Kanga's initial state Kanga's current state includes 2 buildings, a latrine (no longer in use) and agricultural plots on 5 acres of donated land. The school has 200 pupils, 7 cl asses and 4 teachers, in addition to the head teacher, Mr. Abbas, and his deputy, Mr. Joseph. The school is managed by Mr. Abbas, helped by Mr. Joseph and a board of directors consisting of 6 elders. Monthly Report - Kanga Primary School

 July 7, 2008

Introduction

Raising the Village's (RTV) Kanga Primary School (Kanga) project follows RTV's three core

principles: 'Value Creation' in the form of classroom building; 'Sustainability' in the expansion of agricultural cultivation at the Kanga school site, as well business planning and budgeting for the

school and crops; and 'Good Governance' through regular reporting.

Kanga's initial state

Kanga's current state includes 2 buildings, a latrine (no longer in use) and agricultural plots on 5

acres of donated land. The school has 200 pupils, 7 classes and 4 teachers, in addition to the head

teacher, Mr. Abbas, and his deputy, Mr. Joseph. The school is managed by Mr. Abbas, helped by

Mr. Joseph and a board of directors consisting of 6 elders. The next closest school is about 4

kilometers away and involves having the children cross many streams to get there.

The following are some pictures of the existing buildings.

Future plans for Kanga

RTV's current plan is to build 2 classroom blocks and a latrine for Kanga. RTV will also help with

the expansion of the agricultural use of the land, both as a source of income and food for the school.

The construction will take place in phases, beginning with the first 20 x 40 foot classroom block

and the latrine, followed by the second classroom block of the same size. Richard, RTV's

representative in Uganda, is working with Mr. Abbas to think of more ways to increase long-term

revenue for the school from increased agricultural production.

The following is a proposed future state map for Kanga:

Achievements so far

•  The contract between Kanga and RTV has been signed. Contractors for construction and

material suppliers have also been found and prices negotiated.

•  The villagers have cleared and leveled the land for building already and have almost

completed digging the pit for the new latrine. The parents have also been collecting hard

core stones for the building.

•  The beans, maize and tomatoes have already been planted and now get regular weeding. The

students help with the weeding one day a week on their agriculture day in which they're

taught how to care for crops. New land is being cleared and prepared for rice planting,

which should occur in the next week if they get some rain.

Upcoming tasks

•  Construction of the first classroom block and the latrine as soon as sufficient funds have

been received in Uganda to purchase building materials.

• Planting of the rice field as soon as the weather conditions permit.

•  Continued weeding of the planted crops.
