President’s Report

On Field I was really happy with our year on and off field this season. On field it was great to see 4 senior sides play finals with 2 just missing out. And two sides making the Grand Final was a great achievement especially the young and inexperienced 5ths. Some better umpiring in that game and they more than likely would have won that flag. To see a couple of 1st year 16s Taylour Samuel making his 2nd 11 debut and Mitch Felstead making his 1st 11 debut was great for the club and as 16s coach I was very proud. Having a 6s team again was great for the club and I thought Jason did a fantastic job Bringing that group together. Having filled in late in the season the encouragement they show each other and the spirit in the field was a real credit to the entire group and willingness to get back to the club for awards was easily the best supported team out of the 6. Juniors The junior club became one of the biggest in the competition and will continue to grow. I don’t think going in to last season any of us were prepared for the influx in players last season and it was a credit to Simone and Dean how smoothly it was handled and run. With more time to prepare this season we will be bigger and stronger and I am looking forward to getting the junior trials and team selections under way ASAP. It looks as though we will have two under 16s this season which I am really excited about. Not having a 16s two seasons ago to having two this season is fantastic for the club. Off Field Off field we had a fair bit going on. The redevelopment of the nets was a lot of hard work and hard labour to get them to the useable state that we have them in. The new honour boards finally went up and it was pretty hard work tracing all the info with still plenty of info to gather. Thank you Firstly to Kenny Hayhurst - he just got in over the last 4 or 5 years and did whatever was needed without any fuss or drama. Peter Bromiley - he really improved the often fractured relationship between club and RDCA with his superb administration work behind the scenes. Dean and Simone Samuel - the work they do, not just with the juniors, but the entire club including vets I thank you for all you support and hard work.

Montrose Cricket Club Annual Report 2013/14

Future I am not walking away from the club, just the presidency. I am really looking forward to getting more involved with the junior club and in particular junior development. I have already committed to coaching the 16s and I am really striving to get a realistic goal of making our junior development programme the biggest and the envy of the entire competition within three years and with a bit of hard work I think this is very achievable Closing In closing, as this is it for me as President, it’s been a big three years as President and two years on committee before that. I think I have grown into the roll and certainly tried my best to make this club the best it can be. Unfortunately you can’t please everyone but I think in a whole the club is a stronger bigger better place than when I took over and I would like to think as President I got stuff done. Three years ago a lot of people forget I was voted in and accepted reluctantly purely because I was the last bloke to leave on a Thursday and Saturday night. Now I am still that bloke but matured a hell of a lot and after year one I surrounded myself with some awesome people that made my life so much easier and helped improve the club. There’s no way I or the club would have survived without their hours and hours of hard work and dedication. Mark Hayhurst President

Treasurer’s Report

MCC FINANCIALS 2012-13

Summary

Gross inflows $144,193

Outflows $147,539

Net Inflows -$3,346

Current Balance $8,813

Key Notes Inflows were up $14k on 2012 / 13 influenced by an increase in club sponsorship via a Cricket Victoria Grant of $3.7k, additional functions, canteen sales and an increase in junior and senior playing numbers. Although outflows increased by $13k, variable expenses were constant on those spent in 2012 / 13. The increase was due to $14k being spent on asset purchases and upgrades. Throughout the year, $9k was spent on upgrading the nets, $3k on the honour boards and $2k on the club room flooring. It is envisaged that an electricity bill of $2 -$3k will received within the next month however there is also an ATO bas return of $3k outstanding. Any expenses before next seasons start will therefore net themselves out. Areas for improvement and committee role recommendations (funding sources and cost savings):

Increases to sponsorship – A committee member to take role of sponsorship and relationship mgr

Bar staff – adopt a roster system for bar duties (Thursday and Saturday nights) eliminating staff costs

Player subs and uniform sales – Committee member to manage and administer this ongoing issue

Montrose Cricket Club Annual Report 2013/14

Secretary’s Report As secretary of the Montrose Cricket Club I would like to thank the executive committee and general committee for their support. Also during the season again I thank the guidance and support from Brett Mc Kane and Gregor Mason (RDCA Secretary) which enabled me to fulfil my role as secretary. The MCC fielded six senior teams and six junior teams and Milo cricket for the season 2013/14. Daniel Carratelli was reappointed club coach for 2013/14. Daniels enthusiasm, commitment and organisation skills enabled the MCC to continue the improvement with the four senior grades playing finals. I would like to thank Simone Samuel (Junior Coordinator), all the junior coaches and team managers for their efforts this season - Your support of our junior players has been fantastic. Also a special thanks to Steve Clarke (Veterans Coordinator) for organisation of our Veterans this year. Again a special thanks to James Gibson and Josh Crowe for preparing and tallying the votes for the Barry Wellington Medal. To Murray Thomas for the updating of the MCC website. RDCA The MCC relationship with the RDCA continued to strengthen this year with our club again being one of three nominated for the best run club in the competition. Even though we did receive the overall award the efforts from all in the club should be congratulated. This nomination is judged on, but not limited to, the club’s response to information requested, accounts settlement, Captains umpire reports (1st and 2nds only) and the entering of scores onto MyCricket for both senior and junior matches. In addition I would like to thank the all club captains for the way the score books were kept and the efforts made to have all runs, catches wickets as accurate as they could be. RDCA Award Winners Our club also had several RDCA individual awards winners. MCC wishes to congratulate these players on receiving their award. The RDCA award winners were: Bryce Edwards – RDCA Steve Pascoe Shield Medal player of the year and batting average winner. Scott O’Neil - RDCA B grade (Ian Spencer Shield) batting average. Ashley Storm - RDCA D grade (Don Smith Shield) batting average. Garry Mangnall – RDCA J grade (Timothy Court Shield) batting average. Representative Teams The MCC also had players represent the RDCA in interleague and carnival games these being: Joshua Bromiley and Cheyne Van Koll – RDCA under 21’s, Ethan Alderman U12’s Yarra Valley, Braden Harvey U12’s RDCA, Taylour Samuel and Mitch Felstead – RDCA Mitchell Shield U16’s. and Rod Sutherland, Cameron Way and Peter Bromiley – RDCA Veterans over 40’s. The MCC congratulate these players on their selection and performances.

MCC and Council This season saw our 3rds, 4ths and junior teams use the resurfaced Keith Hume No. 1. This was greatly appreciated by all and also created some big team scores during the season. During the 2013/14 season our 5 ths and 6th ground (Keith Hume No. 2) that is shared with the Montrose Soccer Club was upgraded meaning that our 5 ths and 6th XI had to find a new home for the season. I would like to thank the Shire of Yarra Ranges (especially Paul Mainey) for the use of Morrisons Reserve, Mt Evelyn. I have contacted Paul Mainey via E-mail thanking them on behalf of the MCC. I have also thanked the council for the continuing work they have done in keeping our main ground as one of the best grounds (if not the best) in the RDCA competition. The MCC have always had a good relationship with the Shire of Yarra Ranges and we should always endeavour to keep this relationship healthy. MCC the Club Administratively our club ran fairly well over the 2013/14 season without too many issues (that need noting). There is still some work to do to get our club working even better and this can be achieved with getting more people on the committee, enabling us to break down what may seem big tasks, into smaller ones, and share them around. Again I would like to thank all the committee, players and parents for their support of the Montrose Cricket Club. Peter Bromiley

Junior Coordinator’s Report

From a junior perspective, Season 13/14 started strongly. Our marketing campaign along with the Australian sides’ great performance saw youngsters and families reinvigorated and eager to explore Cricket as a local sporting option. Our Milo Program grew by 12 participants to 30. 3 additional teams were added to our competitive junior sides and the Club welcomed the return of healthy numbers at U16’s, with the majority of these teenage players transitioning to senior teams throughout the term. As late as February 2014 we were still fielding enquiries from interested parents looking to connect their children to local cricket, across all programs from Milo to Competitive grades. Season 12 /13 recorded 70 Junior Players from Milo to U14’s and Season 13/14, 117 players. Strong inner urban Clubs like Richmond, Camberwell look to preserve junior teams at a level of 9 citing this as an adequate number for senior side replenishment. Montrose is currently at 7. Our registrations increased with some migratory players from surrounding Clubs which we gratefully attribute to “word of mouth” promotion from parents and players. Feedback from the parent cohort also suggests that MCC is seen as a growing, inclusive club, improving each Season, which values its junior players and families. The inclusion of a professional website / digital archive to Season 13/14 custom built, voluntarily by Murray Thomas, with online registration facilities, sets us apart from other local Cricket Clubs. The website was an integral feature of our marketing campaign and has improved our standing with Cricket Victoria & the RDCA & certainly aided the success of our funding application for net refurbishment. The spike in junior numbers unveiled a team official shortfall that caused a lot of angst at Season start. One week out from matches only 2 of 7 sides had Coaches and Team Managers confirmed. This could have very quickly eroded our marketing advances - thankfully parents and players were very patient. By round 3 we had finalised most Coaching & Team Manager positions but some areas remained underdone. Going forward, Team Officials must be in place during the Pre-Season period. All Season 13/14 Officials have indicated a willingness to be involved again. They have also contributed constructive feedback at a review meeting in February. MCC is very grateful to these individuals for assisting the Club and we certainly couldn’t have made it through the Season without their most valued contributions. Junior Uniform came into line with the Senior Playing Tops which gives the Club a unified and polished look on the field. We introduced “Opposition Player Awards” sponsored by McDonalds Mooroolbark & Subway Montrose to encourage greater Cricket appreciation at junior level. This initiative has been celebrated by recipient Players, Opposition Clubs and the RDCA. Training was augmented by Topline sponsorship, combined with loyal Senior Players attending and running some Jr Sessions. The boys loved this, including our Milo kids, and it has been noted as a highlight of the training calendar. Thank you to the Senior Group. Montrose also introduced a school holiday skill development day with 40 juniors from U12 to U16’s attending a 5 hour specialist day at Montrose Reserve. Topline supplied the Coaching staff and we supplied the venue and lunch. This was an outstanding program and a great success that we’ll continue. The 30 minute conceptual Q&A session really got the kids thinking about the strategic elements of the game and this $30 p person session (player funded) rivalled programs that are significantly more expensive. Rep Nominations saw 4 players included in squads. Taylour Samuel & Mitch Felstead U16’s RDCA, Ethan Alderman U12’s Yarra Valley & Braden Harvey U12’s RDCA. All nominated juniors progressed to late stage trials benefitting from the experience and representing MCC with talent and integrity.

Montrose Cricket Club Annual Report 2013/14

Aims for Season 14/15 will be to solidify the MCC Jr Cricket brand. Junior age categories with large in takes will undergo selection trials, with a dedicated selection subcommittee, to ensure we field truly representational 1’s sides. Ideally no side will be entered lower than 3’s to ensure players embed the skills required to play Senior Cricket in future years. Greater support for Coaches and Team Managers will see the construction of an MCC Coaching Manual and a set of Junior Policies to bench mark best and most desirable practice and standards. Several meetings will also be included into the program so that Coaches & Team Managers can network during the Season. Hopefully we can draw upon input from the wider Club community to set up an MCC Junior Template. The Milo Program should consider moving to Thursdays to draw upon Senior Players to assist with its delivery and to avoid absenteeism that effects Fridays during the December period. The goal has always been to see each Season improve on the last and this has certainly been the case over the last few Seasons. In closing, after several Seasons of very hard work, the Junior Club is now at a launching point. We have the numbers and with that comes clout at the wider Cricket table. Season 13/14 Team Officials have represented MCC in an outstanding manner, as have our players whom I’m very proud of. Team managers & Coaches have been particularly kind and patient, offering invaluable mentoring to this fledgling Co-ordinator. MCC Committee, Daniel Carratelli, Cam Day & Shelley Taylor, Kirsty Schickerling, Scott O’Neil, Peter & Libby Bromiley, President Mark Hayhurst, Matt Gardener, Brett Mc Kane, Murray & Kay Thomas, Stuart Harvey, Jason Foulis, Gary Felstead, have also contributed much wise counsel and hours of service to Junior Cricket at Montrose to which I’m indebted and in awe – thank you. Junior Cricket requires greater volunteer input to enable our juniors to excel and achieve their potential. One family cannot be all things. It’s not in the best interest of the Club to be reliant on too few and the Samuel Family cannot physically maintain the level of volunteer hours required to run a successful Cricket program for 120+ kids, while juggling family life and business. Greater involvement offers a truly representational Club. Hopefully more enthusiastic assistance can be found in Season 14/15. It promises to be a ripper Season! Simone Samuel

Veterans Coordinator’s Report

Well! Another successful Veterans Cricket year has passed. The Veterans section of the MCC continues to flourish with another season completed. Montrose fielded two teams again this year with the ‘A’ side playing in the top division of the competition for the First time. While the spirit of Vets cricket is about having fun and enjoying the cricket, us older blokes are still competitive and it was pleasing that both sides made the finals with the ‘B’ side playing off in the grand final. Montrose has played in a Vets grand final every-year since joining the Vets competition. It was great to see a lot of new faces taking to the field this year and a variety of ages, I believe we had the youngest Vets player (Ben Alexander just turned 40) and the oldest (Alan Clarke 72) playing for our club. So if you are 40 get down and be a part of it… There has been a lot of interest around the club regarding the Vets competition and it would be great to have the numbers to enter a third side in 2014/15. Please let me (0438 068 638), Rod Sutherland or Peter Bromiley know if you are interested in playing. Steve Clarke

Club Coach Report

The Club

Coaches Report If we judge the success of a season by the amount of Premierships we win then unfortunately, we didn’t have a great year at MCC in 2013/14. Having said that, I believe that’d be a very narrow minded point of view if that is all we based and judged our Season on. Whilst it was unquestionably a disappointing Season in many aspects, there are many positives to come out of the year.

The Main Positives Handing 1st XI debuts to 15 yr old Mitch Felstead and 16 yr old Ryan Evans. Having specialist batting and bowling coaches come down and help the players throughout the pre-season and season proper. The 2nds playing off in a GF and whilst we weren’t good enough to win the flag, the guys represented the club admirably well. The 3rds performing fantastically to play in a higher grade and make the finals. The 5ths coming from 4th position to play in a GF. Their PF win over Ainslie Park was one of my highlights for the year especially having three 15 year olds in the team.

The hard work by our volunteers in regards to the redevelopment of the nets. The better support and attendances to our Social Functions. The continual growth in numbers to our Junior Teams and Programs. The willingness of some players to volunteer and help out at junior training throughout the age groups. The under 16’s training on a Thursday night and being part of the Senior Presentation Night which has and will continual to make the transition from Junior’s to Senior’s a lot smoother. The growth in Senior Numbers which led to the club fielding a 6thXI team.

The Major Disappointment The amount of times players made themselves unavailable each week; especially the 1st and 2ndXI cricketers. How can we expect or aspire to be anything more than a middle of the road Wilkins Cup club with that sort of commitment? Hopefully next season our best 22 players are a lot more committed than they were this season or else we’ll continue to be mediocre.

Captains A new player to the club Jason Ingram was asked to captain the 6thXI. Although he was a bit hesitant at first, he took on the job and led the team to 5th position on the ladder at the end of the season. He usually had a mix of younger and older players each week. He was able to build a fantastic morale amongst the guys and his team were very well known for coming back and supporting the club on a Saturday Night. Great job 6thXI and Dinger.

The 5thXI were the highlight for me. They were very lucky to sneak into the finals but they took their chance with both hands. A nail biting win in the PF against some quality opposition was one of the memorable moments of the season especially with three of our under 16’s playing. Unfortunately we weren’t able to win the GF but the guys can be very proud of their efforts. Brett McKane led the team unbelievably well and was very selfless in his pursuit of getting as many of the young guys to experience playing in the finals as possible. He went as far as dropping himself for the QF to ensure none of the young guys missed out. Kudos to you Brett.

Montrose Cricket Club Annual Report 2013/14

Our outgoing President Wogga led the 4ths to a finals berth but they unfortunately lost in the first week to end their season. Wogga had a good blend of experienced and young guys in the team and also gave plenty of opportunity to some of the junior players that played in his side. It was a shame they couldn’t go deep into the finals but they ran into a very good North Ringwood 4thXI team and we weren’t good enough unfortunately. Good to see some young guys representing our 4thXI in that final.

Rob Strugnell had the tough gig of captaining a side for the first time with his team playing in a higher grade. Rob grew in the role week by week and developed, learnt and improved as the season went on. To play against 2ndXI teams and some very strong 3rdXI sides most weeks and to win enough games to make the finals was a great achievement. In addition to that and the thing I’m most happy about is, there were plenty of young guys who not only played in this team, but actually had very good seasons with the bat and ball. Taking into account the good opposition, the improvement on their runs scored and wickets taken from the season before and to play a big role in the team shows they are now ready to take the next step and be given the chance to start showing their worth in the next grade. Well done fellas.

The 2s were able to take the next step from making a PF the year before to playing in a GF this season. Unfortunately we weren’t good enough on the day but the guys should be very proud of the character they showed to fight the game out to the end. There were a few new faces to the team from last year and the guys were once again well led by Andy Walker. Andy is very good at motivating the guys, getting them to play for him and each other and that showed throughout the season with the great win/loss ratio. Thanks for your efforts 2ndXI and Walks.

The 1stXI had a disappointing season. Making a GF last season then dropping to 5th and not playing finals was unacceptable. We struggled to consistently make enough runs to win games of cricket and found it tough taking 10 wickets most weeks. There were no real standouts with the bat or ball in regards to any of the players having a great year which makes it tough to play finals. On the flipside to that, we got more games of cricket into some of the younger players which will no doubt hold us as a club in good stead for the short and long term future. I also ask the players and supporters of the club to stay patient as we have a very young bowling attack and some good young batsman and we can’t expect them to be playing their best and most consistent cricket at the age of 18-21. That’s not an excuse because if anyone knows me then they know I don’t make excuses nor ever want to hear any. I’m just stating the facts.

My Final Comments Regarding On Field We have a healthy list of older and younger players. Our depth isn’t as strong as some other clubs but it’s not too bad. We could do with recruiting one very good bowler and batsman. We have many promising young cricketers that will be future 1stXI cricketers in my mind. They all develop at different ages and stages of their life. As I’ve said from day 1 when I started 2 years ago, we must keep an eye on the now and an eye on the future. We must find that balance from the 1s all the way through to the 6s where our younger cricketers are being nurtured, mentored, educated and shown how to play the game in regards to the skills of the game (batting, bowling, fielding, work ethic) and the manner in which they play it (hard but fair, right spirit, sportsmanship). They must be given every chance and opportunity to show their worth. Going forward, that balance will require a certain number of experienced and younger players in each team for it to properly work. As long as these young blokes are doing the right thing by the club in regards to training and work ethic, we need to start to have a look at some of them and give them the opportunity.

The Committee/Volunteers Apologies in advance if I forget to thank certain people but I’d like to show my/our gratitude to the volunteers of the club who give their time to make my job easier as coach and everything they do for the players.

The committee thanks for your continued support and for giving up your time for meetings, organising functions and everything else you do for the club. Robyn Whelan and Libby Bromiley (congrats on your life membership Lib), thanks for giving up your Saturday afternoon’s to score for the 1s and 2s.

Kenny Hayhurst, Big Col (congrats on clubman of the year Col, well deserved), Bluey and Doc Rees for making lunches, helping behind the bar, cleaning the rooms and everything else you guys do (too many to name).

Pete Bromiley for all your communication, correspondence and support for myself and the club it was invaluable. To all the specialist coaches that came down to help with the bowling and batting, thanks for your time and efforts.

To Simone Samuel, our club will forever be indebted to you for all the work you have done and continue to do behind the scenes. The doubling of numbers in our juniors over the last few years, junior co-ordinator, organiser of milo cricket, organiser of junior presentation night, committee member of the senior club, so many other things that escape me. What doesn’t escape me is the absolute professionalism you bring to the club. Very meticulous in everything you plan, do and organise. We’re very lucky to have you.

To our outgoing President Mark “Wogga” Hayhurst, thanks very much for all of your support, hard work, efforts and selflessness over a 3 year period. The players, supporters and members are very grateful for everything you have done for us, them and the club. Too many tasks to name all of them but you’ve coached junior teams and continue to do so. You captained teams which included many younger cricketers mentored on and off the field the many junior players coming through the ranks as well. Always on the go up in the rooms on a Thursday Night ensuring the 6 teams are organised and ready for the weekend’s action. Ensuring all the players are looked after with dinner on Thursday Nights. Also organising the team uniforms so we all look a big part of the MCC. The list goes.

Thanks to my Assistant Coach Rohan Stewart for all his selfless work, patience and continued support.

Thanks to Miff Smith for helping out this Season also with the fielding side of things and for being that new voice with new ideas.

I’d also like to thank the players’ wives, girlfriends and families for their patience. Lastly, thanks to my wife Brooke for her ongoing support, her tolerance and for looking after all the kids on game day and training nights.
