A well designed fin does more then keep you from spinning out. The de-gree of foil - the curved cross section of the fin, along with the angle (how the fin tilts in relation to the bottom of the board), toe and other factors can add different dimensions to the feel of your board. The foils can create pro-jection, torque, speed, maneuverabil-ity and release, and affect your board dramatically. Future Fins has created some of the most successful foils available, with decades of experience and testing, along with pro riders in-put, and input from the average surfer going into every series.

why try new fins?[ Brian Heratage ] - You need to experiment with these different composites. The plastic fins that typically come with a board are very flexible and could cause you to lose speed. It's like putting a Pinto engine inside a Porsche. A lighter, stiffer fiberglass or honeycomb fin will give you more response in your turns. When you amake a turn at the bottom of a wave you want to rev the engine and gain speed to approach the top. When you connect you want to be at a 12 o'clock radius and that loss of speed wont get you there.Try these fins and decide what works best for you.

Mid-AtlanticOur smaller template for medium sized light footed surfers. A solid base with small tip is perfect for a fast loose style. Try this laid back template in wrapping point breaks.

So... This was my second time surfing and I was at 2nd avenue in North Wildwood with my boy friend and some close friends. I was riding an 8"6 fun board and the waves were like thigh to waist high. I was the first one to paddle out and was in the water for not even five minutes when I go for my first wave. From what I can remember I started to stand up and my board started to nose dive, then flipped over in shallow water and I landed on top of the board. When I landed on the board I think the nose had gotten dug into the sand so my impact was pretty heavy when I landed on the fin. When I stood up, I didn't feel any pain, just pressure on my thigh. When I looked down I saw an orange puffy flab of skin hanging from my thigh and that's when I

started to panic. I was yelling to my boy friend who was just paddling out and I remember seeing his jaw dropping facial expression. I literally was holding my flesh together as I got out of the water. When I got to the beach my friends called 911 and kept telling me not to look at it, so of course I looked down and that's when I started to go into shock.

To make a long story short, my thigh was punctured so bad there was a 3-4 inch hole on my thigh. The doctor had to stitch the inside muscle area of the wound first, then stitch the outside to close it up. There were around 250 stitches total, with three hours of surgery. I didn't want any pain medication, so they gave me Novocain instead. About ten days later I went back to the hospital because they had to drain my leg of all old blood to prevent any infection which hurt like hell. All this thick dark blood was being pushed out of the wound and it was disgusting. When they took the stitches out the wound just opened right up so when they were done draining it

they put staples in. A very fun experience to say the least and should get the staples out soon...

MD - This is probably one of the worst surfing injuries I have ever seen... I think the million dollar question is, will you ever go surfing again?

The Injured - Yes, I will be back out in the water to learn how to surf.

MD - I have to ask... How was the movie Soul Surfer?

The Injured - ....

MD - Just Kidding :)

What an amazing day in WWC for The life rolls organization. Being a part of the event, we had the opportunity to witness something that seemed impossible become reality. Life Rolls On is an organization that is dedicated to improving the quality of life for those affected by spinal cord injury through the use of action sports. Local surfer Chad Desatnick had suffered a very severe accident from a hurricane swell, shattering his C6 and C7 Vertebrae back in 2001. Even during his 18 month rehabilitation he has been involved with LRO and looks forward to running the event year

after year. On September 29th Chad will host the 6th annual golf tournament held at the Cape May National Golf Course for the benefit of the LRO organization. Everyone involved with the event did a fantastic job and the emotional impact from watching these surfers reactions was indescribable. Great job everyone....

Summers in New Jersey are known for its overcrowded

lineups and second-rate waves. It’s easy for people on

the outside to make the mistake of thinking there are

poor waves in this neck of the woods at all times because

the majority of them only see the waves during its worst

months. June gloom came and went with the occasional

bump to get surfers by, but for the most part it left us all

teetering with the hope of an active hurricane season. The

Atlantic has the potential to produce major waves and

minor damages (hopefully) up along the east coast in the

mid-late season around August and September. The two

months account for 61% of the named storms since 1950.

Hurricane season stretches from June 1 to November 30

and many experts are predicting around 15-18 named

tropical storms, 8 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes. The

average number of storms in a season is 10. Keep in mind

that this information doesn’t mean we will have an above

average season of swell. It just means there will be a better

chance of swell. And to be honest, we’re all crossing our

fingers just to be sure. Cape May local George Allen is

hoping for big things out of August and September. “I’m

always optimistic when it comes to the surf we get here

later in the season,” Allen said. “You just have to know that

June and July always suck while making sure the summer

doesn’t get you soft for when the good stuff comes.”

The reason for the buzz is because of the cooling

of waters over the Eastern Pacific Ocean caused

by La Niña. The cool waters invariably shifts

global wind patterns, produces lighter wind shear

in the Atlantic Basin and helps nurture tropical

cyclone formation. Those same light winds make

up a crucial ingredient in the creation of a named

storm. We can only hope that the usually quiet July

presents us with some swell, but our sights are

mostly set on August and September. During those

months the Atlantic waters are warmest because

of the constant exposure to sunlight throughout the

previous months and thus, we get the highest sea

surface temperature and ocean depth temperature

acting as fuel for tropical storms. As we saw last

year and two years before that, it’s safe to say that

business will be a-boomin’ around that time.

With June in our rearview mirrors it’s safe to say

that many of us spent a lot of time in and around

skate parks or cruising around on longboards

trying to stay prepared. The important aspect is

to stay optimistic and to keep your eyes glued to

hurricane trackers. Although it’s not as exciting as

the Kentucky Derby, it makes things a little more

fun to place bets on which storm names will come

to fruition. Take your picks: Arlene,

Bret, Cindy, Don, Emily, Franklin,

Gert, Harvey, Irene, Jose, Katia,

Lee, Maria, Nate, Ophelia, Philippe,

Rina, Sean, Tammy, Vince and last

but not least; Whitney. I’m going

with Philippe and Gert. Mark my

words.

Moondoggie: How would you describe the importance of fitness and surfers?

Jeff: Fitness is one of the keys to performance, A surfers ability to go from a lying position to a standing position in a split second and maintain their balance is impacted by two areas of fitness. One the core strength abdominal, hip and leg muscles that help the surfer pop up and two the upper body, shoulders and back muscles that help stabilize the surfer as they pop up. If a surfer understands these key areas of fitness it can give them a tremendous advantage of being able to pop up in a balanced position and allow their focus to be entirely on what they will do on the wave rather than trying to find their balance while getting on the wave on the wave.

Moondoggie: Can you talk a bit about all the impact of new board technology and shapes?

Jeff: There are alot of new board designs out there and stuff just keeps getting better all the time. shapers are getting better at meeting surfers needs thru the different types of waves and their skill level. I could go on about all the different shapes and designs out there and that shapers are getting better about finding what the people need. However one of the challenges about that is surfers can help by not putting too much emphasis on the equipment and and putting more focus on themselves. If I could somehow inspire or help them to rearrange their thinking that it's as much about the surfers conditioning and awareness of their paddling skills, knowledge about wave size and speed and wave positioning, and what to do once you're on it, as it is about their equipment It's not as much about the "Arrow" as it is about the "Indian". There seems to be a tendency to place too much emphasis on the equipment and not enough on ourselves. You take a guy like Kelly Slater, you could give him a wooden door and he could surf on it because he has done the work and is conditioned. Guys like you and me can benefit from the many shapes and designs immensely if we remember to take responsibility for our conditioning, awareness and knowledge and understand that the equipment is not magical answer to improvement.
