THE HARVEST FESTIVAL OF A THOUSAND
FLAVOURS
Nestled between the Orobic and
Rhaetic Alps, just over an hour’s drive
from Milan, are the beautiful landscapes
of the lower Valtellina.
A place of rich traditions in wine production and
culinary excellence in an unspoilt land with its own
folklore, ancient stone villages and artistic expression.
“Morbegno in Cantina” is the event which will both help you discover the typical flavours
of our valley and take you back in time, down in the ancient cellars of the historical old town
centre, from the historical homes of the nobility to churches hundreds of years old, in a maze of
narrow streets where you can slowly wander with a glass of exquisite wine in your hand. Now in its
twentieth edition, with almost half a million visitors over the years, this is one of the most important
events of the autumn season in Sondrio province.
Join in and sample the excellent traditional wines and cuisine of the Valtellina in one of the most
fascinating old towns of the region, where time seems to stand still.
Or set off on a road of discovery through the scenographic terraces on the slopes of the Cech
mountains, where the vineyards offer breathtaking views of the Valtellina.
Lose yourself in the colours of autumn, in its flavours and perfumes and take
your time to fully appreciate them.
Morbegno in Cantina is not simply the chance to
taste the excellent wines of our valley and specialities
such as Heritage Bitto (our traditional full-fat cheese
protected and presided over by Slow Food) or
even the many traditional dishes of the Valtellina:
it is, above all, a journey through time, in the
characteristic cellars of the palaces in the old
town where, years ago, this special nectar
was preserved. The old town, nestled
at the foot of the mountain along
the banks of the Bitto river,
conserves the oldest palaces
with their frescoed walls
and pretty wrought
iron balconies in
its narrow
streets.
The often hidden entrances to the cellars , the steep staircases which descend into the depths of
the earth and the farmers’ tools, will all take you back in time.
Morbegno in Cantina is also an opportunity to see some of the many works of art: first of all Malacrida
Palace, the 18th century noble mansion which stands out in the ancient district of Scimicà, in the upper
part of the old town. Its exquisite frescoes in the great hall and the magnificent view over the
town from its beautiful Italian garden are well worth seeing.
A short distance away, the beautiful baroque bell tower annouces the presence of the small
church of Saint Peter (17th century) with its richly frescoed interior. Continue along the
narrow roads of the centre until you reach Saint John’s Square where the imposing
Saint John’s Church (San Giovanni) will be revealed, solemn and austere. Finish
your walk in the wide Saint Anthony’s Square (Piazza St. Antonio) where
you can see the old church with its splendid Renaissance frescoes and
the adjacent fourth century Dominican convent with its lovely
arched cloisters whose walls are also frescoed. And when you
get to the end of your tour - with your eyes and heart
satiated by art, history and evocative atmosphere -
stop and taste a delicious plate of “pizzoccheri”,
“polenta taragna” or “sciatt”.

Thanks to the mild
climate even in winter
time and thanks to
constant sunshine, the gentle
slopes of the Rhaetian side of the
Valtellina (the slopes of the Cech ) are
perfect for the cultivation of vines. The
terraces rise from the bottom of the valley as
far as the chestnut and maple woods, halfway up
the mountainside.
Viticulture in the Valtellina, mentioned by Leonardo
da Vinci, is considered heroic because of the effort and
difficulties involved, with vineyards literally wedged between the
rocks. All the work is done by hand: sweat and toil which can only be
justified by great passion and love of one’s land.
Discover the dense network of trails
and pathways, on foot or by mountain
bike, for an enchanting panoramic
excursion amongst the terraced vineyards
and delightful old villages, where you’ll come across
a series of ancient churches: Saint Provino’s in Dazio,
Saint Andrew’s in Civo, Saint James’ in Roncaglia, Saint
Bartholomew’s in Caspano, Saint Fedele’s in Mello and Saint
Alexander’s in Traona. In Mello, Traona and Cercino you can join the
traditional itineraries (Cech cellars: blue itinerary and brown itinerary)
or, if you prefer, you can take part in the guided tour along the Wine Trail,
stopping off at six different cellars to taste the locally produced wines.

For lovers of good food, in the ancient villages
of Dazio, Civo, Caspano, and Gerola Alta,
“Gustosando” opens the doorways to courtyards and
cellars for a gastronomical tour of exquisite recipes of
ancient memory.
On the Bitto Valley tours, you can also discover the king of
Valtellina cheeses: Heritage Bitto which - with its unique aroma, taste
and colour - is an extraordinary good mature cheese. Heritage
Bitto, protected and presided over by Slow Food, originated
here in the Bitto Valley, from which it takes its name. It
is still produced exclusively up in the alpine pastures
during summertime.
Take in the spectacular view of the valley from
the sunny terraces of Bema - if you like,
while “flying” with the Flyemotion
team - or contemplate the portals
and frescoes of the ancient
villages.
Or you might like to try “matusc”,
a traditional cheese from Albaredo per San
Marco. Or go the Gerola Ecomuseum which
is also worth a visit. You will find there a
union between past and present: you will
discover and appreciate the history, traditions
and culture of this mountainous
territory; you will enjoy
the natural landscape, the
marks that man and his
faith have left on it, and,
naturally, the typical local
products.

Morbegno
a world of sport art and culture
and its Valleys
A world of history and exceptional artistic expression,
from the origins of Christianity to the Renaissance and
Baroque eras: true gems of art and faith can be found
all over our territory. Works by Gaudenzio Ferrari,
Giovanni Battista Pittoni, Pietro and Cesare Ligari,
Giovanni Gavazzeni, Giacomo Parravicini (known as
Gianolo), Carlo Innocenzo Carloni and many others are
just waiting for visitors to discover them in all their glory.
As well as visiting the Malacrida Palace, the Collegiate
Church of Saint John the Baptist (San Giovanni Battista)
and the Dominican complex of Saint Anthony (St.
Antonio) in Morbegno, we also recommend taking a
look at the Sanctuary of the Assumption of the blessed
Virgin Mary (Santuario dell’Assunta), a Renaissance
church consecrated in 1506. On the facade, which
was reconstructed in the 1800’s, you can admire the
decorations by Tommaso Rodari, whilst the interior is
dominated by the wooden altarpiece – carved by Giovan
Angelo and Tiburzio del Majno, painted and finished in
gold leaf by Gaudenzio Ferrari and Fermo Stella – with
the splendid fresco of the Enthroned Virgin and Child,
dated 1440.
A stroll through art and history
A short way from the old town centre, the
imposing Ganda Bridge stands out over river
Adda. Built in 1778 by Milan architect Francesco
Bernardino Ferrari in place of a previous structure
from the 1500’s which was washed away by
the River Adda in full flood, the Ganda Bridge
was the only passage for those travelling
northwards from Saint Mark’s Pass through the
Valchiavenna. Just a ten-minute drive will take
you to one of the most beautiful places in the
valley: the site of the Cluny Priory of Saint Peter,
in Vallate, dating back to the 16th century. In a
picturesque setting, surrounded by chestnut and
robinia trees, all that now remains of the ancient
complex are the low bell tower, the apse, part
of the south wall and the ruins of an adjacent
building. The bell tower is a typical example of
Valtellina architecture: low, with a sturdy square
base, pyramid shaped roof covered with slates
and four large mullioned windows surmounted
by hanging arches. The decorative bands of the
apse are also exquisite.
Your holidays: sports and adventure
“Io soleva questi anni a dietro
come sapete, il tempo de la state
andarmene in Valtellina e quivi
a Morbegno, ma più spesso a
Caspano e ai bagni del Masino
diportarmi, mentre che i caldi
duravano, e godermi quei freschi
che ordinariamente ci sono, perché
da mezzo luglio io, che altrove
le lenzuola non posso a dosso
sostenere, a Caspano la notte una
buona coperta teneva. In quella
terra sono di molti gentiluomini, i
quali, ancor che stiano su quell’alta
montagna, vivono nondimeno molto
civilmente con delicati cibi e vini
preziosissimi. E ben che tutta la valle
faccia ottimi vini, nondimeno la costa
di Tragona, che è sotto Caspano, gli
genera di tutta eccellenza”.
According to the writer Matteo Bardello, Morbegno and
the lower Valtellina were already very popular destinations
in the 1500’s and were much appreciated by the Lombard
nobility because of their plesant climate, thermal springs
and excellent food and wine. Nestled between the Orobic
and Rhaetian Alps, the “Gateway to Valtellina” can offer
all this and more at just over an hour’s drive from Milan
and a few minutes from Lake Como. This lovely town is
set in a beautiful landscape where rich enological and
culinary traditions are married with a land wich still
preserves ,unchanged, its Folklore, ancient villages and
works of art. Morbegno and its Valleys can also offer
visitors an ample choice of boh summer and winter sports.
And, above all, nature at its best. The amazing view over
the Alps is something you can always enjoy, whether
you partecipate in sporting activities or not. In the lower
Valtellina there are three important protected areas: the
“Orobic Mountains of Valtellina “ Regional Park, the Mello
Valley Natural Reserve and Pian di Spagna-Lake Mezzola
Natural Reserve.
Your holidays: sports and adventure
For those who enjoy tranquil days out, on foot or by
bike, we recommend the Valtellina Trail: an asphalted
route for pedestrians and cyclists which follows the
River Adda from Colico to Tirano. Many services are
offered along the trail such as rail transport combined
with bike rental and shuttles (for assistance/pick
up etc.) It is an ideal itinerary for a family getaway.
Keen mountain bikers will enjoy the mule paths and
driveways in the Tartano Valley, the Bitto Valley and
on the sunny slopes of the Cech mountains. Trekking
enthusiasts can choose from a number of excursions
of varying difficulty, from walks suitable for all the
family, to itineraries which last several days along the
historical “Sentiero Roma” (Rome Trail) or the Gran
Via delle Orobie (Great Orobic Trail), for a real feel of
mountain wilderness. The climbing walls and boulders,
as well as the famous climbing routes in the Val di
Mello Nature Reserve (Mello Valley) are perfect for
those who want to get the most out of their climbing.
And for those who like a challenge on a vertical rock
face, the Val Masino (Masino Valley) offers classic
climber routes which have entered the realm of modern
mountaineering legend. Winter time in Valgerola
(the Gerola Valley) offers skiers and snowboarders the
opportunity to have fun in the Pescegallo ski area. Thanks
to its north facing slopes,it is the only ski area of the Lower
Valtellina where it is possible to ski on natural snow until
late spring. The Bitto and Tartano Valleys, along with the
Sella di Pioda, are magical places for ski mountaineering
enthusiasts who can enjoy both the silence of the ascent
and exciting descents in fresh snow. On the other side
of the valley, in Albaredo per San Marco (in the Orobie
Park) the fun is guaranteed! With “Fly Emotion” you can
try the thrill of flying: using a special harness suspended
from a cable, it is possible to fly across the pristine Bitto
Valley. You will enjoy a breathtaking view and feel a rush
of pure adrenalin. And finally, as of summer 2015, the
newly opened “Aerobosco di Bema” Adventure Park,
offers fun obstacle routes of varying difficulty. Routes with
suspended platforms and leaps into the void, which follow
paths around tree trunks, over wooden bridges and with
ropes for swinging from one tree to another. It’s a magical
adventure – in complete safety – in the midst of the lush,
green Orobie Park.
