WHAT IS A MOOC?

IS A MODEL FOR DELIVERING LEARNING CONTENT ONLINE TO ANY PERSON WHO WANTS TO TAKE A

COURSE, WITH NO LIMIT ON ATTENDANCE.

MOOCS ARE STRUCTURED SIMILAR TO TRADITIONAL ONLINE HIGHER EDUCATION,

WHEREBY STUDENTS WATCH LECTURES, READ ASSIGNED MATERIAL, PARTICIPATE IN ONLINE DISCUSSIONS AND FORUMS, AND COMPLETE

QUIZZES AND TESTS ON THE COURSE MATERIAL.

THE FIRST MOOC WAS LAUNCHED IN 2008, IT WAS CALLED ‘CONNECTIVISM AND CONNECTIVE KNOWLEDGE 2008 (CCK08), CREATED BY EDUCATORS STEPHEN DOWNES AND GEORGE SIEMENS. BUILDING OFF A FOR-CREDIT COURSE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA, CANADA, THIS WAS THE FIRST CLASS DESIGNED BEHIND THE ACRONYM OF ‘MOOC’ AND USED MANY DIFFERENT PLATFORMS TO ENGAGE STUDENTS WITH THE TOPIC, INCLUDING FACEBOOK GROUPS, WIKI PAGES, BLOGS, FORUMS AND OTHER RESOURCES. THEN IN 2012, ANOTHER MOOC EXPERIMENT CAUGHT ACADEMICS ATTENTION. THE TERM MOOC WAS COINED IN 2008 BY DAVE CORMIER AND BRYAN ALEXANDER.

TOPICS I WOULD LIKE TO PURSUE IN MY FUTURE MOOC ARE GENERAL GAME PLAYING (COURSERA) AND BASIC ARITHMETIC (CANVAS.NET). THE GENERAL GAME PLAYING IS THEREFORE LEARNING ABOUT GENERAL GAME PLAYING AS IT IS (GGP) AND DEVELOP GGP PROGRAMS CAPABLE OF COMPETING AGAINST HUMANS AND OTHER PROGRAMS IN GGP COMPETITIONS IN THE FIELD OF MATHEMATICS AS I WILL BE PREPARING THE LEARNERS TO BE FIT IN EDUCATION. BASIC ARITHMETIC COURSE IS A REVIEW OF BASIC ARITHMETIC SKILLS THAT SERVE AS A PREREQUISITE FOR PLACEMENT INTO AND SUCCESS IN PRE-COLLEGE AND COLLEGE-LEVEL ALGEBRA COURSES. IN THIS COURSE, PRIMARY EMPHASIS WILL BE PLACED ON FUNDAMENTAL OPERATIONS WITH WHOLE NUMBERS, FRACTIONS, DECIMALS, AND INTEGERS

Both the courses General Game Playing & Basic Arithmetic are basic mathematics literacy and skills. Which takes approximately 7weeks-per

course, 8-9 hours/week with free final examinations in English.
