Palouse Wheat Field

Mesmerizing fields of wheat and barley, pea and lentil, greet visitors throughout the Palouse, but there’s gold well beyond the region’s distinctive natural scenery.

Tucked away in north central Idaho and southeast Washington, the Palouse is a geologic wonder unlike any other area. Home to two universities and one classical college, this area offers urban sophistication tucked between turn-back-the-clock towns. Rich in culture and arts, spirited college athletics, and abundant in outdoor recreational opportunities this area captivates travelers. They soon understand why this is one of the Northwest’s most photographed regions. Enjoy!

History of the Palouse

The Palouse is a region in the northwestern U.S. that encompasses north central Idaho and southeastern Washington, and is known for the majestic landscapes of rolling farmland and wilderness areas. There is

no clear origin of the name “Palouse,” but one theory is that French-Canadian fur traders converted the name of the Palus tribe to the more familiar French word pelouse, which means “land with short and thick grass.” Since that time, the area has become renowned for growing wheat and legumes, and has held the title of the

Pea and Lentil Capital of the World. This beautiful area is home to several different communities, with Pullman, Washington and Moscow, Idaho being the main hub communities.

Idaho named Moscow as the home of the state’s land grant institution, the University of Idaho. Just across the state line, Pullman, Washington was named in 1890 to be the home of the land grant institution of Washington State University.

These vibrant communities are home to friendly people, world class Universities, and unparalleled natural beauty. Residents enjoy “big city” access to the cultural and recreational events provided by two university cities, while experiencing the charm and safety of small towns with a mild climate, clean air, highly rated schools, and a low crime rate.

This area also enjoys four distinct seasons throughout the year, allowing for a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities that are within a day’s trip of Moscow or Pullman; including mountain biking, telemark and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, golfing, garnet digging and white water rafting.

PullmanHistory

Located at the junction of three streams (South Fork of the Palouse River, Missouri Flat Creek and Dry Creek) in what is now the downtown area, Pullman (first known as “Three Forks”) has a rich history going back to the 1870s. First on the site was Bolin Farr from Missouri who settled on present day Park Street and later built a house there. Second was Daniel McKenzie who came in 1877 and built a small home approximately on the present day location of the Manor Lodge on Paradise Street.

In 1881 Farr and McKenzie platted the town site. The town’s application for a post office called “South Palouse” was rejected by the Post Office Department.

The next application with the town name of Pullman was accepted. One theory is that the adopted name came from George Pullman, the king of the great railroad sleeping car. When informed of the town’s action, the railroad magnate reportedly donated $50 to start a city library.

Soon after, McKenzie invited Mark True to come from Moscow and establish a hotel here. The result was the Palace Hotel located on the southeast corner of Paradise and Kamiaken Streets. The town’s first artesian well was discovered while drilling a well for the hotel. These wells soon attracted newcomers to the area. Railroads

came from the west and the north and the town grew and incorporated in 1888.

After Washington gained statehood in 1888, there was fierce competition among the towns east of the Cascades to be the location of the land grant college. The award went to Pullman, and the town was forever changed. The Washington State College was established on the northeast part of Pullman in 1889 opening with 21 students, and the town entered a new era. That small school is now Washington State University with branches in other parts of the state.

CommunityToday Pullman is the pulse

of the Palouse, the largest city in the region and home to a diverse population of more than 29,000 residents and students of Washington State University. Pullman is rich with culture, arts and PAC-12 sports activities comparable to that of a big city. Named the 2011 “Best Place to Raise Kids in Washington” by Bloombergs Businessweek. Stop in a few of Pullman’s unique shops and eateries, browse the museums and galleries, taste locally made wine and beer or attend one of their seasonal community events including the National Lentil Festival or Holiday Festival.

Washington State University

Pullman embraces Washington State University, an institution which conducts transformational research and provides world-class education to more than 18,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students in Pullman. WSU houses 12 colleges including the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication, named after the distinguished broadcaster, journalist and WSU alumnus.

Students on the Pullman campus are provided strong career preparation and academic support in a small town environment conducive to academic achievement.

Campus tours are available Monday-Friday during the academic year (excluding holidays) at 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Tours begin at the Welcome Center in the Lighty Building, room 270. For more information on WSU or to set up a tour, contact the Admissions Office at (509) 335-5586 or 888-GO-TO-WSU.

Cougar Pac-12 athletics is a major drawing cards with everything from football to volleyball and rowing to soccer. Award winning Palouse Ridge Golf Club opened in 2008 and attracts golfers to its 350-acre, Scottish Links style championship golf course. For ticket information as well as news and notes about each athletic program, visit wsucougars.com or call 800-GO-COUGS.

Beyond the ball fields, Ferdinand’s in the WSU creamery serves legendary ice cream and renowned Cougar Gold Cheese. Include a stop by the Bear Research Facility on the edge of campus for a chance to observe live grizzly bears up close! (509) 335-1119

the area was first named “Hog Heaven” which was later changed to “Palouse Valley.” In 1877, Samuel Neff filed for a postal permit under the name of Moscow because the area reminded him of his hometown of Moscow, Pennsylvania. In 1875, the city’s first store was opened on what is now Main Street. Moscow grew with the arrival of the railroad in 1885. The town became incorporated in 1887 and was chosen as the site for a land-grant institution, the University of Idaho, in 1889. Idaho

achieved statehood in 1890.

CommunityToday Moscow is home to

22,000 residents and students. The area boasts a highly skilled and educated work force employed by Moscow’s many thriving businesses and the University of Idaho. Merchants offer an extensive selection of quality products and services.

In addition to Moscow’s fine business and educational reputation, the city’s arts community has gained national attention. The Lionel

Hampton International Jazz Festival, Festival Dance, Idaho Repertory Theatre, Renaissance Fair, Rendezvous in the Park, Artwalk and the Prichard Art Gallery are reasons why Moscow is known as the “Heart of the Arts.” Moscow has also been rated as one of the “Best 100 Small Art Towns in America.” For more information visit moscowchamber.com.

The University of Idaho

Palouse Fields

Colton and Uniontown. Upon entering Idaho, watch for signs for the scenic overlook.

TipsAlison

More than one successful landscape picture of the same location on the Palouse can sometimes be made by simply changing your camera’s lens and/or perspective. A wide angle lens (28 mm or less) set to a small aperture on a camera that is positioned a few feet from foreground details overlooking a broad Palouse field can create a dramatic, traditional landscape image. Alternatively, a long lens of 100 mm or more used at a greater distance from the subtle curves of rolling hills and field textures simplifies and softens the scene and can make for more painterly, abstract images.

KevinUnlike so many other

popular photography destinations, the Palouse lacks any classic icons such as Half Dome

from Yosemite Valley or the Grand Tetons from the Snake River Overlook. Instead, the rolling fields of the Palouse and endless miles of gravel roads provide each photographer with a unique opportunity to follow his or her own vision. I have been photographing around the Palouse for more than three years and seldom shoot from the same location twice. Steptoe Butte offers a reliable location to get above the crest of the hills, but I generally prefer to combine a bit of exploration with shooting. A detailed map will help you find the lesser traveled roads, or go without and explore. Some of my most enjoyable photography has been while lost. Keep in mind that the hills surrounding you are private land. If you plan to trek out across the fields, make a point to introduce yourself to the land owner get their permission.

Late spring and early summer

are certainly the best times of the year for photographing green and then golden fields of wheat. May and early June often have less stable weather, resulting is a bit more of a gamble for photographers on a tight schedule, but also hold greater potential for dramatic light. Winter in the Palouse is often dull and gray, but a clear sunrise over fields freshly dusted with snow can be a real prize to a photographer lucky enough to be out at the right time.

Basics• Always bring extra film

and your tripod• Scout your locations ahead

of time, when possible. Head out when weather and light conditions are at their best or

most interesting.• Consider investing in

a topographic map of the area, or stop by the Whitman County Courthouse for a county map showing the back roads in the region. Caution – many of these roads are primitive. Believe all warning signs you encounter.

• For best light, shoot ½ hour before sunrise/sunset and up to 1 hour after sunrise/sunset. Interesting lighting conditions also occur when storms brew over the hills.

Visit our NeighborsWhitman CountyColfax, Washington

Colfax, Washington is located in the southeastern portion of the state in an area referred to as the “Palouse.” Rolling hills, rich farmland, and tall pines are characteristic of the Palouse region. Colfax is in the heart of this country.

As the county seat, Colfax is proud of its local businesses, city hall, fire and

police departments, a newly remodeled critical access hospital, local newspaper, and its county courthouse. Almost 3,000 residents enjoy working, playing and raising their families in a community that is alive with small town friendliness.

The school system in Colfax offers students a quality education and many opportunities for athletic competition. Young people receive a high degree of recognition for their academic accomplishments from a community that really appreciates their efforts.

The Colfax Library offers free wi-fi Internet, public computing, educational programs, and very best in books, music and movies. The newly renovated interior features a towering Banyan tree that anchors Hayden’s corner—a rain forest themed children’s area.

Senior citizens have been drawn to the small community because of its comfortable retirement facilities. Colfax offers a wide range of social programs, home delivery needs, transportation, household help and excellent health services.

For the outdoor enthusiast, activities are plentiful in and around Colfax! A beautiful 9-hole golf course, situated along the Palouse River, is open to the public seven days a week. Colfax has four parks for residents and visitors to enjoy a picnic or just relax and unwind.

Schmuck Park is the largest with a covered shelter, cooking units, playground equipment, swimming pool, tennis courts & skateboard park.

Colfax was named in honor of Schuyler Colfax, who was vice president during President U.S. Grant’s first administration (1869-73). James A. Perkins was cofounder and first permanent resident of Colfax. Shortly after his arrival in 1870, he began building a log cabin in which the first Republican convention in the county was held in 1872.

By 1884, the Perkins family built a beautiful Victorian style home that still stands today and is an important historical landmark. The Whitman County Historical Society has refurbished the turn-of-the-century mansion which is open Thursday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Call the Colfax Chamber of Commerce at (509) 397-3712 for further information. On the last Sunday in June each year, an old-fashioned ice cream social is held on the lawn of the Perkins House. You can find the house by turning west off of Main onto Last Street, then right onto Perkins Ave.

Each year on the first weekend of October, the Colfax Chamber sponsors the Autumn Harvest Hullabaloo. This juried event includes artisans, antique appraisers, live bands,

On the first Thursday in December at 6 p.m. on Mill St. the Chamber puts on a lighted Christmas Parade with local businesses and churches participating. The grand finale includes the arrival of Santa plus a fireworks display.

Colton, WashingtonThe Colton story began

in 1879 when L. J. Wolford, Roy Woodworth and Dr. Cole, being dissatisfied with the proprietor of Uniontown, decided to found a town of their own. They acquired the property from Gregory Koshier and the town was platted that year. The name came from the first three letters of Dr. Cole’s last name and the last three letters of Mr. Wolford’s son, Clinton. That same year the Steptoe Canyon road was built. The main road at that time was from Pullman through Johnson which made the Steptoe Canyon road the best route to the river grain terminals through Colton insuring early success of local businesses. The present highway (SR195) was completed in the early ‘30s. In

1881 the city government was formed with a mayor, three councilmen and a town marshal In 1888 the Northern Pacific completed the rail line from Pullman to Genesee through Colton with two round trips a day, one passenger and one freight. The first Catholic church was built in 1891 across from where the city shop is now. The present church was built in 1905.

Garfield, WashingtonSituated in the Palouse Hills

region, surrounded by awe-inspiring scenery and golden wheat fields, Garfield presents an idyllic quality which is a refreshing change from the fast paced hustle and bustle of this modern world.

A more attractive and friendly town would be hard to find. Although small with a population of roughly 600, the town is well equipped to serve the need of its residents. Garfield’s local businesses and establishments include a bed and breakfast, tavern and grill, u-pick apple orchard, post office, bank, attorney, accounting office, cabinet

manufacturer, medical clinic, beauty shop, barber, a building contractor, meat market and landscape service. The town boasts an excellent swimming pool and park.

Popular events each year include the town’s May Day celebration the 3rd Saturday in May, Apple Orchard U-Pick Harvest in September and October, and the annual Christmas festivities in December. Other special attractions include a well-stocked juvenile fish pond just a few beautiful miles from town, and a photographer’s dream tour of our surrounding sculptured landscape.

Palouse, WashingtonPalouse Washington, just 15

minutes north of the Moscow/Pullman area, is the heartbeat of the Palouse with a thriving art community, charming antique and gift shops, and diverse and unique dining opportunities.

Photographers from around the world flock to Palouse to capture its one of a kind landscapes and beauty. From Palouse’s historic downtown to nearby Kamiak Butte County Park, photographic opportunities are endless in and around Palouse.

History buffs and those that would like to learn more about the Palouse can visit the Roy M. Chatters Newspaper and Printing Museum on Saturdays. The museum has archived the largest known collection of Whitman County area newspapers and the printing equipment once used to print newspapers and other printed materials. The museum also houses a great deal of Palouse’s local history in photos and artifacts.

Palouse also has one of the oldest and most beautiful city parks in the area with covered

picnic structures, play areas, and a seasonal outdoor swimming pool.

Plan your stay at Palouse’s RV Park or just a day of fun in the heart of the Palouse at: VisitPalouse.com.

Uniontown, Washington

German immigrants crossed from Minnesota to the Palouse in the 1870s and settled where Uniontown is today. In the 1880s and 1890s more German families continued to come from Minnesota and Illinois. Uniontown became a bustling commercial, manufacturing, social and farming center served by a railroad and a highway.

Early settlers built a wood frame Catholic Church, and replaced it in 1905 with a new brick structure that stands today in its original splendor. St. Boniface Church, the first consecrated Catholic Church in the state of Washington, houses the original five altars, statues, stained glass windows, stenciled painted décor and oil painted Stations of the Cross.

Thanks to volunteers, Uniontown is known on the Palouse for its ability to

get a job done. In the 1990s Memorial Park was resurrected, with the addition of modern amenities, using a small amount of grant money and thousands of volunteer hours. Volunteers also spearheaded saving the former dilapidated Palm Building, formerly a brewery and opera house, for use by the Sage Baking Company. When the Dahmen barn was donated to the community in 2004, again volunteers rolled up their sleeves to do the initial clean-up and demolition. Over 5000 donated hours were logged on the transformation of the building into the state-of-the-art artisan center it is today.

Today Uniontown is the south gateway to the Palouse Scenic Byway and offers some unique experiences for those who stop.

More history, details about businesses, services and events may be found at uniontown.us.

Things to see and do

Visit Artisans at the Dahmen Barn

This must-see landmark is located behind a famous fence of more than 1000 iron wheels. The state-of-the-art

facility has been transformed by the community from a former dairy barn. Artisans at the Dahmen Barn is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that cultivates creativity on the Palouse by providing studio space for artists to work in and sell their creations, a place for local artists and fine craftspeople to sell their work on consignment, a venue for local performing and exhibiting artists, and creative experiences for children and adults through classes and workshops. Attractions also include The Shop at the Barn, a gift shop featuring art, fine crafts and products from the Palouse and a monthly art exhibition. Four big events are held each year: A demonstration day in April, a summer tea, a fall festival in September and a Holiday Gala with gifts galore in December. There are also numerous visual and performing arts events each month.

The facility is fully handicap accessible and has no daily admission fee. Open Thursday through Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm, with early closure at 4 pm January and February.

Latah CountyKendrick, Idaho

Thomas Kirby founded Kendrick in 1889. He named it Latah and became its first postmaster. In order to assure the Northern Pacific Railroad's building to the town, Kirby gave it a deed to half the town site. In 1891 it was renamed for James Kendrick, Northern Pacific's chief engineer at the time. Situated in the midst of fertile country suited to growing both fruit and grains, with water power available from the Potlatch River, a timber supply not far distant, and mining activity developing in the Ruby Creek and Boulder Creek districts, Kendrick quickly developed as a trading center. In the early 1890s the town had a flour mill, lumber mill, and an electric power plant.

Kendrick’s rich history can still be enjoyed today. Visitors can admire many of the historic 1904 buildings on main street, tour the Bethany and Leland Churches, pull over to investigate the basalt columns that many university students travel to see, go for a swim at the local pool on a hot summer day, or shop at one of the many antique shops downtown. Visitors can also stroll or bike the Ed Corkill Trial that connects Kendrick and Juliaetta, with historical

markers of railroad history. Kendrick also welcomes visitors from all over the country to their annual Locust Blossom Festival, which is held the last Saturday of May.

Juliaetta, IdahoIn 1878 Rupert Schupfer

homesteaded the land where Juliaetta is located. For a short time the town was known as Schupfer or Schupferville. When the post office was established in 1882, the first postmaster, Charles Snyder, renamed the town after his two daughters, Julia and Etta. In the 1890s a tramway was installed and warehouses erected for the grain raised on the ridges above Juliaetta. It was powered by a steam engine and consisted of a track on which sled-like cars operated. Eventually seven wagon roads led to Juliaetta, with lumber, grain, and fruit as the area's principal products. In the late 1890s and early 1900s, Juliaetta was quite a promising town with a flour mill, sawmill,

lumber yard, grain warehouses, two general merchandise stores, a drug store, meat market, shoe store, millinery shops, blacksmith shops, three hotels, and a weekly newspaper.

Visitors of Juliaetta love to stop by the historical Bank of Juliaetta, now known as “First Bank of Pizza” and admire the original ceiling and safe, while enjoying homemade pizza for the entire family. Visitors are always welcome to tour the privately owned Castle Museum, which was constructed by Abraham A. Adams in the early 1900s. This house, located at 191 State Street, was built of concrete blocks with partitions of concrete 12 inches thick. Adams hoped that one day airplanes would be able to land on the house’s flat roof, and today, the museum’s rooms are filled with a collection of antiques and artifacts relating to local and Pacific Northwest history. Visitors can also venture up the hill to Colter’s Creek Winery, contact (208) 874-3933 to set up an appointment.

Potlatch, IdahoIn 1903 the Potlatch

Lumber Company, organized by the Weyerhauser interests, purchased the mill and timber lands of the Palouse River Lumber Company. Instead of building a major mill at Palouse, as local people expected, the company built a new mill, a company town, and a railroad. In 1905 construction

began on what was then the largest white pine sawmill in the world. Potlatch built homes, commercial buildings, schools, churches, a post office, and an opera house. Nothing was privately owned until 1952 when the company sold the town, giving residents first option to buy their houses. It donated the library, fire hall and truck, church lots, and other public facilities to the town. The mill operated until 1981 and was dismantled in 1983.

The spectacular scenery surrounding Potlatch consists of deep pine forests and grassy meadows, clear rivers and babbling mountain streams, providing year-round recreational opportunities. Potlatch provides excellent accommodations for hunting, fishing, camping, and other recreational activities. Contact the City of Potlatch at (208) 875-0708 for more information.

Bovill, Idaho Francis Warren settled the

area of the present town of Bovill about 1890. He built a log home at what is now the center of Bovill, and the

vicinity came to be known as Warren Meadows. In 1899 an English Lord, Hugh Bovill, visited the area and in 1901 purchased the land. He soon returned with his wife, Lady Charlotte, and two daughters, Gwendolyn and Dorothy. In a few years the Bovills had built a hotel for the accommodation of sportsmen wishing to enjoy the area's superb hunting and fishing. In 1907 he established a store to serve the homesteaders and was appointed postmaster. The extensive logging of the white pine by the Potlatch Lumber Company and the rowdy logging camps and loggers ruined Bovill's paradise. He and his family left the area in 1911.

While lumber is still the primary industry, Bovill is nestled in a beautiful mountain

meadow, with opportunities for great camping, hunting & fishing available in all directions. Moose Creek Reservoir is a locate favorite, offering a peacefully location for camping, fishing and recreation for the entire family.

Deary, IdahoThis area was settled in the

1880s and 1890s predominately by Scandinavians from the Midwest. In 1905 Potlatch Lumber Company engineers decided to locate a station of the Washington, Idaho & Montana Railway on this site. The town was named for William Deary, the company's general manager, who secured the claims and set up the Deary Townsite Company to sell land

after it had been cleared of timber. When sale of lots began in 1907, Deary grew quickly, with lumbering and farming the chief occupations. After the 1920s, with dwindling activity of the lumber industry in this vicinity and the paving of roads to Moscow, Deary settled into its present role as an outlying agricultural community.

Deary is located at the junction of Highways 8 and 3. Agriculture and timber have been the mainstays for the community since its inception. The mountain north of town that rises a thousand feet above its surroundings, is known at Potato Hill (elev. 4,017). It is a volcanic vent of undetermined age. Early residents called it Spud Hill, but the Enterprise always referred to it as Mount Deary. Two forested reservoirs

Onaway, IdahoNestled in the rolling hills of

the Palouse, Onaway is a fun small town to make a stop in! The name sources from the mill works at Potlatch who would stop at the bars after work. When a wife called and asked where her husband was she would be told he was "Onaway" home. When taking a driving tour of the area, make sure and check out this town!

Troy, IdahoTroy was originally known

as Huff's Gulch. In 1890 John P. Vollmer was instrumental in extending the Spokane & Palouse Railway (later the Northern Pacific) to Huff's Gulch from Moscow as a start toward completion of its line to Lewiston. After establishing a general merchandise store and a large livery stable, he had the town renamed after himself. It was incorporated as Vollmer in 1892. As a businessman Vollmer was very successful, amassing large land holdings and great wealth. But in 1897 the citizens rebelled against having their village named after a man who owned more than 32,000 acres of land, much of it gained by foreclosing on bank loans to farmers. A Greek

railroad worker suggested "Troy," the name of "the most illustrious city in the world" and backed it with an offer of a drink of whiskey for everyone who would vote to change the name. "Troy" received 29 votes; "Vollmer", 9. In the early 1900s, Troy had a bank, a flour mill, a general store, two meat markets, three saloons, several sawmills, one dentist, and a weekly newspaper.

Today the community of Troy is a fun place for visitors to make a pit stop and check out some of the local shops downtown, take a picnic to the park, or enjoy the Latah Trail that connects Troy to Moscow. The community of Troy also has fun family events throughout the year, visit troyidaho.net for more information.

Genesee, IdahoOriginally Genesee was a

village that grew up about a mile east of the present town beginning in 1872. When in 1888 the Spokane & Palouse Railway was extended to Genesee, the owner of the townsite, Jacob Rosenstein, asked what was considered an exorbitant price for right-of-way and grounds. As a consequence the railway built its terminus a mile west of the village, and the original town was forced to move to the present location. After the village moved, Genesee experienced a period of rapid growth. In the heart of some of the most productive farming land in the county, it became

a trade and supply center for a fairly large area. By the time the railroad tracks reached Lewiston in 1898, Genesee had been the end of the line for ten years and was an important shipping point to which cattle and hogs were driven from as far away as Cottonwood and Grangeville. Hay and grain warehouses sprang up alongside the tracks, and business boomed on the main street. In the early 1900s fruit was an important product, and apples were shipped out by the carload.

Visitors to Genesee can enjoy the historic buildings downtown, take a country drive to admire the beautiful rolling hills of wheat, barley, garbanzo beans, peas and lentils, or shop at the local antique store. Another great adventure is to visit the National Historic Site, White Springs Ranch. Take a trip back in time and see the circa 1876 log cabin and the 1884-1904 farm home. Call (208) 416-1006 for more information. Genesee Community Day, the first Saturday of June, draws visitors from all over. A great day for families to enjoy the car show, basketball tournament, quilt show, or warm up your running shoes for the Cow Creek Run. For more information visit geneseecivicassoc.org.
