Baby Moses - Preschool Lesson, page 2 Baby Moses' Adventure

Show Me Up Close Bible Time:

Picture of Moses' Family. with mother and sister pictures

This is a true story about this little baby. His name is Moses. He lived with his family. This is his big sister Miriam; and this is his mother. They were Israelite people who lived in the land of Egypt. But it was a scary time for the Israelite people. The Israelites were the children of Jacob, who had become slaves of the Egyptians. The slaves had to work very hard for the king, called Pharaoh, who ruled over them; But Pharaoh wasn't a nice king. He was a really mean king. He told his men to beat the Israelite people. And they were treated very badly.

Collage of baby photos or pictures.

At the same time, the Israelites were having lots and lots of babies. At first there was just a few Israelites. But now there were many, many Israelites. And more and more babies were being born!

Pharaoh picture. Let children answer the question.

Pharaoh was afraid that if there were too many Israelites, they would become too powerful; and they would come and fight against him and his men. So the mean king made a terrible rule. He said that all the baby boys had to be thrown into the Nile River! What kind of a king would say such a thing? That's right. A very mean king!

Hold up Baby Moses in basket craft [and styrofoam tray].

Baby Moses' mother loved him so much. She believed that God would protect him, so she did not do what Pharaoh told the families to do. For the first three months after he was born, she hid him from mean Pharaoh and his men. But then Baby Moses got too big to hide. Now what would she do? She trusted that God would watch over him, so she made a little boat for him so she could hide him in the river. She took a basket just his size and she painted it with a waterproof glue. That way, it would float on the top of the water and not sink. [We're just going to use a styrofoam tray to keep ours from sinking].

Show Me Activity: Floating Baby Basket Wrap baby with blanket and place basket. Let children answer.

Then she put the baby in the little basket. Do you think she said a prayer and asked God to protect him? I do too. There, now he is snug and comfy.

Place basket in plastic tub filled with water. Place lillies in water.

Let's see if the basket floats. She gently placed baby Moses in his little basket among the reeds in the river. [See how nice the little basket floats?]

Read Exodus 2:4. Place Miriam behind reeds close to the water.

Let's see what our Bible says about Miriam, baby Moses' sister. (Read Exodus 2:4).

Let Me Do It Activity: Splish-Splash Let children take turns pushing the boat or making the frogs “jump”. Swish water around to make small waves. Let children answer each question.

Who wants to take a turn [to push/pull] the basket so we can watch it float away? Maybe some frogs jumped out. I wonder what it was like for Baby Moses? I think he could feel the waves going up and down. Maybe he thought that was fun. Do you think he was afraid since his mom and sister were not there? Me too. He was all alone floating down the river. But was he really all alone? No, God was watching over Baby Moses as the little basket floated down the river.

More Bible Story Pictures Princess picture. Just as the little basket was floating along the edge of the river, the king's

daughter, the princess, went down to the river to take her bath. That's where people took baths in Bible Times. They didn't have a bathtub like we do. Some of the girls, who were with the princess, were walking along the river. The princess saw the basket floating in the water, and asked one of the girls to get it. When the girl brought it to her, she looked in the basket. And do you know what she found? Yes! Let's see what our Bible says. (Read Exodus 2:6) “Whah! Whah!” There was poor little baby Moses, crying! Aw-w-w! Look at the little baby, so upset and all alone! The princess felt so sorry for him! So she decided she would raise him as her own child!

Bring Miriam out in front. Since big sister Miriam was close by, she saw everything that happened. She went right up to the princess and asked if she should go get one of the Israelite women to nurse him. The princess said “Yes, please do”. Who would be the best one for the job? The baby's own mother, of course! So Miriam ran and got her mother and brought her to the princess.

Family Now the princess would pay Moses' mother to take care of him and feed him until he got a little older. Now the family could stay together safely for a little while until it was time for him to go live with the princess at the big palace! Then the princess would adopt Moses as her very own child.

Let Me Share Talk Time: We're going to talk about the name Moses. But first, let's each say our own name. I'll

start and then we will each get a turn to say our own name. My name is ____. (Have each child and assistant say their own name). Thank you all for sharing.

Princess picture. Read Jeremiah 29:11

Do you know why the baby was named Moses? That's what the princess named him. It means “saved from the water”. In a way she did save Moses from the water: She saw the basket floating in the river, and then decided to adopt him as her own child. Even though the Princess found baby Moses in the water, God is the one who really saved Moses. God is the one who gave Moses' mommy the faith to be brave and place him in little basket in the the river. God is the one who watched over baby Moses and made sure he would be safe. God had a great plan for this precious little one that he loved so much! Did you know that God loves each of you just as he loved Moses? He made sure each of you have a special name too. And each of you is precious too, just like Moses. God had great plans for Moses! And, God has a great plan for each of you, too! Let's see what our Bible says about that: (Read Jeremiah 29:11).

As we become closer to God, we will see how God brings about good things! As we grow up, he will help us know him better, and help us follow him, just as he was with Moses as he was growing up. And in the next few weeks we will learn more about what God's plan for Moses was. And as you grow up, you will learn more about God's great plan for you! I hope you can come back next week and learn all about the good things God did good things for Moses' and the Israelites.

Let Me Pray Prayer Time Prayer Sample: (This is just an example of what you could say. Listen to the Holy Spirit and say the words he gives you)

Dear God, Thank you for saying each of us are so precious - just like you thought of Moses. And thank you for the great plan that you have for each of us. Thank you for watching over us in good times and bad, no matter what happens. And thank you for your great love for each of us. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Action Rhyme: Baby in a Basket Now we have a rhyme to say. See if you can do the actions with me. It will be fun!

Rhyme: Actions: What's inside this little basket? Why, Its a little baby! Cup one hand on top of the other to form basket

There by himself, but do you think just maybe... Open hands as if holding a baby.

That he wasn't by himself? It just seemed that way. Shake head no.

Big sister was close by, watching him that day. Form circles with thumbs and index fingers, place over eyes like binoculars.

Our great loving God, could surely see him too! Point up.

Little baby Moses, God is watching over you! Cup one hand on top of the other.

As he floated down the river, I think that he was scared!

Make wavy motions with hand

But God was full of love, and he really cared. Point up.

He watched over Moses; made sure he was safe. Make “binoculars”

Mommy made a little basket, because she had great faith.

Cup one hand on top of the other.

She thought God would protect him, from that mean old king.

Point up

Yes, baby Moses, mommy did an awesome thing. Shake head yes

Down to the river, came the pretty royal princess. Bring hand from up high to down low.

When she found the little baby, her surprise she expressed!

Cup one hand on top of the other, then open

Sister asked if she should go, to find a nurse for him?

Hold hands out to sides, elbows bent, palms up, wrists flexed.

Yes, please go, the princess said, with a great big grin.

Make big grin.

Sister brought the baby's mother, right back to her. Wiggling two fingers of both hands, facing downward (people walking).

Now mom could care for him, just as she preferred! Place one forearm on top of the other and “rock the baby”.

Moses would be safe, 'cause the princess loved him so.

Join thumbs and index fingers; bring down index fingers to make a heart.

Mommy cared for him a while, then she let him go. “Rock the baby”.

Moses would go live, with the princess and the king! Walk the child by wiggling two fingers facing downward.

Now everyone was happy, Time to praise God and sing!

Grin big.

Family Now baby Moses would be safe. Now the family could stay together for a little while until it was time for baby Moses to go live with the princess at the big palace!

Toddler Action Rhyme - Precious Little Ones Now we have a rhyme to say. See if you can do the actions with me. It will be fun!

Rhyme: Actions:

Quick, quick make a basket, for baby Moses now! Cup hands together to make a "basket"

Mommy works so very hard, to keep him safe somehow.

Make weaving motion with hands.

Down, down to the river, we will go today. Wiggle two fingers, with fingers facing down.

Lord please keep the baby safe. That is what we pray.

Place hands together, as if praying.

Float, float, float the boat. Float the baby fast. Rock clasped arms from side to side.

We don't want the king to see. Hide him in the grass. Hold index finger up to lips.

Watch, watch, watch the baby. Sister is close by. Make circles with thumbs and index fingers and place up to eyes (binoculars).

She watches closely for the boat. Now she says, "I spy!"

Put on "binoculars", then point with finger.

Look, look, look and see. Who came down to bathe? Wiggle two fingers, with fingers facing down.

The Princess finds the baby basket. And baby she will save!

Cup hands together to make a "basket"

Wah! Wah! The baby cries. He's so scared and sad! Rub fists over eyes, as if crying.

Not the Princess! She loves baby! She is very glad! Smile and point to grin.

Sister comes right up and says, "Want me to find a nurse?"

Put hands on hips.

Princess surely does agree. She says, "Yes, of, course!"

Shake head yes.

Now mommy gets to care for him, a little while it seems.

Lay one forearm on top of the other, rock from side to side.

Then Moses goes to live with Princess, just like in a dream!

Wiggle two fingers, with fingers facing down.

For God was watching over Moses, this precious little one!

Make "binoculars".

And each of you are precious too! Wasn't this rhyme fun?

Make a circle with index finger, pointing to children.

But God is the one who really saved Moses. God is the one who who was watching over baby Moses. God was with him, and he kept the baby safe. Did you know that God loves each of you just as he loved Moses? Each of you is precious too, just like Moses. Let's see what else our Bible says. (Read Joshua 1:9c). God watches over you, too, wherever you go. So, next time you feel afraid, if you remember the story of baby Moses, it will help you not be afraid. When you remember how precious you are to God, and that he watches over you, it will help us. Did you like that story? I hope you can all come back next week to hear more great stories about the great things God did for Moses and the Israelite people!

Let Me Pray Prayer Time Prayer Sample: (This is just an example of what you could say. Listen to the Holy Spirit and say the words he gives you)

Let's Tell the Story With Pictures! Prep: Print all story pictures and make copies. Make an extra copy of the family picture. Safety tip: Laminate or make copies of pictures, as printer ink sometimes comes off. Or use black and white pictures and color them.

What to Say: What to do: Can you find the family that the story is about? Let the child that finds it lay it first

on the table. Who made a rule that caused the family to hide the baby?

Let children find the picture of Pharaoh and place it on the table next

After the mommy couldn't hide the baby any longer, what did she do next?

Let children find the picture of Miriam watching over baby Moses.

What happened to the baby next? Let children find the picture of the Princess.

After Miriam went up to the Princess to ask if she should go find a nurse for the baby, what happened next?

Let children find the picture of the Princess.

Yes, baby Moses' mommy was allowed to care for him for a while longer until he went to live with the princess at the palace! God was watching over baby Moses. He had a great plan for baby Moses, just like he has a great plan for you!

Keep all glue caps, marker caps and other small items out of reach of children age 3 or under, as they are a choking hazard. Use nontoxic washable markers only. Watch young children when they are using crayons, to be sure they don't put them in their mouths. Have an emergency plan in place in case of injury, ie. personnel trained in First Aid procedures

Baby Moses cut-out Baby Moses in his Basket - Age 2+. Prep before

class: Draw a rectangle 3-1/2" X 4-1/2" in the middle of the paper plates. Cut slits down to corners of rectangle from outer rim of paper plate. Crease on lines of rectangle. Pull up sides and staple to form basket. Top: (Optional. Skip the top of the basket for age 2-3 to keep things simple). Staple the giant twistie securely to the sides of the basket, about 1/3 of the way down the basket. Cut the bottom out of the paper bags, and cut bag vertically so you get one large sheet. Blankets: Felt sheets/ polar fleece: Cut polar fleece in rectangles big enough to be a blanket for baby, or use felt sheets instead. Baby: Print baby Moses. Make copies onto card stock. Cut out baby for children. Craft: Place basket on cut, flattened paper bag. Starting with the end of the basket that doesn't have the twistie, help children wrap basket: Bring up the paper, fold down over the sides and glue to the inside of the basket. Top: Bring the paper up to the middle part of the giant twistie, fold over and glue to the inside, to form the top of the basket. Trim excess as you smooth down the sides, folding and gluing to the inside as you go. Place paper shred inside basket. Baby: Children color baby. Fold baby's arms on dashed lines. Show children how to wrap baby in felt "blanket".

But if you turn it inside out, and the edges will lift up more. Push up all of the edges if needed. Glue the lilly to the top of the inside. Lilly: Fold tissue paper so it is 8 layers thick. Place pattern on tissue paper and trace. Cut out all layers together. Cut slits. Use twistie to keep all of the layers together in the middle. Show children how to gently separate layers to form into a lilly. Glue to lilly pad.
