Social Media Today
• Continually growing tools• Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, etc.
• Can have exponential power (for good or bad)
• Just one type of tool• Don’t use in place of, use in tandem with
Social Media: Not the “Be All End All”
• Use in conjunction w/other communications tools
• Many opportunities to communicate• Reporter stories, partner promotions, pictures
• Still a niche, albeit a growing one
Don’t Wing It
• What social media tool(s) to integrate• Know audiences for each; choose wisely
• One account for city or separate by department?
• Allow external postings on your pages?
• Best way to manage chosen tools
Determine
• Who will update? One person? Multiple staff?
• Policy• For city leadership• For staff• For external users
• Training
Create Conversations
• Anything going on inside city
• Promote partner accomplishments
• Pictures increase impact
• Ask questions
• Be informal
Keeping the Momentum
• Free…but not really
• FEED THE BEAST
• Don’t be afraid to make mistakes; be honest
• Set realistic expectations
