Design Requirements:Operations Concept Document
• Electronics must be designed to allow access forrepairs while installed on telescope
• Temperature monitoring must be provided (on and offthe telescope)
• Shutter control must be provided (ADC, filters, guideprobes independent of upgrade)
• Focal plane temperature control must be provided• Utilize existing services available at prime focus (AC
power, fiber cables)• Remote reset of MONSOON controller required

PDR Recommendations
• Recommendations from the PDR panelrelevant to electrical design:– Use MONSOON Orange for first year of
operations– Provide single-amp readout capability as CCD
amplifier failure mode recovery– Spares should be included in requirements– Install thermal fuse in focal plane

DHE Interface: Clocks
• Total Clocks per CCD = 11 clocks– Serial L & R registers must be independent to allow dual vs.
single amp modes (S1_L, S1_R, S2_L, S2_R, S3 = 5 clocks)– Combine summing wells and reset gates (SW_L + SW_R =
SW, RG_L + RG_R = RG, 2 clocks)– Parallel phases (P1, P2, P3 = 3 clocks)– Dump Gate (1 clock)– Scheme does not match Torrent capabilities - see slide 16
• Mosaic = 88 clocks Need 3 clock boards!• Maintain signal integrity between CCD and clock
boards Need to assign 3 CCDs per clock board socombine dump gates of 3 CCDs to total 31 clocks
Mosaic 1.1 Final Design Review - Electronics
DHE Interface: Biases
• 2 CCD Acquisition Boards 64 Total Biases– Scheme matches Torrent capabilities
• Total Biases per CCD = 8 Biases– 4 Low Voltage Biases (Output Gates OG1_L,
OG1_R, OG2_L, OG2_R)– 4 High Voltage Biases (combine reset drains and
dump drains to minimize count)• OD_L, OD_R independent• RD_L + RD_R combined• DD_L + DD_R combined
Mosaic 1.1 Final Design Review - Electronics
DHE Interface: Videos
• Total Video Outputs per CCD = 2 videos• Mosaic = 16 videos 2 Acquisition boards• Video input wired as pseudo-differential input

DHE Power Supply
• Larger analog voltage suppliesneeded to power (3) clockboards and (2) CCD acquisitionboards
• Total power in prime focus (PF)cage will be 195 Watts - currentArcon controllers produce ~100W
• Power supply will be designedto remove power supply heat(~135W) by conduction into thePF structure
• Remote reset will beaccomplished using E-netswitchable AC power strip in PF

Note: This slide applies to MONSOONOrange only. Torrent power suppliesare integrated into the DHE and willdissipate 50 Watts total power.

Shutter Control
• DHE-to-MSE Interface• MONSOON Clock used as shutter
signal• Opto-isolator circuit is copy of current
Arcon interface• Second opto-isolator installed on vector
board for convenient spare.• Connector J11 is same as existing thus
cabling can be re-used• See M1U-TE-03-04
Mosaic 1.1 Final Design Review - Electronics
Temperature Control Interface
• Omega Temperature Controller• MSE Interface for temperature monitoring• Thermocouple interface for servicing (fill station)
Mosaic 1.1 Final Design Review - Electronics
Focal Plane TemperatureController
• Omega 320 Cryogenic Temperature Controller– Low/High Heater Settings (2.5W/25W)– Autotune PID– RS232 Communications
Mosaic 1.1 Final Design Review - Electronics
Focal Plane TemperatureControl Circuit
• Two 25Ω heater loops simulate existing circuit (allows 12.5Ω,25Ω, or 50Ω operation)
• 120°F Thermal cutoffs added (same part used in NEWFIRM)• Control Sensor is Lakeshore silicon diode• See M1U-TE-03-02

Torrent Upgrade Plan
• No changes required to the Dewar (mechanical or electrical)• No software changes required• Plan upgrade for summer shutdown 2011? (2-3 weeks)• Ship instrument to Tucson (MONSOON power supply too)
– Remove the Orange DHE, Omega Temp controller– Install Two Torrent controllers (16 video channels)– Test CCD readout, temperature control, and shutter control
• Ship instrument back to 4-meter telescope– Install instrument on telescope & computers.– Install remote reset cabling (see next slide)– Conduct a minimal T&E/Commissioning effort - only need to verify
Torrent hardware performance on-site (e.g. grounding, gain, readnoise, etc.) - this effort should be similar to standard T&E at thebeginning of each instrument change.
Mosaic 1.1 Final Design Review - Electronics
Torrent UpgradeConsiderations
• Single amp vs. dual amp read modes - operational decisionneeded– Single amp mode would require two additional Torrent DHEs for
on-the-fly configuration This option is more costly andcomplicates servicing access
– Single amp mode could be accomplished with two Torrent DHEs ifthe transition module is rewired This option would require a dayor two of instrument downtime
• Remote reset capability of Torrent will require some wiringmodifications to the telescope and minor software updates This modification is not essential, but would provide a more“graceful” DHE reset option.

Spares and TechnicalSupport
• Critical components will have spares– MONSOON Boards (MCB, CCDACQ, CLKBD)– MONSOON Power Supply (duplicate to be built by KPNO
and used at 0.9-meter telescope)– Omega Temperature Controller (Lakeshore used for QUOTA
is available as a spare)– Connectors (already purchased)– CCD (engineering grade good enough for spare)
• Technical Support– Full technical documentation will be provided– First tier support provided by KPNO EM & MPG (they will be
involved with system integration & testing for training)– Second tier support will be provided by MONSOON group
