LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

This is the time of year when we take a moment to evaluate

our success over the past year and identify areas where we

can improve.

Our last fiscal year presented us with the opportunity to

embrace key transitions in our organization. These transi-

tions are allowing us to breathe new life into the organiza-

tion through new ideas, new visions, and new strategies. As

we embark on our 31st year of helping pregnant and homeless women, in some ways,

this is a new beginning for us. You will see as you review this annual report, that in this

last year we increased our program services; these are the much-needed services that

you all helped us to provide directly to those who came to the Haven seeking shelter,

food, training, and prenatal healthcare.

As you read this annual report, we hope it will remind you of our successes and

energize you for the future as you envision the mission of The Haven of Grace in 2018

and beyond. For those of you who have tirelessly committed time and energy to the

success of this organization, I thank you. For the many of you who are new, I welcome

you to the Haven, and I look forward to working with all of you in the upcoming year.

Peace & Blessings,

Kimberly Brown, M.P.P.A., LNHA, CDP

LETTER FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

The year was 1988. Gas was 91 cents per gallon. George

H.W. Bush defeated Michael Dukakis in a presidential

election. Beetlejuice, Die Hard, and Coming to America

were popular in theaters. The Soviet Union dominated the

medal counts at the Winter Olympics in Calgary and the

Summer Olympics in Seoul. Also in 1988, after years of

prayer and planning, The Haven of Grace opened its doors

to shelter our first four homeless, pregnant women.

Much has changed in the world in the last 30 years, but The Haven’s mission has

remained. We are pleased to report that we have served more than 820 families in

those 30 years. This represents 820 babies born in a supportive, loving and healthy

environment. It also represents 820 women who returned to this community with new

skills and resources for a better life. I am so proud of the impact of The Haven’s past 30

years of service.

I am also excited as we look toward the next 30 years at The Haven of Grace. While our

mission has remained the same, our programs have evolved and will continue to do so

to meet the needs of our families. We have added our unique 10-year Aftercare

program, transitional housing apartments, and an in-house therapist to help our

families navigate the trauma of homelessness. I am confident that the team of experts

at The Haven will keep us on the leading edge of service to homeless, pregnant

women and their children. The successes of our past and our future are only possible

with a network of support. If you are receiving this annual report, you are part of that

network! I thank you for your past support and hope you will continue to participate in

the life-changing work of The Haven of Grace.

from St. Peter’s

Episcopal Church,

‘If God wants this

to work, it will

work!’ So

congratulations and thanks to you all:

board members, donors, and

especially staff members for carrying

on this God-inspired mission for 30

years!”

I came to The Haven of Grace when I

was almost seven months pregnant

with my first child. It was 2005 and I

was 24 years old, homeless, and in a

very hopeless place. I knew I had to

get it together for my child.

I used my time at The Haven to do just

that. I completed the program, found

a job, and moved into transitional

housing within four months of giving birth. While in transitional housing, I

obtained Certification in Biotechnology through The MET Center

(Metropolitan Education and Training), in partnership with St. Louis

Community College. By my daughter Giselle’s first birthday, I was preparing

to move into my own place. I was very focused and determined to prove to

myself and to the world that I was more than just another baby mama.

Since my days at The Haven, a lot has changed. I

began an entertainment career in 2012. I am now a

stand-up comedian, actress, author, motivational

speaker, and entrepreneur. I have been featured on

various media outlets as an entertainer. My latest

accomplishment is publishing my first book, From Baby Mama to Business Mogul, which was released

in May.

I’m working hard to become a household name in

entertainment, as well as an inspiration to young girls

and single mothers all over the world.

Page 7: MORE THAN A PLACE… IT’S A PROMISE FOR TOMORROW.€¦ · More than families served Providing Safe Haven for 30 years “From day one, Oct. 1, 1988, I said to our small group from

Remember when you left the home you

grew up in to move into your first apartment?

It’s likely that your parents helped you in

some way. They may have given you several

items of used furniture, provided the securi-

ty deposit, or purchased new dishes or

cleaning supplies. They may have even

continued to act as a safety net when you

needed groceries or gas money.

The young women who come to The Haven pregnant and homeless do not

currently have this kind of parental or other family supports. They are

completely on their own to support themselves and their child.

This is why donor and volunteer support is essential to the mission of The

Haven of Grace. We provide a place to live, educational programs, and

long-term support to break the chain of generational poverty.

Families begin a new path – one that leads to independence, stability, and

self-sufficiency, eliminating the need for government support. Each young

woman helped by The Haven of Grace becomes a stronger member of our

community and eventually can begin giving back to those who helped her

move forward.
