Units of measurementExcept where noted, temperature is given in degrees Celsius (°C), rainfall in millimetres (mm), and wind speed in kilometresper hour (km/h).

Observation times and periodsEach station in Australia makes its main observation for the day at 9 am local time. At this time, the precipitation over the past24 hours is determined, and maximum and minimum thermometers are also read and reset. In this publication, the followingconventions are used for assigning dates to the observations made:Maximum temperatures are for the 24 hours from 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the afternoon of thatday.Minimum temperatures are for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the early morning of thatday.Mean temperatures are the average of the daily maximum and daily minimum temperatures.Daily rainfall is for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. This means a significant fraction of the rain may haveoccurred on the previous calendar day.Monthly rainfall is for the period from 9 am on the last day of the previous month to 9 am on the last day of this month.Maximum daily wind gusts are in the 24 hours from midnight to midnight.

Climatological valuesThe climatological averages shown in the text and tables are generally long-term means based on observations from the years1961–1990. They are not shown for sites with less than 25 years of record in that time, as they cannot then be calculatedreliably. Climatological extremes are generally taken from all available years of record; the number of years can vary markedlyfrom site to site.

RecordsThe tables of records are not exhaustive, as they only show sites with at least 30 years of record. This may exclude locationswhere a new site has been established; this means even some major cities and towns may not be listed.

MapsThe temperature and rainfall maps are intended to give an overview of the country. There could be discrepancies between thevalues shown on these maps and those at individual locations, as a result of the way the maps are generated. A wide range ofmaps of rainfall, temperature and other variables, covering the whole country and smaller regions can be found atwww.bom.gov.au/climate/maps.

Accessing dataTables of daily values for selected sites are included toward the back of the Monthly Weather Review. Data from many moresites and for other times are available from www.bom.gov.au/climate/data/.

Overview

• Australia's second-warmest February for bothmaximum and mean temperatures

• national minimum temperatures also aboveaverage (fifth-warmest on record)

• generally below-average rainfall (especially innorthern Australia, South Australia and Tasmania)

• two tropical cyclones: Lam and Marcia

February was a warm month for Australia as a whole, and for most areas of the country. Averagednationally, maximum temperatures were the second-warmest on record for February (2.35 °C aboveaverage) and minimum temperatures were the fifth-warmest for February (1.00 °C above average).

While two tropical cyclones, Marcia and Lam, broughtheavy rainfall to parts of the east coast and across theTop End during the second half of the month, and

heavy falls were recorded on the eastern coast of theCape York Peninsula earlier in the month, only smallareas recorded above-average monthly rainfall.

Rainfall was 51% below average nationally, with allStates and the Northern Territory observing area-averaged totals below the long-term mean. Februaryrainfall was below average for large parts of northernAustralia, inland northeastern New South Wales, much of South Australia and adjacent border regionsof New South Wales and Victoria, and for most ofTasmania. Some areas of coastal southeasternQueensland and northeastern New South Wales andparts of Western Australia on the central west coastand southeast coast recorded above-average rainfallfor the month.

Significant weather

Tropical cyclones

Tropical cyclone Lam formed early on the morning of17th in the Gulf of Carpentaria, bringing heavy rainfallto parts of Arnhem Land, in the Northern Territory, and the Cape York Peninsula, in Queensland. Heavyfalls continued in Arnhem Land as tropical cycloneLam crossed the coast of the Top End in the NorthernTerritory early on the morning of the 20th.

Another low pressure system located on themonsoon trough over the Coral Sea deepened, anddeveloped into tropical cyclone Marcia on the eveningof the 18th, with light to moderate rainfall recordedfrom Mackay, on Queensland's central coast, down toTaree, on the New South Wales mid-north coast asMarcia tracked southwest towards the Capricorncoast. Areas of heavy rainfall continued along the eastcoast and in adjacent inland districts south of StLawrence in Queensland to around Lismore in NewSouth Wales as the cyclone made landfall early on themorning of the 20th.

It was the first time in recorded history that twotropical cyclones have made landfall in Australia onthe same day. Summaries have been prepared fortropical cyclone Lam and tropical cyclone Marcia, andare available on the Bureau of Meteorology's SevereWeather Events web page.

Fire weather

In South Australia, February was the hottest anddriest month of the 2014–15 fire weather season thusfar. Across the State, the average mean maximumtemperature was the second-highest on record, andrainfall was 87% below average, making it the driestFebruary since 2009. The hot, dry weathercontributed to a busy fire weather month with 71events over 11 days where fire danger reached atleast severe in individual districts, compared to 40events on 8 days in January. All but four of the 71events were in the severe category. There were fivesignificant fire-weather days, when fire dangerreached at least severe in 7 or more districts:occurring on the 7th, 11th, 14th, 15th and 28th.Despite the high fire danger there were no significantfires.

Persistent heat

February's overall story was one of persistentmoderate warmth and an absence of cold days, ratherthan one of extremely warm days.

There were three consecutive days (the 8th to the10th) when the Australian area-averaged maximumtemperature exceeded 38 °C. This was only the

second time that this has occurred during Februarysince comparable records commenced in 1910, withthe previous run of similar days occurring from the14th to the 16th in 1983; February 1983 wasAustralia's warmest on record.

Strong winds

Strong winds in the Corowa region in New SouthWales on the 11th downed trees, caused roofdamage, and fanned grass fires sparked by lightningstrikes.

An isolated thunderstorm generated a 144 km/h gustat Kununurra airport in Western Australia on the 12thand caused damage to three aircraft and thirteen cars. One large uprooted tree destroyed a utility truck, narrowly missing a child inside. A small tornado onthe 16th damaged vines and an equipment shed at avineyard in Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley in NewSouth Wales. Thunderstorms also caused strongwinds in the Griffith region, with a 91 km/h wind gustreported.

Thunderstorms and heavy rain

In Western Australia, thunderstorms produced hailand wind damage in the Central West and LowerWest on the 1st and 2nd. Large hail was observed inGeraldton, Ballajura, Malaga and Connell, and about26 000 premises lost power in Perth and Geraldton.

Thunderstorms north of Nabiac in New South Walesproduced hail of up to 2 cm in diameter on the 1st,with 40 mm of rain in 20 minutes. On the 1st and2nd, very heavy rain caused flash flooding in the CoffsHarbour region, with a 48-hour rainfall total to 9 am onthe 3rd of 221.4 mm.

On the 8th heavy rain fell in the early hours of themorning on the north tropical coast of Queensland, with the heaviest rain falling between 5 am and 8 amin the Malanda and Glen Allyn areas.

Thunderstorms were also recorded in southeast NewSouth Wales and eastern Victoria on 17 February.McKillop Bridge in the Snowy River National Parkrecorded 22 mm between 3 pm and 4 pm and100 mm between 4 pm and 5 pm. A significant stormcell remained almost stationary north of Orbost andeast of Omeo as most cells moved towards thesoutheast between 3.36 pm and 4:48 pm.

Over the 19th and 20th heavy rain fell on the northcoast of New South Wales ahead of ex-tropicalcyclone Marcia. The highest 48-hour rainfall total to9 am on the 21st was 231 mm at Boat Harbour. Windgusts at Byron Bay reached 105 km/h on the 20th and91 km/h on the 21st.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms occurred in Melbourneon 22 and 23 February, with severe storms inShepparton on the 23rd. The State EmergencyService (SES) received about 50 calls for help acrossthe State, mostly for fallen trees and minor damage.

Thunderstorms and associated strong windsdeveloped on the 25th in central New South Wales, causing a gust of 109 km/h at Coonamble, as well as28 mm of rain in 20 minutes at Orange. AtComboyne, 60 mm of rain fell in one hour, 3 cm hailwas reported, several trees were felled. The wind andrain contributed to flash flooding and minor roofdamage, as well as one flood rescue of trapped cattle, with minor to moderate flooding along the Wilsons,Brunswick and Tweed rivers.

Thunderstorms developed along a surface trough inthe Great Southern and Goldfields districts ofWestern Australia on the 26th with minor damagereported in Kalgoorlie and Kambalda.

Severe storms developed in Melbourne and theeastern suburbs on the evening of 28 February.Power outages affected 37 000 premises across theregion and the SES received around 1700 calls. Windsgusting at up to 130 km/h swept across the city, bringing down trees and powerlines, smashingwindows and taking roofs off houses. A large tree fellonto a family home in the Dandenong Ranges, killinga two-year-old child and seriously injuring a five-yearold.

Synoptic summary

During the first week of February weather acrossAustralia was dominated by a trough of low pressureextending across the tropical north and a highpressure centre located to the south of the GreatAustralian Bight. The start of the month also sawsevere tropical cyclone Ola deepen over the CoralSea, before weakening as it tracked south into theTasman Sea on the 4th.

A sequence of low pressure troughs crossing thesouthern half of the continent directed warm airacross the southeast mainland and into Tasmaniafrom the 7th through to the 13th. A prefrontal troughassociated with a low pressure system located in theSouthern Ocean crossed the southern mainland andTasmania between the 14th and 16th.

On the 17th, tropical cyclone Lam formed in the Gulfof Carpentaria, bringing heavy rainfall to parts ofArnhem Land in the Northern Territory and the Cape

York Peninsula in Queensland. With the strengtheningmonsoon trough extending from the far north of theGulf of Carpentaria into the northwestern Coral Sea,another deepening low pressure system developedinto tropical cyclone Marcia on the 18th and thentracked towards the central coast of Queensland. Both tropical cyclones Lam and Marcia made landfallon the 20th, with areas of heavy rain and very strongwinds continuing through to the 22nd across areas ofthe Top End of the Northern Territory and the centralQueensland coast.

The last week of February saw a ridge of highpressure weaken as it transitioned from the GreatAustralian Bight into the Tasman Sea while a lowpressure trough persisted across the north andthrough the interior of Queensland and New SouthWales, extending along the western coast of WesternAustralia behind the high.

Temperatures

February was the second-warmest on record forAustralian mean temperatures, with a nationalanomaly of +1.67 °C, behind the 1983 record of+1.93 °C. Much of the country had temperatures inthe warmest 10% of years, with Western Australiaalso observing its second-warmest February on record(+2.30 °C), and large areas of inland Western Australiaobserving monthly temperatures more than 3 °Cabove average. Queensland (+1.23 °C), SouthAustralia (+2.18 °C), and Victoria (+1.66 °C) allobserved mean temperatures in the warmest tenyears on record.

Mean temperatures were near-average along the eastcoast, in central and northern parts of the NorthernTerritory, and in southern and western Tasmania.Southeast Queensland and northeast New SouthWales were the only regions to record slightly below-average temperatures, associated with above-averagerainfall.

The above-average temperatures were associatedwith well-below-average rainfall during the month anda lack of monsoon activity in northern Australia. Bothmaximum (+2.35 °C) and minimum (+1.00 °C)temperatures were in the five warmest years onrecord, as were Australian-region sea surfacetemperatures (+0.81 °C). While few daily temperaturerecords were broken during the month, there wereseveral periods of well-above-average temperatures,as well as a lack of major cool events during themonth.

Maximum temperatures

The Australian mean maximum temperature forFebruary was 2.35 °C above average, the second-warmest February on record (behind 1983). Maximumtemperatures were also the second-warmest onrecord for South Australia (+3.13 °C) and WesternAustralia (+3.05 °C), and the eighth-warmest onrecord for Queensland (+1.75 °C) and Victoria(+1.98 °C).

Anomalies of mean daily maximumtemperature in February 2015

Decile rank of mean daily maximumtemperature in February 2015

Maximum temperatures were in the warmest 10% ofyears across the majority of Western Australia andSouth Australia, in northwestern Victoria, much ofwestern New South Wales and inland Queensland, and in parts of the southeast and southwest NorthernTerritory. Most of the remaining regions of Australiarecorded above-average maxima, with the exceptionof close to average temperatures in a region of thecentral Northern Territory and adjacent southernKimberley, the far northern tip of Cape York, and abroad strip running along the east coast from aroundMackay in Queensland to East Gippsland in Victoria, with below-average maxima in a small region of thenorthern New South Wales coast.

A low off the coast and associated southerlies causedcool days in the southeast at the start of the month, with slightly below-average temperatures continuingas a strong high pressure system developed in theBight. This directed very warm northerlies intosouthwest Western Australia, with warm conditionsshifting into southeast Australia by the 6th as the highmoved eastward.

Warm temperatures persisted across much of centraland southern Australia during the following week, with localised records (see page 14) in part of

Western Australia on the 9th and 10th and maximamore than 12 °C above average in southern SouthAustralia on the 14th. Temperatures returned tonormal across the country over the 16th and 17th.

Tropical cyclones Lam and Marcia caused localisedcool conditions as they made landfall over the 19th to21st, particularly in the central Northern Territory, while warm temperatures persisted in northwestWestern Australia. A surface trough and northerliesalso caused warm days in southeast Australia overthe 21st and 22nd, with very warm days in southwestWestern Australia on the 24th. The month ended witha final pulse of warm weather moving eastwardthrough southern Australia between the 25th and28th.

Minimum temperatures

The mean minimum temperature for February was1.00 °C above average, the fifth-warmest February onrecord and the warmest since 2007. With theexception of the Northern Territory, where thetemperature anomaly was zero, all States recordedabove-average minima during February, although onlyWestern Australia (+1.54 °C, second-warmest) rankedamongst the ten warmest years on record.

Minima were generally above average in southernAustralia, with minima in the warmest 10% of yearsin most of Western Australia outside the Kimberley,as well as in parts of northern South Australia, western Queensland, and localised areas of southernVictoria and northern New South Wales. Minima wereaverage to below average across much of theNorthern Territory and the Kimberley region ofWestern Australia, southeast Queensland andnortheast New South Wales, as well as in parts of theCape York Peninsula and eastern South Australia.

The month started with cool nights in parts ofsoutheastern Australia, with cool anomalies movingnorthward and westward over subsequent days.Large parts of the central Northern Territory recordedminima more than 6 °C below average on the 4th,with some daily records broken (see page 14),followed by a record cold night at Warmun in theKimberley on the 5th.

Nights warmed from the 6th, with large parts ofWestern Australia recording minima more than 6 °Cabove average over the 9th and 10th, extending intomuch of southern South Australia on the 14th. A coldfront crossed southern Australia on the 14th, bringingcooler nights to southwestern Western Australiawhile pushing warm anomalies eastward intosoutheast Australia.

Warm anomalies redeveloped in central WesternAustralia from the 17th, with localised records on the20th and 21st including a minimum of 35.1 °C atWittenoom. A surface trough also brought very warmnights to parts of southeast Australia on the 22nd and23rd, before cool nights developed in South Australiaassociated with a high pressure system on the 25th.The month ended with close to average minimaacross the country.

Rainfall

February rainfall was below average for large parts ofnorthern Australia, inland northeastern New SouthWales, much of South Australia and adjacent borderregions of New South Wales and Victoria, and formost of Tasmania. Some areas of coastalsoutheastern Queensland and northeastern NewSouth Wales, and parts of the west coast of WesternAustralia recorded above-average rainfall for themonth. Rainfall was 51% below average nationally. AllStates and the Northern Territory recorded area-averaged totals below the long-term mean.

Total rainfall in February 2015

Decile rank of total rainfall in February 2015

February rainfall was below average for the Kimberleyand adjacent parts of inland Western Australia, acrosslarge parts of the Northern Territory, most ofQueensland except the east coast and parts of thesouth, a large part of inland northeastern New SouthWales, much of South Australia extending into borderregions of Victoria and southwestern New SouthWales, and also across most of Tasmania except theeast coast. February rainfall was in the lowest 10% ofhistorical observations for large areas of inlandnorthern and central Queensland, the western TopEnd and Kimberley, nearly all of western Tasmaniaand smaller areas in the other regions with below-average rainfall.

At the beginning of the month a strong high pressuresystem was present over the Great Australian Bight,

directing an easterly airstream into New South Wales, causing several days of heavy falls on the northernNew South Wales coast.

During the first week, a low pressure trough along thewest coast of Western Australia, extending from themonsoon trough across the tropical north, broughtfrequent thunderstorms and showers between thenorth and southwest of Western Australia, producingmoderate falls in parts of the Kimberley, Gascoyneand southwest coast of Western Australia.Thunderstorms and showers were also observedacross the Top End of the Northern Territory, theCape York Peninsula and central and southernQueensland.

On the 3rd and 4th thunderstorms formed about thePilbara coast due to a nearby low pressure system, with moderate falls recorded east of Karratha. Thepassage of a weak cold front to the south of thecontinent brought light rainfall to coastal southwestTasmania.

By the 8th, a surface trough extended throughwestern New South Wales and Queensland into theNorthern Territory, generating showers andthunderstorms with light to moderate falls recordedalong the north tropical Queensland coast, parts ofthe Gulf Country and in the Darwin–Daly district in theNorthern Territory. A moist, onshore flow resulted inlight falls for coastal New South Wales. A highpressure system located in the Tasman Sea on the10th directed easterly winds across the easternStates, resulting in moderate totals for the far northtropical coast and adjacent inland districts ofQueensland.

A surface trough extending across South Australia onthe 11th generated isolated thunderstorm activity, bringing moderate totals to the Northeast Pastoraldistrict in South Australia. As the trough movedeastwards, light rainfall was recorded in westernVictoria.

On the 12th and subsequent days a surface andmiddle level trough produced tropical convection overthe Top End of the Northern Territory, Cape YorkPeninsula and the Gulf of Carpentaria, resulting inmoderate rainfall across much of far northernAustralia. A moist, onshore flow brought light rain toparts of the southeastern Queensland andnortheastern New South Wales, with higher fallsreceived in coastal areas.

Moderate rainfall was recorded in southern andnortheastern Victoria and southeastern New SouthWales around mid-month, associated with a weak

trough crossing the southeast north of a persistenthigh over the Tasman Sea.

On the 16th, a low pressure trough associated with acold front extended from South Australia intosouthern New South Wales, producing moderaterainfall over a large area of Victoria, northernTasmania, and parts southeastern New South Walesand the front passed through Tasmania.

Meanwhile, a weak low pressure centre in themonsoon trough was located near the Cape YorkPeninsula, triggering thunderstorms across thetropical north and moderate to heavy rainfall acrossparts of far northern Queensland and the northtropical coast, areas of Arnhem Land in the NorthernTerritory, and in Western Australia's Kimberley. Raincontinued as the low deepened and the monsoontrough strengthened, with tropical cyclone Lamforming early on the morning of 17th in the Gulf ofCarpentaria.

The following day, a surface trough extending frominland western Queensland, through New SouthWales and central Victoria triggered thunderstormsand showers, producing moderate totals for parts ofeastern Victoria and central New South Wales, withlight rainfall for southwest Queensland. A moist, onshore flow brought light showers to the coast ofsoutheast Queensland and northern New SouthWales.

Another low pressure system located on themonsoon trough over the Coral Sea deepened, developing into tropical cyclone Marcia on the eveningof the 18th. As Marcia tracked southwest towards theCapricorn coast light to moderate rainfall wasrecorded from Mackay, on Queensland's centralcoast, down to Taree, on the New South Wales mid-north coast.

Heavy rain continued in Arnhem Land as tropicalcyclone Lam crossed the coast in the Top End, whilemoderate falls were observed across parts of theKimberley in Western Australia. Areas of heavy raincontinued in the Top End and along the east coastfrom St Lawrence in Queensland to around Lismore inNew South Wales as both tropical cyclones Lam and

Marcia made landfall early on the morning of the 20th.A number of sites in Queensland's Wide Bay andBurnett region set daily rainfall records for February(see page 16) in the 24-hours to 9 am on the 21st.

Thunderstorms formed along a surface troughsituated through Queensland's interior producing lightto moderate rain over southern inland Queenslandand areas of northwest and central New South Waleson the 22nd. A northwest monsoonal airflow broughtmoderate falls to parts of northern Western Australia, the Top End, and western Northern Territory duringthe 24th while a moist and unstable airmass extendedover the northern half of Queensland, with much ofnortheastern Queensland receiving light or moderaterain.

On the 22nd a pre-frontal trough extended from a lowpressure system in central Western Australia throughSouth Australia, western Victoria and alongTasmania's west coast, with the cold front and troughcrossing central Tasmania and Victoria late on the23rd. Light falls were recorded in parts of southeastSouth Australia, with moderate rainfall in westernTasmania, parts of southern and eastern Victoria, andsoutheastern New South Wales as thunderstormsformed along the trough.

At the end of the month surface troughs locatedthrough western and eastern Australia and across theinterior of the Northern Territory generated stormsand showers, producing light to moderate rainfallalong the northwest coast, in central and southernWestern Australia, across the Top End, and in parts ofnorthern Queensland. Part of the trough trackedeastwards across New South Wales, bringing light tomoderate falls to eastern and central New SouthWales and southeastern Queensland.

By the 28th, a developing cold front and a deepeninglow pressure system to the south of South Australiatracked eastwards and strengthened before crossingVictoria and Tasmania. Light rainfall was recordedacross large parts of Victoria and Tasmania, withisolated areas east of Melbourne and in southwestTasmania recording heavier falls.
