then, maybe a truck and tractor pull spon-sored by Full Pull Productions and USA-East,is what you want. Scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug.30, the pull will feature the ever popularSmoker Series.There will also be a limited pro/super farm

tractor, modified 4x4 trucks, semi-trucks, andan unlimited class. The modified 4x4 class isby invitation only and limited pro/super farmcompetitors will qualify through the USA-East point race.On Aug. 29, the fair will host the World’ s

Largest Demolition Derby presented by JMProductions. The derby harkens back to theolden days of demolition derbies, before cus-tom built engines and re-enforced framesbecame the norm. All cars remain factory,with glass and interior, minus the front seats,removed. Doors are chained shut with onlythe driver’ s door permitted to be welded shut.Although the noise level is much quieter, thelevel of destruction is the same.New to the 2014 fair is the Lucas Oil

Monster Truck Nationals at 7:30 p.m. Aug.27. Prior to the monster truck show, fans canvisit the pits during a free pit party beginningat 6 p.m.There will also be cheerleading demon-

strations during the afternoon on Aug. 27,followed by school band concerts on Aug.28. Other events include bike night beginningat 3 p.m. Aug. 28, harness racing, and thedraft pony pigiron derby.Maybe its the food and atmosphere that

Valley historypreservedat fairground

Standing at the south end of the WesternReserve Village is the church, which bringsfulfillment to the dream of fair directors BobRose and C. Gilbert “Gib” James. The dreamto preserve the Connecticut Western Reserveheritage of the Mahoning Valley by recon-structing a typical town began in 1965.

The church was originally designed duringthe 1800s and is currently used for weddingceremonies by those in the community. Thechurch and other village buildings are part of anon-profit foundation which maintains andcontinues the village preservation efforts.

The law office of Elisha Whittlesey wasthe first building moved to the village in1965. Whittlesey was the nation’ s first comp-troller or controller of the U.S. Treasury underPresident Zachary Taylor. He also helped inthe formation of the Mahoning County Agri-cultural Society, which is the founding organi-zation of the Canfield Fair. Whittlesey’ s lawpartner Judge Eben Newton served as the agri-cultural society’ s first president. The two menhad their law office built in 1840 on Can-field’ s Village Green.

Another building, the log cabin, was relo-cated from Slater Road in Butler Township,Columbiana County. Following the log cab-in’ s relocation, the railroad station, watch-man’ s tower and country store were added.

Handmade bricks salvaged from anotherCounty Home building are used throughoutthe village. Completing the village are therestored Carriage Museum and gazebo.

The entire village is laid out around an ovalgrassy area, also known as a commons, witheach building facing each other. This setup,including the brick walkways lining the area,was typical of early American towns.

TicketsOpening day tickets for the Canfield Fair will be reduced to $6 for adults (ages 13 andover); $4 for seniors (ages 62 and over); and $3 for youth (ages 7-12). Tickets on Aug.28 will be $8 for ages 18 and over and $3 for ages 13-17. From Aug. 29-31 prices are$8 for ages 13 and up and $3 for ages 7-12. Seniors, ages 62 and over, will be admit-ted for $6 on Aug. 29. On Sept. 1 tickets will be $2 for ages 7-12 and $6 for ages 13and up. Children ages 6 and under are free each day, with children ages 12 and underfree on Aug. 28. Passes for six or three days will also be sold through Aug. 26. Adultsix-day passes are $30, with three-day passes costing $15.

Heating up the country charts with hisgood ol boy charm is Justin Moore. Moore,the proud son of Poyen, Arkansas, has seenhis star rise with hits such as “Small TownUSA,” “Point at You,” and “Backwoods.”
