I write this letter as I begin my last week, so today has already been filled with many emotions. I felt them keenly as I celebrated morning mass with all the people who are there so faithfully ever day. But it is with an eye toward my last weekend, the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity, that I write now. It’s hard to share all that’s in my heart and all that I would like to say to you, but the feast of the Holy Trinity is the perfect Feast to culminate 43 years of priesthood and 10 years here with you as Pastor. It’s all, all about “relatio,” the Latin word for relationship. That’s

what the Feast of the Holy Trinity is all about and that’s what our lives are all about, as individuals, families, friends, community, and church! It is who we are as created in the image and like-ness of God, whose Being is Community, three per-sons, One God. It is that image and likeness in which we were created we hear in the very story of creation. I cannot know who I am except in terms of my relationship to God and you. I am defined by that

“relatio.” And I can only live out and experience my destiny in rela-tionship. That is the template and pattern of life in which I have grown up and matured as a person, and as a priest. It is the image and template we are given about life, about God, us, and the church. It was that image of church that was sharpened and refocused by the Second Vatican Council. We are talking about a “relational” model of church. I have tried to live my life in faithful-ness to that vision and to serve and lead this parish, and any parish I have ever served, out of that model. So it’s all been about leading people into a relationship with God in Christ and with each other in Christ, where we find, know, and experience the Living God, in the Church, in the relationship of the human community of Being. Jesus tells us in the gospel today that we are Baptized into it, into the life of the Trinity, and commissions us to bring all people into the divine “relatio.” It has been and is my joy to have experienced that with you here, and in my whole life wherever I have served, and it is the vision out of which I will continue to live my life with you and with all people. I Thank You with all my heart for welcoming me into your hearts and homes, and for us to have come to know Jesus in “relatio” here at the Eucharist and in breaking the bread of our daily lives, and in the breaking of the bread of the Word which calls us into relatio, heals, and restores relatio. It is in the relationship of the Body of Christ that we will always be connected and have access to one an-other in the Spirit. It is my hope and joy to have shared that with you for the last ten years and look forward to sharing that with you into eternity! May God Bless you and yours with the abundance of God’s Love, with gratitude and love,

Dear Friends,

“So it’s all been

about leading people into a relationship with God…”

For Fr. Joel:

The Voice by Shel Silverstein

There is a voice inside of you that whispers all day long, "I feel that this is right for me, I know that this is wrong." No teacher, preacher, parent, friend or wise man can decide what's right for you - just listen to the voice that speaks inside. Love, The Liturgy Ladies Questions to Ponder: What images of the activity and character of God come to you in today’s readings? Paul calls us “heirs of God “if only we suffer with him.” When have you “suffered with him”?

Faith and Formation Commission– Adult

As we humans age and develop into adult-hood, every dimension of our being has opportu-nity to mature and grow. Our physical bodies change and mature. As we feed our intellect, we are capable of understanding things at new and more advanced levels. We are able to develop and sustain social relationships at a different level than those of children. And we are able to take on responsibilities and challenges of life that would have been far more difficult as chil-dren We are also able to move toward a more mature spirituality. This is the responsibility we assume when we are confirmed in the Catholic faith. As we pre-pare for the Sacrament of Confirmation, we are called to step into adulthood with regard to our faith. We must be willing to freely profess the Catholic faith and be willing to be a witness for Christ. Confirmation is not a graduation cere-mony. Continuing to study and advance the cause of Christ should be considered a life-long effort. We can never know everything there is to know about God.

This one’s for you! It’s Pentecost again – the outpouring of the Holy Spirit! We’re offered so much of it so that it not only fills us up but spills out of us to share with others. As you each prepare to sign up for ministries this year, please keep in mind these ways you can share your faith: ALPHA – An introduction to practical, everyday Christianity. A 10-week series on Wednesdays of dinner, a topical video and small group discussion. ALPHA needs people for both consistent and occasional roles: kitchen overseer, meal provider, hospitality, table host or prayer facilitator. Baptism Preparation – How best to get a growing family off to a good start in the life of faith? Assist in monthly baptism preparation sessions (you choose how often), or serve as a baptism host some Sundays, wel-coming and assisting families. Mentoring provided. Marriage Preparation – Be part of a team preparing and grounding couples in beginning and sustaining a Catholic marriage. Marriage Preparation Retreats (offered 3x per year) need “day of” help for hospitality. Also urgently needed are “mentor couples” who meet 2-3 times with engaged couples to talk about and share experiences on the joys and challenges of married life. Training and support provided. Marriage Enrichment – It’s a date! A couple is needed to facilitate the ALPHA Marriage Course on the second Friday evening September through April. Par-ticipant couples sit at ‘tables for 2’ for dinner, a video and private discussion of topics aimed at strengthening and sustaining marriages. Materials provided. RCIA – The Rite of Christian Initiation welcomes and prepares adults seeking to become part of the Catholic Church. Catechists are needed as part of a team to share faith with these candidates. Mentoring provided. Are you open to the Spirit’s nudge to check these out further or to make a commitment? Please contact Chari Rosales in the Adult Faith Formation Office at 630.355.8980 x138 or [email protected]. Or go to www.stapostle today and sign up online!

St. Thomas parishioner John Zimnie has been a mem-ber of the Ignacian Volunteer Corp for four years. He will be a presenter at the meeting announced below.

(Father John Surette, SJ, consistently unfolds the Gospel message in light of “green spirituality”. Below is an excerpt from his May 20 homily. Go to www.csjthewell.org for the entire homily.)

“As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world.” (John 17:18)

Back in the sixties our Church experienced its “Second Vatican Council.” This Council corrected this false understanding of the world. The world that the Council had in mind is exemplified by the following quotes from the Council’s docu-ments: The world is “the world of women and men, the entire human family seen in its total environment.” It is the world “which has been created and is sustained by the love of its maker.” It is the world that needs “to be fashioned anew according to God’s design and brought to its fulfillment.” These quotes are packed with truth and meaning for us in our modern times. “The world of women and men, the entire human family seen in its total environment”…its total environment…in other words, not just the human world but also the world of the mountains and rivers, the air and the soils, the plants and animals…everything and everyone constitute one world.
