Depression is a condition of mental disturbance,

typically with lack of energy and difficulty in

maintaining concentration or interest in life. When one is depressed, they are in severe

despondency and dejection, accompanied by

feelings of hopelessness and inadequacy.

Depression can occur in anyone at any age. Thisillness occurs following a great devastation inones life or with repeated emotional

putdown/abuse.

Symptoms may include, but not limited to:

feeling depressed, being indecisive, amoral,

feeling really depressed, lacking motivationoverall, sleep trouble such as insomnia or

narcolepsy, appetite changes and so on.

What is Depression?

Historically, Depression is one of themost misdiagnosed diseases in thecourse of history. During the greatscientific times of the Middle Ages, adepressed person was thought to becursed by witches. Moreover, now

towards the 1700s and towards thepresent, the intelligent human racetold people who suffered fromdepression to either count theirblessings, (if they were religious), orto simply get over it. Doctors at thetime either were unable and/orunwilling to treat depressionsuccessfully. Many famous peoplefrom the past were now known tohave suffered from depression. (i.e.Vincent Van Gogh, Ernest Hemingway,Isaac Newton Abraham Lincoln andmany more).

Officially known, there are many chemicals in the brain. Each chemicalis needed for different types of emotional responses. The mainchemicals that are affected by depression however, are serotonin, dopamine and histamine.

The serotonin chemical is needed for the control of appetite and theblood clotting factors. When one is depressed, serotonin is directlyaffected, (although each person is affected differently due to genetics).Levels in serotonin will fluctuate, depending on each person, and ispossibly fatal.

The dopamine chemical is one of the strongest chemicals known toman and it is widely regarded as the strongest naturally produced

chemical in the human body. Dopamine is the bodys feel goodchemical which is triggered when a response of either accomplishment, caused from the insula part of your brain, or when one is in a state of pure shock and are flooded in order for one not to die from shock. Thischemical in itself is more potent than any painkiller or any type of medicine could ever be. And when someone is in depression, thischemical is completely wiped out of the nervous system and in thebody.

Finally histamine; this chemical basically reacts when one is allergic to asubstance. It sends out responses that shows up upon the bodyphysically. Depression causes a drop in levels of histamine and one ismore able to be affected to allergic substances and can result in fatalconsequences.

Now what chemically causes depression? The power of the human mindis powerful, so powerful that if you think it enough, you can developsymptoms of whatever you think you may have. In the case of depression, the insula, which interprets human emotion, is not feeling

too acceptable emotionally and begins to send less and less signals forthe neurotransmitters that give us feelings.

The brain is a remarkable thing. However depression inhibits the brain andits functions by almost 65-80%. Neurotransmitters, the frontal, temporaland parietal lobes, hippocampus and the cerebral cortex are some of manyparts of the brain that are affected by depression.

Originally, when depression had became more of a prominent issueand area of study, patients were given MAO inhibitors. MAO

inhibitors were, like many great scientific discoveries, found byaccident while experimenting with patients with tuberculosis. It wasrevealed that the MAO inhibitor inhibited the enzyme that allowedthe persistence and buildup of serotonin and dopamine inhibitors. However with any other drug; there were side-effects. MAO inhibitorsinhibited MAO which is a chemical that converts tyramine, a chemicalfound in many foods, into harmless molecules. However, with theMAO inhibited, tyramine persisted with a buildup, which then led topatients having permanent heart damage, liver failure and kidneyshut-downs. People facing depression and being treated with MAOinhibitors were then put on strict-regimen diets in order to counteractthe effects of the inhibitor.

Due to the dangerous side-effects of the MAO inhibitors, serotoninreuptake inhibitors were developed. (i.e. Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft andothers). These drugs stopped the serotonin from easily beingreabsorbed by the neurotransmitters, thus causing serotonin tobuildup more and increase. These are now more prominently foundin treating depression patients due to less amounts of side-effects.

For the most severely affected patients, tricyclics have been

historically prescribed. These drugs are rarely found due to the factof their severe side-effects. Tricyclics is basically a hail-mary inlaymens terms. They are given to inhibit the reuptake of serotoninand inhibit the neurotransmitters inorder to increase levels of bothchemically. These are given when none of the other anti-depressantsor SSRIs dont work. The side-effects include, and are not limited to:affecting heart rate, blood pressure, causing weight gain and aconstant feeling of drowsiness.

Due to the fact that virtually anyone canbecome depressed, drugs are avoided tobe prescribed to kids and teens. This issimply because children and teens havenot fully developed, yet alone their brains.A brain to be fully developed occurs

approximately at the age of 25. Any sortof drug prescribed allows for tolerance, dependence and addiction to occur. Thisis why a doctor may prescribe a youngpatient to partake in exercise, a healthyand perfectly safe way to rebuildserotonin, dopamine and histamine levels.Another way to help treat depression is tosimply eat high in protein and carbs. These types of foods cause the pancreasto secrete more insulin and differenthormones which causes eventually abuildup of more serotonin in the body.

Objective Five: Natural Treatments for

Depression
