Research• The use of mobile phones while driving is considered sufficiently dangerous by many Governments and it is banned in at least a dozen countries, including Australia, Austria, Denmark, Italy, Portugal and Spain.• Research so far has hinted that excessive exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) could cause undesirable effects as memory loss, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer's diseases and Brain tumours.• An Australian research published in 1997, suggested that transgenic mice exposed to signals similar to those emitted by a Smart phone were up to twice as likely to develop lymphomas.• UK study found that mobile phone use could affect the nerve cells responsible for short-term memory.• Nordic region study linked excessive use of mobile phones with headaches and fatigue – symptoms generally disappeared as soon as smart phone use was discontinued.

• It is said that today smart phones are the most popular and widespread personal technology on the planet, with an estimated 4.6 billion subscriptions globally by the end of 2009. Africa is the region with the highest mobile growth rate. By the end of 2008, Africa had 246 million mobile subscriptions and mobile penetration had risen from just 5% in 2003 to well over 30 per cent today. • In what is the largest long-term study ever undertaken, EMF researchers will spend the next few years working with the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a WHO specialized agency in Lyon, examining 3,000 head and neck tumour patients. The typical mobile phone use of this group will then be contrasted with the cell phone habits of 3,000 tumour-free control patients, to determine whether any correlation exists.• Researchers say by the end of 1990 there were just 11 million cellular subscribers world-wide; eight years later that figure had jumped to 320 million and is now forecast by the ITU to exceed 550million by the end of next year.Morudu Leslie-Ann 23472707

Conclusion• From researches conducted and information gathered it shows that the usage of smart phones has increased a lot over the years and still is increasing with each passing of the day, People have become reliant on smart phones for all kinds of purposes. My research has shown both the positives and the negatives of Smart phone usage and according to findings there’s more negative with smart phone usage than positive, it is apparent that smart phones usage causes a whole lot of damage to individuals and their well being as well as their lives and surroundings in general. Fair enough individuals can use their smart phones but they shouldn’t ignore the precautions that come with it as well, if they had followed these there wouldn’t be so much negativity about them. From the positive side of this, smart phones can help better lives, especially in workplaces(those with high demanding jobs) and in the case of school learners it improves safety(cause of trackers). Overall I’d say smart phones aren’t so bad, people make them bad.
