The whole world is entering “the valley of decision.” What is going to be our decision? If we follow the
crowd, we may feel more secure for a time, but we also may be putting ourselves in far more
jeopardy. The same crowd that welcomed J esus into J erusalem by crying, “Hosanna! Blessed is He
who comes in the name of the Lord,” were just five days later crying, “Crucify Him!” The discernment
of the crowd in such matters has seldom been good. We each must have in our own core a moral
compass that we will navigate by regardless of whether others are going that way or not.
The Sons of Zadok
In Ezekiel 44, the Lord said that the sons of Zadok would be the ones honored with coming near to
Him and ministering to Him personally. Zadok was the high priest during David’s reign. When all of
Israel went astray and followed after Absalom, Zadok picked up the ark and followed David even
though it seemed that this would be certain doom. Zadok did not do what was politically expedient,
but he did what was right. He knew that the Lord had anointed David as king and that He had not
anointed Absalom. David was still the king, even though “all Israel” did not see it that way. The crowd
paid a dear price, but Zadok’s reward would last forever. To this day, his sons are those whom are
closest to the Lord.
Who are the sons of Zadok? When the Pharisees told J esus that they had Abraham as their father,
the Lord replied to them, “If you are the sons of Abraham, do the deeds of Abraham” (see J ohn 8:39).
Likewise, the sons of Zadok are the ones who do the deeds of Zadok. Do we have the faith in God
and the substance of character to go the way we think is right even if everyone else goes the other
direction? That was the resolve of Zadok, and we are in desperate need of that kind of leadership
right now.
There is a great danger with a vacuum of leadership because it always has been the greatest
opportunity for tyranny. Americans have lost more of their freedoms in the last three years than
possibly in the last two centuries. Recent Obama Administration orders have been described as a
frontal attack on the Catholic Church, but they are much more than that. They are a very basic and
bold attack on the entire church in America, as well as religious liberty in America. If the church in
America continues to sleep through what is being done to it, then it will very soon wake up dead.
Where are the voices like J ohn the Baptist who would challenge Herod? This is the time for courage
and unyielding resolve. If we are afraid, we will be killed like J ohn the Baptist. We must remember that
there are worse things than dying. It will be far worse to stand on that great J udgment Day as a
watchman who did not sound the alarm or as a shepherd who did not protect those entrusted to them.
In Revelation 21:8, we see that the “cowardly” are the first ones thrown into the lake of fire. The
cowards precede the unbelievers, the sorcerers, and even the murderers to this doom of “ thesecond death.” It will be much better to suffer now, even imprisonment or death, than to suffer then.
There is no place for cowardice in the true faith. The Lord made it clear that those who sought to save
their lives would lose them, but those who would lose their lives for His sake would find them (see
Matthew 16:25). This is our time. This is our watch. Will we show the courage that is demanded of the
true servants of the King?
We are hosting a Prophetic Conference on February 23 – 25 at Heritage. These are always
encouraging as we witness growing prophetic gifts that the Lord has given to His people in these
times. Even so, there is much more to the prophetic ministry than prophetic gifts and experiences.
The one the Lord called the greatest ever born of woman, J ohn the Baptist, rarely had prophetic
experiences, but he was a preacher of righteousness and justice with an uncompromising resolve. Hismessage of repentance compelled the entire nation to come out and listen to him. Repentance has to

be preached to prepare the way for the Lord. It is the most important message that we can preach in
this hour.
Both righteousness and wickedness are what God defines, not what political correctness says they
are. Not long ago, America was a nation that possibly aligned itself with God’s definition of righteousness and justice possibly more than any other nation. Because of this, we received what
God promised to any nation that walked in His ways. Now we are starting to suffer the consequences
that He warned would come upon the nation that departed from His ways, and this began with a
vacuum of leadership.
The answer is not to pursue leadership, but to pursue the repentance that will lead us back to God’s
favor, and then He will raise up righteous leaders. In II Chronicles 7:14 we are promised, “If My
people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and
turn f rom their w icked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will f orgive their sin an heal their
land.” Here we see that the Lord requires four things to heal a land:
1) Humility
2) Prayer
3) Seeking His face
4) Repentance from wickedness
These are required of the Lord’s people, not the heathen. It seems that a new humility is coming upon
much of the church, which is encouraging. We also have had some of the greatest prayer movements
in history raised up in recent times. Multitudes of Christians, especially youth, are now seeking an
intimate relationship with the Lord. These are all very encouraging signs. However, there has been
little or no repentance from wickedness. In- depth studies reveal that even the most devout Christian
groups have fallen to such a level of unrighteousness and the sins that the Lord called “wickedness”
that Christians are no longer distinguishable from non- Christians in basic morality and integrity. This
is an appalling and biblically terrifying state for the church in America. It has happened on our watch.
The Opposite of Zadok
Eli, the high priest who raised the prophet Samuel, is a striking contrast to Zadok. Eli had been a
faithful priest in the house of the Lord his whole life. He loved the Lord so much that when he received
the news that the ark of God had been captured by the Philistines, he fell over and died. Yet he was
given one of the worst rebukes from the Lord in Scripture. Why?
The first word from the Lord that Samuel received was condemnation for Eli because he had let his
sons fall into wickedness and bring a curse upon themselves, and Eli had not rebuked them. In this
message, Eli was told that sacrifices and offerings forever could not atone for this sin. Eli admitted
that this was the word of the Lord, but still made no changes. Eli was not told that his sins could not
be forgiven, but that all of his good works, even if done forever, could not atone for his irresponsibility
of not bringing the necessary correction to those who had been entrusted to his care.
This being translated for us today would be that all of the good works and charity in the world will not
atone for the failure of letting those entrusted to us fall into the iniquity and wickedness that will be
their doom. Are we the “sons of Zadok” or the “sons of Eli?”

The warning of Galatians 5:19-21 is very clear:
Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impur ity, sensuality, idolatry,
sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions,
envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you just as Ihave forewarned you that those who practice such things shall not inherit the kingdom of
God.
Make no mistake—“ those who practice such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” It
does not say those who have done these things, but those who “practice” them. If we have given our
lives to Christ and we continue to live according to the flesh as described here, the message is just as
clear in the other primary books of the New Testament, such as the Book of Romans, that we will
perish.
In II Timothy 4, the Apostle Paul warned about the time when a great deception would come upon
believers because they would “only want to have their ears tickled” or could only hear positive things.
Much of the body of Christ in America has fallen to that state now since they will automatically reject
anything they consider to be negative. As both the Lord and His apostles warned, such are heading
for a terrible end.
An abundance of teachers and teachings today can make people feel better about themselves, even
though their eternal lives are in jeopardy. Such teachings have so watered down the clear teachings
of Scripture that they can make people feel comfortable in your sin, but they are deceiving you. Even
the most devout can stumble at times; however, they will not rationalize their sin but rather repent. To
repent means to both feel remorse and to turn from the sin.
Doctrines are now being promoted that since the New Covenant was established, the Lord no longer
judges. The New Testament makes it clear that He not only continues to bring judgment upon sin, but
that His judgment begins with His own household (see I Peter 4:17). The New Testament is also clear
about the judgment that will come upon those who so dilute His Word as to become stumbling blocks
to His people.
I have been stretched far beyond my own reasoning as I have beheld the mercy and grace of God for
sinners. That He would love us so much to go to the cross as He did will be a marvel for all of eternity.
That we can behold His patience in our own times because He does not want any to perish is a
marvel. Even so, as the New Testament also makes clear, there is a limit to His patience, and we are
foolish to presume upon it.
We are told Romans 11:22, we must “ behold then the kindness and the severity of God.” Thosewho can only see His kindness without seeing His severity do not see Him as He is. Those who only
see His severity without seeing His kindness do not see Him as He is. He is both kind and severe,
and those who see Him as He is see both.
Understanding Judgment
God is a righteous and just God, and all of His judgments are righteous and just. His judgments are
not all negative, but can be positive, affirming the good. They can declare innocence as well as guilt.
The biblical teachings on judgment have often been distorted, but the righteous always rejoice at His
judgments. We also are told that the whole world will rejoice when He comes to judge the earth even
to the point of the “trees will clap their hands” (see Isaiah 55:12).

The Scriptures are also clear that everyone will stand before the J udgment Seat of Christ. This will be
a good thing for the righteous and only bad for the wicked.
Many types of judgment from God are in Scripture, and only one is condemnation and only one is
destruction. The rest are discipline from the Lord for those whom He loves. As we read in Hebrews12, the most frightening thing of all should be if we are still living in sin and getting away with it. This
means that we are not His. If we are His sons, He will discipline us.
America has been receiving His judgments because He still loves America, and this is evidence that
He has not given up on her. Like an alarm that gets continually louder if we do not wake up, His
judgments are getting increasingly severe. Even insurance companies have more discernment than
some Christian leaders. What these leaders have called “acts of nature,” they call “acts of God,” and
they are.
Many of the things being released upon the world are not directly God’s doing but are the removing of
His restraints so that the world begins to reap what it has sown. This is clear in such places as
Revelation 7. Even so, His releasing of these things is His judgment, and if we do not recognize it as
such, no one will repent to keep even worse things from coming.
If this offends you, then you have a distorted, warped view of Scripture. Such will take what are in fact
acts of love and interpret them as acts of condemnation. These are the ones Peter referred to as the
untaught and unstable who will distort the Scriptures to their own destruction. The destruction is only
necessary if we do not recognize the judgments and repent. God would much rather show mercy, but
there is a time when judgment is necessary, and if this does not work, destruction follows. This is why
the Lord J esus lamented over J erusalem. He would much rather have gathered her under His wings,
but she rejected the time of her visitation, and destruction followed.
Let us repent while the judgment is still discipline, before it gets to the point of destruction. We are
also told that we can judge ourselves and He will not have to do it (see I Corinthians 11:31). As the
Lord J esus made clear, if we do not humble ourselves and fall on the Rock to be broken, then the
Rock will fall on us and grind us into powder. Let’s take the easy way out!
America is in jeopardy. “If you do not change your direction, you will end up where you are headed.”
We will not survive much longer going in the direction we are headed. Much of 2012 may look like
things are getting better, but when men are saying, “peace and safety,” that is when sudden
destruction will come. We cannot look at external conditions to see how we’re doing—we need to look
at our own hearts. If we will turn from that which will keep us from inheriting the kingdom of God, turn
from our wicked ways, embracing the humility that would also compel us to pray and seek His face, it
too will be evident as the rest of Galatians 5 declares:
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and
desires.
If we live by the Spirit , let us also walk by the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-25).
If we, God’s people, will “ walk by the Spirit” instead of the flesh, then He will heal our land, and He
will use us to do it.

A New Breed of Leader
Mo rningStar Prop he tic Bulletin No . 87 (2012)
Rick Joy ner
Unless otherwise indicated, all Scripture quotations are from The New American Standard Bible (NASB).
What would the perfect President be like? What would the perfect Senator or Congressman be like?
Of course, we do not have perfect people to choose from for these positions, but if we set the
standard of what we’re looking for, and then start looking for the right people to fill the positions, we
would likely end up with much better leaders than we have now.
This is how Ronald Reagan was found. Conservative movements began looking for what they neededin a candidate rather than just looking at the available pool, who at the time, were clamoring to be
chosen. Reagan was not a perfect President, but he seemed to be the perfect one for the times.
Under his leadership, the nation not only emerged from its worst economic problems in half a century,
but vision and hope for an even greater future were restored. It was this faith that ultimately unraveled
the power of our greatest enemy—the Soviet Union. Nearly two decades of prosperity followed until
the recipe for this was forgotten.
We can have the best form of government but will still have bad government if we put bad people in it.
We have the best form of government, but we are not putting the best people in it, and we have an
increasingly shallow pool of people to choose from. A reason for this is because the system that has
evolved for choosing our leaders and representatives favors the wrong kind of people—the lower
forms of self-promoting politicians. It penalizes the right kind of leaders, those who are of the
character that produces the kind of servant-citizen-leaders for which our government was designed.
There is a difference between a politician and a leader, and we are in desperate need of not just a
leader, but a great leader. It is not the government that needs changing as much as the election
process. America is now facing some of the most potentially deadly crises we have ever faced, in a
time when the world is more dangerous than it has ever been. It is understandable that so many
would be pining for another Reagan, but for what we are facing, we need a combination of
Washington, Lincoln, Churchill, and Moses.
At one of our Oak Initiative Summits, Dr. Alan Keyes shared a brilliant insight about the flawed system
we now use to choose our leaders. He pointed out how the great leaders promoted in Scripture and
by our Founding Fathers were not the ones begging to be chosen, but were actually reticent to even
pursue office. King David was busy doing his job tending sheep when Samuel came and anointed
him. Elisha was busy plowing his fields when Elijah came and threw the mantle on him. George
Washington did not even know he had been nominated for President, and did nothing to pursue it, but
was elected by a people who recognized great leadership.
The process we have today attracts the very kind of people both Scripture and the Founding Fathers
warned us about. This system favors the self-promoting and those who can best beat down their
competition. Conventional wisdom says this process helps vet our future leaders and prepares them
for the intensity of the office. This may be true to a degree, but this reasoning is basically and
obviously flawed. If it were true, then how did we elect someone to the most powerful office in the

world who has never led anything in his life before and likely could not have received even a security
clearance?
This kind of “conventional wisdom” has gotten us into the mess we’re in, and it will not get us out of it.
We need a new breed of leadership, and it will take a new kind of vision to recognize them. Ourpresent system is not working. Again, it is not the fault of our government, but the process that has
evolved for choosing the people we put in it. We may think that it is too far evolved to change now, but
that is not true. We must change it or we will lose our form of government, and our Republic will fail.
If the politicians and pundits who laud the present process are right, why did we feel so slimed when
this process passed through our state? We were not left with vision, hope for the future, or excitement
about the coming elections and possibility of making a difference. We just wanted them to leave and
take all of their negative commercials with them. If this is such a good thing, then why did Obama’s
approval rating go up 9 percent since it started, and why does he now look like the only adult in the
group?
As a longtime, faithful Republican, I have never been more ashamed of my party than I have watching
the nominating process this year. Certainly there were some highlights and some good things;
however, not only the Republican Party but the nation as well will be in great trouble if we cannot do
better than we’ve been doing in picking our leaders.
Americans are now possibly as divided as they have been since the Civil War, but there is one thing
that unites virtually every American—the sense that our government is broken. It has fallen to a level
of incompetence and dysfunction that could not survive in any other field and it will not likely survive
much longer as our government if basic changes are not made in the way we choose those we put in
it.
The following are some of the basic qualities that the greatest leaders have had, and that we must
resolve to seek in those we support for any office in the land if we are going to continue to be a great
nation:
1) CHARACTER: The greatest leaders are the greatest followers of a noble cause. They do not lead
because they want the honor or benefits of leadership, but out of a depth of conviction and devotion to
something much greater than themselves. The great combine their conviction with a devotion to truth
and the transparency that proves this devotion.
2) KNOWLEDGE: The deeper and more expansive the knowledge, the more capable a leader will be
to discern the important issues of the times and be able to effectively address them.
3) WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING: This is the ability to apply knowledge correctly. Not everyone
who has great knowledge can apply that knowledge wisely, so we must not be impressed by
knowledge alone.
4) COURAGE: This is the ability to pursue actions and solutions because they are the right, not just
because they are politically expedient. This requires a deep and strong moral compass. Courage is
actually one of the most politically expedient things we can have because people in every age have
proven willing to follow courage.
5) VISION: If we are leading others, we must know where we are going. Our vision must be defined
and clear enough for those who would follow us so they will know why they’re following us. There isone direction that will get us out of any crisis or situation—FORWARD. Do we have a positive vision

of the future, or are we basing our leadership on the negative of just not doing what others have
done?
6) FOCUS: As President Truman once said, “Many people are defeated by secondary successes.”
Good can be the worst enemy of best. J ust as great ballplayers keep their eye on the ball, greatleaders keep their focus on the ultimate goal. J ust as great athletes don’t celebrate too much over one
advance or score but wait until the game is won, great leaders don’t celebrate too much over smaller
victories, but keep their focus on the ultimate victory. As General MacArthur once said, “It is fatal to
enter any war without the will to win it.” We need to define the ultimate victory and not settle for
anything less.
7) RESOLVE and ENDURANCE: Anything that happens too fast or too easily is usually insignificant.
Great leaders must have the resolve and endurance to stay in the fight until the victory is complete.
This has proven to be a very rare quality in leaders. It is much more exciting to start a war than to slog
it out to the end.
8) THE ABILITY TO PLAN: The ability to create workable plans is the foundation of accomplishment.
Any job is doable if broken down into small enough steps. Knowing where you want to go or what you
want to accomplish is the easy part—developing a plan that will get you there is another matter, and
few have proven able to do both.
9) THE ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE: The greatest leaders know where they are going, do the
necessary planning, and they are able to convey it to others in a way that inspires them to follow. In a
republic, the people are the sovereign, and they have the right to know what we are doing and why.
So do all of those who will be required to carry out the plans. However, this too requires great
wisdom. If we get so tedious in conveying the details of the plan, we will bore instead of inspire, and
even worse, can get bogged down in “the paralysis of analysis.”
10) THE ABILITY TO MOBILIZE: You are not a leader if someone is not following. The most effective
leaders will not just mobilize the greatest number of people, but the right people. Getting the right
people in the right places is critical to success.
11) THE ABILITY TO BUILD AND LEAD A TEAM: This is one of the most important abilities for the
office of the President. Many have knowledge and vision that can inspire and mobilize, but fail at this,
and thereby fail in their administration. The more immature or insecure we are as leaders, the more
we will want all of the credit for success and none of the blame for failure. The greatest leaders give
credit where it is due, especially to subordinates, and they take the blame for failures whenever they
can, even when the failure was by subordinates. The buck really does stop with the leader. Few can
do this, which is why there are so few great leaders in history
12) HUMILITY: This is required if we are to have one of the most valuable assets of a leader—the
ability to learn from mistakes and thereby not keep repeating them. The Southern General Robert E.
Lee’s death was mourned more in the North than even any Union general, including the one who
defeated him, General Grant. The reason Lee was so beloved by the entire nation, even those who
had lost fathers, sons, and brothers while fighting him, was universally acknowledged to be his
humility. He not only readily accepted responsibility for his failures, but also the failures of his
subordinates. Lee was the opposite of a blame-shifter, and so it was rightly said of him that there has
never been a more noble leader of a less noble cause. It may be unique in history that a leader of
such a tragic cause would become so endeared even by his former enemies. We need to ask why
today we can fight for noble causes and yet are hated even more for it. There is a reason for it. Falsehumility has caused some to apologize for America for things we did not do wrong, which only caused

more disrespect by both friends and enemies. Even so, true humility will always acknowledge what
we do wrong, not out of political expediency, but because it is the right thing to do. This is one factor
that seems to universally cause respect and trust.
13) ACCOUNTABILITY: Benjamin Franklin said, “He that is good for making excuses is seldom goodfor anything else.” Again, few things build trust faster than one who accepts and acknowledges their
failures. Few things cause the erosion of trust faster than a blame-shifter. People instinctively know
this, which is why Obama’s approval rating plummeted the more he tried to blame Bush for the
nation’s problems. The people knew Obama had inherited major problems, but they hired him to fix
them, not find those who needed to be blamed. Great leaders do not waste their energy or the
people’s good will by blaming others for problems, but rather focus on finding solutions.
14) GREAT LEADERS BUILD A VICTORY MENTALITY WITH HUMILITY AND GRACE: Great and
lasting accomplishments are built by a mentality that has high purposes, and will not settle for less
than accomplishing them, while imparting this to those who follow them. To them, there are no options
but success. This is the faith that builds greatness that lasts. It is right to celebrate victories, but there
is a difference in celebrating with the belittling tone toward the vanquished, or of arrogance, and a
celebration that acknowledges and expresses appreciation for all who paid the price to fight the good
fight.
Summary
Is there such a leader on the planet today? There are many, and there could even be many in your
own neighborhood. They are not likely to be in politics because that has become so foreign to the
nature of great leadership. Even so, I’ve been studying great and effective leaders for more than forty
years, and I see the potential in some almost everywhere I go. We may have a vacuum of leadership
in the nation now, in virtually every field, but it seems that the potential in the farm teams is
remarkable. For this reason, in spite of the great crises we’re now facing, God has a future for our
country and a great one.
We must learn the lesson given to us by the greatest and most effective leader there has ever been—
J esus. Never has so much been accomplished by so few as J esus and His apostles did. Where did
He find such remarkable leaders to do what they did? He found them among the common people,
living ordinary lives, and some of them very questionable lives. He called them and then He changed
them into the most effective force for good the world has ever known. They then went out and
changed the world more than any conqueror, philosopher, religious, or political leader ever did.
Since J esus walked the earth, those who have embraced even a small portion of His leadership
principles have had a major impact in their times, and occasionally for all time. Even if you do notbelieve that J esus was the Son of God, there is more to be learned by the leadership principles He
used than anyone who has ever lived. There simply was never a more effective leader and never
anyone who made others into leaders like He did. The main point He may have been trying to convey
by those He chose is that great leadership can be found in any one of us.
The great lesson of Barack Obama is that anyone can become President. I am still thankful to have
lived in a country that would elect as our leader someone from a still oppressed minority the way we
did with Obama. I was remorseful that I could not vote for our first black President, and I’m deeply
grieved by what he’s done in the job, but I’m thankful for such a country. I pray that I will be able to
vote for our first Hispanic President, our first woman President, or one from any other minority.

The Greatest Hope
Mo rningStar Prop he tic Bulletin No . 88 (2012)
Rick Joy ner
Unless otherwise indicated, all Scripture quotations are from The New American Standard Bible (NASB).
As we just celebrated the resurrection of J esus, let us resolve to live by this truth. Spurgeon once
said, “Very few Christians believe in the resurrection.” When I read this, I thought it was a misprint, but
I immediately had the witness of the Holy Spirit that it was true. We are told in Romans 10:10 that we
must believe in our hearts, not just our minds, for it to result in righteousness. We believe in the
doctrine of the resurrection, but if we really believed in the resurrection in our hearts, our lives would
be radically different.
How would they be different? First, we would not be so consumed with the things that are temporary,
but rather with the things that are eternal. There is a saying that some are “so heavenly minded that
they are not earthly good,” but the truth is that many Christians are so earthly minded that they are not
doing much good for heaven or earth. The historic truth is that those who were the most heavenly
minded are the ones who have always done the most good for this present world.
Those who are heavenly minded, who are obeying the exhortation to seek first the kingdom, are the
freest people on the earth, and they will become more and more obvious in the times to come. We are
told in Colossians 3:1-4:
Therefore, if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ
is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that
are on earth. For you have died and your l ife is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is
our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.
A nurse once asked why Christians did not die in a better way. She could not understand why they
were so fearful if they believed in Christ and had eternal life. This is a good question. Every Christian
should die with the greatest joy and expectation. We should also live the same way, as the most free
people on earth because we are not bound by the ultimate yoke of bondage—the fear of death.
The resurrection is the greatest hope that even the worst thing that could ever happen will result as a
victory. As we are told in II Corinthians 2:14: “But thanks be to God, who always leads us in
triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every
place.” So for those who follow Him, it is not a matter of if they will have victory, but how. If we follow
Christ, we cannot lose.
J ust as the most celebrated victories in war or sports are those that are won against the greatest
odds, the same is true in Christ. We want to see the supernatural power of God, but we just don’t
want to be put in a place where we must have it. We want to see the great victories, but we don’t want
to find ourselves in the place where we must have them. We are in the times when we must, so let’s
embrace the opportunities.
Even the great heroes of The Bible grew in the faith until they could be used this way. David fought
with the lion and bear before he faced Goliath. The same is true with us. He may one day lead us into

a great and historic conflict and victory, but we must not miss the little ones today that are intended to
prepare us for what is to come.
Rejoice in every victory regardless of how big or small. Embrace every trial regardless of how big or
small. If we are following Christ, it is impossible for us to not experience victory in everything—that isthe only way He will ever lead us. Even so, as the Scripture reads above, it is “triumph in Christ,”
not just ours. What did His triumph look like?
The Greatest Victory
The greatest victory there will ever be was the cross. However, it did not look like a victory. When
J esus was nailed to the cross, it looked like evil had prevailed against the greatest Good to ever walk
the earth, but what looked like the greatest defeat was the greatest victory. So great victories may not
always look like great victories at first. Therefore, we cannot give up hope regardless of how it may
look like evil has prevailed. Evil may appear to win for a time, but it cannot last. The ultimate victory of
Christ is sure and it is for eternity.
Those who believe in their hearts in the resurrection are freed from the ultimate fear, and therefore
they will be the most free and happy people on the earth. As we come to believe in our hearts that
Christ always leads us in His triumph, that in everything there will be ultimate victory, then how can
we fail to face every battle with courage?
We are promised by the Word of God in Romans 8:28 that all things will work out for our good. If we
believe His Word is true, then in every battle we should become joyfully expectant of a victory, which
is what we are told in J ames 1:2-4:
Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various tr ials, knowing that the testing of
your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, that you may be
perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
The “perfect and complete, lacking in nothing” that he speaks of here is Christlikeness. Everything in
our lives is intended to bring forth the nature of Christ in us, and by this one thing we can understand
all things. This is also stated in the verse right after Romans 8:28 when we are told that all things will
work together for our good. Let’s read these two verses together:
And we know that God causes all th ings to work together for good to those who love God, to
those who are called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to
become conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the first-born among many
brethren (Romans 8:28-29).
We are called to be heirs of God in Christ. There is no higher calling in all of creation. Everything
happening in our lives is intended to prepare us for this high calling by working in us Christ’s nature.
Christ is the answer to every human problem, and He is the answer to every problem we’re now
facing. It is not just that He has the answers, but He is the answer. If we are living in the knowledge
that the One we serve is over all rule and authority and dominion, how can we fear? Every challenge
is an opportunity to grow in faith, so a key to the victorious life is to not waste our trials.
The Hallmark of the Saints
In Romans 14:17, we are told that the kingdom of God is “ righteousness and peace and joy in the
Holy Spirit.” If we are doing what is right in the sight of the Lord, we will know a peace and joy that is

greater than can ever be known in any other way. As the troubles, fears, and darkness in the world
increase, those who are living in the kingdom will stand out even more because of their peace and
joy. Peace and joy will be one of the greatest signs that one is a true citizen of the kingdom in the
times to come. How can we fail to have peace and joy when we know and follow the King of kings
who sits above all rule and authority and dominion and whose kingdom is surely coming?
It is written that “ there will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace” (see Isaiah
9:7). Would you like to invest in a stock that could never go down, but would always increase in
value? Invest in the kingdom and your investment will forever increase.
Those who seek His kingdom first will be increasing in the peace and joy of His kingdom. As we are
told in Proverbs 4:18, “ the path of the righteous is l ike the light of dawn, that shines brighter and
brighter until the full day.” The normal Christian life is one that gets brighter and brighter.
Regardless of how dark things may become in this world, we have a different reality that is getting
ever brighter.
The times in the world will get darker, but this world is not our reality. As we are told in Isaiah 60:1-2,
when darkness is covering the earth and deep darkness the peoples, His glory will rise on His people,
and His glory will even appear on them. Those who stay on “ the path of the righteous” will only
know increasing light.
The time of the greatest darkness in this world will be the time when we will see His glory on us. Then
we are told in the next verse, Isaiah 60:3, that the nations will come to the brightness of your rising.
The light will win and the nations will come to it. It is darkest just before dawn, and it is getting darker
for a time, but this will only make the glory brighter when it is revealed on God’s people.
Our Purpose in These Times
The fear of death is the ultimate fear, so once this fear is overcome by the assurance of the
resurrection, breaking the yoke of any other fear will be easy. This is why the celebration and
remembrance of the resurrection is so crucial to the Christian life. As we abide in the knowledge of
this truth, we can more easily overcome any other fear.
The devil uses fear to oppress and control. In Christ, we walk by faith not by fear. Fear is
fundamentally a device of Satan, and those who let fear control them are serving him more than
Christ regardless of what they may say. This is made obvious in Revelation 21:8:
But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons
and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and
brimstone, which is the second death.
Here we see that the cowardly is listed before the abominable, murderers, immoral, sorcerers,
idolaters, and liars. The fact is that those who are led by fear, so as to be cowardly, are not Christ’s
because we are told in Revelation 20:14-15 that those who are cast into the lake of fire are those
whose names are not listed in the Book of Life.
Those who truly believe will be courageous, and they will not be controlled by fear. There is no place
for cowardice in Christianity. In this way, those who truly believe in Him will soon be distinguished. Let
us resolve now that fear will not control us, but we will live by faith in the risen Son of God. We are
called to be dead to this world, and what can be done to a dead man? A dead man does not have
