SHIPLEY CENTER NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2018
THE CENTER NEWS A MONTHLY PUBLICATION OF SHIPLEY CENTER - JANUARY 2018
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Michael’s Message for January
I sincerely hope your holiday season was one of good times and good memories. I know mine was, with both of our adult children and their families here to celebrate Christmas. Nothing like granddaughters to keep a grandpa busy!
But, now it’s time to get down to business, looking forward to great things in the new year!
Health & Wellness Annex . . . Coming Summer, 2018! As most of you are aware, our big item of business this year is the construction and opening of our Health &
Wellness Annex which will provide much needed space for all our activities and growing membership. Forty–six
years after our founding, we have outgrown the space we currently have.
Our beautiful new 4,640 sq. ft. Health & Wellness building is going to be exciting for YOU to see and
experience. It will be built across the street to meet our current needs and to help us serve more people going
forward, with a focus on Health & Wellness. We hope to have it built and ready for YOU to enjoy by Summer, 2018!
Friendship * Recreation * Education The building will be comprised of two major areas, a demonstration kitchen and a fitness room having more than 75% more space than we have in any room in our current building. In addition to the two large areas under-roof, the Annex will feature a beautiful outdoor patio off the kitchen for fun events and social gatherings. Continued with floor plan and room descriptions on page 5
Save the Date! Join us for our Friends & Fun Event on February 13 at 11:30am.
More information coming in next month’s issue!

Happy New Year! Thank you all for continuing to bring me GREAT ideas for trips! Even our awesome drivers throw new adventures my way. I had better get going on the planning stages. Sometimes there’s just not enough days in the week . . . or hours in the day. One or the other . . . you know what I mean! Our Victoria Holiday trip was fantastic; the weather, the city tour, the Coho trip, and of course the yummy dinner and dazzling lights at Butchart Gardens! I have already had a few people ask about signing up for DECEMBER, 2018! What? Yep, that’s what I said! Let me know if you would like to go next year and I will get you on the roster. (Check out some pictures of this year’s trip on p. 17) I am blown away by the response to our international trips. 20 are going to Iceland in October; and I think there will be 12 going in March to Costa Rica. On our domestic venture, 13 are heading to Branson, Memphis & Nashville in May. (Interested? You can still join the group for that one. Let me know.) The monthly Clearwater Casino trip is still a happening thing, but there must be 24 people. The last few months, we have not had enough to go. This trip is a real bargain, only $10 for members and non-members. Please sign up with Shamya in the front office for that trip. She is such a help, as far as tying up loose ends for me. You might receive a "reminder call" from her the day before a trip. Thanks, Shamya! As we head into these winter months, please remember that, if you are signed up for a trip and it is snowing out, the trip will be canceled. Also, as you leave the bus, look around for your belongings, and if you DO forget something on the bus, don’t hesitate to call me and ask about it. I seem to be running out of room . . . sunglasses, umbrellas, gloves, pillows . . . Duane, can you build me some shelves?
Make 2018 a year of travel to new places!
As always, CALL and RESERVE EARLY!
Beth

Bainbridge Island Art Museum and
Downtown, January 26
In the 3 years I’ve been at Shipley Center, we
have not made this visit; it sounded like a good idea
(thank you, Mary Bell). The Museum features the
contemporary art and craft of many local artists, selected
to engage diverse interests. There is no entrance fee, but
please feel free to make a donation when you arrive.
Bainbridge Island Museum of Art continues to
build their Permanent Art Collection, focusing on “the
art and craft of our region and our time.” The collection
is comprised of donated fine art, primarily from artists
and collections in the Puget Sound region. Examples
include painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture,
ceramics, glass, wood, artists’ books, fiber and jewelry
art. They are collecting slowly and deliberately, with the
goal of building a collection that is diverse and includes
compelling artists at all stages of their careers.
Nestled in the heart of the museum next to the
grand staircase you will find the gift shop. There are
pieces for every price range and age, and 80% of the
items in the Museum Store are made by artists from the
region!
After touring the museum (on your own), we
will check out the shops and cafés in the downtown area
of Bainbridge Island where you can enjoy lunch (on
your own). If there is time on the way home, we might
stop at Central Market, but that is ONLY if everyone on
the bus is on board with that idea!
If you are interested in a box lunch from the
Shipley Café, please let me know when you sign up.
Sandwich, chips, cookie, fruit: available for $8.
Departs 9:00 am, Estimated Return 5:00 pm. $24 Members, $28 Non-Members

Another installment of my wonderful two-month trip to Europe this past fall. This month, I will give you brief tastes of
two memorable sites, Olympia and Pompeii, in two different Mediterranean countries.
Olympia, Greece: Of course, this is where the Ancient Olympic Games
were held, from 777 BC to 393 AD. It was interesting to see the “altar” where every
year’s Olympic torch is lit by rays from the sun igniting wood chips, before it makes
its way around the world! (There’s a back-up plan in case of bad weather: they light
a batch of tinder from the sun a day or two ahead of time to use, “just in case. .. .”) A
picture in the PDN showed this year’s torch-lighting for the 2018 Winter Games in
Pyeongchang, South Korea, lit on October 24. (They had to use the back-up plan!)
The “oval” where the games were held did not have seats for most of the
spectators, just grassy hillsides (don’t know if they were grassy in those days!) There
was a small area of flat stone “seats” for dignitaries. The arch of the tunnel where the
athletes entered the field is still standing, along with some of the tunnel walls.
At that time, only male athletes were allowed, and they competed in the nude! This was for two reasons: 1. To
make sure they actually WERE male, as a woman interloper (gasp!) had been
discovered one year; and, 2. To “level the playing field,” so to speak, with no
distinction between elite and commoner participants.
Cheaters never prosper! Anyone caught cheating had to have
created, at his own expense, a life size “statue of humiliation”, which statues
lined the way to the entry tunnel. Not only was the athlete shamed, but also his
family and his village or town. He often had to move to another town where he
was unknown, to live.
We also drove by the Olympic Stadium built for the first modern
Games in 1896, its marble bleachers seating some 60-thousand spectators.
Pompeii, Italy: It is difficult to adequately convey the awesome site
of Pompeii, its ruins so well preserved since the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. Within 25 hours, the entire city—
as well as the city of Herculaneum—was wiped out, buried under 16 feet of ash covering 200 square miles!
The city itself is HUGE. (Estimates of the population at that time range between 20- and 50-thousand.) Villas,
baths, theatres, temples, brothels, and market areas looked almost as they did then . . . absent their inhabitants. Art was
very important to the people then, and amazing mosaics and
frescos remain on floors and walls, though colors have dimmed
over time.
How do we have images of the people today? The
eruption happened so quickly and was so fierce, residents were
caught off-guard and they were knocked over where they were,
and buried in ash. The ash turned hard, the enclosed bodies
disintegrated; and these
“molds” were filled with
plaster to obtain the original
likeness!
Pompeii provides an intact version of daily life in a Roman society at that
time. Not only treasures were found, but also many objects extremely useful for
understanding everyday life during the years of the Roman Empire. Even today,
archeological teams are at work excavating the site.
Vesuvius last erupted in 1944, killing 26 people, and is considered long
over-due for a major eruption. Always the possibility of an eruption, I would hope
that, with all the advances in monitoring seismic activity of volcanos, there would
be plenty of warning to evacuate ahead of time.

From left to right in the diagram above: The demonstration kitchen will have a full commercial kitchen and plenty of room for learning through lectures, demonstrations and hands-on experiences. What a great opportunity we will have to promote healthy eating and living and have fun too! Imagine a learning environment like our community has never been able to offer before. The central part of the building will have a pantry, storage for fitness equipment, tables, and chairs, 3 unisex ADA-compliant restrooms, and will be the new location of Beth’s Trips and Tours office, to serve you better! Finally we get to the BIGGEST space our organization will have ever had under roof! The 2,448 sq. ft. Fitness Room will have 75% MORE usable floor space than our largest room in our current building. It will hold every current exercise and yoga class we offer, and more! Imagine room for 6 ping pong tables in use at once! It will be a gymnasium with a regulation-sized pickleball court. It will have high ceilings with room to play volleyball and even a small basketball court. Its WIDE OPEN space can be used for social events, concerts, holiday bazaars, fundraisers, and so much more.
Your Help is Needed to Make this a Reality! Our new building will be a steel building, which can be much more affordable to build. Our contractor believes we can keep the cost down to just $80 per square foot! He is donating a portion of his services and we will seek in-kind donations to come in under budget. Many of you received a letter outlining this project in December and many have responded. Thank you so much! If you did not get the letter, or have not had a chance yet, with the busy holidays, to consider a gift, would you like to help out in this new year with our project? Perhaps you can donate $80 for 1 square foot, or $160 for two, $240 for three, or even $800 for TEN sq. feet! Whatever you give will be matched . . . DOUBLED by funds from the R. Leo Shipley Estate! Just come on in or call our office to make your donation. Pledges are also being taken, if you’d like to spread your gift out over time. Thanks for much for your support in building our new Health & Wellness Annex! All the best to you and your family for 2018!
Michael

More than just a Potluck…
At 11:30 am on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of every month, a group of happy members come together to share a meal, enjoy some lively conversation, and learn a little about the day’s sponsor, which happens to be a local business. You can join in the fun, even if you didn’t plan on it. Just toss a couple of dollars in the donation jar! If you come . . . a side dish or dessert is all that is needed, as the main dish is provided by the sponsor. Stay afterward to enjoy a lively bunco game!
BINGO!!! Join us for our Thursday Bingo game and bring a snack to share! Games start at Noon. Be
sure to arrive by 11:45am to ensure you are ready to go by the first game.
Accordion Socials are the second Sunday of odd numbered months from 1-4pm. Often featuring special guests, these are a great opportunity to listen to fantastic music and have a fun time! There will be no January Social so the next social will be on Sunday, March 11th, 1-4pm in the Main Room.

There is never a charge but donations are accepted. We use the dollars primarily for our scholarship students – learning to play fiddle and continuing the tradition of old time music. Coffee and snacks are always available as well as good, old f a s h i o n e d socializing! We look forward to seeing you!
Keep Smiling!
SMILING is infectious; you catch it like the flu.
When someone SMILED at me today, I started SMILING, too. I passed around the corner, and someone saw my grin, When he SMILED, I realized I’d passed it on to him. I thought about that smile, then realized its worth. A single SMILE just like mine could travel ’round the earth. So, if you feel a SMILE begin, don’t leave it undetected . . . Let’s start an epidemic quick . . . and get the world infected!

Free TAX-AIDE service begins in February at Shipley Center
It’s hard to believe the tax season is right around the corner! You may already be one of the 800+ taxpayers who trust their tax return preparation to the AARP TAX-AIDE volunteers at Shipley Center. These IRS-certified volunteers—as we speak—are busy studying the current tax law and taking their required annual IRS Tests--so they’ll be ready to assist you during the upcoming tax season.
The TAX-AIDE program is sponsored by the IRS and the AARP Foundation. You don’t have to be an AARP member to use this FREE tax preparation and e-filing service—you don’t even have to be a senior! The TAX-AIDE volunteers are trained and IRS-certified to prepare most individual tax returns. They do not prepare returns for taxpayers who have income from rental properties, or for taxpayers with complicated business returns. If you think your tax return may be beyond the scope of our program, stop by and check with us . . . our taxpayers are often surprised what we CAN do for them!
Many of our taxpayers come back year after year, and already know the TAX-AIDE routine at the Shipley Center. For those who have not used the AARP TAX-AIDE service, here’s a rundown of what you can expect:
This season, Shipley Center staff will not be making TAX-AIDE appointments, so the service will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The TAX-AIDE volunteers will be available on Wednesdays and Saturdays, from 9am—3pm, during the entire tax season. Since you won’t have an appointment this season, you may want to consider: 1) Bringing a book!, and 2) Consider waiting until March to have your tax return prepared. The first few weeks of February are always crazy-busy . . . your experience may feel less hurried if you can wait until the middle of the tax season to come in.
In order to begin your tax return, the TAX-AIDE volunteers are required to see your Photo ID, and Social Security cards for you, your spouse, and your dependents. Bring your tax return from last year, and all your W-2s, 1099s, and any other documents necessary to complete your 2017 return. AND if you want your refund directly-deposited in your bank account, bring your checkbook or bank document showing the bank account numbers.
When you arrive for your appointment, you’ll be greeted by a TAX-AIDE “Client Facilitator,” who will have you complete a rather lengthy IRS Intake Form. We will be happy to help you if you have any questions or need assistance to complete the form. It IS long—but necessary so our volunteers really understand your household and tax situation, and can make sure you get all the deductions and credits you deserve! Once your Intake Form is completed, you’ll be directed to the next available IRS-certified volunteer to confidentially interview you and complete your tax return. When your tax return is complete, it will be thoroughly quality-reviewed by a second IRS-certified volunteer, to make sure it is complete and accurate. (We’re all about accuracy!) Through all this, YOU are involved. Your completed tax return will be reviewed with you and explained to you.
Once we are confident that your tax return is complete and correct, you will sign a form that authorizes us to e-file your tax return. Your signature confirms that you have provided correct and complete information to us, and that, ultimately, YOU are responsible for the accuracy of your tax return. You leave with a paper copy of your tax return for your records, and we electronically file your tax return. And you’re done with the IRS for another tax year!
So that’s how it’s done. Taxpayers who come to Shipley Center to have their tax returns prepared have told us that, to their surprise, the tax preparation process was actually a pleasant one. We TAX-AIDE volunteers are looking forward to serving you again at Shipley Center!
