Presidents Report It’s a testament to the greatness of this club that MRC attracts players from all over Sydney and from all corners of the globe. It was pleasing to see so many new players turn up at the beginning of the season, drawing from wide geographic spread: France, England, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and from many suburbs of Sydney. We also attracted players from Shute Shield clubs such as University, Gordon and Manly. This depth of experience is something we need to encourage and expand upon as a club in order to achieve our ultimate goal – winning the club championship and several premierships. Rugby Highlights While we did not experience the highs of winning premierships this year, the club as a whole performed well. Congratulations to Colts, 4th, 5th Grades and Under 85 kg all of whom reached the finals, with the Colts, 4th Grade and the Under 85’s playing in the grand final. That kept us focused till the end! 3rd Grade also had a successful year and came within a point of making the final. A special congratulations must go to our First’s captain, Michael Howes, who was deservedly rewarded for a cracking year – not only was he named captain of the NSW Subbies team but he also won the Kentwell Cup Medal for Best Player in the competition. A great effort and an honour for Howesy and indeed for Mosman. Nick Crampton also had an excellent year and was one of the four nominations for Best Colt of the Year. Many players reached milestones this year: Sam MacDonald achieved 100 First Grade games as well as 200 games for the club; Chris Polin also played his 100th First Grade game and Terry Down and Matt Adam-Smith both played 200 games for the club. Their commitment to the club is a very positive example for the younger players coming on – thanks to all four for their years of great rugby and for their loyalty. Another highlight of the year was seeing Michael Kennedy (aka “The Doctor”) recognised by NSW Subbies for his years of tireless service to our club and the game in general, and honoured with the Subbies “Service to Rugby” Award. Doctor also received MRC’s John “Lumpy” Dean Award for Volunteer of the Year. Congratulations and thanks from the whole club, Doctor! Sponsors A resounding thank you to our sponsors – it’s an undeniable fact that without their support, this 120-year old club simply couldn’t survive. I encourage all in the club to reciprocate this support with their custom in whatever way they can. Hotel Cremorne – We thank our major sponsor and in particular Ben, Bianca, Steve and the rest of the team who create such a welcoming atmosphere for MRC. Sportingbet –– Thanks to Michael Sullivan and his team, we have a new sponsor for the back of the jersey. Not only have they contributed sponsorship dollars but also many betting vouchers for prizes. Savills Real Estate – We welcome our new sponsor for the shorts and thank Paul McLean, the CEO (and rugby legend), and his team. 4wines – The Hattersley family have long been associated with the club and we are grateful to them for their support, including the donation of several cases of their well regarded wines from Orange.

11

Hayman Clothing for Men – Thanks to Greg Hayman, owner of Mosman’s quality men’s clothing store, for his continuing support Peter Lind Jeweller – thanks to Peter and Ashley for their long time sponsorship of the club – one great Mosman institution supporting another! Finao (Terry Down) – Thanks to Terry for his constant effort in maintaining and updating our website, so we can get the MRC message out to the world. Noel Parker – Noel continues to give his boat generously for an auction prize at the Supporters Lunch. Noel, a life member of the club, has not been well this year and I’m sure the whole club joins me in wishing him a speedy recovery. Coaches and Managers We are extremely lucky to have a group of very dedicated and skillful coaches and managers, led by club coach Steve Lidbury - they give an enormous amount time and effort to the club week in week out. We are still looking for a couple of coaches and managers for 2011, so if you are interested or know someone who might be, please call me. The fitness level of the club was very good, thanks in large part to Josh Larson the club conditioning coach. I’d like to see this continue in 2011 – it’s up to all players to start as early as possible in the season to work on their fitness. I agree with former Wallaby coach Bob Templeton who was fond of preaching the six Ps: Proper Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance. Club Supporters There are many people who make this club work and I would like to acknowledge at least some of those. Firstly many thanks to the committee for everything they have contributed throughout the year in skills, effort and time. They have worked long and hard behind the scenes to make sure the club runs smoothly – the amount of time they spend away from home and family for the club is greatly appreciated. Thanks to Damon Lynch, who is stepping down this year after several years on the committee as President and Vice President. I have personally appreciated his support for me as incoming President. I would also like to express my gratitude to Michael Flude for taking on the committee seat vacated by Trent Matchett, who was transferred to the UK mid-year. Trent has been a great player and contributor to MRC and will be missed. Helen and Bill Smyth continue to be tireless workers for the club along with Chris Bowles (Bowlesy), Ian Noakes and Pete McCutcheon. Also many of the players put their hands up – The Breen boys, Nick Crampton and Rob Taylor to name a few, but our thanks go to all who have pitched in to help on many occasions. In closing, I’d like to say that I’ve enjoyed immensely my year as president of Mosman Rugby Club. It has been a privilege to contribute at this level in our 120th year and I’m looking forward to the 2011 season – I really believe it will be a great one for all us. Remember, as players and members you are our best recruiters, so get your mates and contacts down to play next year. As you know, there is no better place to play the great game than Mosman Rugby Club. Thank you John Sullivan

Sponsorship Report It’s pleasing to report on sponsorship for the 2010 season. Mosman was able to strengthen its relationship with Major Sponsor Hotel Cremorne whilst procuring several new sponsors this season. In all sponsorship revenue was $34,200 for the 2010 season. Leveraging off the network of President John Sullivan, Sportingbet and Savills Australia commenced an association with Mosman Rugby Club. The Orange 4 Wines and Chookas Mosman are two new sponsors who also came into the fold this season. Mosman’s long term sponsors Finao, Hayman Clothing and Peter Lind Jewellers continued their support of the Club. This year we set out to develop packages, that would provide significant commercial advantage to sponsors through the formation and active promotion of highly visible, community connected partnerships. Our proposal to sponsors covered branding, community awareness, corporate hospitality and access to key Mosman rugby personnel. We still have room for improvement in securing sponsors and we’re confident that we can continue to build on the relationships that were formed this season. I’d like to thank the staff at Hotel Cremorne staff, who were integral in organising events at the Club. Thanks Bianca, Ben, Monique and Steve especially for their contribution to Mosman Rugby for the 2010 season. Thanks also to Terry Down from Finao, who spent a significant amount of his own time updating the website and sending out communications to the Club. To the guys from Sportingbet, thank you for contributing so generously at our supporters lunch, we hope that your first year with Mosman was beneficial. To the Hattersley family who though The Orange 4 wines started an association with the Club supplying the wine for our events. And finally, to Hayman Clothing and Peter Lind Jewellers, thanks again for supporting us though another season. I’d also like to pass on a special thank you to Nathan McCullum and John Sullivan who assisted me greatly throughout the season. I look forward to 2011!! Chris Cornforth Sponsorship

Clubhouse Report I can now speak from experience and say that changes are challenging – whether you be moving country or formalising the existence of a 120 year old drinking establishment every change has both its up’s and downs... and Season 2010 saw a raft of changes making it a both challenging and rewarding year. The Club has now been formally granted an events license, which was a path we always had to take. Unfortunately the benefits of this license are more precautionary, which led many to focus on the now mandatory obligations set by the state licensing authority (or in short the negatives). For a Club run, managed and serviced by nothing but volunteers it proved exceptionally difficult when RSA qualified persons were only allowed to serve behind the bar, or when further set-up procedure were added to an already hectic home game set up. Many Whales however did band together and some Club members really stepped-up in offering their services. I believe we are all grateful for Sharkie offering his services on more than one occasion behind the bar on more than one occasion, and we also shouldn’t forget his fellow Colt, Crampo, who was also willing to put his hand up when needed. It was only after a couple of games that I realised the Club literally caters for a 200 to 300 person party every second weekend and the amount of work needed to cover such things is rather intensive. However narrowing the year down this is what happened over Season 2010. Firstly the duty roster saw a few changes and I believe that these changes (although difficult to manage) made life somewhat easier and were instrumental in allowing us to cope with the down-grade in ground staff. For if I think back to my first season at Mosman, we had a full time cook on the BBQ, plus 2x girls womaning the bar/kioske area. In contrast to this season when we had no external assistance all work came from volunteers and/or players. At this stage I’d like to thank all the team managers/coaches/captains for their assistance; and a special thank-you to Helen and Bru for their contributions over the year. Friday night Junior games continued to happen throughout the year – led by Junior’s President and a true Clubman Tom Jeavons-Fellows. These nights not only allow us to generate addition revenue over the bar on a Friday night, but also promote the Senior Rugby Club to the Mosman community, promote senior “Whales” rugby to futures players, and add a great story for our sponsors in regards to exposure to parents that attend. I believe our wine sponsor – 4 Wines from Orange - were shocked at the volume of product we were able to move throughout the season. Hiring the Whalehouse has always been an additional revenue stream with a long standing arrangement with the Mosman Cricket Club, helping us cover the venue’s rental over the summer. This year we have explored further with the Club being hired out to the local Council, for their off-site training days, and a sprinkling of one-off functions (engagement parties, fundraising events, and birthday celebrations). Unfortunately the logistics of ensuring our compliance with licensing regulations have limited our ability to cater for too many of these events, however we managed to raise funds that weren’t being raised in the past. A special mention to Chunk in his negotiations with Council as they were without a doubt our largest customer. Stock management is always an issue with the club really having no real historic consistency in regards to stock volume in which to base any purchases. Plus the difficulty in being onsite to receive, stack and count stock on a week to week basis is always going to be a challenge. This season we explored various ways of receiving stock and have streamlined the process via Campbells Cash and Carry for all stock that must be purchased. However a special mention must go to our supporters that were able to donate stock throughout the year – 4 Wines (sleeve sponsor), Polin & Polin, Mr Nick Fitzpatrick (for the

14

millions of rissoles), and Adam Draper for arranging some delicious ale (everyone should be drinking Super Dry or Toohey’s New). All in all I hope the Whalehouse can improve in 2011 and continue to be a great meeting place for the Whales community. You only have to venture to most (if not all) away games to understand just how special our space really is – working together I don’t see why we can’t have the greatest Club on earth and I for one know; that once I’m done here in the UK I’ll be back for a Beer at the Club again and again. Trent Matchett Clubhouse Manager

Social Report The social activities kicked off early in the year for Mosman Rugby Club with a 'Players and Partners lunch' held at Balmoral Beach Club. Mosman Rugby appreciates the support of players wives, partners and their family. The event attracted around 30 couples and a few children, who enjoyed a lunch and a few drinks on the beach front of Balmoral. After lunch the lads enjoyed a game of touch and a swim, and we look forward to this being an annual event. The annual 'Newies Night' will definately go down as the loosest night of the 2010. The combination of a Whalewash over Forest (including the boat race), 2-4-1 Bitch beers and a gangsta theme of Bloodz n Cripz, saw the Newies fit straight in to the Whales' welcoming and highly sociable nature! With the Newies dressed in red as the Bloodz, they were treated to complimentary drinks all night with the curent players dressed in blue (The Cripz) sticking to the concept, 'Be a Whale, Buy your mate drink'. Thanks to Lou Deegan providing the Bitch Beer for the year. A new event on the social calendar in 2010 was the Eastern Suburns Night. After going head to head with Colleagues back in Round 3, a large contingent of Whales made their presence felt in the Eastern Suburbs. We took on Colleagues in the boat race and shared a few cans in their clubhouse, then found ourselves at the Plumer Road chicken shop, bizarely playing drinking games by the street. Feeling somewhat more relaxed, the Royal Oak was our next stop before ending up at the Sheaf til late. It is hoped that this Eastern Suburbs Night becomes an annual tradition!! We celebrated the life of a well liked and well respected Old Boy, Phil Zeitsch, on our 'Back to Mosman Day'. The Whale house was packed, with many Old Boys reminiscing about tries scored, tours near and far and big hits. We thank the Zeitsch family for their support on the day and contribution to the club. We welcomed Lindfield to Rawson Oval for our Annual 'Ladies Day' held on the 19 June 2010. It was my 5th year organising the Ladies day and thanks to the support of the players, it was another amazing day. This year we attracted a record attendance of 248 ladies, who enjoyed lunch by Pasta Zu, wine tastings by Four Wines Winery, manicures, massages, Fitness First exhibit, cheese tastings and workshop all whilst being entertained by the world famous Minsky's Piano Man. I enjoyed hosting the day, and thanks to Richard Grooms, Ralphed Notley, Mark Scarrott and players, who assisted to make it another successful day. The event continued to the after party at Minskys for Karaoke in to the late hours. The 'Balmain Pub Crawl' after the away match vs Drummoyne was a new event in 2010, which we hope will continue to be an annual event for years to come. It was extremely pleasing to see over 30 Whales stick around for the post-match speeches before making our way to several Balmain watering holes. We were honoured to have Sally Loane, Damien Fitzpatrick and Richard Harry as our special guests for the 'Supporters Lunch'. This was held on the 30 July 2010 at the Taronga Centre and attracted 130 guests. The lunch provided guests to hear past and present stories from Richard and Damien, and also Sally provided us with an insight in to the direction of rugby at a Super 14 level. We raised substantial funds for the club, thanks to our generous sponsors and donations from guests on the day. Once again, support from Hotel Cremorne, arranging a bus for post event drinks back at the hotel. The 'Hawaiian/Flanno Night' ,which coincided with a farewell to true blue Clubman Trent Matchett, was another memorable occasion. Trent kindly shouted the Whalehouse 5 cases of Barefoot Radlers which saw the Whales kicking on until late in the night at the Megahole. The last Whalehouse party for 2010 was the 'YMCA Village People bash'. Coincidently, the Beecroft fellas were doing a north shore pub crawl that night, which meant excellent numbers staying around for the boat race and post match speeches. Without doubt the choice of attire by all on the night was sensational,

16

highlighted by Tim 'CD 09' Rist as a lipstick wearing Indian chief. This night also saw the Annual Front Rowers Initiation take place, under the watchful instruction of Greg Parker, having taken up the reins from Club legend Mick 'Monkey' Munro. The bus trip to the semi finals at UNSW in Daceyville and afterwards to Paddington, rivalled the Newies Night as the loosest night of the year. With the 1st Grade coaches and Breen Brothers leading the way and popping the top of their first 'green grenade' at 9:30am, it was indeed a large day! The Grand Final party of 2010 was held at the pool room at Hotel Cremorne. Despite not having any silverware to celebrate with, Steve the licencee made sure all Whales had a good time. Special thanks to 6th Grader Andrew Hamiliton, who after winning big on the pokies, bought 50 shots of tequilla! The post-match speeches and boat races in the Whalehouse in 2010 have been a huge success. Our top-notch facilities allow us to host the best post-match functions in all of Suburban Rugby, which is something we all need to be very proud of. Our challenge for 2011 is to keep up the commitment to these home game functions, especially by 1st & 2nd graders, which will naturally see other grades follow. However, there is a huge need for improvement at away game functions. That being said, the post-match function after Round 18 at Lindfield Rugby Club was perhaps the best away function the Whales have been a part of for many years, with many Whales in attendance. We hope that this can be a spring board for a renewed commitment to away functions in 2011. With permission from the old boys, this year we decided to split the presentation night between a BBQ and an End of Season Ball. We hosted players and partners on a suuny Sunday and presented players with the minor club awards. Players and partners enjoyed a relaxing lunch and drinks on the oval, and it was nice to see a good turnout including players' children showing Mosman Rugby Club is a family club. The end of season Ball was held on the 9 October 2010 at the Taronga Centre, celebrating 120 years of Mosman Rugby Club. The event attrached around 130 guests, with a good mix of players and partners. The night began with pre dinner drinks on the balcony, enjoying the harbour views, while the sun was setting. The crowd was entertained by our president and MC John Sullivan, and the major club awards were presented. The awards were presented early in the evening which allowed the guests plenty of dancing time. At the conclusion of the night, we boarded the bus to Hotel Cremorne for the after party at Minskys. I had the great pleasure of organising the key events in Season 2010 with Alex Breen (Bru) and the social committee, including Anthony O'Gorman (Shooter / Pramgate), Nick Crampton (Crampo) , Anthony Bowden (Chewy) and Ash Breen. We look forward to a successful events schedule for Season 2011. Nathan McCullum (Chunk) & Alex Breen (Bru)

Mosman Rugby Business Club Report The Mosman Rugby Business Club (MRBC) was launched exactly one year ago, with the primary objective of providing a forum for players and members to interact on a professional level, create professional relationships and “do business” with each other. Many meetings on, the MRBC is still in a growth phase, with new members joining almost every meeting. The club exists of members from a wide variety of professions and trades and therefore offers an extensive range of goods and services from wine to building. The MRBC has been extremely lucky in having been addressed by a range of guest speakers second to none. These include ARU Chairman Ron Graham, Savills’ CEO, former Wallaby and Club Sponsor Paul Mc Lean, Roger Davis, consultant to Rothschilds and former Wallaby, and Richard Harry, General manager Goodman and 1999 Rugby World Cup winning Wallaby prop. Our sincere thanks to these gentlemen for being part of the MRBC.

Thanks must also go to those who have so greatly contributed to the success and running of MRBC. Committee members Martin Wilson, Blodwen Parker and Ron Bowden have been stoic in their support and a huge help. Many thanks also to John Sullivan in organising guest speakers, Terry Down for assistance with the website, and to Peter Turnbull for introducing such fine wines to the meetings. The MRBC has raised thousands of dollars for the Mosman Rugby Club in its’ first year, something of which I am immensely proud. I am sure this will continue with the support of existing and new members as we enter only our second year. Sincerely, Mark Williams

Mosman Rugby Foundation Report Foundation activity in 2010 has again been restrained due to the ‘GFC’, however, as the year comes to an end and air warms there is a glow of new energy and ideas aplenty for the year ahead. Whilst the Club also chose not to make any early season requests of the Foundation and no player scholarships were awarded, the Foundation was able to assist in supporting one of our first grade players who suffered financial hardship as a result of injury. Income to the Foundation in 2010 has been maintained by existing pledge commitments and revitalisation of these will be a key activity in 2011. In addition to this it is hoped the Foundation may see some benefit from Terry Down’s great initiative to replace the Rawson pickets. This proposal is currently before Mosman Council and we eagerly await receipt of their approval to proceed. My thanks again to the Foundation Committee and all our contributors. Objectives and Criteria of Mosman Rugby Foundation Trust

1. Mosman Rugby Club was established in 1890. Since that time the Club has operated to provide amateur rugby union players with access to rugby union competitions.

2. Until recently all rugby union has been played as an amateur game. Certain rugby union

competitions are now played at a professional level, and to some extent this fact has impacted on the conduct of competitions at other grade levels.

3. Mosman Rugby Club intends to continue to conduct the Club so that it provides for

players who are essentially amateur sportsman, who enjoy playing rugby union as a form of recreation and not a profession

4. For the purpose of enhancing the sport of rugby union generally by, attracting, recruiting,

and retaining high quality rugby players to Mosman Rugby Club intends to establish the Mosman Rugby Foundation.

5. The Mosman Rugby Foundation will be a trust fund which will provide resources

(particularly but not limited to financial resources) to registered Mosman Rugby Club members who meet the criteria specified in the Mosman Rugby Foundation Constitution.

6. The precise nature of the resources to be provided and to whom such resources will be

provided will be determined from time to time by the trustees of the Mosman Rugby Foundation, however it is generally intended that recourses will be either :

Rugby Chair Report Well, another year all done & dusted, and what a relief! Whilst certainly it’s disappointing that no silverware was brought back to Rawson this year, I believe that the club showed some real character to end the season the way we did. To say the least, the year was long, very long. The amount of wet weather disruptions to training & playing was well beyond a joke – surely it can’t be as bad next year?! There were key injuries throughout the grades all through the year, more so in 1’s & 2’s (or so it seemed), that had a flow on effect down the line. These issues put a continual & extra strain on the coaching staff (not to mention the players!) to try & get a team on the pitch or at training all year round, thank you to all involved for your hard work & dedication to the club, most of which goes unnoticed & unrewarded. Even though it was a tough year on the pitch, we did have some players who achieved some great personal achievements: Michael Howes – NSWSRU/Kentwell Player of the year & subbies captain, Nick Crampton for being nominated for the Colts player of the year award & joint winners of the 2010 Players Player – Ed Garner & Simon Meiklejohn – great effort by all of you! There are many people to thank & recognise for assisting in getting us on the training & playing field week after week –

• Doc – seriously, I am pretty sure if you look up the word legend in the dictionary it will say Michael Kennedy. There is nothing he won’t do to make it possible for everyone to be able to play & enjoy rugby. From coaching the U85’s, to taking the gear to & from the ground every weekend, to cleaning up & sweeping/hosing out the dressing sheds after every home game, to repacking the side store room after everyone just throws the gear in any way they can when doing ground pack up, to teaching the youth of today about how beneficial a colourful vocabulary is – WTF Doctor!, coming back every Sunday after a home game to ensure that there is no rubbish on the grand stands or the ground after everyone enjoys the clubhouse the night before, making sure the jerseys get washed & sorted each week, assisting out the committee wherever & whenever is needed, making sure we have the right equipment to train/play with. I could easily go on about how much Doctor does for the club, this year has been no different. To me, the thing that really sets him aside from everyone is else is his passion & his genuine love for the club & the game of rugby – we all should take some notes out of his book & if everyone put in at least 10% of what Doc does (yes, that is a request!), we truly would be an even better club. On top of this, he NEVER asks for anything in return, he just does it because it has to be done, he is the epitome of a true clubman. As such, it was great to see Doc honoured, not only by the whales at our presentation, but also by Subbies rugby this year & getting one of the most esteemed awards – the NSWSRU Volunteer of the year. This was a great recognition for the 34+ years Doc has given to our club. Doc – THANKYOU

• To Colts, 4th & 5th Grade – well done on making the finals & for 4’s & Colts on the Grand Finals

• To all the volunteer refs & touchies that run the line for us week after week & throughout the year – Peter McCutcheon, Bill “Junior” Smyth, Aragon Heppel, Ian Noakes & others

• To Mosman Council (in particular Greg Keys & Kate Pires) & Jim Cameron & his crew at Around the Grounds, for allowing us some flexibility with ground usage this year (hey, there’s not much that can be done when Rawson is under water so often!)

21

• To Mick Morgan for getting us continual access to Monte girls school in Nth Sydney so often this year & also Greg Virgona for being able to have Oxford Falls as an alternate for the lower grades

• To Kooga for supplying such a great kit this year • To our resident & honorary (self appointed) QC (he just wants a wig!) – the amazing John

Davaine, JD was our “legal counsel” for all judiciary hearings this year, without his knowledge of the system & brilliant communication skills, a few boys would have been spending a few weeks extra on the sideline . JD was also the coach of the year again this year & we look forward to having him join the grade ranks next year

• To all Coaches, Managers & other people that assisted in any way, thank you for all your time & efforts. I am sure if players really knew how much time is spent in trying to get a team on the paddock week in week out, whilst still having a full time job of your own, they would be that little bit more understanding

• To Steve “Libbo” Lidbury, thank you for your valuable time & input throughout the year – we hope that we see you back again next year & inspire us to a heap of silverware, but will settle for Club champs & Kentwell!

• To Josh Larsen, our new club trainer this year, most of the guys probably think you’re an asshole for flogging them week in week out, but one things is for sure, our fitness was never an issue throughout the season, so thanks for that & I am sure the guys are looking forward to the last week in January already!

• To Bru, Laous & their crew of merry workers – thank you for all the work you done off the pitch - from the start of season trip to Orange to all the functions that you organised throughout the year, you kept the real club spirit & camaraderie alive even when results weren’t being achieved on the pitch. It is people like you who make this the best rugby club in the world to be part of

• A special thanks to all the supporters/WAGS/Old Boys/family & friends who come out to support the club & the players all through the year

• Last, but certainly not least, thanks to all the players – you are what this club is here for & it’s a privilege to be able to assist in any way/shape or form in helping you achieve whatever it is you play for

Sincere apologies to those people whom I may have missed in mentioning above – I have no doubts you will let me know who you are! At times this year some things could have been done better, there have been many lessons learnt & certainly the same mistakes won’t be made next year. All in all, another great season at the Whale house & I look forward to a much bigger & better 2011. Yours in Rugby Boydy

Club Captains Report As I sit down and reflect on Season 2010 I can’t help but think back to this time last year when I writing about the amazing on-field success the Whales had in 2009 – three premierships, three grand finalists and 3rd in the Club Champs. On the surface it would appear that 2010 was unsuccessful for the Whales, especially when compared to the recent glory years of 2007 and 2009. However, I believe if we look deeper into what the Whales stands for then we will see that Mosman Rugby is about much more than silverware in a cabinet. Having lived in the Mosman area all my life and played for the Whales since I was 7 years old, I know exactly how special this Club is. With a history spanning 120 years, this rugby club been central to countless life long friendships throughout not only Australia but the entire world. Just look around at the bond between the Old Boys at any home game and it’s plain to see that Mosman Rugby is indeed a unique club to be a part of. If 2010 is to be evaluated from this angle, then I firmly believe it has been a massive success. As Club Captain, I believe the highlight of 2010 has been the flock of new faces across the Club as well as the coming of age of the ‘09 Colts amongst the grade ranks. Just ask any of the new guys around the Club whether they have enjoyed their first year as a Whale and I assure you all would confirm that they have had a blast and are already excited for 2011 and beyond. This says a lot about the Whales!! ‘Newies’ like Drapes, Pickles, Ianni, Brent, Dazza (aka ‘Andrew’) and Laurent were welcome additions to not only 1st/2nd Grade but to also the ‘hydrating’ culture at the core of this Club. Then there were blokes like Ant Serventi, Braydy, Chappo and Cam Cole who were so talented they played in just about every grade. Georgey Davey, Ally Young, Chugg, Sean Rosey and Brett ‘F*** Yeah’ Moore added spark not only running around our beloved Rawson paddock but perhaps most importantly in the Whalehouse sharing a couple of cans post-match. And lets not forget the ’09 Colts who added flair, energy and enthusiasm to the top two grades in their debut senior season. Guys like Biddy, Sam Dicko, Nick Towart, Rob Miller and Sulli played their guts out, and I hope they will be at the heart of 1st/2nd Grade for years to come. I firmly believe that the Colts are the life blood of the Whales, and this needs to be nurtured and managed to ensure ongoing strength and unity across the Club. One only has to look at the list of 1st & 2nd Graders over the past few years to see that most were ex-Mosman Colties. Despite the high expectations set last year, the Colts of 2010 have once again added another memorable chapter to the amazing story that is the Mosman Colts. A quick flick through the history books shows that over the past decade the Colts have taken home three major and five minor premierships, been runners-up in the grand final on four occasions and have never missed the finals! And having experienced being a Mosman Coltie myself, I honestly can’t imagine any other club that provides a more enjoyable rugby program for young men to be themselves and thrive, and this year has been no exception. JD and his entire coaching team have been crucial to this year’s success, as has the contagious commitment of ‘Old Colts’ like Sharkie, Crampo, Barney and Liam Tyndale. All you Colties are champions in your own right and I hope you stick around til you are grey and old! Sadly though, 2010 will also be remembered as a year of devastating injuries and unavoidable player departures. After starting the season so well and daring to dream of a Club Championship and even a Kentwell Cup, all was turned upside down around May/June, which at one point saw us staring down the barrel of relegation. Despite the grim mid-season state of the Club, heavily disrupted by wet weather, cancelled trainings, postponed games and jerks like the 2nd Grade second rower going away on an overseas trip and missing 3 rounds, we bounced back and almost snuck in to the top half of the Club Champs. Colts and 4th Grade made the Grand Final for the second year in a row, and 5th Grade and the Under 85kg team made the semi-finals. Congratulations to these teams on their solid achievements, and the entire Club for rallying so well at the back end of the season.

A special highlight of 2010 was most definitely the pre-season trip out to Orange in March. 30 blokes stacked the bus fresh on the Saturday morning, heading four hours west with a strong appetite for footy, beer and of course some quality country hospitality. With Al Hattersley, the former Mosman Junior player turned President of Orange Emus Rugby Club as our guide, the stars were definitely aligned for a good weekend. And a good weekend it was indeed, with most attendees claiming it as “highlight of the year”, and saying “can we go again next weekend?” after returning to Sydney. I’d like to thank the Emus for the games played, as well as the Hattersley’s for hosting us at the Union Bank Wine Bar on the Sunday, and serving us schooner sized glasses of 4 Wines. We can’t wait to back next year! That being said, I am still dreaming of an international tour, and hope that in 2011 the Whales can drum up a committed bunch of guys to carry on the touring traditions of the past. Finally I would like to finish with some thank you’s. To the coaches and managers, I thank you for your time and commitment to your respective teams. Coaching a side is never an easy job, but I know you guys do it because you love rugby and you love the Whales. I assure you that the players are extremely grateful for the time and effort you put in. To the quality Clubmen like Howesy, Ed Garner, Trent Matchett and Laous, who turn up to every training and social function, bust their backside for their team on game day and volunteer to help out wherever needed off the field, you fellas are legends. And by leading by example so well you make our Club great. And finally to the 2010 Committee, I thank you sincerely for the tireless, often thankless work that you have put in this year. Put simply, the Club would not survive without your loyalty, patience and wisdom. Once a Whale, Always a Whale. Alexander ‘Bru’ Breen Club Captain 2010

Club Coach Report Dear players, coaches, committee and supporters, The year started with a committed showing from old and new players at pre season training, and an enthusiastic coaching staff ready for the year ahead. Who would have predicted such an enormous injury toll throughout the season which would call upon players throughout the whole club to step up to the challenge ahead, which they did with extreme passion! This was evident with the club having teams make the semi finals and grand finals, and also finishing respectively in the club championship. The Whales have a fantastic group of players and dedicated people who tirelessly work behind the scenes to make the club one of the best places to play rugby, laugh and enjoy a few cold ones week in week out. There are a lot of people that deserve to be singled out for their performance throughout the year but I think we have had enough of presentations and celebration so let’s just leave it at that. Go the Whales in 2011. Libbo

1st Grade Report With plenty of new faces & a solid pre-season behind us we started the season well. We were very confident of a top 4 finish. Unfortunately it didn't turn out that way, we could trot out a bunch of excuses, but that wouldn't change the result. In the end we came up a couple of wins short of where we needed to be. If we can retain the majority of our players from this year & strengthen up a few positions as well as add some depth with some new players, I can't see why we can't win this so far elusive Kentwell Cup. Thankyou firstly to the players - we wouldn't have a club without them. On behalf of my fellow coaches Smythy & Libbo, I would like to thank every player who either stood by or took the field for us this year. I never thought it was a lack of effort that cost us any games this year & in the end that is all you can ask for. Thankyou to Smythy & Libbo ,we enjoy each others & the players company & I hope that comes through to the players & helps make it an enjoyable experience to be at our club. Thankyou to Doc for all his efforts in running the show again this year. I am reluctant to praise him too much due to all the recognition he has already received this year (it was all deserved). Thanks to the lower grade coaches for the time & effort they put into a sometimes thankless task. A big thankyou must also go to the committee for their support this year, especially Sullo, who wasn't afraid to crack the whip when he felt the need arose and also knew how to have a good time. It would be remiss of me not to mention our team skipper Howesy, who as usual led from the front & was a dominant force all year as can be told by his winning of the Subbies Kentwell medal. We all play or coach this game for enjoyment & I certainly enjoyed this year & hope to be involved with this great club again next year. Todd

2nd Grade Report After a promising start to the 2010 season beating Campbelltown away and drawing on the bell to with Colleagues, I definitely had high hopes for 2nd grade. Unfortunately the season didn’t pan out that way, with injuries in 1st and 2nd grade and others leaving the club, things really took its toll on depth. 2nds grade through the disruption of these external factors managed to still be a very competitive force in the competition and of the 11 losses throughout the year 9 games were under 12 points losing margin and of those 7 were under 8 points. The team was led well by Tim “4 sin bins in one year” Haren and Marty Wilson who really took a senior leadership role with the younger players stepping up to 2nd grade. I was most impressed with the effort the forwards played with during the year. Particularly Sam Dickinson who cemented his place in the hooker position, Alex Bray who plays well above his weight and gives his all every week, David Mulligan and Cam Cole were also strong during the year. Chris Walker also got better as the year went on and became a valuable member of the 2nd grade pack. Some great efforts of note were particularly against Knox at Knox, a very unlucky loss to Colleagues with a try disallowed to Rob Thorburn close to full time really showed the grit of this team. Nick Breen was a clear standout for the season in the pack. He was often called up to start in 1st grade and often played both games on a Saturday. His form and consistency as a player is something others should definitely follow. The lineout was also very strong in 2010, led by Alex Breen and Tom Chapman and Andrew Miller really stepped up this year and I think both should be pressing their claims to play at this level in 2011. The backs probably were the most affected with constant changes and suspensions. In the inside backs, Adam Rugg, Chris Cornforth and Rob Miller all had stints at 10. Ed Shillington was having a cracker of a year until he got injured. Laurent Olivier was a great pick up for the club and his goal kicking was a major asset to the team. Matt Holmes, Nick Towart and Ben Warnes for the most part formed the backline in 2’s and from set defence were rarely beaten. I would also like to thank Nick Wong, Simon Rae, Anthony Bowden, Andy Boivin, Sean Rose(sorry for missing people) and all of 3rds and colts for making themselves available. It is always hard to get everyone a run but for a club to function you need that support from reserves. Thanks Probably two things at the end of the year really cost 2’s from playing semi final football, it was taking the opportunities when they are offer. What separates good teams from great is their ability to convert pressure into points. We all probably know we failed to do this in 2010. The second is the ability to react on a turnover. We gave up the majority of tries this year from over half way. Defensively we are a good team and work for each other. What killed us was out ability to react after a mistake. If these two areas are addressed next year there is no reason why 2’s can’t become a successful and consistent winning side. I think on the whole there a lot of positives to come out of 2010, a lot of younger players got exposure to 2nd grade football, some players really took steps forward and would definitely see them moving through into 1st grade over the coming years I would like to thank Trent Matchett for his help during the year and Pom and Nathan Boyd (when he was there!) and Todd Hogan, Steve Lidbury and Paul Smyth for their support at training and during the year. Chris Hatfield

3rd Grade Report Our 2010 season can be described best in one sentence … started well, hit a mid season slump then finished strongly (apart from the very last game against Lindfield!). In our defence, there were some mitigating circumstances surrounding our season performance. The club had one of the worst injury runs I have witnessed in 12 years of playing. I think Laousy summed it up best when he was able to post on the website a near complete first grade team (with reserves) from all injuries! We witnessed players jumping from 3’s to 1’s in the space of a few days. With continual changes across all positions we just didn’t seem to be able to field the same combinations week in week out. Having a new backline every week doesn’t help your finals aspirations! Our mid season slump (a draw against Lindfield in Rd 9 followed by a loss to Forest in Rd 10 and another draw against Campbeltown in Rd 11) proved to be our real downfall. In the end just one point would have got us through to the finals, not to go through on a for and against difference is heartbreaking. We wish to thank all players who took part in the Whiddon Cup competition this year. It was a credit to all players who participated that we did as well as we did. Some people didn’t even know they were playing 3’s until a few hours before such were the issues with injuries right up to game day. Our Captain and half-back Andy Boivin was a worthy MVP in every sense. He performed admirably as player and captain and was an inspiration to all those around him. We wish Andy and Rachel every success in Auckland. Andy has been inspirational in all grades he has played over the years and Rachel has been a great supporter, you’ll both be missed. We had too many players go through our ranks to mention you all but a few worthy mentions;

• Ant Serventi, Ed Joris and Harry Sullivan all had a go in 3’s before jumping to 1’s (in my opinion Joris should have been in 1’s last year!).

• Corny for his on / off kicking (but he got the ones that counted!) and some great runs. • Luke Marley for his consistency, again he never let us done (and scored some great tries). • Our backrow, whoever was there performed, including the ever reliable Staggy & Messenger,

Alex P (before injury got the better of him!) and rookies Tim Ingate & Alex B (for a week or 2!). • Our tight 5 was awesome whoever was there … particular mention to Hagen who was one of

most improved and versatile in our front row! • And to all the 4’s and 5’s who came up and played when asked … many thanks!

On a final note, I am stepping down as a player and coach and wish all grades every success in 2011 and beyond … GO THE WHALES!! Terry

4th Grade Report In the early months of 2010, 3 new coaches stood together with aspirations of taking their team to grand final glory. Without any coaching experience the challenge was accepted, and after 18 rounds the result was 11 wins and 7 losses for a total of 317 points scored and 206 conceded. This was an indication of the skilled attack and strong and at times impenetrable defence that was drilled into this team by the 3 new bloods at the helm. 5 out of the 7 loses were by less than 7 and 4 of the wins were with a 4 try bonus points (which with only 25 minute halves is a great accomplishment) giving 4th grade a total of 9 bonus points for the year. One of the bonus point wins was against the minor premiers Colleagues which looked promising for the semi final campaign. Finishing 3rd on the ladder 15 points behind the leaders Colleagues (68) who year in year out are a benchmark in 4th grade, 3 points behind 2nd placed Drummoyne (56) and 3 clear of 4th Beecroft (50) meant we had to do it the long way through the finals. However with a year that was plagued with so many injuries not just in 4th grade but in every grade above us we were capable of facing adversity and had the confidence to overcome it. A team was picked in game 1, a strong young team with plenty of individual skill and talent that had the potential of being moulded into a winning team. A victory at home against Forest 24 - 11 was a great start and the beer sponsored by super coach Flude was cold and plentiful and on offer for every home victory. A couple of losses on the trot in games 2 and 3 to the always large and flamboyant Campbelltown 12 - 10 and favourites Colleagues 19 - 7 was not how we anticipated the start of the season. With a another new team playing together for the first time game 4 was the start of a 4 game winning streak whilst never fielding the same team for any of them. Beating Knox 17 - 0, the strong and aggressive Drummoyne impressively 26 - 15, Iggies on the only field in subbies that can handle the rain 19 - 7 and St Pats 17 - 3. Stand out performances by the new players to the team and the leadership of the stalwarts already playing 4th grade was showing that with the changes being made week in and week out that this team was keen to win. Round 8 was washed out and played later in the year against Beecroft who won 17 - 14 at their muddy and wet home ground. The last game of the first round saw us play Lindfield at the Whale House, and in front of the impressed Ladies Day Crowd come out victorious 17 - 0. Round 2 started with a heavy loss against Forest at Forest (not having to play on that field again brings a sigh of relief to every player in 1st division subbies) 15 - 10 with a try somehow being held up over the line under the post which could have given us the chance to win the game in the last seconds but the ref was on the spot and made the call. Still we are not going to have to play Forest next year, YOU BEAUTY. Losing to Campbelltown 17 - 11 in game 11 was very unfortunate but was turned around with 4th grade's game of the year against Colleagues in a mid week night game at Rawson winning 25 - 10, again with a new side that we were hoping to keep together for the remainder of the year. More changes being made throughout the club saw another new side taking on Knox and winning 19 - 7. A hard fought loss missing our 9,10 and 12 in game 14 away to Drummoyne 3 - 14 saw the team look within themselves and with some late changes beat Iggies 21 - 10 in game 15. A convincing win over St Pats 35 - 17 had the whole team, new and old players, knowing that the finals were coming up and that we needed to play our game fast in attack and strong in defence. Unfortunately Beecroft beet us again 15 - 12 at home the following week, with not a single player ever wanting to feel the way they did when they walked off the pitch the whole team and reserves arrived at training on Tuesday and Thursday knowing that the effort had to be stepped up if we were to win the comp. Training strongly helped and a win to finish off the regular season against Lindfield 30 - 17 saw us finish strong and with confidence going into the finals.

29

The Minor Semi against Beecroft was the closest game we had all year with the team picking a great time to knock them over for the first time during the season with a 6 -5 win. Beecroft tried to win the game on 2 occasions with penalty goal attempts but were unsuccessful both times. The kicking from our Captain, 2 from 2 was enough to get us over the line, and with the result of the other semi between Colleagues and Drummoyne still being played we sang our song with gusto so they could hear and know what to expect. In our next final Drummoyne never stood a chance, from the kick-off all players were covering the ground, making tackles, pilfering ball backing up, putting their bodies on the line and being witness to some of the best team rugby played all year. Winning 20 - 13 saw us sing our song again, and go into the grand final against Colleagues. The Grand Final was played at 9am and was looking to be the start we were hoping for. Lines were being broken, tackles were never missed and the pressure was being applied by the Whales but after 15 minutes our line was broken while our spirits remained intact. In the second half Colleagues managed to get across the line again but as in every game the side never gave up and hit back with a try. With all the Whales ball we had for the remainder of the game it was unfortunate that we couldn't cross the line before time ran out. Final score 8 - 15. It was an amazing effort from every team member in the final and throughout the year and the 3 new coaches could not be prouder. Looking back on the year through all the wins and losses we had 56 players in 4th grade alone. Overall, although we didn't finish with a Grand Final win it still felt like a successful season. With a great bunch of players who wanted to train, play and drink together and 3 rookie coaches we almost won a premiership. 4th grade 2010 felt like, and showed, the essence of the Whales spirit with great mateship, a desire to win and the comradery that goes with playing week in and week out win, lose or draw. Many thanks to everyone who played or stood by for our team during the season and for all the people behind the scenes who made sure that we could field a team each week. Cheers The Coaches

5th Grade Report 2010 saw another strong performance from 5th grade backing up from last year’s 2nd place in the competition. Many of the guy’s from last year backed up with a good influx of new guy’s adding to the team’s ability. The first half of the round saw us open strongly with wins against Campbelltown (15-0), Drummoyne (14-10), and narrow losses to Colleagues(0-6) and Iggies(5-13). We were well placed after eight rounds but the second half of the season saw some inconsistency creep in with 5 wins and three losses, which made us work for our spot in the finals. During the season a number of regular players were the backbone of the team with good combinations in the front and second rows good mobility in the back rowers and very good defence in the backs midfield and attacking skill in the back three. Craig Ross (Crackers) was a great steadying force in the centers with Tom Rees and Marty Thomas (The Ginger Ninja) really giving us great pace and attack on the wings. Marty scored two tries in the semi final blowing is hamstring as he scored the second try. Our venerable (does that mean old?) captain Gav Wicks (Wicksy) continued to lead the team with great mongrel and a work rate around the paddock that few could match. At times we had a very large team roster so much so that at the start of the season we could easily have fielded two 5th grade teams for a number of weeks. Just about everybody in the squad responded with great team spirit, putting what was best for the team in front of their own interests and I think that spirit continued throughout the season, guy’s did what they were asked to do. A big thankyou also goes to Adrian Walding the other 5th grade coach, who even strapped on the boots in the centers to help the team. Not sure if the wingers loved the drought that ensured but there were some beautiful hits and strong running from Adrian. It would have been great to make the GF again but it was not to be. The interesting thing I found was that when we won games, that was great but we always had an eye for where we wanted to be come finals time. When we lost we looked at what could have done better and were not satisfied with our own performance. When we went on the paddock there was an expectation that we would not only be competitive but be victorious. That kind of confidence is a collective spirit, you cannot coach it into people (wish I know how), they have to believe it, and I’m sure we will carry that winning mindset into next season. Cheers Heff

6th Grade Report As defending Halligan Cup premiers the 6s were always going to have a tough task repeating the success from 2009. An overall record of 11 wins, 5 losses and a draw saw the mighty 6s finish in 3rd place behind Colleagues and Convicts The most significant change in the off-season to the 2009 squad was a back office shift which saw James Haslam step into the coach's seat and Adam May take on the Captaincy, allowing Steve Jones to focus on his game - and what turned out to be one of his most productive seasons! The team benefitted from the return of many of the core from the 2009 team with two players, Matt Adam Smith and Ian Hannaford running out for their 200th and 150th Mosman games respectively which is a fantastic achievement. There was also new blood injected into the squad with the introduction of the big hitting Richard Wooten (voted most improved player) and the try scoring double act AKA "the Bruise Brothers" (John and Andy Hamilton) who combined for 11 tries (John being voted best newcomer by the players) The early rounds saw the 6s suffer from a Premiers hangover and an oversupply of players resulting in early losses to Colleagues, Convicts and Macquarie Uni. These losses ultimately proved critical to the campaign. After the first month of fixtures the squad gelled and the results began to flow leading to a 9 game unbeaten streak. The ever productive scrum led by a powerful back row of Royce Percival, Steve Hart and Glen Hanna laid a solid foundation for Nick Ridge allowing Ash Cole and Scott Hingston to direct the backline which included the dangerous centre tandem of Graeme Inglis (Players Player for the season) and John Hamilton The mid season stretch also included a road victory at the Blue Mountains where the boys enjoyed a bus trip and tour like atmosphere. A final round victory over 2010 Premiers Colleagues at Rawson was a great way to round out a great season. James Haslam

Colts Report “Lots of guys out this week, who should we make captain?” “Well, Dan Murray is actually the only player left from last year, so maybe he should get the job for this week”. Such was the tone of the conversation between Coaches in preparation for the sides 31 – 0 victory over Knox Old Boys in Round 13. So dramatic was the turnover of personnel, that 2010 saw the introduction of a largely new squad and with it, new personalities and a culture of it’s own. Earmarked as a rebuilding year, it was clear that for the Colts to be in any way competitive in 2010, the remaining members of the squad from 2009 had to all step up, new players had to be immediately able to make a positive contribution and recruitment would be the make or break factor. In the end, the way that the senior players all made enormous strides in their own Rugby development, including acting as our most effective recruiters, provided the squad with an opportunity to compete with and in fact, defeat every other side in the competition throughout the course of the season. Special credit naturally goes to Sharkey, who as Skipper led the side admirably and effectively melded the various peer groups into one coherent unit. However, recognition also needs to be given to players of the ilk of Vice Captain, Nick Crampton (Colts Medal finalist to boot), DVC Liam Tyndale and our spiritual leader, Barney Austin. All contributed to a team culture that encouraged players to actively recruit quality players, all too often, unfortunately only to replace others on the “season ending” injury list. As quality players such as Duncan Osborne, Arty Panov, Harry O’Neill and Liam Tyndale experienced all too much of the season as spectators due to injury, mid season recruits such as Ed Gregory, Ian Mack, Hugh Allerton & Alex Brown all made tremendous and immediate contributions to the Colties cause. We really hope all of these guys stick around. Similarly, our younger players were also instrumental in contributing to both our performance and team culture, with school boys Tom Burden (most improved) and Will Marshall (Clubs highest point scorer, 2010) juggling HSC preparation with dominant on field performances. Of course, one of the great advantages of dealing with such a young group is that the vast majority will still be Colts next year, giving Clyde and Dave (two of the great reasons for our success) a tremendous opportunity to go one better than we have over the last two years. I wish them both all the very best and leave Colts safe in the knowledge that their passion, commitment and preparation as coaches will set a standard that the playing group can only aspire to replicate. Their biggest challenge may well be finding a manager of the quality of the great Mark Dickinson, a key “under the radar” factor in our success. Ultimately, making the Grand Final was a great testament to the players commitment, discipline and ability with the incredible 42 – 8 pummeling of Colleagues in the Preliminary Final generally acknowledged by most observers as being ranked along with some of the all time great performances by an Mosman side in the Club’s proud history. Finally, thanks also to the parents for their fantastic support, especially our official photographer, Peter Coates as well as Josh Larsen, Bru, Doctor, Ferg and Bill Smyth Junior among a host of passionate devotees of the Colties. U85kgs Report As far as the standards we have previously set, the 2010 season was not a successful one for the Under 85kg Whales. We made the finals for the fifth year in succession however went down in a close semi to the new team from Eastern Suburbs, who went on to beat Beecroft in the final. But the season was successfully in terms of the spirit and fight in the team, and the rugby we played when we were switched on. It was the most even competition so far, with most teams capable of upsetting more fancied opposition. To be fair I think Mosman and Eora warriors (Lloyd McDermott) both slipped compared to 2009, and Beecroft returned below their previous best. We certainly started with the players to beat any side and win the comp but some of the new players didn’t commit regularly, and we definitely missed Fitzy and Draps when they went overseas, as well as Frenchy who was injured. Risty and Shirvo were also unavailable for the semi. In the forwards the stalwarts were Laous, Chappo, Paddy, Dicko, Cam, Greg, Jack and Virg plus cameos from Andy and Ed G. In the backs, Ant was the star newcomer and Andy Boivin lived up to expectations, at half or flanker!! Ed Garner also had a few guest appearances on the side of the scrum. Other regulars were Ed J, Holmesy, Risty, Woody, Beilbs, Reegs and Tim Hansen. Player Award – I think everyone would support the MVP Award to Laous, who also polled most B&F points, captained the team when Fitzy departed, and helped with team organisation before games and during the week, as well as playing every game in 1’s or 2’s during the competition season – and all that at slightly under 80 kgs!! Thanks to all the players who supported the concept of the Under 85’s and who enjoyed a Wednesday night run! Thanks also to the supporters who came along and cheered us on. A special thanks to captains Fitzy and Laous and the other players who shared leadership duties. It is hoped the Club continues to support Under 85’s. I believe a mid-week game is better than a training run, and as long as we aren’t targeting too many players in 1’s and 2’s, there is no detrimental impact to Saturday rugby – and not too many higher grade players make the weight anyway!! Also the regular U85 players are amongst the Club’s best trainers on Tues/Thur nights. With the Club’s support, we look forward to continuing the fun and success of Under 85kg rugby in 2011. Treasurer’s Report for the Year Ended 31 October 2010 The attached financial statements show a net loss for the year of $2,190 (2009: net profit $15,893). The 2010 result reflects difficult trading and fund raising conditions; it is also a reminder of the volatility in the club’s earnings. The return to loss in the current year is disappointing, particularly after having made a profit in the prior year. Whilst the Committee did work hard throughout the year, various factors including unfavourable weather conditions forcing more catch up games away from the bar and kiosk did have an impact. Bad weather also generally kept attendance down. This negatively impacted our bar and kiosk sales volume. An analysis of the key variances of the result between 2009 and 2010 is included in the following table: Item $ Variance Comments 2009 Net Profit 15,893 Sponsorship Income increase

8,500 Three new sponsors were acquired in 2010: Sportingbet, Savills and 4 Wines Orange.

Sponsorship Expenses reduction

6,000 The sponsorship agreement with Hotel Cremorne for 2010 did not have a provision for a stock “contra” account. Our sponsorship with Hotel Cremorne only covered a cash contribution.

Net Rugby Expenses increase

(1,641) Whilst the overall year on year change is not significant, some volatility was experienced within this area in 2010. Most notably, coaching expenses fell by $13,065, whilst rugby gear expenses grew by $15,252. The increase in rugby gear expenses was largely attributable to the player kit replacement in 2010.

Bar & Kiosk Trading profit reduction

(5,389) The fall in Bar & Kiosk profit was largely attributed to lower sale figures. Lower sales in turn were largely the result of a number of wet weather weekends which resulted in catch up games played during the week (hence little to no bar/kiosk trading was held over these games). Overall margin against sales remained reasonably consistent with prior year.

Club Apparel profit increase

1,171 In 2010 the Committee agreed to sell apparel at a margin to cost.

Supporters’ Lunch and Social Activities net reduction

(4,166) The reduction includes a $1,800 write off on a prize from the 2009 Supporters’ Lunch. The remaining difference reflects the variance in year on year fund raising. No significant fund raising social activities were held during the year (other than those otherwise described in this report). Better focus is required in this area for 2011.

Fundraising net reduction

(5,738) A major raffle did not attract attention/was not held in 2010. Similarly, fund raising from meat raffles and Entertainment books was not as successful this year as in 2009. Better focus is required in this area for 2011.

Presentation Night net reduction

(535) Change is not significant.

Tour net reduction (644) No formal tour happened in 2010. The tour funds covered in this section large relate to the Orange trial trip and the Bondi 10s competition. The club invested $825 for selected players to play in the Bondi 10s competition.

39

Item $ Reason for Variance Business 2 Business (B2B) contribution increase

217 Change is not significant.

Donation reduction (12,000) The Mosman Rugby Foundation provided funds for one player. These funds have been classified in the “net rugby expenses section”. No other donations were received in 2010. In 2009 the Mosman Rugby Foundation contributed $10,000 in funds to the club. The remaining $2,000 was contributed by a current year sponsor and an ex-player.

Prize Money reduction

(4,000) No prize money was won in 2010.

Sundry income increase

6,239 Largely reflects cricket sub-lease income for 2010 and accrual for 2011. The recognition in the current year differs from the prior year in that the 2011 lease due was billed and recognised in 2010. The effect of this is to have brought income forward however the recognition is factually correct as a bill to Mosman Cricket was sent prior to 31 October 2010.

Clubhouse expenses increase

(4,144) The increase in the clubhouse expenses primarily related to an increase in Rawson leases expense by $1,617, increase in repairs by $1,178 and $1,126 in expense relating to the club’s liquor licence (application fee and related training expense).

Depreciation expense increase

(219) Change is not significant.

Trophies expense reduction

2,253 This is in line with a lower number of teams in the premiership category for 2010 (relative to 2009)

Provision for doubtful debts expense increase

(1,500) Debtors in 2010 have increased substantially relative to 2009. Given the age of some of the debtors and the pending “off season” it’s appropriate a provision is established. To the extent receivables are recovered the provision can be reversed in 2011. No provision existed in 2009.

Member Badges, Bank Charges & Other expense increases

(2,487) In 2010 the club purchase member badges to the value of $741. This no such expense was incurred in 2009. Bank charges also increased by $660 due to the introduction of the PayPal facility.

2010 Net Loss (2,190) I would like to thank the club’s sponsors, particularly our major sponsor Hotel Cremorne, and to our new sponsors who have contributed this year. The support of our sponsors is critical to the ongoing success of the club. I’d like to also thank the Committee for its hard work in 2010 and wish them all the best for the coming season. Whilst the club has returned a net loss for the year, all things being equal, there is a good opportunity for a turnaround in 2011. Our results can, and are, volatile due to the nature of our organisation. Continued focus, vigilance and accountability will help manage this volatility. The club, as well as I, hope for a successful season next year, both on and off the field. Radu Dumitru Honorary Treasurer
