(Copies available at the Extension Office upon request.)

4-H is for the Kids! As Fair approaches, we want to give a friendly reminder that the purpose of our 4-H projects is for youth to learn by doing. This means the goal is not the perfect end product, but the skills they learn along the way. Remember we are raising blue ribbon kids, not blue ribbon projects!

New in 2020 Virtual Demonstration Contest, Cake Decorating Contest, and Creative Cooks Contest, entries are DUE Tuesday, June 30! Look for details in this newsletter.

Reminder Important 2020 Fair Deadlines ALL Livestock Entry Forms, Livestock Record Books, IAFE form, Parent Permission forms and Fashion Revue entry forms DUE Wednesday, July 15!

Fair Books, 4-H Project Syllabus & Entry Forms The 2020 Morgan County Fair Book contains vital information about the fair –including a schedule of events, how to enter, contest rules, award sponsors, exhibit requirements, and department superintendents. Departments and class numbers can be found in the Fair Book for all 4-H, and livestock entries. Fair Books, 4-H project syllabi and entry forms are available in the Extension office. Livestock/Horse/Rabbit/Dog Entry forms should be used for: beef, sheep, swine, goats, dairy, showmanship and horse –and are in your Fair email.

2020 Morgan County Fair Book The Fair Book will be available on our website soon at https://morgan.extension.colostate.edu/morgan-county-fair/ or you may purchase a hard copy for $5.00 at the Extension Office.

Score Sheets Copies of the Score Sheets used for interview judging are available online or at the office. Call the office to let us know which score sheet you need so we will have time to make your copies or you can access on the State 4-H Website at http://co4h.colostate.edu/program-areas/state-fair-information/score-sheets/.

Record Book Help With Fair right around the corner, now is the time to start working on your record books! We know that they can be challenging at times, and this year will be offering one on one sessions for 4-H youth to bring in their record books and get help from agents or others, in completing their record books. This is open to any 4-H member regardless of their project, and will be held by appointment only. Please contact the Extension Office with any questions at 970-542-3540.

Display Boards and Record Covers The Extension Office has display boards (show boards) available for $5.50 each and green record book covers available for $3.50 each.

Cake Decorating Boards

Page 4: Morgan County 4 H Newsletter...Jul 07, 2020  · July 31st - August 6th 2020 Colorado State Fair August 28th –September 7th This is a special Morgan County Fair Edition of the 4-H

One exhibit requirement for Cake Decorating is the board for the cake MUST be a solid, sturdy board which is cut in the same shape as the cake. A typical cardboard cake board is not sturdy enough for fair exhibits and it can be difficult to get recycled cardboard which is thick enough. We recommend using 1/4 inch thick solid Masonite board. These can be obtained at a hardware store or lumber yard.

Manuals and Record Book Update If you have not received your manuals for projects, did you add or drop a project after February 3rd? Please contact the Extension Office to get your manual today! When you receive manuals/records, don’t set aside. Take time to read the manual NOW and the records to see what you need to do. Most projects require activities to be completed over a period of several months. You want to do more than just the one thing for your exhibit.

Virtual Interview Judging Day Catch-It animal participants have an interview already scheduled on Tuesday, July 28th, in-person. Catch-It Dairy participants, only 2nd year, will be interviewed. Catch-it animal participants must attend and CANNOT complete absentee judging. General & Natural Resources, Most Family Consumer Science and County Projects Wednesday, July 29, 2020, 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Foods and Nutrition projects will be judged on Thursday, July 30, 2020 one on one, in person at the Extension Office. All Family Consumer Science, General and Natural Resources, Dog, and County Projects will be interview judged via Zoom this year. The schedule has been set for you and will be available in the Family Fair email. Be sure to have your project AND your e-record completed for your interview. Show up on time, look nice and be prepared to discuss your project with a judge. If you have questions about interview judging, contact the Extension office today at 542-3540. Members must be interviewed with their projects to be eligible for unit champions. Members unable to be interview judged that day must make prior arrangements and complete an absentee interview form, available at the Extension Office. The form must be filled out and brought in to the Extension Office on or before, Monday, July 27, 2020. *If you cannot be there, Notify the Extension Office of your conflict and request the written interview question-are to include in your e-record — and leave project to be judged! e-Records – be sure to use the 2019-20 version of the e-Record. Note: There are specific record books for certain projects —including the supplement pages. Review the project requirements, score sheets, and include all necessary information or supplements: to see criteria the judges will use, go to the 4-H Website http://www.colorado4h.org Click on Projects & Record books. Notebooks or Record Binders: use any sturdy binder that has three fasteners or three rings to secure your records. Please put your name, age, project, and unit on the front cover. You may use a photo, if you like, too.

Projects Must Be Labeled All General and FCS project exhibits MUST be labeled with name, age, county, project and unit of the 4-H member. Information MUST be written or typed on a label and securely attached to your exhibit. Labels for Clothing & Heritage Arts are available from the Extension Office and must be attached at the garments or items. This will assist in identifying exhibit items and getting them displayed accurately. Example:

2020 Concession Stand The 4-H Fair concession stands have been cancelled due to COVID-19. It is still a good idea to review the Food Safety video and take the quiz, however it is not required for 2020. As you prepare for Fair . . . think about The fair is a celebration of your hard work and accomplishments through 4-H. Fair week is busy and stressful with less than adequate sleep. Remember to give everyone an extra measure of grace. The county fair is a great educational experience, that builds character, encourages re-sponsibility, and good sportsmanship. Take notice of the volunteers and leaders who are giving their time and effort so you may partici-pate. Say thanks or send a note to that 4-H leader, fair superintendent or fair board member in ad-dition to those trophy sponsors. Have a great Fair!

Fair Thank You Notes

ALL 4-H members are reminded, it is important to send a THANK YOU, to Award Sponsors and Livestock Buyers who support 4-H. Even a short invita-tion to last year’s sponsors to come to the Fair would be a nice gesture as well. All youth receiving any award and/or selling a market animal MUST turn in a stamped, addressed, ready-to-mail thank you note OR a copy of the

note if it has already been mailed before receiving premium money. Contact information for all awards is included on a label with the award. Premium money will be available at the Extension Office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. beginning Tuesday, August 18 until Wednesday, September 30. Thank you notes to sponsors and buyers are important, as we would not be able to have such a successful fair without their support!

Ribbons and Placing Premiums Ribbons and Placing Premiums will be available at the Extension Office August 18th thru Septem-ber 30th, 8 am - 4 pm. Please bring award and/or buyer thank you cards to the Extension Office to be checked off the lists, before you will receive your ribbon premiums.

4-H General, Shooting Sports and 4-H Family Consumer Projects (except for foods and cake dec-orating) marked State Fair eligible, must be returned to the Extension Office on Monday, August 17th, or it will NOT go to State Fair. Please take your ribbons and the judge’s comment sheets home with you. Leave ONLY the exhibit and record book. The food/cake exhibit portion of this dis-play must be back to the Extension Office by 12:00 noon Tuesday, August 18th. Be sure to read the county fair judge’s recommendations for changes or revisions in your exhibit or record. Score sheets will be available Tuesday, August 4 through Thursday, August 6 via email. During the fair is the perfect time to visit with Agents to review your judging sheet so you'll know exactly what should be changed before State Fair. After Fair, score sheets will be at the Extension Office beginning the week of August 10th. If your cake is eligible to compete at the Colorado State Fair, it is your responsibility to have the cake in a secure box for transport to Pueblo. The box and packing materials need to be able to support the cake in its travel to the State Fair. It should be able to withstand highway speed on rough roads, along with quick stops. You do not know what might happen. If you don’t have the cakes packed for shipment, they will not be taken to State Fair. Other projects that need secured in a box include Foods, Ceramics, and Model Rocketry. If you are worried about your project, it is best to pack it yourself.
