Pastor’s Corner

What is Piety, and do I have it?

Pr. Chad Kyler

No doubt you’ve heard of piety, or of being pious before? Sometimes it is said in a negative way of someone “he’s too pious for his own good.” Or in a positive manner, “she is such a pious woman.” But what exactly is piety? And do you have it?

Christian Piety can be divided into two categories, inward piety and out-ward piety. Inward piety is essentially piety of the soul, the Bible calls this righteousness. Every single Christian from the time of Adam down to our own day has this inward piety. We cannot earn it by our works, we cannot strive to get it, and in fact most times we don’t naturally even want it.

It is God’s righteousness given to us by the Holy Spirit through the Gos-pel. It is the righteousness of faith that is our salvation. We should never confuse this type of piety with our having high-minded emotions, or atti-tudes that are considered “holy” or even a feeling of trust. Although this inward piety will change us in “heart, spirit, mind, and powers” (FC SD IV) it isn’t something that resides in us or in our personal experiences. It is rather God’s gift to undeserving sinners like you and me. It is in this sense that Lutheran Christian’s are pious.

Outward piety on the other hand is piety that is lived out in our daily lives. Another term for outward piety is “good works.” Uh oh screams the little Lutheran on our shoulder…“you said good works! Those are for tent revival preachers, Methodists and Romans Catholics! Good works don’t apply to us because we’re already saved” Well, yes and no. Yes it is true that good works don’t save anyone and they don’t make us good, right-eous, or even Christian. However we must also say no because good works flow naturally from saving faith. Or simply put the outward piety we display comes from the inward piety God gives us through faith. One

of the Lutheran confessions says this of good works “it is God’s will, order, and command that believers should walk in good works,” that the works to be done are “those that God Himself has prescribed and commanded in His Word,” and that these works are done “when a person is reconciled with God through faith and renewed by the Holy Spirit” (Solid Declaration of the Formula of Concord IV)

Lutheran piety then is one of Word and Sacrament. It follows that our piety begins at the Divine Ser-vice wherein we are once baptized and where the Word of Christ is heard and the Body and Blood of Christ are offered weekly. God commands in scripture that those who have been “born again of water and Spirit” (John 3:5) do these good works.

From the Divine Service Lutheran piety flows naturally into the home where we read and teach the Bible and Small Catechism to our families, where we also pray daily reciting the Creed and the Lord’s Prayer, and learn to worship God together. Lutheran piety thanks God daily for the blessing of home, job, clothing and food and it teaches our children to “…fear, love, and trust in God above all things.” This piety at home ultimately leads to piety in the world as we live among and interact with our neigh-bors each and every day. Here we find that the old Lutheran axiom “God doesn’t need your good works, but your neighbor does” holds true. It should also be noted that Lutheran piety expects crosses in life and expects that it will daily sin much (failing to be outwardly pious) and need forgiveness often.

So are you pious? You bet you are! Your piety comes from outside of yourself as a free gift of God through faith. Thus inwardly transformed your faith and outward witness for Christ is strengthened and made firm as you attend the Divine Service receiving God’s Word and His Sacraments weekly which empowers you to act piously in your home and the world around you.

Next month we’ll discuss the wrongheaded and most common view of piety known as “Pietism” and why it should be avoided at all costs!

2019 Mother’s Spaghetti Dinner—Thanks to all!

If you weren’t able to attend the dinner this year you missed an opportunity to watch some of the youth of this congregation at their best! We had a lot of fun and fellowship making meatballs, cooking spaghetti and preparing and serving of the entire meal.

Thanks to all those who attended the 20th Annual Mother’s Day Spaghetti dinner along with a big thanks to all those who helped prepare for the dinner and to cleanup after-wards. (Proceeds to go to the Luther League)

BLOOD MOBILE Gloria Potzler

Do I need to prepare to donate blood?

It is recommended you drink plenty of

water in the days leading up to your

donation. Eating iron-rich food and

getting plenty of rest is also a good

idea. After you've do-nated, you can simply

go about your day,

though it's recom-

mended you avoid

strenuous activity for

24 hours.

Hope to see you at the Bloodmobile.

July 3/September 4/November 6

Tell your friends and family about this and as always we have yummy homemade soup, pies and friendly faces. Even if you can’t give blood consider coming to help.

The food for the month of June is COLD CE-REAL.

Thank you to all of you who placed food at your mailbox for the Mail Carrier’s Food Drive on May 11th. FISH did receive all the food from East Aurora, Elma, and West Falls. It was a very nice, rain free day and we collected a large amount of food. As always, the postal carriers were more than happy to extend their work day and lift many bags of food to help those in need.

Registration is officially open for our 19th Annual Gathering and Conven-tion, a four day event featuring keynote speakers, updates about LCMC, worship, vendors, Bible study, and breakout sessions, plus plenty of oppor-tunities to connect and network with other pastors, leaders, and congrega-tion members throughout our association.

Greg Finke and Grace Johnson will serve as our keynote speakers this year as we "Listen Up!" to God's calling on our lives, His calling on the people around us, and the callings and challenges that we are faced with across generations.

Andrea Paulsen and Jonathan Haseley will preach our opening and closing worship services. Jim Cords will lead prayer and Bible study each morning.

It all takes place September 29 through October 2 at the CHI Health Center Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska.

Flood Relief in Western Iowa and Eastern Nebraska By Mark Vander Tuig - LCMC - April 23, 2019

Record rainfall and record snowfall, all coming together on frozen ground, has made for one of the worst natural disasters to ever hit western Iowa and eastern Nebraska.

Some of the communities became islands, river beds have been changed, roads have been washed out, and thou-sands of tons of sand now cover rich, black farmland. The flood waters are receding but there is much work ahead.

If you have been wondering how you can help, Lutheran Church of the Master (Omaha, NE), Thanksgiving Lutheran Church (Bellevue, NE), Spirit of Peace Church (Valley, NE), and the Heartland District of LCMC are all working to help with flood recovery and providing needed supplies.

If you are interested in contributing, please contact one of these congregations first to find out what they are col-lecting. You can find their contact information here on our website at www.lcmc.net.

Benevolence Ministry Update

The New Birth Evangelical Church and School in Haiti:

We are supporting, along with other churches in the WNY area, the New Birth

Evangelical Church and School in the mountainous area of Haiti. Pastor Reginald

Constant sends photos from time to time of the worshipers and students. There are

200 students currently, grades 1-8, with 9 teachers and a Principal. He has told me,

"Education is the way out of poverty..."

The church also has 200 worshipers, with home services 3 nights a week and

weekly bible study. The continued prayers and support for Pastor Reginald and the

New Birth Church has helped them to continue spreading the message of Christ.

Ministry News

Men’s Ministry The men of Saint Paul’s meet on the second Saturday of every

month at 7 AM, at the Iron Kettle for breakfast, good fellowship

and great discussions. Bring your Bible and join us in a relaxed

atmosphere as breakfast is shared along with God’s Word.

Thank you from the Men’s Ministry of St. Paul’s: Your Men’s Ministry from St. Paul’s would like to give out a big THANK YOU to all who took the time to cook and bake for the fifth annual Jake Stahl Me-morial. By utilizing your God given time and talents you helped us in making this event an-other success. A special thank you also goes out to all who did the running around, organiz-ing, setting up, manning the grills, and cleaning up. I believe that all had a good time of food, fellowship, and trap shooting (other than I am certain, a few unwanted sore shoulders come Sunday morning). We also had a chance to fellowship with a couple of our Brothers in Christ from Barefoot Christian Community in Niagara Falls a few other new faces. We would also like to once again, thank the West Falls Conservation Society, (especially club members Rich and Mark who have been help out every year) for graciously opening their doors and giving us this opportunity. We hope to see you all there again next year!

Have You Made God Smile Today? Pray for a Child!

We live by faith and not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7 Have you exercised your faith lately? Has God helped you to exer-cise your faith lately? I love to look words up to get the full meaning. Here is what I found online:

exercise - noun, bodily or mental exertion, especially for the sake of training or improve-ment of health exercised - verb, to put (faculties, rights, etc.) into action, practice, or use: to exercise free-dom of speech. to use or display in one's action or procedure: to exercise judgment.

I believe that our faith needs exertion to improve not just our spiritual health, but our health at large. God wants us to practice, improve, use and wield our faith for our own good and the good of His people. At St. Paul's Sunday School, we are blessed to have all ages in classes, exercising thier faith! Prayer is a great way to exercise our faith. I pray that you are praying at home with your children. Prayer can be a simple conversation with our Lord... Heavenly Father, thank you for the sunshine today so that we can go to soccar practice. Dear Jesus, thank you for a great day at school and for being with me during the spelling test. Dear Lord, I am worried about my friend, please be with him/her. It is a precious right and freedom we have to be able to exercise our faith through worship and prayer. Please pray with me now as I pray for all of God's children: Holy God, please help us to exercise our faith. In every moment of every day, help us turn to You and seek Your will. Help us to pray without ceasing and to teach oth-ers to pray. Give us the courage to wield our faith for our good and the good of oth-ers. Thank you for Your Word in the Bible, for our church family and for all our chil-dren. We especially pray for Teegan Stoddart and Thomas Stynes, two of our own chil-dren from St. Paul's who have enlisted to fight for our freedoms and who exer-cise thier faith through this act. God bless and protect them and all the coura-geous people who protect our freedom to worship You! We ask this in the name of Jesus, our Savior and Lord. Amen. This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything ac-cording to his will, he hears us. 1 John 5:14

Deacons Meeting Minutes May 18, 2019 In attendance: Barb Rotino, Liz Stewart, Mary Barkey, and Pastor Chad

Or mission statement: St. Paul’s Deacon’s have been called into service to help meet the caring needs of God’s children both within our congregation and within our community. We see this service as the rent we pay for being, our very purpose in this life, and not some-thing that we do in our spare time; it is our way of life.

Pastor Chad opened with a prayer at 10:00 AM

Pastor Chad shared a lesson on PRAYER. The focus of the Gospel is Jesus praying and teach-ing. Jesus is always praying. The miracles that He performed came in between the praying. Jesus raised the dead. He fed thousands with a few loaves and fishes. He cast out demons, and His Apostles never asked Him “Lord teach us to raise the dead,” or “Lord teach us to cast out demons.” Jesus’ Apostles asked Him “Lord teach us how to pray.”

Pastor Chad mentioned Luther’s booklet, THE WAT TO PRAY, which can be downloaded free. It explains how the focus of the Gospel is Jesus praying and teaching, and that we, today have the same concerns that Jesus’ disciples had back then. Luther tells us that “the Lord’s Prayer is all we need.” First say the Lord’s Prayer, then repeat each petition one at a time: e.g. “thy will be done,” then insert your own petition, e.g. “my spouse is ill, help us.” It is the power of prayer that leads to the Divine Service, to the Body and Blood of Christ, then into the family and home. And Satan’s attacks are on the family and home, where he can destroy faith. But the POWER of Prayer STOPS him.

Time to Pray JESUS is a life-line for a tired soul, an exhausted mind, and a broken

heart. Call out to Him in prayer.

Those with health concerns: Our Savior and healer we ask that you would touch those in need of

healing; give them at all times comfort and peace, and help them to accept your perfect will no matter

what the outcome may be. We pray for the following: Thelma, Ron, Denise, Mike, Christy, Kay, Jim,

Brenda, Joanne, Cathy, Liz, Colin, Mary Jean, Betty Alice, Marie, Lynn, Bob, Bonnie, Sandy, Roger, Ed,

Maria, and others … AMEN!

Our Homebound Members: Ever-present Lord, you have promised never to leave us nor forsake us

but to abide with us to the end of time. Grant those who are homebound the comfort of your presence.

May your grant them today an encouraging visitor or phone call. Give to them strength in prayer, know-

ing that their prayers for our congregation are a powerful and effective work. May your Word fill them

with faith and hope. Specifically we pray for: Vi Cornwell, Arlene Koch, Alan Dietz, Diane Hawk, and

Colin Stewart.

Those in the midst of life’s trials and tribulations: Heavenly Father, the dark shadow of this

fallen would cause us to experience many difficulties in this life. Yet we are filled with hope and find our

strength in your one and only Son, Jesus Christ who overcome the world through his death and resurrec-

tion. Help those who are facing trials with the hope of the cross and resurrection. We pray for: Strug-

gling couples, the unemployed, those dealing with mental illness, the incarcerated, many who struggle

with addiction, those who grieve the loss of a loved one, families working through the hurt of divorce,

those who suffer relentless physical pain…

Our Country and World: Lord, keep this nation under your care. Bless the leaders of our land that

we may be a people at peace among ourselves and a blessing to other nations of the earth. Grant that we

may choose trustworthy leaders, contribute to wise decisions for the general welfare, and serve You

faithfully in our generation; through Jesus Christ. AMEN!

Those serving in the armed forces: Lord God of hosts, stretch forth your almighty arm to

strengthen and protect those who serve in the armed forces of our country. Support them in times of

war, and in times of peace keep them from all evil, giving them courage and loyalty. Grant that in all

things they may serve with integrity and with honor, through Jesus Christ. Specifically we pray for: An-

drea Solomon, Douglass Ziemer, Daniel Potzler, Brad Hedgecorth, Thomas Stynes… (if your family

member has been omitted please contact the church office.)

Our Evangelistic Work: Increase, O God, the faith and the zeal of all your people, that they may

more diligently seek the salvation of their neighbors, through the message of your love in Jesus Christ

our Lord. Send forth a mighty call unto all your servants, granting unto them hearts of love, sincerity of

speech, and power from the Holy Spirit, that they may be able speak the gospel so that many forsake sin

and return unto you. And so bless and favor the work of your people, that multitudes may be brought

from the bondage of evil into the kingdom of your dear Son; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.
