Lisbon Stone House MuseumA pair of old buildings
standing on Lisbon’ s southside provides a pathway to thepast filled with relics for visi-tors to see.The Lisbon Stone House
and Train Station serve as themuseum for the Lisbon Histori-cal Society. The two buildingshave been standing for wellover 300 years combined. The stone house was con-
structed between 1804 and1805 by Christian Smith, andthe land was given to him byLewis Kinney, the village’ sfounder, museum curator GeneKrotky said.Smith used the building as
both his home and as a placewhere travelers could find foodand bedding. The location ofthe tavern along WashingtonStreet is because it was theoriginal main street in Lisbon, not Lincoln Way, which nowserves that purpose, Krotkysaid.Sandstone used to build the
house was quarried just west ofLisbon, and in its early days, the building served as a home,a tavern, a court and achurch.”The house was prettymuch in continuous use fromthe time it was built until theearly 1940s,” she explained. At that point, the village
wanted to tear it down, as sol-diers were returning home fromWorld War II, cars werebecoming more common andparking in the downtown areawas scarce. But the society, along with a
woman named Ollie Rogersand four others, were able toacquire the building for thesociety’ s use.Over its early years, people
made several additions to thehouse, but the society removedthem and restored it to its origi-
nal state. Krotky said the housenow serves as a display of whata normal home in Lisbon mayhave looked like prior to theCivil War.The other building, a Victo-
rian Railroad station, was builtin the 1880s. About a centuryafter its construction, Conrail, which had bought the stationand the attached tracks, decidedto get rid of all its property. That included the station, andthe company donated it to thesociety. But ridding the company of
the building meant it had to be
moved, which the historicalsociety did, in 1986, from itsoriginal Maple Street home toits current location on Wash-ington Street. The first floor of the station
contains displays of the vil-lage’ s history.”The purpose ofthe displays there is for the edu-cational, business and culturalhistory of Lisbon,” Krotkyexplained. One exhibit will take visi-
tors back to old Shelton’ sGrove, which sits along thebottom of the ski slope on stateRoute 45 and was the site of
many picnics and recreationalactivities for village churchesand fraternal organizations indecades past. The old railroadran along the creek at the bor-der of the grove, she explained, giving the station a historical tieto the grove.Betty Bailey, Marjory Winn
and Bob Winn, who now livein the grove, donated informa-tion, pictures and several arti-facts, like buttons and oldcoins, that have been droppedthere over the years.“The kind of things a person
would be likely to drop at a pic-nic,” Krotky described theitems. The lower level of the build-
ing serves as a small office andstorage space for the society.Other items on display at the
buildings include a bookcaseused in the law office of EdwinM. Stanton, President AbrahamLincoln’ s secretary of war; amail delivery buggy with life-size horse, and an iron stovemade in the 1800s at an earlyiron blast furnace west of Lis-bon.Both buildings are open for
tours, but visitors are asked tocome to the train stationbecause the other buildingremains locked if no one istouring it. During those hours, members of the Historical Soci-ety can also answer questionsabout genealogy and provideinformation about buildings inthe village, for research papersor for other reasons. The society is always look-
ing for new members, Krotkysaid, and anyone interested insigning up can call 330-424-9000 and leave a message withtheir name and phone number.More information on the socie-ty is also available at its websitewww.lisbonhistory.org.

The Lisbon Stone House, top, and Train Station, bot-tom, serve as the museum for the Lisbon HistoricalSociety. The two buildings have been standing forwell over 300 years combined.
When pottery was king, thekings of pottery lived inimposing homes outfitted withall the amenities, and the EastLiverpool abode of potterymagnate Cassius C. Thompsonwas no exception. The C.C. Thompson Pot-
tery operated on River Road(near the current BroadwayWharf), with a portion of thatbrick building still standing. The Italianate style home
was built by Thompson in1876, a “pattern house,”which was built from a patternbought by the family whichthen chose how the interiorwould be finished. The EastLiverpool Historical Societywhich now owns the home. The three-story home origi-
nally fronted on Third Streetbut when the large porch wasadded in 1900, the familyused 300 Walnut St. as itsaddress.Only the Thompson family
ever lived in the grand home. After C.C. Thompson died, hiswife and three children contin-ued to reside there, and his son,Dale, lived there his entire lifebut never had any children. When the new four-lane
highway was built in the1970s, Dale Thompson madeprovisions for the house to
become property of the histori-cal society upon his death andthat of his wife.He established a trust fund
to maintain the home.Customary to affluent fami-
lies of the time, the Thomp-sons had servants but no live-in help.Today, restored to itsVictorian-era splendor, thehome is open for tours, featur-ing furnishings once used bythe Thompsons and familymemorabilia. Many of C.C. Thompson’ s
family members lived acrossThird Street which is nowunderneath the highwaybridge, but as their seven Vic-torian homes were sold one byone, parts would be relocatedto the Thompson mansion. For this reason, some fea-
tures of the restored home maynot be original to the house, but most of the furnishingswere used by the C.C. Thomp-son family. The house is decorated for
each season, including Christ-mas, and a collection of DavidBlythe paintings featuring por-traits of early East Liverpoolcitizens are on display at alltimes on a rotating basis asthey are restored.Adding to the home’ s ele-
gance is a stone wall, wrought
iron fence and gates that sur-round the property.Thompson House is listed
on the National Register ofHistorical Places. The home is open for tours
during the Tri-State Pottery
Festival and over the Christ-mas season, with other toursavailable by appointment, which can be arranged by call-ing historical society PresidentTim Brookes at 386-5964 athis law offices.

The idea for a museum hon-oring one of the city’ s mostfamous native sons was con-ceived in 1996 by Pat Russell, the wife of local businessmanJim Russell.
The former Notre Damecoach agreed as long as themuseum also served as a hall offame recognizing the accom-plishments of men and womenfrom the upper Ohio Valley.
In January 1998, the deedto the bank was turned over toHoltz on behalf of the East Liv-erpool High School AlumniAssociation and in February ofthat year, teh Lou Holtz/UpperOhio Valley Hall of Fame wasformed.

Local sports are well repre-sented in photographs, artifactsand even game tapes.
What was once the bank’ svault now serves as the displaycase commemorating one ofthe area’ s most notoriousevents: the Oct. 22, 1934shooting death Oklahoma bankrobber Charles Arthur “PrettyBoy” Floyd. The old log house thatgreets visitors to East Palestinecoming in from the west con-tains various treasures and keysto the village’ s founding days, but the most historic thing ofall may be the building itself.
The log house was con-structed around 1840 andowned by the East PalestineArea Historical Society, whichuses it as a museum and a cen-ter of operations. The societywas formed in 1974.
According to the society, one of the earliest residents ofthe house was Dr. RobertChamberlain, who moved tothe county at the age of 20 andestablished East Palestine’ sfirst medical practice, whichlasted 30 years.
Chamberlain was also a sur-veyor for the Ohio and Penn-sylvania Railroad, establishedthe first store in town andbecame the first postmasterafter the post office was estab-lished in 1836.
While the house now over-looks Village Park, its originalhome was 65 Meadow Lane, which is now the corner ofWest Main and Walnut streets.According to the society, thehouse was first moved up thestreet sometime between 1876and 1886 and it was ultimatelymoved, log-by-log, to its cur-rent location at 555 BaconAvenue in 1979.
Items on display in themuseum’ s two floors andbasement come from the peri-od between 1890 and 1930and have some ties to the vil-lage, although a few wereincluded for their historical val-ue.
The first floor is decoratedin quite a cozy fashion withpaintings by local artists hang-ing above the fireplace and
glass cases displaying classicpieces from local potteries. One item that stands outagainst the traditional livingroom environment is a peanutcart once used by Art Blower, who made a living sellingpeanuts in East Palestine for 50years.
On the second floor are afew racks of military uniformsdating back to the AmericanCivil War and dresses fromeras past, all donated by locals, and in the basement are a vari-ety of coal mining and con-structions tools, including awooden mallet used to con-struct the house itself.
The log house is believed tobe the first museum ever in thevillage and draws attentionfrom residents and travelers.

Twelve-year-old Zach Murray of Salem reads a gravemarker as he walks through Woodsdale Cemeterydecorating the graves of veterans.
Nestled in the woods ofColumbiana County, followingthe tracks of the former Erie &Lackawanna Railroad, is theLittle Beaver Creek GreenwayTrail, a 12-mile long blacktoppaved trail connection Lisbonto Leetonia.
Riders or walkers can rest atthe historic Centennial CoveredBridge, the Shelton’ s Groveticket station, or at one of thepicnic areas located along thetrail.
Also prominently featuredis North Fork of the LittleBeaver Creek, one of Ohio’ snationally designated scenicrivers. The creek flows serene-ly along the trail, althoughheavy rains in 2004 causedmajor damage to the trail. Dur-ing the flooding county engi-neers discovered a 30-footdeep washout near the Centen-nial Covered Bridge. The dam-age was repaired soon after theflooding with riders once againable to travel the entire lengthof the trail.
Once ending at state Route344 in Leetonia, the trail nowtravels into Washingtonvilleand is scheduled to be extendedacross state Route 14.
Ideas for the trail began in1990 when a hiking trail fromdowntown Leetonia to theCherry Valley Area was pro-posed. As talks progressed,John Roose of the LeetoniaParks Department approachedAllen Dickey to donate his 10miles of the former railroad, which he did. The final mile orso was donated by various indi-viduals and organizations, including Richard Williams, the Boy Scouts, Conrail Corp.and Jim Hill.
Of the 11 miles originallysought, all but around 300 feetowned by Stephen Corffee,
were acquired. The portionowned by Corffee was redirect-ed along St. Jacob-LogtownRoad. These chunks of landwere sold over to theColumbiana County Park Dis-trict, which became the localsponsoring agency in 1992.
With negotiations stillunderway, the park district helda “Pulling of the GoldenSpike” ground breaking cere-mony in 1994. It would takeanother six years for the trail tobe completed. Riders could
officially take to the trail onSept. 15, 2000 when the rib-bon cutting and dedication ofthe Little Beaver Creek Green-way Trail, Allen DickeyBranch, was held. Since itopened, the Greenway Trailcontinues to draw riders andwalkers from areas near andfar.
A map of the trail is avail-able at www.bicycletrail.com.

Columbiana Log House MuseumThe Historical Society of
Columbiana-Fairfield Town-ship is continuing theirfounders’ vision of preservinglocal history, and celebratingyet another milestone this year.
That history is being pre-served in the Log House Muse-um, located on the Square inColumbiana the last 40 years.Constructed in the 1920s —more than 30 years before thecreation of the society —thebuilding was later donated bythe Barrow family to the LogCabin Committee.
Nora Salmen, curator of themuseum, said the goal of hav-ing a museum was realizedthrough the donation of thebuilding.
“ It was dedicated inNovember of 1975 to serve asColumbiana’ s headquarters forthe national bicentennial cele-bration in 1976. It was thenturned over to the HistoricalSociety in 1977, to serve asour museum, our first officialmuseum,” she said.
This year marks the 40thyear the museum has beenlocated on the Square.
The society uses the LogHouse as a meeting place andmuseum. An annex was addedon in 1978, and features awide variety of items, includ-ing a central display that
changes every few years. The remainder of the muse-
um showcases military itemsand uniforms from the CivilWar, World War I and WorldWar II, pottery manufacturedin Columbiana, dolls, furnitureand 10,000-year-old mastodonbones discovered at FirestoneFarms.
“The members have been avital part of maintaining andimproving the museum andmeeting the needs of the socie-ty with their work, interest andsupport,” Salmen said.
The origin of the Societydates back to early 1953, whenColumbiana Ledger EditorWayne Paulson and business-man Roy Guy met to discussthe possibility of organizing ahistorical society.
Salmen has said these men“conferred with area societiesto get ideas and shortly after, ameeting with interested peoplewas held at the library. Theyestablished the historical socie-ty and elected officers.”
The first public meetingwas called on Aug. 24, 1953,
with 34 in attendance.According to Salmen, the
purpose was to preserveColumbiana and FairfieldTownship history and ultimate-ly to have a museum wheredocuments, papers, mementoesand artifacts would be dis-played and preserved.
The Log House Museum isopen June, July and August onFridays and Saturdays from 2-4 p.m. and for events takingplace in Columbiana. Specialtours can be arranged by call-ing 330-482-2983.

Opening on Aug. 13, 1999, the Burch-field Homestead Museum, memorializes notonly painter Charles Burchfield, but theSalem of old. Prior to its opening in April,1999, the home was listed on National Reg-ister of Historical Places.
Burchfield grew up on Salem’ s EastFourth Street from ages 5-28. It was duringthis time that he discovered his love of paint-ing, using the views from his windows. These works include paintings of the build-ing’ s downtown, the homes that lined hisstreets and nature that surrounded Salem.Paintings even depict the people in his sev-en-member family living in his childhoodhome.
As museum visitors stroll through thehome and peer out its windows, they can stillsee what Burchfield saw and painted in someof his early watercolors.
Burchfield shows these family and earlySalem images in a well-celebrated fantasystyle. In some ways, the town has notchanged all that much since those days when
Burchfield was learning to put his brush intopaints and create masterpieces.
The Burchfield Homestead Society iscontinuously working to renovate the Burch-field home to how it was when the painterlived there in about 1917, the year he report-edly painted about 400 paintings. Societymembers worked from a floor plan drawn byBurchfield that was housed at the Burch-field-Penney Art Center in Buffalo, N.Y.
The restoration also included replicatingthe 1913 garden Burchfield described in hisjournals.
Along with restoring the home to its1917 splendor, the society replicated Cur-rently, the museum features over 80 paint-ings and some 40 family photographs.
Tours are 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sun-days from mid-May until the end of August. It is located at 867 E. Fourth St. Admissionis free, but donations are always welcome.

Columbiana County FairWhether it’ s late July or
early August, the ColumbianaCounty Fair seems to draw res-idents from Columbiana andsurrounding counties out of theair conditioning and into thesummer heat. While walking through the
heat, fairgoers are treated to thesmell of freshly deep friedfrench fries and corn dogs, thesweet aroma of cotton candyand just-dipped caramel apples. All of these smells mingle withthe daily sights of animalshows, musical performances, derbies, tractor pulls, anddelighted screams of Ferriswheel riders. The rich history of the
Columbiana County Fair beganin 1845 when county residentsjoined together to promoteinterest in scientific farmingpractices, creating theColumbiana County Agricul-tural Society. With the societyin place, the first county fairwas held in a vacant lot adja-cent to Lisbon’ s planing mill, across from Thomas and SonsPottery on East WashingtonStreet. After six years of operation,
the society was reorganizedand two years later, in 1853,the current grounds, on thenorth end of town, were pur-chased from JohnMcClymonds. Since that time, the grounds have expandedfrom the small parcel on LeeAvenue, stretching to andacross Saltwell Road. When the fairgrounds first
opened in 1853, it featured ahalf-mile racetrack, somebuildings and fences. As thegrounds grew, so did the num-ber of buildings with the cur-rent number over 20, includinga restaurant, a permanent FFAconcession stand and cafeteria-
style eatery.Other buildings include a
dairy milking parlor, a speedbarn, Items of Yesteryear, threeshow stages, the historic colise-um, multi-purpose beef com-plex, the Rab-bit/Turkey/Poultry Barn, andthe all new Grandstand. Each year since 1853, the
wooden-style Grandstandserved as the venue for the everpopular demolition and com-bine derbies and tractor pulls.Fans and fairgoers alikeflocked to the seats to witnessthese events with great excite-ment and enthusiasm. Thecombine derbies have been sobeloved that it became the sub-ject of an hour-long documen-tary called “Country Crush”,which aired on PBS in 2010.The grandstand also fea-
tured other events like tufftruck competitions, auto thrillshows, circuses, the John Oliv-er hot air balloon exhibition,
and ostrich races.Live music also proves to
be a big draw each year. Per-formers like Dolly Parton,Porter Waggoner, Tanya Tuck-er, Tex Ritter, Lorrie Morgan,Jake Owen, Chuck Wicks,Confederate Railroad, andlocal artist Zach Paxson havetaken the stage over the years.Despite the storied history
of the Grandstand, consideredto many as one of the oldeststanding structures of its type, age took a toll on the structureand the grandstand was demol-ished Dec. 2013.The 2014 fair welcomed
the all-new Arnold C. GreenMemorial Grandstand, a metalstructure which seats 2,400,close to 1,000 more than theold structure, and covers morespace than the old structure. After construction in thespring, the grandstand was thendedicated and opened the fairon July 28.
However, not even thechanges can take away fromother historic charms of thefair, including the coliseum andthe fair office. For many years, the colise-
um served as the central pointfor 4-H members and familiesand has hosted the annual 4-Hdance and Beef and Dairy Auc-tion among many events. Thecoliseum shares hosting dutieswith the beef complex. As for the Fair Office, locat-
ed at Gate A off Lee Avenue, itis housed in a historic train sta-tion, moved from its originallocation in downtown Lisbon. After 169 years of opera-
tion, the fair board continues itsdrive to improve the fair foryears to come. So as the sayinggoes, “Wheel On Down” to theColumbiana County Fair Aug.3-9 for food, rides, music, andthe best in agricultureColumbiana County has tooffer.
Morning Journal/Patti Schaeffer
A giant thank you in the form of a sit down dinner went out to all that donatedfunds and supplies to the new grandstand, press box, winners circle and health, safety and tickets sales building at the fairgrounds. The hard working fair boardmembers and volunteers actually paused for a few hours to enjoy the fruits oftheir labor and joined the donors in christening the new grandstand with achampagne toast. The sound system was tried out for the first time on the crowdof a little over 350 people under the new grandstand.
