So, you want to go to grad school in the U.S? As I’m sure you know, there’s so many and it’s so expensive, so you have to be sure you pick the right one, right? Great education, good reputation, and value for money are all important of course! But committing to a college for perhaps several years of grad school also means committing to a town or city to live in. You need a home from home? How about an Idahome! Even though it does get colder than its Russian namesake sometimes, Moscow, ID could be an incredible choice for you. As well as the University of Idaho being an outstanding college, the town has so much to offer us graduate students from outside the U.S. The Location If you like small towns – great! Moscow has a population of just 25,000 people which I think gives it a great community atmosphere. Does that sound like the most boring place possible? Well, Moscow has the unique accolade of being down the road from another land grant university, Washington State University in Pullman, in fact they are the closest together in the whole country. Two colleges in 10 miles of each other means there’s always something to do. The Location of UI (taken from: ) I come from a tiny town of about 2,000 people, on a tiny Island. I like tiny. So, you want to go to grad school in the U.S? As I’m sure you know, there’s so many and it’s so expensive, so you have to be sure you pick the right one, right? Even though it does get colder than its Russian namesake sometimes, Moscow, ID could be an incredible choice for you. As well as the University of Idaho being an outstanding college, the town has so much to offer us graduate students from outside the U.S.

The LocationIf you like small towns – great!

I come from a tiny town of about 2,000 people, on a tiny Island. I like tiny. Moscow is the best of both worlds as I can enjoy the community feel the town has to offer, but, as I said, Pullman is on the doorstep, as well as Spokane for shopping (about 90 minutes away) and even Seattle for a long weekend. Whether you want quiet or busy, there’s something for everyone.

The FoodAfter living here for nearly 3 years, I’ve eaten pretty much everywhere, and I’ve rarely had a bad meal. If you’re wanting food from home, there’s plenty to choose aside from your standard (and delicious) burgers and wings. Moscow has Italian, Mexican, Greek, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, even Peruvian food to choose from! Proper British fish and chips is lacking though, and Indian food is only available during the summer months during the famous Moscow Farmer’s Market. Thankfully, the Co-Op is a grocery store with delights from all around the world, and they do student discount too

The CultureIf you’re into art, music, and culture then Moscow “Heart of the Arts” is a great place for you! You can even soak up the local culture by attending a rodeo (highly recommended!). I’ve been to see Chinese films, an opera streamed from The Met in New York, plays streamed from the National Theatre in London, and independent movies all watched at The Kenworthy Theatre downtown http://www.kenworthy.org. There’s also several venues playing local, live music all week long. The annual Artwalk is another wonderful opportunity to see work from local artists displayed all around downtown https://www.ci.moscow.id.us/arts/Pages/artwalk.aspx. Variety is certainly what you would get if you choose to move to Moscow.

The OutdoorsThe region that Moscow is in is called the Palouse, and it is spectacular! Rolling hills change colour depending on the season. If you like hiking, you’ll be spoiled for choice coming to UI. Moscow Mountain, Kamiak Butte, Elk Creek, there are many hikes (of all levels) and all with stunning views http://www.alltrails.com/us/idaho/moscow.

Curious about the local wildlife? These trails give you the chance to experience animals you may never have seen before. Once me and a friend got chased by a moose (would not recommend) and then rescued a turtle in the same day.

A turtle!

Are you like me and have never experienced seasons before? Moscow has them all! Personally, fall has to be my favourite, just take a look at those colours. And there’s something to do in every season. UI has a fantastic Outdoor Program http://www.uidaho.edu/current-students/campus-recreation/outdoor-program/activities who can advise you on trips and get you kitted out for any adventure. Which means no needing to bring your tent and sleeping bag across the world!

The PeopleI still remember my first day in Moscow. So many people smiled at me unprompted that I had to check a mirror to make sure there was nothing going on with my hair. Nothing. Just genuinely friendly people. If you want friendliness, Moscow has it in abundance.

So… For a tiny town, there’s a lot going on. Food, culture, and the outdoors – there’s so much to enjoy and friendly people to enjoy it with. Being in an awesome location, so close to other towns and cities, you can get away for some new scenery with little effort! Choosing a school for graduate studies is challenging. Make it easy for yourself and choose University of Idaho, here in Moscow!
