God is What God means to us What God is in our lives What God has done for us

We Believe!

If you thought the Christian movies “Fireproof”, “Courageous” and “God’s Not Dead” were powerful (and they were) then plan to see “War Room” in theaters Now. The other movies were excellent and spiritually beneficial, but pale in comparison to the impact of what the War Room says in reference in the dedicated faithful prayer life of a child of God. If you miss it at the theater, we will do our best to bring it to ORLC in the future when it is available to us.

War Room

In this time of desperation When all we know is doubt and fear There is only one foundation We believe, we believe In this broken generation When all is dark, You help us see There is only one salvation We believe, we believe Chorus: We believe in God the Father We believe in Jesus Christ We believe in the Holy Spirit And He's given us new life We believe in the crucifixion We believe that He conquered death We believe in the resurrection And He's comin' back again, we believe So, let our faith be more than anthems Greater than the songs we sing And in our weakness and temptations We believe, we believe! Chorus Let the lost be found and the dead be raised! In the here and now, let love invade! Let the church live loud our God we'll say We believe, we believe! And the gates of hell will not prevail! For the power of God, has torn the veil! Now we know Your love will never fail! We believe, we believe! Chorus

We also sing what we believe about God in the songs we sing. The song “We Believe” by the Newsboys is a song that we have used for worship. Take a moment to look at the lyrics printed to the right and be reminded about who God is and what we believe about Him. The next time we say the creed or sing this song may you be reminded about what “You Believe” and that what we believe comes from God’s Word—the Bible.

Thanks for your help!

MIND, BODY, AND SPIRIT “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with

the comfort we ourselves have received from God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

God provides for all our needs. He uses us as instruments to show others the love of Christ. When a loved one is diagnosed with a debilitating illness and imminent death, people use the gifts God has given them to help each other. One of these gifts is hospice care. Hospice care is intensive comfort care that improves quality of life for patients with a limited life expectancy by alleviating pain and suffering. Hospice care addresses a patient’s medical, emotional and spiritual needs. The support that hospice care can provide allows families to share quality time together whether it is at home, in an assisted living center or nursing home, or a hospital. Hospice treats the person, not the disease, with a goal of providing compassionate care to both the patient and family during end-of-life situations.

Hospice of the Red River Valley provides care in all or portions of 29 counties in North Dakota and Minnesota through offices in Fargo, Grand Forks, Valley City, Lisbon and Mayville, N.D., and Crookston, Detroit Lakes and Thief River Falls M.N.

Anyone may call to learn about hospice services but a physician’s order is needed to be admitted to hospice services. Hospice services are provided for anyone who needs them regardless of the ability to pay. Medicare and Medicaid have a hospice benefit as do many private insurance companies. Your primary physician remains your primary care provider and works in conjunction with the hospice team. A hospice team can be made up of a doctor, nurses, nursing assistants, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers.

Hospice care is for anyone whose illness has become end-stage and, who, based on their physician's best judgment, has a life expectancy of six months or less if the illness runs its normal course. This includes illnesses such as cancer, Alzheimer's, heart and liver diseases, AIDS, COPD, and neurological diseases such as ALS and Parkinson's.

Hospice bereavement specialists are available to help deal with the anticipated loss and follow-up grief support for the family. Hospice of the Red River Valley hosts “The Journeys Program” which offers classes and regularly scheduled support groups for those who wish to attend. You may attend a Hospice-sponsored support group, regardless of whether you’ve used our Hospice services. Most are offered at no charge because of funding from individuals, churches, businesses and organizations including the United Way of Cass-Clay.

Grief Journeys for Adults is for adults 18 and older who have experienced a loss through death.

Grief Journeys for Widows is for women who have experienced the death of a partner.

Grief Journeys for Youth is for young people, ages 6-18, who have lost a loved one through death. Adults are encouraged to accompany children.

Transitions Class: Beyond Widowhood is for men and women who wish to address the more practical aspects of widowhood.

Journeying through Grief is an education series designed for individuals wanting to learn more about their own grief process.

Groups are held at the Fargo Hospice of the Red River Valley Office, 1701 38th St. S., Suite 101 Fargo, ND 58103. Phone number 1-800-237-4629. More information can be found on their website www.hrrv.org. Please contact me if you have questions about hospice care.

Angela Wheeler Director, ORCCC

Oct Newsletter Articles Due Sept 17th!

Welcome to our new school year. As teachers we are ready for more routine schedules. During the summer our schedules are not as strict as we have many field trips, park play dates and a little less routine throughout the day. By the time September rolls around not only are our children ready for routine, we as teachers are also. Our preschool is back up and running this year and we are excited to see all the new faces from the community. I love watching the children’s eager faces show up on the first day of school!

Family Fun Night: Was a huge success. Thank you to everyone who came out and enjoyed the evening with us. Also a HUGE thank you to everyone who helped set-up and take down this event. Family Fun Night would not be possible without your help.

Donations: We are looking for ice cream buckets, plastic bags and school supplies (crayons, markers, glue sticks, etc.). Thank you for helping support the CCC.

Prayer: Please pray for God to lift up the right applicants for our staff positions. Pray for our current staff, that all are healthy and continue to desire to work at the CCC. Pray for a smooth transition this fall.

Thank you for your continued support of the CCC.

The Challenge Part 2

Part 2 of The Challenge involves the reading of the whole Bible during the next two years. Sound impossible? It’s not! If you commit to reading God’s Word for just fifteen minutes a day for six days a week, you can read the whole Bible during the next two years. To help you with this and to deepen the application of God’s Word for your life we have two things to help you. First, you can get a subscription to “Today’s Light” magazine. This magazine will help you to go into more depth in each day’s reading. The cost for this magazine that comes out four times a year is $20. Next we will be having a Today’s Light study group that will be meeting on Thursday or Sunday evenings at 7pm. In this group we can learn from one another about what the Holy Spirit has been teaching us from the week’s readings. If you would like to join the class and get the “Today’s Light” magazine, sign up on the Ministry Action Board. The sign up deadline for ordering Today’s Light is Sunday, Sept 27th!

From the CCC Director Angela Wheeler…

Through July of 2015 we are short $ 2746.00 to cover actual expenses. Our average weekly offering is $8,816.26 and average weekly expenses are $9,277.21. All bills are paid to current through August 21st. August has 5 Sundays so the hope is that we can make it through the summer without having to take any money from the L.C.E.F. Budget Support Account. Work begins in September on the Budget for 2016. Boards will receive initial Budget Worksheets for their September meetings. Cindy Sprouls, Business Manager

“Strive for 75” God continues to provide (He always does in His very unique and unexpected ways). We currently are at $28,300 as we strive for $75,000 in our plans and preparations to celebrate the 75 years of God’s Grace that we have received at ORLC. The money has been coming in via a wide variety of ways: memorials, cashing in some stock, the church staff weight loss challenge, special gifts of all sizes. Future plans to add to this fund will be the Oct 3rd “Heaven’s Best Pancake Breakfast” along with a silent auction as well as from the Oct 23rd Turkey Supper. We are 38% of the way to our goal. This month’s Record includes an offering envelope for you to use. As you consider your blessings and as you are able, please respond.

How will these funds be used? $3K for 75th Anniversary plans. $12K for soffit/gutter repairs. $8K for nave/chancel carpet $40K for restrooms remodel $4K to prepare CCC to be a secure wing $10K for elevator update 10% of all gifts for Missions will be as follows (based on reaching the $75K goal.) $3,750 for District Missions $1,875 for our local Campus Ministry $1,875 for our CCC

Gracious & Loving Father, You have created each of us, and have given us this great gift of life. Help us to treasure each moment, the happy ones and the sad ones, the healthy ones and the weak ones. When our lives are running smoothly, help us to turn to You in thanksgiving and praise. When our lives are in turmoil, help us turn to You for comfort and strength. By Your Word, assure us of Your loving presence in our daily lives. Keep us ever mindful of Your loving promise to always be with us. We pray now for these fellow members of Our Redeemer:

Do you scrapbook? Do you make cards? Would you like to do more of either one of these or learn more about them? Join us in the Dining Hall on Friday and Saturday, Sept 18th & 19th for fun, fellowship and/or completed projects. (You are welcome if you need a place to do another craft also). We share tools, ideas, and there’s not a critic in the bunch! If you have any questions, please call Val Cossette at 789-7315.

LWML Circles

An additional LWML circle will be forming in September. The first meeting will be on Tues, Sept 22nd. The first Bible study will be Fountain of Blessings. We invite anyone to check out this opportunity to be in fellowship and study the Word together with women. Becky Schmitz, Sue Helms and Mary Beth Miller will be facilitating at this first meeting.

A word about circles…circles meet monthly for the purpose of growing in our walk with the Lord through Bible study and prayer; women in circles also support the mission grants of the LWML. These are the two main purposes and functions of the LWML (Lutheran Women’s Missionary League). We are women in mission!

Steward Builders A newsletter to help you grow as a steward.

The purpose of this newsletter is to share God’s Word so that our members will better understand who we are to be and what we are to do in the light of the Scriptures. It is our hope that this monthly publication will help you grow in your relationship with the Lord and as a Christian steward. Becoming Workers in the Harvest Jesus knows we are sheep who need a shepherd. He came to be that shepherd, the shepherd who laid down His life for us, His sheep (John 10:11). During His life on earth, He went through out all the cities and villages…Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest” (Matthew 9:35-38). God invites all of us to be His workers in the harvest field. He doesn’t need us, but He gives us the privilege to be involved in this very important work. God has called us and chosen to work through us. What we can offer is our time and our talents. In Christ, we can do work that will be blessed into eternity. We begin this all-important work by asking or praying for a successful harvest with many workers being sent into the harvest field. Because of our prayers, He will provide the workers who are needed. As we pray for God’s work to be accomplished through workers in the field, we are, in essence, allowing Him to make us

the answers to our own prayers. God will find ways to use our gifts in ways that will touch others. We pray for God’s work to be done, and that we ourselves may be involved in doing this work. God gives us strength to overcome the excuses that often plague us such as “I don’t have the time” or “I’m not equipped.” As Apostle Paul wrote, “I can do all things through Him strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). So can we. God Uses Jars of Clay The Apostle Paul refers to himself, the people in Corinth, and us as “jars of clay.” “But we have this treasure in jars of clay…” (2 Corinthians 4:7). While every jar has its weaknesses and flaws, God has chosen to deliver His eternal gifts to this world through such vessels (you and me). He may have to break and remake us from time to time, but use us He will—with our cooperation and obedience. He only requires that we gratefully submit our bodies and wills for His use and consecrate our efforts and energies for His purposes.

Of course, we will have problems. There will be times when we will be clobbered by conflict, even flattened in despair. It is quite possible that we may have to sacrifice status, popularity, even old friends, if we dare to let God have His way with us. Whatever we lose, however, we will regain a “hundred fold” (Matthew 19:29) in this life or in the next. This is the promise of our God. The truth is, we don’t have to be discouraged—not for long. We can even be free from the fear of failure. Only then are we truly free to live or die—to spend and expend our lives joyfully for Jesus’ sake.

Quotes from the Well-known “The deeds you do may be the only sermon some persons will hear today.” (St. Francis of Assisi) “I am ready to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the ordeal of meeting me is another matter.” (Winston Churchill) “I am certain that there will be three surprises in Heaven. First of all, I will see some people there whom I never expected to see. Second, there will be a number whom I expect to be there who will not be there. And, even relying on His mercy, the biggest surprise of all may be that I will be there.” (Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen)

Love One Another Charlie Brown’s young friend Linus made the mistake of confessing to his big sister Lucy that he wanted to be a doctor when he grew up. Lucy was astounded at her brother’s declaration. “You, a doctor! That’s a laugh! You could never be a doctor! You know why? Because you don’t love mankind!”

Young Linus immediately responded, “I do love humankind! It’s people I can’t stand! Linus was expressing a feeling shared by many. However God has called us to love our neighbors as ourselves. We are to lift up others. With God’s help and strength, we can love others. Gifts of Service As students of the Bible, we have heard of Tabitha, aka Dorcas. We read about her in Acts 9:36-42. A miracle happened to her: She had died but was restored to life again through the ministry of Peter. She is introduced to us as one who “was full of good works and acts of charity” (verse 36). Who would think there was anything spectacular about a woman, known only to a small circle of people, who used her gift as a seamstress in service to others? Yet many churches have groups of women who serve others through their gifts and talents and who name themselves after that servant of the Lord, Dorcas. No gift is too small, no talent too inconsequential. God looks at our hearts and honors our gifts of service when they are done out of love and gratitude to Him.

Blessings on your Stewardship Journey!
