…and welcome to the November edition of the Moreton Hall Directory.I can’t quite believe it’s only just over 8 weeks until Christmas, where has the year gone? As I write this I am trying to get the motivation to start my Christmas shopping, as usual I will probably be the one rushing around the shops on Christmas Eve getting the last minute bits!

If you have packed away the BBQ and the patio set, you may want to think again... It may be colder and darker now we have left the summer behind, but why not invest in a Chimnea or Firepit so that you can still enjoy the outdoors this winter? On page 35 we have all the information on this latest garden craze. We also have a health and safety article on page 52 to help keep you and your family safe if you’re thinking of holding your own fireworks display this year.

Our fashion pages on 40-41 are definitely getting me in the mood for the party season, and I love the purple theme – it’s the ‘new black’ so I hear. There’s plenty of key pieces that will look great in your winter wardrobe.

So I hope you enjoy cosy nights on the sofa this month, and snuggling up in front of the fire now the clocks have gone back and see you in December!

hello...

Purple creepers, £45.

With embellishment, embroidery and luxuriousfabrics featuring so prominently on thecatwalks for AW12, the colour purple was

bound to emerge as a major new season trend.Purple conjures up connotations of wealth, royalty, decadence, and is thus the perfect colour tocomplement such a maximalist season, as itlooks equally great in rich, dark florals as it doesin luxe jacquard, velvet, suede and fur.

Christopher Kane’s AW12 offering was allabout bold, clashing purple prints, showcased on a purple catwalk, while at Erdem, an understatedpurple flower print added interest toblack lace and leather and stood outin a collection dominated by thebrand’s signature edgy florals. Purplewas one of the many jewel shadesfeatured on the Chanel AW12 runway, with crystals contrasting with richfabrics to create a futuristic vibe. At MiuMiu and Prada, purple featured in boldoptical prints, resulting in a retro yet verymodern feel, while Gucci showcasedthe shade in dramatic oversized furs.

The AW12 runways showed us theversatility of purple, but the constantfactor was the colour’s ability to enhancea look with a mysterious, transformativepower. Dark, moody winter florals aregiven even more depth as a result of theshade, as shown by Warehouse andHobbs London. And don’t worry aboutlooking too matchy-matchy: the key isto wear the colour all over in variousprints and fabrics, and adding extraaccents of purple with accessories is aclever way to further enrich your look. Tryteaming Marks & Spencer’s velvet-lookmaxi dress with What’s About Town?’sgorgeous cocktail ring for very regal results.

TREE MAINTENANCEYou may have noticed that the council have been carrying out tree and hedge maintenance. This work is carried out on a rolling contract basis, so if you have a problem with trees in your area please let me know. Some trees have a preservation order on them, which means we need to get special permission to do anything to them. Lots of trees were planted by the developers when they built the houses but the developers have gone and the council have to maintain the trees and that’s not an easy job.

A very emotional lady called me last week, her cat had been poisoned by someone using antifreeze. This happened just off Airfield Road. Her cat came home looking as though she was drunk, the lady took the cat to the vet and after an examination it was found that the cat had been fed food laced with antifreeze. Not only did the lady loose her cat but it cost her £400 in vet fees, be careful if you see anything or if it happens tell the police.

Until next time, Frank

There has been a lot in the press lately about these loan companies, interest rates up to 1,400%, the government are looking into this and trying to stop them. One young man borrowed £400 but ended up owing £9,000. Another lad committed suicide because he got so deep in debt.

PAY DAY LOANS

We still have a problem with parking and it is very difficult to see what we can do about it.

PARKING I have a meeting with other councillors and an officer from the council next week and I will let you know the outcome. I have spoken to some people who work in and around the shops; I asked them why they did not park on the old community centre car park. The answer I got was “I am not walking all that way in the dark” it is only 150 yards from Tesco. The lights don’t go off until 12 midnight and it’s quite well lit.Another parking problem is people parking across peoples driveways, whilst writing this I have had a phone call asking

what I could do for a lady where a car is parked across her drive all day. This is just bad manners, my wife came home to find a car parked on our drive, she parked behind this car and when the lady returned she gave my wife a mouthful for parking behind her. Please think before you park and have respect for other people’s property.

ANTI-soCIAl bEHAVIouROver the last month there has been a spate of anti-social behaviour in and around Lawson Place. The police have been called out and are now making their presence known; one person was caught stealing a case

of beer from Tesco. Drain pipes on the Youth Club have been pulled off. This is sheer wanton damage and costs to get repairs done. This kind of behaviour brings down the status and the feel good factor of the area.

I have been asked to remind drivers of their responsibility when approaching a zebra crossing. Pedestrians have priority and cars should stop and give way.

The weather has turned decidedly cold, the leaves are finally falling from the trees, November is upon us, and another year is almost at an end. And, what a year it has been - a wonderful Jubilee, Olympic Games and, of course, the Paralympics Games.

However, we still have much to celebrate on Moreton Hall. It is fantastic to see all the young people from Abbots Green School, Sebert Wood School and the Moreton Hall Brownies supporting the Samaritan’s Purse Shoebox Appeal on the Sunday the 4th. At the time of going to press, we don’t know how many shoeboxes in total will be sent out but we will let you know in the December issue. It was wonderful to see the whole community come together to help so many children this Christmas. Thank you all for your kindness and generosity.

Before we start focussing on Christmas, I would like to draw your attention to a healing day we are holding on 17th November. “Finding the Jesus you always longed to meet” will be run by the Christian Healing Mission, who are a well respected Church of England organisation. Here is a great opportunity for people to find lasting relief from sickness and the inner peace of Jesus.

I hope you don’t mind our Christmas advertisement on the other page. I would particularly draw your attention to the Christingle Service on Sunday 2nd December where all the money goes to the Children’s Society and every child who attends receives a Christingle. It is a really super occasion and we hope that you will attend. Of course, there will also be our ever-popular service of Nine Lessons and Carols and the Crib Services.

As we all know, it is so easy to get swept along in the rush of events and then Christmas itself can be such a complicated process we can easily miss its true meaning. So as November progresses, try to remember that there is a special season called Advent which begins

in November and leads up to Christmas. It is when the Christian church sets aside some time to prepare itself for the end of the year. We remind ourselves that, out of faithfulness to an angel’s promise, a young woman and her new husband travelled all the way to Bethlehem to fulfil God’s purposes. The child born to them there not only saved the world, but also was God incarnate, the God who came to be with you.

Take a few moments to look back over 2012 before it has gone and give thanks for all the good things that have happened to you and to our nation. Then take a few minutes to draw breath and look forward to Christmas; its true meaning and to give thanks for all that lies ahead. In that moment of pausing and quietness you can become aware of the Presence called God who goes with us all, who loves us and longs to change us.

With every good wish,

Yours sincerely Reverend Jonathan Ford Minister of Christ Church Moreton Hall

ecently, due to a slight void between

old and new, I found myself carless. This was not really accidental as I had already decided that it would be better to have a gap rather than to have an unnecessary, not to mention costly, overlap.

I am a reasonably familiar sight on my bicycle around Moreton Hall, but of late it has usually been in a rather unwieldy form whereby I have to accommodate my 2 young children as well. I think it was around June time I realised that, now they are not so little, having one on a child seat at the back and his smaller sister on a rather nifty front fitting seat between my arms, was creating a perilously high centre of gravity and for the three of us to go out together was going to require a rethink.

My eldest, although a proud owner of his first bike, is still basically limited to 20yrd bursts on flat straight paths, so he definitely needed to remain ‘attached’. My second born loves the bike so much, she certainly was not going to accept being left at home. A successful look on the internet, and a few days later and the eagerly awaited parcel arrived. Admittedly, thanks to the poorly translated instructions (and I use that word loosely) it took nearly as long to assemble. However, at last the bike trailer was ready for its maiden voyage, complete with randomly found pirate flag!

The kids love sitting side by side, chatting away, putting the world to rights as only a 2 & 4 year old can -“clip clop neigh!”, “yes, that’s right it’s Rea the horse, she’s having a poo!”. It really does make for an

entertaining ride, and it’s been a roaring success. Needless to say, the hill climb up from town is hard, very hard. But the ‘king of the mountains’ jersey is well worth the lactic acid burn, as the view from the summit on the A14 bridge makes it all worth while! If you’re lucky you’ll even get a toot from a passing sugar beet lorry, one thing I can pretty much guarantee you wont get in the Tour de France.

Now, the trailer disconnected, I am using the (rather old and very cheap) bike to get me to and from work whenever possible. The feeling of beating the rush hour traffic on two wheels is so good that I barely even notice my new car, sat on the drive, probably wondering what it’s done to upset me so quickly. Just wait until I get a family bike rack – then it’ll wish it never gave me that look.

The Cycle King

This term our whole school project is entitled “Hubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble” and the school has therefore been transformed with displays of witches, wizards, potions, cauldrons and scientists!

We have been learning lots, and in particular, lots about Science. Our children in Reception, Daisy and Buttercup Classes, have also been making their very own magic.

The class teachers, performed a special magic show for the children and explained how wands are used for wishes and tricks. The children were absolutely wowed!

“Mrs Daisy can REALLY do magic” exclaimed Alfie, and Ruby just wanted more asking “Can we see another trick please?”

The classes then went on to produce their very own magic bubble wands! The children shared their wishes out loud (using their best clear speaking skills!) and then blew magic bubbles and made their wishes together. Wishes included flying a rocket to space, becoming a ballerina, being a fairy and going to a ball!

The children and teachers at Abbots Green are still patiently waiting to see if their wishes come true!

Moreton Hall WI NewsOctober has not started for us with the “mellow fruitfulness.” Instead we took a turn back into history with our speaker Fran Saltmarsh. Fran will be known to some members from her time in office as National Vice Chair and Chair of Denman College.Fran is a keen seamstress, among her other interests, and with a friend developed her love of history through costume. Fran set the scene in Henry VIII’s time, relating some of the history of that time but centred on the famous Six Wives! Fran showed us how from a “standard” costume of over dress, underskirt and sleeves, she could make “Six from One.” It was very interesting to see how simple changes altered the dress significantly for each of the Wives. The headdresses were very varied and presented to reflect the piety, flamboyance or simplicity of the wearer. We did learn of Henry’s less pleasant health issues, but this did not spoil our coffee and cake!

Moreton Hall’s Monthly

Nature Watch by Woodland Ways

Dunnocks are small brown birds with a smart grey head, found in many places in Moreton Hall. They’ve got slim beaks, unlike the chunkier beaks of sparrows. Look in the base of your garden shrubs, or in the base of hedges or woodlands with dense woody undergrowth, and the chances are you’ll see them scuttling about. Often they can be seen under bird feeders, picking up the scraps dropped by other birds.

Most of our garden birds are territorial in spring, with males singing to advertise their territory and deter other males from entering. Dunnocks do different. Dunnocks are territiorail all year round, not just in the spring. The chances are that the blackbird in your garden this month will be a different blackbird to the one you saw in spring,

but the dunnock in your garden this month will probably be the same one you have been seeing all year. Unusually, its not the male bird which defends the dunnock territory, but the female, making sure she has somewhere good for the spring.

Their social life is very varied, with sometimes one female nesting with two males, or sometimes one male nests with two females. Occasionally two females and two males will ‘pair’ up. Their nests contain four or five pale blue eggs, and each ‘pair’ will lay twice or three times during the season. Although this is a large number of chicks, not many survive to the next spring due to cat predation, food shortages in winter, and disease, amongst others. Putting bird food at the base of bushes can help them.

Moreton Hall’s Dunnocks

ENTERPRISING LANDLORD’S SERvICE SUPPORTS NEW TENANCIES A new service for letting agents and private landlords will be launched on Friday 2 November at the West Suffolk Landlords’ Conference, from 9.30am to 3pm at the Malthouse Project, 8 Elsey’s Yard, Risbygate Street, Bury St Edmunds St Edmundsbury Borough and Forest Heath District Councils recognised that private landlords and letting agents often need specific support in securing and maintaining tenancies with a wide range of prospective tenants. Together they have set up the West Suffolk Lettings Partnership, to provide this. The service has already signed up five private landlords and three letting agents and housed people from the waiting list, in some cases securing tenancies by lifetime deposit bonds – just one of the products offered. Darryl Durno, Landlord Liaison Officer, said“We knew that operating in the commercial housing market needed a different approach and it’s proving really successful so far, already creating eight new tenancies for people previously on the housing needs list. We are getting good feedback and look forward to introducing the service to even more landlords at the conference”. The first West Suffolk Landlord’s Conference is kindly sponsored by the Eastern Landlords Association. There will be speakers from the West Suffolk Environmental Health and Anglia Revenues Partnership and a free buffet lunch. Please email [email protected] or call Darryl on 01284 757637 if you are interested in attending.. Bury Bowl FC 1 Howards FC 4

Howard’s took the game to Bury Bowl in the first half at Symonds Road as Bowl looked to be giving their opposition far too much respect, not challenging enough to win the ball back when out of possession and not working hard enough as a team something which we had been doing sucsessfully the first few weeks. Bowl went 1-0 down early on then 2-0 down when the striker who looked to be offside managed to evade the back four and score well past the helpless keeper. Bowl got back into it straight away when after Bowl’s best move of the match lead to Atkinson squaring for Gardiner to slot home for his fourth of the season. Bowl were now playing well and really needed to score while on top, Atkinson went close again so did Stanford on the other wing. But as Bowl were going for the equaliser they were robbed and Howards made it 3-1. Even though the game was still in the balance Bowl had made the game too hard for themselves to pull back and it proved in the second half as Howards made it 4-1 early on and the Bowl attacks were coming to nothing, either with the keeper making the save or the chances going either side of the post! Bowl can draw some positives with the return of Simon Bowles looking ever as dangerous! Ed Beeton did return but then departed after a 40 minute cameo. Bowl still need to get a settled team, and again need to start taking the chances that they are creating, they also need to start working harder for one another, man of the match today Chris Hemingway with another superb high energy performance!

Chimineas became popular about 6 years ago and the fad went crazy. Since then the ‘Chiminea’ or ‘patio fire place’ has evolved into many different shapes and sizes. The most recent style is the patio fire pit. By a fire pit we mean an open container such as a dish or bowl that’s mounted on a stand. Like a campfire that’s contained on the bottom and sides but open on the top.

So what’s the Difference between a Chiminea and a Fire Pit?

The ChimineaA chiminea is basically the same as a pot belly stove that’s been in homes for hundreds of years. Look at them and they are basically the same in theory, the only difference is the shapes.

The Patio Fire PitYou can find fire pits of all shapes and sizes and configuration. You can find patio coffee tables with fire pits built into them as well as bar tops. The designers seem to have let their imaginations go wild. None the less the style you choose is basically up to you - the options are endless!

Fire PitsA fire pit is open. There is no chimney flue over the fire. The size of fire pits vary from 24” to 40”’s plus. This enables you to build your own fires. You can stack this bad boy up as far as the pit will hold. You will be able to enjoy the fire 360 degrees around the fire pit and you can burn regular size logs. Obviously though, you’d need a great deal of space to be safe.

Fire Pits vs. Chimineas?A chiminea is contained. The fire is in a bowl that has sides all the way up to the chimney. The fire is some what contained. This means you can’t burn large fires because the size of the chiminea bowl will dictate the size of the fire. Then when you do have a fire burning in a chiminea the fire is burning in a contained bowl that is usually 24” or so in diameter. The fire, the heat and the smoke goes out the chimney that shrinks in size. Like a funnel. This forces the heat rising from a large area to a smaller chimney where the heat will pick up momentum and the smoke will blow out the top with tremendous force. This blows the smoke into the air. It will also help keep your patio from getting too smoky. The chiminea also retains more heat.

Both products have a place. First, think about your back garden. Is it typically breezy? Does the wind blow more often then not? Then a chiminea might work better because you can turn the chiminea against the wind and the smoke and ashes don’t blow everywhere. A fire pit could blow ash and smoke right in your face.

A chiminea may add a little more character to your deck it’s also usually very decorative when not in use. Now think about this and visualise... It’s Saturday night, you start the fire pit with the kids and friends. You enjoy a wonderful night by the fire. It’s time to go to bed. You pour some water (or whatever) onto the fire to put it out. The fire goes out.

The next morning when you go out side you have this fire pit that looks like it’s been used! Now you have to either clean it, which is a task in itself or you can just put an attractive cover over. Which is fine. But you’ll want to do something because it’s not very attractive. With a chiminea you do the same thing but the next morning the clean-up is minimal if any at all.

Both are wonderful items if used safely. You can enjoy entertaining outside in the cool evenings and they make a great centre piece. Kids and adults will both love them!

Enjoy your garden in the chilly months ahead...

l Lawns may need a final cut depending on growth. After this check your garden mower and give it a spruce up or put it in to be serviced

l Clear fallen leaves from your garden lawn and pathways. Leaves left on a lawn for a few weeks will starve the grass of light and will lead to bare patches. One of the easiest ways of clearing leaves is with a decent mower.

l Plant out roses making sure you fill the hole with a mixture of bone meal and peat

l You can plant tulips and hyacinth bulbs.

Pauls Jobs for the MonthWha t to do in your ga rden in No v emberNovember is a good month for planting shrubs and trees. This is because you will cause less stress to a plant to move it when it is not in fruit or full flower, when it is dormant . Plants begin their period of winter dormancy when the daily mean temperatures fall below 6c (43F) and this usually occurs in East Anglia during the second half of November.

It is also for tidying your garden and “putting it to bed “ before the long winter ahead so make the most of any dry days.

VIOLASWith gardens looking a little stark and bare why not add some colour with

some Violas. Great for use in hanging baskets or as ground cover or in pots.

They are happy or shade conditions but really prefer to get as much of the

winter sunshine as is available so do well in pots. Violas produce a constant

succession of flowers, if one is damaged by the weather another soon opens.

As an alpine species by nature violas are very hardy.

Another reason why Violas are gaining in popularity as opposed to pansies

is due to their compact size a cluster of their small flowers looks far more

colourful than two large pansies. Secondly the flowers of many pansies are so

large that the petals simply do not have the strength to support themselves

and can drag in the dirt. They will continue to flower all winter as long as you

remember to deadhead them.

Pauls Plant of the Month

Page 37: Moreton Hall Directory November 2012, Issue 94

l Any bare patches of soil in the flower borders or vegetable plot can be dug over on good dry days. It is best to leave clay soils until next Spring.

l With the likelihood of wet and windy weather to come now is the time to do a garden check. By this I mean be prepared for any potential problems that might be caused by the weather by:- checking your fence posts to ensure they are not at the point of rotting off, sheds and gates have proper locks and latches , plant stakes are firmly in the ground are still supporting plants and outdoor taps are properly lagged.

l Now is the time to plant bare root plants. Or if you have been considering moving a plant now is the time to do this.

“The wild November come at last Beneath a veil of rain; The night winds blows its folds aside, Her face is full of pain. The latest of her race, she takes The Autumn’s vacant throne:She has but one short moon to live, And she must live alone.”- Richard Henry Stoddard, November

l For an early crop of broad beans next May plant seeds this month.

l When the leaves drop off your shrubs you can take hard wood cuttings of many plants such as :- dogwoods, buddleia, forsythia, kerria, philadelphus, weigela, berberis and pyracantha . Cut just above a bud of a healthy stem of about 8 inches, remove any side shoots and large leaves, dip in hormone rooting powder and plant in pots or in a sheltered area of your garden.

l Order some seed catalogues , they are usually free and you can then think of ideas for next year.

Ingredients4 medium baking potatoes

2 tbsp olive oil

25g butter

1 large onion , finely sliced

6 slices smoked streaky bacon, chopped

2 tbsp double cream

200g mixed good melting cheese, such as Reblochon, Raclette or Gruyère

chopped parsley, to serve

Method

1. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Prick the potatoes all over with a fork, then rub with half the oil, some sea salt and black pepper. Arrange on a baking tray and bake in the oven for about 1 hr 15 mins, until their skins are crisp and they are completely tender when prodded.

2. Meanwhile, heat the remaining oil and half the butter in a frying pan. Add the onion and gently cook for 15-20 mins until softened and golden. Remove from the pan and set aside, add the chopped bacon and fry until just crisp. Remove using a slotted spoon and place on kitchen paper.

3. Halve each potato lengthways (watch out, they will be hot), then scoop out most of the potato into a bowl, leaving a potato skin shell with a thin layer of potato. In the bowl, crush the potato with the remaining butter and the double cream. Season with salt and pepper. Fold through the onion, bacon, three-quarters of the cheeses and half the parsley. Spoon back into the potato shells and top with the remaining cheese. Transfer to the baking tray and return to the oven for 10-15 mins, until melting and golden. Sprinkle with the remaining parsley and serve with a sharply dressed crisp salad, if you like.

Moreton HallCommunity Centre @ the centre for u

The club recently held its Annual General Meeting and 40 members attended the meeting.

Mr Neil Grimwood resigned from the position of Chairman. Neil had been the Chairman for 5 years through some very difficult times. Everybody in the meeting showed their appreciation for all his hard work during this time. It just goes for us to add another BIG THANK YOU to Neil.

Mr Colin Houghton was voted in as the new Chairman. Mr Matt Taylor was voted in as Vice Chairman. Mr Nathan Mahoney Houghton was elected Treasurer. A Committee of a further eight people were elected.

The main item voted on during the AGM was a change in membership structure. From 1st January 2013 the Moreton Hall Community Club will offer a FREE MEMBERSHIP, available to anyone over the age of 18 years. Therefore we will welcome you all as members at any time during our opening times.

You will however, have the option to buy a membership. This will entitle you to discounts of all products at the bar, discounted hall bookings, discounted disco bookings with Phil the Rhythm and Sonic Sounds and catering for parties. We are in the process of negotiating a gym membership as well as other discounts from businesses in the town. Plus all paid members will be entered into our Sunday cash draw; you just have to be in the clubroom at the time the number is drawn to win the cash!

Welcome to the very first Moreton Hall Community Centre monthly editorial, a place to review what’s been happening

in the Club and Association.

Memberships for 2013 cost just £12.50 for a couple or family with children under 18 years and £6.25 for a single member aged over 18 years. Membership for the over 65’s will continue to be free of charge but will be classed as paid membership. Membership for 2013 is available from 1st November 2012.

The club sponsors a number of teams: 4 men’s darts teams, 3 ladies darts teams, a crib team, a Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning football team and 2 petanque teams.

Bingo is played every other Tuesday, the next date being 6th November. And of course we show live football on the big screen.

The club hosts a number of Saturday night events that include live music, themed nights, quiz nights, charity race nights etc. As we approach the festive season we have a lot of events organised. You can find out what we have planned in our advert in the MHD, on twitter and on Facebook.

As a resident of Moreton Hall you have a wonderful facility here so why not pop along and see us?! We look forward to telling you more in next month’s edition.

Paranormal activity 4 director: Henry Joost, Ariel schulmanlstarring: Katie Featherstone, Brady Allen

the demon unleashed by two young sisters continues its horrifying reign of terror! Back in 2007, the original, low-budget ‘Paranormal Activity’ scared the wits out of audiences around the world. its creepy home video-style footage revealed what happened to suburban couple Katie and Micah when they decided to record supernatural activity in their house. three years later, the sequel followed Katie’s sister Kristi as she and her husband set up CCtV cameras to watch over their newborn baby. last year’s ‘Paranormal Activity 3’ delved into the past to explore how the siblings came to unleash a demon as children in 1988. this fourth instalment in the hugely successful series arrives just in time for Halloween. Henry Joost and Ariel schulman, co-directors of part three, are returning. But the plot is being kept strictly under wraps so as not to spoil the surprise. We can be certain, however, that it’ll be scary as hell!

Looper director: Rian Johnsonstarring: Jeff Daniels, Bruce Willis, Piper Perabo, Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Joseph gordon levitt

Bruce Willis stars in a mind-boggling sci-fi action movie about a time-travelling assassin hired to kill his future self! One of the biggest problems facing any mobster is how to whack someone without leaving messy evidence behind. By 2072, the technology for time travel exists, even though it’s illegal to make use of it. this doesn’t stop the criminals, who employ assassins known as loopers. their job is to nip back 30 years to 2042, before the advent of time travel, and eliminate targets sent from the future. that way, there’s no evidence the victim ever existed. there’s just one rule: never let your target escape. But that’s exactly what happens when looper Joe (Joseph gordon levitt) finds that the man who’s just materialised in front of him is his future self (Bruce Willis)! From the director of cult hit ‘Brick’, ‘looper’ is a ferociously clever and exciting time travel thriller.

frankenweeniedirector: tim Burtonstarring: Winona Ryder, Martin short, Catherine O’Hara, Martin landau, Robert Capron

A wonderfully creepy comedy about a young boy who loses his beloved pet in an accident and decides to bring him back to life. Victor (Robert Capron) is a young boy who loves two things - monster movies and his pet dog sparky. When sparky is tragically killed in an accident, Victor is heartbroken, but refuses to accept that his beloved pet is gone. inspired by a science lesson at school, Victor attempts to bring sparky back to life using techniques seen in his favourite films. to his surprise (and everyone else’s), it works - but it is not long before his bolt-necked, home-sewn creation is wreaking havoc and striking fear into the local community. As the neighbours gather their torches and pitchforks, Victor must race to convince them that sparky is not a monster, but the same loyal pet he always was. Using the same-stop motion animation that he championed in ‘A nightmare Before Christmas’ and ‘Corpse Bride’, director tim Burton presents this off-beat, original and heart-warming tale of a boy and his dog.

Take PrecautionsGuy Fawkes Night will be celebrated but take care of yourself and each other. Use earplugs to protect your hearing. Simple off the shelf ear plugs would do the trick and for the little ones there are fantastic, inexpensive noise breaker headphones (as shown). Make sure that no one else is standing too close when you light the fuse of your fireworks. Most of those suffering hearing damage did not cause it themselves. They suffered the bad luck of being too close to the fireworks of others.

For more information on protecting your hearing, hearing loss or to purchase ear plugs please visit www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk

or call 0800 096 2637.

Ear Safety This Guy Fawkes NightThe days and nights around Fireworks Night are extremely hazardous to your ears. Fireworks can cost you your hearing.

For the lucky ones, their hearing returns, but many must live with their hearing loss or tinnitus for the rest of their lives. There is no cure for noise induced hearing damage. But you can easily prevent it.

Two thousandth of a second is all it takes for an exploding firecracker to put out the noise intensity to put your hearing at risk for life. The burst of noise is so short that you may not sense its true intensity.

*These conclusions were based on a study of hearing injuries related to fireworks celebrations in Germany, 2000.

Perhaps you love the thrill of fireworks, but you better watch out and be aware that*:

• 1 in 10,000 people suffer permanent hearing damage because of fireworks

• Young adults under the age of 25 are three times more likely than other groups to suffer fireworks related hearing damage

• Men are three times more at risk than women

According to my children, in a previous life I was probably a witch or medicine woman as I am always espousing the benefits of herbal teas, herbs in cooking and traditional herbal remedies for many ailments. They took the mickey out of me recently for buying yet another book entitled “grannies remedies”. But actually Herbal Medicine is one of the longest established and most respected complementary therapies and many of the powerful drugs prescribed today are made from the active ingredient in a herb.

In your kitchen cupboard and garden you will have many herbs and possibly some herbal teas but did you know that herbs prescribed by a qualified Medical Herbalist can actually successfully treat many conditions.

We are going to look at two.

1. herBs for stressStress can be caused by many issues, whether personal or professional in origin many situations can add to the stress load of our daily lives. If the stress is on-going and prolonged then it starts to take a toll on the body and many health issues can develop. To increase our ability to deal with stress there are a group of herbs we use called

adaptogens. These enhance our resistance to stress allowing us to withstand stressful times without damaging our health. They reduce initial stress reactions, increase stamina and conserve energy thus providing protection against long term stress and adrenal exhaustion.

The following herbs are adaptogens that are used to help the body increase it’s ability to cope with stress;

korean GinsengPanax ginseng improves well-being and general performance whilst under stress, including memory, concentration and stamina. It also restores and strengthens the immune response.

siberian GinsengEleuthrococcus senticosus increases vitality and one’s ability to counteract stress. It is especially useful where prolonged stress and overwork result in exhaustion. It enhances the immune system so helps prevent illness and infection that can occur when the body is depleted due to stress.

reishi mushroomGanoderma lucidum as an adaptogen enhances the body’s resistance to stress, anxiety, fatigue and trauma.

This issue we look at the benefits of herbal medicine and how you can use herbs to treat many illnesses.

It improves immune and cell function to prevent illness.

LiquoriceGlycyrrhiza glabra is a Western herb equivalent of the Asian adaptogens. It corrects the stress response via the adrenal glands, builds resistance to stress and is especially useful where fatigue is part of the picture.

2. herBs for anXiety or dePressioNEveryone experiences feelings of worry, unease, fear and panic at some point in their life. They can range from mild to severe and become a problem when they affect our ability to perform in our daily lives. Anxiety can affect our focus, concentration and sleep. Whether it is a specific worry or a general feeling, there are herbs which calm, support and allow us to regain control.

Depression is feelings of low mood, hopelessness, lack of energy, appetite changes, sleep problems, poor self-esteem and a whole range of symptoms that persist for several weeks or more. One in four people will be affected at some time during their life.It is a complex condition that needs a comprehensive treatment plan that can be worked through between patient and practitioner.

Whilst it is quite safe to use herbs in cooking and to drink herbal teas, you should NEVER SELF MEDICATE herbs. Always consult a qualified Medical Herbalist.

The remedies and advice suggested in this article are the personal opinion of the author. Please also inform your GP if you are planning to take any natural remedies and you are already on long term prescribed drugs. Always consult a qualified Complementary Practitioner, never self medicate.

By Carole Baker director, the self Centre

For mild anxiety and depression the following herbs can be helpful;

skullcapScutellaria lateriflora soothes tension and restores nervous system function. It is extremely useful in panic states, exhaustion and mild depression.

st john’s wortHypericum perforatum has restorative actions on the nervous system and is useful for tension, irritability and anxiety. It can be a useful herb in the treatment of mild to moderate depression and studies show it acts in similar ways to conventional antidepressants.

PassionflowerPassiflora incarnata has

sedating actions that calm the body and mind. It also relaxes muscles and the circulatory system so is especially relevant where there is associated tension and raised blood pressure.

Lime BlossomTilia europea induces relaxation where there is nervous tension. It is a specific herb for migraines and raised blood pressure that accompany anxiety states.

Lemon BalmMelissa officinalis is useful in the treatment of mild depression and anxiety. It reduces stress reactions and tension and is especially useful where indigestion is associated with stress.

Question 1 - How much sleep do you get a night?

Question 2 - How stressful is your current lifestyle on a scale of 1-10

Question 3 - HOW MUCH WATER DO YOU DRINK?

Do you know that our body is composed mostly of water which needs replenished regularly like any other nutrient. Our muscles are 75% water and our brains are over 80% which are two key ingredients in performance so they require optimal resources to function at their highest potential.

Many people confuse thirst for hunger so it is a good habit to respond to that first “hunger “ signal with a glass if water and see if you are still hungry. Water can act as a appetite suppressant by distending the abdomen which sends the message of fullness to the brain.

There are immediate symptoms of dehydration which include dry skin, constipation, fatigue and headaches. There are many disease conditions that result from long-term dehydration since all the body’s systems are dependent on adequate water, making the consequences of dehydration endless.

Most mid-afternoon energy slumps can be attributed to dehydration and reaching for a glass of water or two in the afternoon is a much healthier alternative to coffee or fizzy drink stimulants. The immune system will also be depressed which it lacks water, so we are more likely to catch a cold or the flu when we are weakened by dehydration.

So How Much Water Should I Drink???

As a general rule I will ask my clients to aim for between 2 - 2.5 litres of water a day, the volume will be different from client to client depending on genes, current water consumption and current fitness levels. If the body is not used to handling this much water it will need some time to adjust to the increased volume. Build your water consumption over a period of 2-4 weeks.

Paul Chek and Charles Poliquin who I learnt from have more specific sums into how to work out the exact amount of water you should consume a day. If you would like me to work this out for you feel free to contact me.
