Grandma Knows Best By Amber McCormick
1 “Every day is a new opportunity,” said the speaker who came to Kenzie’s school. He was there to talk to the kids about making good choices. Kenzie wondered how this man could be so opEmisEc. She had always tried to do her best, but some days were just so difficult. The speaker seemed so posiEve. She needed to find a way to be happier, like him. 2 Kenzie had to wait for her grandma to pick her up aMer school. She was always running late. Kenzie tried to make the best of it, as she waited at the boNom of the staircase at the front of the building. She rummaged through her backpack to find her notebook. She started to brainstorm a list of things she could do to make herself feel beNer. 3 For starters, she could spend her Eme doing more things she liked to do, like riding her bike. She always loved to ride her bike around her old neighborhood. But then she remembered that she couldn’t ride her bike at her grandma’s apartment. There were no bike paths and there were too many cars around. “It’s not safe,” her grandmother had said. 4 What if she took an art class? She had heard from her friend at school that the local art museum offered art classes on Saturday mornings. But that was no good either. She knew her grandma couldn’t afford it. Money had been Eght since she had moved in. She’d just have to use her sketchpad at the apartment. 5 As Kenzie conEnued to think, her grandma pulled up. She gathered her things, stuffed her notepad and pencil back in her bag, and hurried to the car. As she opened the door, her grandma said, “Hurry up! We’ve got somewhere to be!” 6 “What?” Kenzie asked. “We never go anywhere.” 7 “Well, today we are going somewhere,” replied her grandmother. 8 “Where?” asked Kenzie. 9 “It’s a surprise!” her grandmother said excitedly. 10 They drove away from the school, towards Anna’s house. Instead of turning on Anna’s street, they kept going. They drove past the park on the corner and the grocery store. They turned into an empty parking lot just past the dance studio. Kenzie wondered where they could be going. Surely her grandmother wasn’t taking her to dance lessons. She wasn’t cut out for dancing. There wasn’t a graceful bone in her body. Dancers had to be coordinated and she had made a habit out of tripping on her own feet. 11 To her relief, her grandmother walked past the dance studio and into a plain warehouse behind it. There were no signs to idenEfy the building from the outside. So, she followed her grandma wondering what she had up her sleeve.
Week 1
12 As she opened the door to the warehouse, she heard a commoEon. She peered into the huge open space and saw kids everywhere. They were talking wildly. Immediately, Kenzie wondered what to do. Large crowds made her nervous. She wasn’t sure what they were doing. Most of them had papers in their hands. And they were all so animated in their conversaEons. Kenzie was confused. 13 “Well, what do you think?” asked her grandmother. 14 “What are they doing?” Kenzie asked. 15 “Welcome to the Seaside Community Drama Club!” her grandmother announced. 16 “Drama club?” Kenzie looked puzzled. The thought of acEng out her feelings made Kenzie feel terrified. Why would her grandmother bring her here? 17 “Come on!” her grandmother yelled over the noise. 18 They joined a small group of kids who were pracEcing for their next performance. They were going to do something they called “Spoken Word.” It’s kind of like reciEng poetry with a lot of expression. Kenzie didn’t think she would like this or be able to parEcipate. But, she didn’t want to let her grandma down, so she did her best to join in. 19 AMer a while, Devin said, “Why don’t you try, Kenzie?” 20 “Me?” asked Kenzie in shock. 21 “Yeah! It’s easy,” said Monique. “Just say the words like you mean them.” 22 “Okay,” Kenzie said tentaEvely. She was sEll nervous, but decided to give it a try. 23 Devin handed her a poem. Kenzie read the poem out loud, hoping the whole Eme that her voice wasn’t shaking. 24 When she finished reading, the other kids clapped and cheered. She thought they were just cheering her on to be nice, but then something truly surprising happened. Monique suggested that she perform with them at their next event. 25 “You must be kidding,” Kenzie said in disbelief. 26 “I’m not joking,” said Monique seriously. “You’re a natural!” 27 So, Kenzie agreed to perform with them. For the first Eme since she moved in with her grandma, she felt like she could see the light at the end of the tunnel. Things would be just fine. How did her grandma know this would make her feel beNer?
