Helping older elementary school children improve reading skills while encouraging a love of reading are keys for preparing them for the educational
challenges of middle school. According to the International Reading Association, because of the huge influx of print coming their way (both on paper and
online), “Their literacy development is just as important, and requires just as much attention, as that of beginning readers.”
Giving pre-adolescent students exposure to a wide variety of high-quality books will not only help them become lifelong readers but lifelong learners,
as well. In addition, if reading becomes an activity they look forward to, one chosen rather than required, positive experiences emerge that shape their
future academic growth. This popular Dr. Suess quote may say it best: “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn,
the more places you’ll go.”
To encourage reading confidence in your child, provide as many positive reading experiences as possible. While suggested titles can prove valuable, let
him or her choose their reading materials as often as possible. Help readers find authors or genres they enjoy, then enlist the help of a librarian to help
them find read-alikes, similar titles, or additional books that would broaden their interests. Working together with librarians, teachers, and other reading
professionals will help you keep them moving forward in their development as strong readers and smart students.
