Fixing Legend

Fixing DetailsLumberworx has a specifically designed Laminated Strand Lumber (LSL) garage lintel.

To assist installers we offer a specific design solution for fixing the lintel a) With wind uplift restraint to the load conditions described below b) Without wind uplift restraint where an alternative uplift solution will be used. c) Without wind uplift where there is a nearby stud preventing perpendicular fixing through the adjacent trimmer studs These fixings also take account of “edge distance” requirements If you require clarification or assistance please contact Lumberworx on the Freephone number below.

FIXING ENGINEERED WOOD PRODUCTS

Laminated Strand Lumber (LSL)Lumberworx holds a CodeMark for this modern EWP that is manufactured in Maine, USA, from sustainably managed forests. Its pre-treated hardwood strands are pressed in a large steam injection press which results in a dense timber product high in shear strength suited to our H1.2 hazard class…….and no solvents.

In North America this product is used in “whole of house” framing applications; trusses, studs, rafters, joists and beams.

It is a very versatile and economic product and a good choice where more span than SG8 is required without the cost of high grade LVL.

Fixing LSLIt is possible that framing nailers and nails available in NZ may not fully drive nails home on the job site; LSL is used in Australia where the Paslode IM90i and Paslode Engineered Wood nails are available. The options here in NZ are:1. Using pneumatic nailers at 110psi2. Screwing3. Bolting.

It is the screwing option that Lumberworx proposes for LSL on the job site as the next stage of adopting a larger range of screw fixing options for its entire range of EWPs.

The increased nail holding of LSL makes screwing a good option when those occasional little bloopers occur and deconstruction is required.

Lumberworx will offer European high performance structural timber screws such as Wurth and Rothoblaas. These are highly ductile and manufactured from high resis-tance steel. They feature “fast start” cutting tip and sharp under-head ribs for a tight flush finish.

These will be in the Lumberworx project package and may be ordered separately with loose timber.

Screw Laminating Boards.Use 50mm or 80mm screws to the nail pattern in NZS3604 Cl 2.4.4.7 or the design shown here.

FIXING ENGINEERED WOOD PRODUCTS

Coming later will be a wide range of fixings for all EWPs such as the fixing of rafters to ridge beams, fixing bearer beams to top plate, fixing joists to trimmers, bearers to piles etc.

Screw Fixing Laminated Strand Lumber (LSL) to I-Beams

At each joist an 80mm screw top and bottom

At cantilevers with a 45mm end trimmer, a 100mm screw top and bottom.

At parallel boundary (LWX F5 detail) a 50mm screw every 400mm top and bottom and a nail through the I-Beam at 400mm

Between joists an 80mm screw at 45°.
