There will be two demonstrations on Wednesday, December 10, 2008; the first will be held from 10:30 am to noon; and the second will be held during the early evening from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. The third demonstration is family-oriented and child-friendly, so youth ages 6-12 are also invited to attend. It will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2008 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Join Sandra Vásquez, inventor of the Masa Tamales Masa Spreader, as she demonstrates how to make Tamales more efficiently with the help of a modern gadget. Sandra says that, “Tamale cooks can spread masa on a dozen cornhusks in about a minute.” Let Sandra show you the quick and easy way to prepare tamales, and to learn being. Friends of the ARK is a tax exempt, non- profit corporation, organized exclusively for the prevention of cruelty to animals. Its primary purpose is to raise funds for the rescue of injured, sick and abused wildlife that will be rehabilitated, maintained at The ARK, and released back to their natural wildlife habitat or other licensed facility. Members of the organization are looking forward to working with Kris on this new adventure. Friends of the ARK, through Turtle Trail 2008 will have 40 sculptures for sale on November 8th at the Great Turtle Release Auction in Port Aransas. Turtles are sponsored by businesses and individuals. The cast aluminum turtle that is 17” long and 15” wide is a great canvas for an artistic creation. Sponsors paid their artist an agreed price for the artwork, not to be less than $200 and purchased the aluminum turtle from Friends of The ARK for $100. Sponsors are honored and recognized at receptions called “Hatchings,” and in the local papers and all available media. Also honored are the artists and their work. (See the Turtle Gallery from 2006 at turtletrail.org ) Businesses and individuals are helping Turtle Trail 2008 by providing a place, beverages and food for a “Hatching.” We plan to introduce 8 to 10 works of “Turtle Art” at each event. Turtles will be on display at local business during the year and will be united for the first time the night before the auction for a preview of the art at Port A Gallery, November 7th. All contributions to this project are tax deductible as the law allows. He signed contracts with their parents to adopt, pay and train them to sing, dance and play music. The troupe performed all over Europe and later in the United States. Many of the kids he adopted never saw their families again. They did a lot of traveling and a teacher was along to continue their education. MGM commissioned Singer to provide 122 munchkin actors for the Wizard of Oz. Any little person that wanted to work in the film had to go through Singer. He then made arrangements for room and board and supervised their activities. According to one of the actors, they were to be paid $100/week but some got $50 or nothing. Because of his actions, everyone left him after the movie. Barty was disappointed because he was too young to be in the film. The scenes took two months to shoot and the actors worked long hours. Actors under age 18 could only work until 5 p.m. LPOA founder Billy Barty died in 2000 at the age of 76. LPOA is for people who are 4’10” and shorter. There are fewer little people now because of a growth hormone developed in the sixties which can increase development for those with a pituitary gland deficiency. Some children to whom it has been administered have grown up to five inches in one year. LPOA is a serious yet fun organization judging by a couple of t-shirts that were popular at conventions. One big seller at the Utah regional gathering was “Utah, me short” and “Short happens”. I enjoyed my time with the people at this event and hope they enjoyed our Island and come back again. Parks & Recreation Offers Tamales ClassesTis the season to be tamale
