WEEKLY WISDOM

The Kingdom Transformed - Session TwelveThe covenant with David is the culmination of God’s covenants in the Old Testament, gathering all the nations in His Temple for worship. In the New Testament, we see that Jesus is the true Son of David, of whose kingdom there will be no end. He offers the todah in the Eucharist, the ultimate sacrifice of thanksgiving. He restores the kingdom on earth by giving Peter the

keys, establishing His Church and renewing the priesthood. And we await the new heavens and the new earth in the heavenly Jerusalem where we will worship God forever.

Brothers and Sisters…

Hebrews 12: 28 “We have been given possession of an unshakeable kingdom. Let us therefore be grateful and use our gratitude to worship God in the way that pleases Him, in reverence and fear.”

Ephesians 3:16-17, 19-20 “May He, through His Spirit, enable you to grow firm in power with regard to your inner self, so that Christ may live in your heart through faith… then, knowing the love of Christ, which is beyond knowledge, you may be filled with the utter fullness of God. Glory be to Him, whose power working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine.”

See you for our next Adult Faith Formation program…Bishop Barron’s “The Mass,” January 5-February 9, Sundays between the Masses at 9:30 a.m., as well as on Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m.

CHRISTMAS FLOWER DONATIONSHonor your loved ones this Christmas season by helping to decorate

our Church. The beautiful poinsettias and greenery that adorn our altar and sanctuary are a special part of the celebration of

Christmas at Holy Family. Donation envelopes are available in the Commons area. Thank you for your generosity and helping everyone

celebrate the Christmas season.

It is Not Too Late to Join Us!

The Women’s Book Circle will not be meeting in December. Our next gathering will be January 16, 2020, at 7:00 p.m. The book we will be discussing is Trust God by Perry J. Hohman. All are welcome!

Women’s Scripture Circle meets the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 7:00 p.m. We will be continuing our study of the Gospel of Luke, part two, using “Little Rock Scripture Study.” Don’t hesitate to join us any time.

CHURCH OF THE HOLY FAMILY VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA

Communion and Mission

As we prepare to commemorate the Bicentennial of the Diocese of Richmond, we are to “hold fast to the word of life,” Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior. It is His birth that we celebrate at Christmas and through His life, death and Resurrection, we have been given the gift of eternal life. As the local Church of Richmond, we are part of the Body of Christ, bound together in a sacramental communion with Jesus Himself as our Head. Under the jurisdiction of our bishop, a successor of the Apostles who is in communion with the Bishop of Rome, the successor of the Apostle Peter and Vicar of Christ, we are united to the Church of God and to one another.

During the Bicentennial, the Diocese will emphasize two essential characteristics that make up its identity as a local Church. First, we are to reflect on our “communion” with Jesus and the Church that lies at the very heart of what it means to be a diocese in the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. Second, we are to reflect on the “mission” of the Diocese. As a local Church, we are to share in the actual and universal Mission of Jesus Christ; we are to help bring about the Kingdom of God on earth and in heaven and to lead people to salvation. This mission is the very purpose of the Church and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we are to go forth to evangelize and proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to all people.

Communion and Mission are integral to the identity of the Diocese and this two-fold identity will be a major focus throughout the commemoration of the Bicentennial year.

WHO ARE THE MEN OF FAITH? WHAT DO THEY DO?We are ordinary Catholic men who seek a closer relationship with God. We meet twice each month to support and encourage one another on our spiritual journey. We preview the Mass readings for the following Sunday and discuss how to apply their lessons to our daily lives. We also read and discuss good spiritual books to help us in this. We join the universal Church in praying for our needs and the needs of our brothers and sisters in Christ. If this interests you, please contact Ron Batdorf at [email protected] or Bob Breault at [email protected] or (610) 360-6070.

SECOND COLLECTION: There will be a second collection on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day for Catholic Charities. Please be generous and please make checks payable to Church of the Holy Family. See the insert in your bulletin for more information on Catholic Charities and how they serve our community.

MANY THANKS!Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia wishes to thank all of the generous parishioners at Holy Family for donating Food Baskets to our clients for Thanksgiving. With your help, CCEVA was able to serve over 100 clients with abundant baskets of food. We are beyond blessed for your generosity and so grateful for your support!

COLUMBARIUM: Your visits to the Columbarium are welcome at any time. Because the Columbarium area is shared with others, please leave only small live flowers in a plastic or metal container, and remove them in a timely manner. No articles (other than flowers) should be left or attached to any part of the Columbarium. Thank you!

WINTER WEAR CLOTHING DRIVE TO START IN JANUARY:Your Knights of Columbus at the Church of the Holy Family will conduct a WINTER WEAR CLOTHING DRIVE again starting January 6, 2020, and continuing through February. We ask that you start THINKING ahead about items you may wish to donate to the needy or abused in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Portsmouth. But PLEASE do not bring any items to the Church until after New Year’s.

“CREATION CARE CORNER:”

Recycle Progress Report. As we approach the end of the year, it’s a good time to step back and take stock of our progress. Pope Francis, in Laudato Si, reminds us all to cooperate as instruments of God for the care of creation. Church of the Holy Family has made several strides this year, but we are still struggling in some areas. Our recently completed kitchen renovations embraced several energy saving ideas. The dish sanitizer is an energy recovery model that reclaims heat from discharge water to pre-heat incoming wash water. The new hood starts and shuts down only as needed, based on heat sensed from the cooking surfaces…no more leaving the exhaust fan running. The new floor material was made from over 90% recycled materials and will be 100% recyclable when it is removed at the end of its useful life. The ceiling lights are energy saving LED type, and will shut off automatically if the kitchen is left unoccupied. Speaking of lights, the new lights in the Family Room and Parking Lot? They’re all LED. Our electric bill for the parking lot was lowered by over 60%! We are continuing to explore options to convert other lights to LED. Recycling trash is an area we still struggle in. Offices, the school, and restrooms are areas we seem to do pretty well. That’s mostly due to the single stream type of waste generated in those areas. Common areas such as the Family Room and meeting rooms are not so good. There tends to be too many non-recyclable items in the recycle bins, including glass. Please recall that as a commercial entity, we are not to put glass in our recycle bins. So, let’s try to take a step forward in this area next year. Dust off our “Plastic Pledges” at home and use the blue cans for recyclable material and the black cans for trash and garbage. Let us know if you have something you’d like to share with the parish. Once we start to think about the kind of world we are leaving to future generations, we look at things differently; we realize that the world is a gift which we have freely received and must share with others. Glenn Rodriguez – Holy Family Environmental Ministry.
