Editor’s Letter

Welcome to the Debut Issue of our new Mossman publication, which I hope will inspire you in many ways and help you to embrace the trends of Winter 2011.

As Aussies we spend eight months of the year dreaming about the summer sun, the heat, the beach and cozzies... yet we have a love affair each year with the supremacy of winter fashion.

This year is no exception and it certainly won’t disappoint. In fact it may be perhaps the best we’ve seen with accents of luxe fabrics such as leather, lace and faux fur, minimalist silhouettes in subdued colour palettes then contrasting black with injections of vibrant colour.

Capes and unusual knits have also made a comeback and finally a strong emphasis on to-die-for accessories such as over the knee socks, oversized envelope clutches and amazing bright turbans. Truly inspiring! Which brings me to the theme of this issue; ‘Inspiration’. Its mind blowing to know just how many great concepts come to life across the globe, which largely go unnoticed. Each issue we will highlight some of the ones that make us stop and gaze in amazement.

Whilst we know we may never spend $1500 a night on boutique accommodation, be able to paint like Picasso or have a library like Karl Lagerfeld’s, inspiration can be taken from anywhere and adapted into something that works for each of us.

We also take a look into the world of computer whizzes turned front-row fashionistas and style muses: the fashion blogger. They show us how to adapt runway looks into everyday style. This is more pertinent this year than any other because for the first time in a long time, the number one fashion trend is not about having the ‘it’ piece of the season, but instead about layering and styling.

You’ll notice once looking at catwalks, magazines and blog sites that mixing and matching pieces in your own individual way is ruling fashion at the moment and we can’t be happier. Of course there will always be trends for us to follow to lead us in the right direction but don’t be scared to make it your own!!

Finally the most exciting section is that where we showcase some highlight pieces from the Mossman Winter 2011 Collection.

We hope you’ll love the styles as much as we do, which will soon be available worldwide with the launch of our website and online store debuting shortly. This is such! an exciting time for fashion, artistry and individuality and we couldn’t be more excited that Mossman will now be in amongst that. At a time when, well, banks are breaking up... the world is just about to begin its love affair with Mossman.

THE TRENDS YOU NEED TO LIVE ANDBREATHE FOR WINTER 2011!

SHEER BEAUTY

Sheer fabric is emerging as one of hottest fashion trends of 2011... and no we haven’t got out seasons mixed up! Yes, sheer pieces are in for the cold months, but it’s not all about tight, see- ‐through tops, and dresses that scream ‘look at me’, but rather about a mixing elegance with sex appeal and having the confidence to mix your sheer clothing with other trends and key looks such as lace and leather. In particular we love the feminine drapey pieces that are used for layering. Our pick of the range is the Mossman ‘Haute Pursuit Shirt’ – due to hit stores in April. This shirt features an oversized silhouette and is made from a delicate sheer crinkled silk with hand beaded diamontes. Team it with the ‘When Darkness Falls Corset’ and ensure you button it all the way up to the collar!

Ladylike dressing takes a dazzling new turn this season, thanks to a palette of neon shades and the explosion of colour. A major trend on overseas catwalks for Spring 2011 was vibrant colour blocking in rich, bold jewel tones.

For those of us who just can’t wait until spring to dabble into this inspring trend, then try Mossman’s sheer pleated skirtsteamed with vibrant crop tops and oversized box knits.

Nearly Nude

Page 9: Mossman

Nearly NudeFluid, soft and draped fabrics

in second‐skin shades present an elegant alternative to the

seasons rainbow brights. Interest is added with texture

such as leather and lace.

Capturing the trend of a subdued colour palette and contrasting textures is the

Mossman Impossible Choice Dress as pictured right.

It features beautiful heathered fabrication, clean line lapels and a stunning organza sheer back.

AMAZING...

Page 10: Mossman

It’s no great co‐incidence that the popularity of Mad Men has coincided with a resurgence in early 60s fashion. The strong return of this aesthetic fosters femininity and is versatile and fun. Aptly named the ‘Mad Woman’ dress Mossman has created the ultimate in hourglass dressing with a cinched waist and full circle skirt. Adding a twist to this classic silhouette is the stunning wool blend yarn with a colourful woven floral

pattern. Add a bright belt and ankle boots for a modern take or a neutral belt and heels for a more classic, feminine approach. Either way you’ll set heads turning!

Page 11: Mossman

It is time (for now) to put to bed those open revealing collars. Fashion, as fashion always does, has taken a pendulum swing in the other direction, hitting instead refined sophistication. Whether its a sheer blouse, or elegant shirt dress – the only way to wear it in 2011 is to button it up. ALL the way up. The brilliant thing

about the done up collar as a new trend, is that its simple, required nothing at all and is tran-seasonal. Don’t forget its sexiness is rooted in its modesty and the air of confidence you exude when wearing it.

Add a bowtie for a fun, playful feel.

Capes. Say the word, and images of masked superheroes midflight are what immediately pops into many people’s minds.

But capes have existed, in one variety or another, through much of human history and again, they have made a major comeback on the streets of late, mainly due to the strong inclusion in Autumn / Fall fashion shows, the capes returns for this year’s colder months.

Seen on the catwalks of Halston and Preen, amongst others, capes in their various forms will be amongst the most elegant of fashion trends. And yet it doesn’t have to be. Capable of being mixed up and styled in a plethora of ways, this is a style that will suit both high fashion and those days when you just want to throw something on.

For those wanting a feminine girlie version – watch out for the Mossman‘Navajo Cape’ in pink. For something a little more daring we have the same cape but in a wool blend with a woven Aztec design, then finally the ‘In The Dark of Night’ Cape featuring gold studs along the shoulder for more of a glam look. ! All in stores April/May.

Page 13: Mossman

It’s no great secret that the humble leather jacket has become a wide - spread wardrobe staple over the last few winters.

As a fashion trend in 2011 however, women’s leather clothing is being taken to a whole new level. Instead of a simple jacket or vest, we are now seeing a plethora of leather dresses, trousers and shorts. While it’s certainly the luxe must have addition to your winter look, it is sure to serve well in your wardrobe for years to come, so if ever there was a time to dust off your favourite vintage purse and splurge... this is it!

Page 14: Mossman

We prefer faking it, but there’s no doubt about the everlasting appeal of fur. Affectionately named ‘The Chubby’, this year the silhouette is a straight cut, mid length and voluminous. It is often sported by the likes of Kate Moss and Rachel Zoe. Throw it over a mini dress for a glam look or simply over jeans and a tee for an everyday casual feel. It is best balanced out by minimal volume on the bottom, like tights or

skinny leg jeans. Also falling under the banner of this trend is the bohemian or Russian folk look.

This incorporates lots of long line layering with soft maxi skirts and oversized sheer shirts and knits. So what if the jacket is just too much for you?? Mossman has the perfect solution – accessorise with a fur

snood instead. Both jacket and snood available in all Mossman stores April/May.

Page 15: Mossman

If it has ever been out of fashion I don’t remember it, which is another way of

saying that white blonde, or platinum, hair colour is a trend for the year.

It’s all about setting yourself apart from the crowd.! So, with or without dark roots?! Although this trend evolved last year,

it is still certainly hanging around.

Don’t underestimate the low maintenance as well as your hairs’ health when opting

for darker roots.

That said, if it is an option, and money is no objective (as maintenance is high), then forgo the dark roots and opt for a full head

of platinum/white blonde hair. It’s bold, clean and striking. Ensure great product is used to preserve the health of your hair.

The Rise And Rise Of The BloggerEvery decade has its style icons. In the 60s bohemian stars like Janis Joplin ruled the stage and Twiggy started a revolution in style, while the 80s were about the supermodel era with the likes of Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista.

It’s now only the beginning of a new decade, and with so much talk of social media on everybody’s lips, it seems like this is the age of the style blogger to rise as the new icons of the decade!

If you were at Christian Dior couture Spring 2011 show you would have seen 14 year-old fashion blogger Tavi Gevinson with silver hair and a turban, in the front row along with Kylie Minogue and Anna Wintour. She began her blog ‘Style Rookie’ at the age of 11 and now has 54,000 daily readers and

is a guest writer for Harpers Bazaar. Other well known bloggers such as Rumi Neely from fashiontoast.com are now collaborating with the likes of Forever 21 as a guest stylist and co-designer on their new range.

High profile style bloggers are enjoying new found fame these days, largely because its so nice to be able to look up and imitate women (or girls in the case of Tavi) that are shopping the cyber world, re-working vintage pieces and emulating

runway trends on a budget for a change. These bloggers are writing about cheaper finds from Ebay to H&M and mixing with pricier designer pieces. While us women will never be bored with flipping through the pages of Vogue and Harpers Bazaar, we can’t afford the $3000 price tag that comes along with so many of the amazing looks. Bloggers however, help toshow women how they can apply high fashion to their daily wardrobe

The 2011 Hot List

The new, the quirky and the downright cool hunted from around the globe….

ARCHITECTURE!

The latest concept in space saving accommodation….. Stacked housing!!

Page 57: Mossman

Reaching five storeys in height and containing 12 separate houses, Vitra House is geared toward the general public, design-aware consumers who will appreciate the building as well as the design inside.

The Basel-based architecture firm Herzog and Meuron, established who bought us the design of the Beijing Olympics’ “Bird’s Nest has done it again.

Introducing the new home of Vitra’s Home Collection, which has been covered widely by design media, and not in vain. It is a beautiful example of Jacques Herzog’s and Pierre de Meuron’s ability to take the stacked-houses concept and make it look new, interesting and inviting.

COOLEST. STAGE. EVER.

Love the theatre? Love travelling?? Why not combine the two and visit the Bregenzer Festspiele (Bregenz Festival).

This is a high class performing arts festival which is held every July and August at Lake of Constance, Austria. Founded in 1946, the festival presents is renowned for the unconventional staging of musical productions on a floating stage to an audience of 7,000 people. The waters of the lake are used as an extension of the stage. Pictured below is a scene from Verdi’s Opera ‘A Masked Ball’.

PHOTOGRAPHY

COOLEST. STAGE. EVER.

Sofia Ajram is a Montreal based graphic design student, wowing the world with her fashion inspired photography which can best be described as a journey into the world of magic. She grew up surrounded by occult books which has led to this dark yet inspiring direction. She has been quoted as saying ‘I loathe the kind of photography that is just a shot of something beautiful. I can’t stand it, it’s so stagnant. Not that it doesn’t end up being beauBful as a final result, and that it shouldn’t be deemed as ‘art’, but I love work that tells a story. If not tell a story or cycle your viewer’s imagination, then to me there is no real value in fashion photography. I like darker themes because it’s what has yet to be explored: the unknown’. Check out her new blogspot http://wefindwilderness.blogspot.com for more of her amazing work.

AdvertisingAre you obsessed with the right things??

These are the words used for the Breast Foundation of Singapore’s new print campaigns. However it is the images and not the words that draw attention to this quirky approach.

Using Kryolan body paint, illustrator Andy Yang

So demonstrated using a woman’s body as his canvas, that perhaps women should focus a little more attention on their health rather than obsess about pimples and bad hair days. We love this because it’s so different and any initiative that raises awareness for this cause is great. !

Film

The latest movie receiving an abundance of media hype is titled W.E and features our very own Abbie Cornish as the central character. So why are we bracing ourselves for this movie in particular? It’s because it ’s the latest directorial project undertaken by the queen of pop, Madonna.

Cornish plays the central contemporary character of Wally Winthrop, a unhappily married New Yorker. The movie tells the parallel stories of the affair between King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson which led to the royal’s abdication, and Cornish’s character, a woman with romantic problems of her own as well as an obsession with the life of the Duchess of Windsor. The film was shot last year in New York, London and Paris but very little has been seen by the media.

As could be expected the Madonna camp are keeping very quiet about the details of the film at this stage, with critics ready to pounce on what they hope to be another directorial disaster, and die‐hard fans ready to leap to her defence. Keep an eye out for a cameo appearance by her daughter Lourdes. W.E is set for release mid‐year.

ArtFor those of us who have timedly dabbled in painting, then prepare to be particularly infuriated and equally astounded by French artist Francoise Nielly. Her paintings are expresive, vivid and passionate. Using oils

and a painting knife, she paints her canvases from black and white images by applying brilliant colours and daring strokes. Check out the video posted on her site to see how these amazing works of art are created.

MusicAdele.... you may not know what she looks like, or even know her music, although given a snippet of her soulful songs to listen to and you’ll surely sense some familiarity. With the release of her second album ‘21’ and single ‘Rolling In The Deep’, she has become the first living artist since the Beatles in 1964 to have two titles simultaneously in the top five of both the U.K singles and album charts.

The 22 year-old English songwriter, who snagged a Grammy for her first album in 2008, has done it again and produced yet another album full of dark bluesy tunes and received rave reviews for her work.

This is first-ever, bank concept store for BNP Paribas in Paris, created by Paris-based architect Fabrice Ausset of Zoevox. This far-reaching concept bank is located in the historical building of 2, Place de l’Opéra, Paris. The space is full of completely wild un-bank features, yet it also has a nice retro touch that gives it the elegance and respectability that the building’s history warrants and the bank’s business must convey.

In ten specific zones, all regular banking functions from daily banking to stock-market info, private meetings, staff training can take place with the emphasis on breaking the age-old banking set-up where the client and theadviser (the teller, the banker) are on opposite sides.

All of this plus a temporary exhibition area dedicated to kids as well as a coffee bar all set the tone for the unusual banking experience.

Now, can we all expect our neighbourhood banks to change? NAB now I think I’m breaking up with you....

Banks are making headlines in recent months... and, as per usual, not for the right reasons.

Customers are fed up with bad service, high fees and charges and hidden costs. Well maybe we wouldn’t mind all this if our banks looked like this!

Once you EAT at Easy Tiger you’ll PRAY for more because youcan’t help but LOVE it!!!

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Page 67: Mossman

The latest newie on the food scene is Fitzroy’s Easy Tiger. For so long it was a struggle to find a great place to eat in the area, and now we’re spoilt for choice with Anada, Gigibaba, Claypots, Lladros,Huxtable and Josie Bones all withina one block radius. The one cuisine missing from the all star line-up was Thai...but you can get great Thai from a number of places right? Right... but not Easy Tiger style Thai. Chef Jarrod Hudson guides the culinary classic style into something modern, fresh and oozing theatre, certainly venturing well beyond the Pad Thai paradigm.

The menu has been developed to encourage the sharing of dishes and communal dining. It features 8 bite size starter dishes with the highlight being the ma hor: prawn, pork and chicken mince cooked in palm sugar and served on fresh pineapple – what perhaps sounds like an unusual marriage but a combination that works perfectly.

For mains there are an equal number of options and having tried 3 of the dishes it was difficult to pick a winner as all excelled in delivering the faultless flavours and textures you come to expect after such great entrees.

Traditionally speaking desserts are not usually an important part of the menu for many Asian inspired restaurants.

Well here is the exception.... Pandan Leaf Dumplings filled with Monsieur Truffe French chocolate, swimming in a warm salted coconut broth dotted with tiny basil seeds and camoflouged among a huddle of melon balls. This is all i dare say as you must treat your tastebuds to this phenomenon.

Erin Wassen is amongst our favourite ‘It Girl’ models. Uniquely versatile she has walked the runway for virtually every A-List designer from Lagerfeld, Gucci, Lanvin, Chloe, Wang and Balenciaga just to name a few, and has graced the covers of countless fashion magazines worldwide. Known throughout the industry for her low-key, chic boho style, Wasson is effortlessly cool and is often featured in style blogs. It was no wonder when she teamed up with famed jeweller Pascal Mouawad, their jewellery line Low Luv immediately became so sought after in the states, and now in Australia.

Inspired by Wasson’s travels, the pieces are almost like artefacts from her trips. Metalwork conjures traditional Mexican handicraft, etched symbols suggest ancient Native American glyphs and bold statement necklaces feel timelessly tribal. Wasson’s distinctive style is evident in each piece, putting a modern spin on age old inspiration.

Available in Mossman Heidelberg beginning February

The label ‘Mr Grey’ stems from Jess’s first child hood horse and best friend. He was an amazing and handsome creature that caught everyone’s eye, and now her jewellery is emanating that same charm and grace.
