Bishop of Savannah 830 Poplar Street | Macon, Georgia 31201 478-745-1631 | 478-745-2254 (FAX) https://stjosephmacon.wordpress.com/ Dear Parishioners, In the first reading, Jeremiah feels the world closing in on him. He has been a good prophet for the Lord, he has preached the message of repentance to the people, and yet he is persecut- ed for his work and sacrifices. Those who were his friends are watching him closely to overthrow him and to bring his ministry and his life to an end. Jeremiah was a Christ-figure who was willing to lay down his life for truth and goodness, and would suffer tremendously for it. In the Gospel, Jesus says to not be afraid of those who can kill the body, but instead who can kill the soul. How difficult it must have been for both Jesus and Jeremiah to remember those words in the midst of their sufferings and crosses. They provide good examples for us when our crosses seem heavy and unbearable. A great devoon for us in the midst of our hardships is the Staons of the Cross. Just sing near a parcular Staon, or to walk through the whole of them can help us to remember that Jesus walked the same path we are walking. May we always have hope and perseverance even when our path is difficult. May God bless you always. Fr. Dear Parishioners, In the first reading, Jeremiah feels the world closing in on him. He has been a good prophet for the Lord, he has preached the message of repentance to the people, and yet he is persecut-ed for his work and sacrifices. A great devotion for us in the midst of our hardships is the Stations of the Cross. Just sitting near a particular Station, or to walk through the whole of them can help us to remember that Jesus walked the same path we are walking. May we always have hope and perseverance even when our path is difficult. May God bless you always. Fr. Winchel

Car Seat Safety

In honor of Children’s Awareness Month take a look in your backseat to see how

safe you are keeping your most precious cargo! According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 8 out of 10 child safety seats are used

incorrectly.

Here are some tips to help keep your children safe:

Choose a seat that is right for the size and age of your child and your vehicle Read the directions for installation in both the car seat instruction manual

and the vehicle owner’s manual Use caution with “used” car seats. They may be expired (most expire every

6-10 years), recalled, missing key parts, or in a crash and no longer safe for use

Keep infants rear facing in the backseat until they reach the maximum height and weight for their car seat (about two years)

Retainer clips or “chest clips” should be at armpit level Harness straps should be flat or untwisted and fit snugly so you cannot

pinch any slack A child is not big enough to graduate from a booster until a seat belt sits low

and across the child’s hips (not across their stomach) and the shoulder strap should not sit across their neck or face (usually between 8-10 years old)

Make sure everyone in the car is buckled up. Unbuckled adults and pets can become projectile during a crash and injure others in the car

Buckle up and keep your precious cargo safe!

Mass Etiquette / Dress

With the arrival of Summer, please remember to dress modestly for Mass. If we

were invited to a gala event, we wouldn’t dress as though we were going to the beach. Christ Himself has invited us to partake in the

sacred banquet of the Eucharist. Our attire and our reverent actions should reflect where

we are and Whose we are. Dressing extremely informally or revealing is

distracting and disrespectful. Dressing up for Mass is certainly not “out of date.” Parents

should also monitor their children’s dress for Mass. Always remember to be clean, neat,

and modest when attending Mass.

Do Not Be Afraid

Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. (Mt 10:28)

Fear is a universal experience.

Sometimes fear of other people, or their disapproval, leads us to act against our

religious beliefs. Jesus cautions us to put our fear where it belongs: we should

fear the loss of eternal life far more than we fear the threats of human beings,

mortal and accountable like ourselves.

Back To “Ordinary” Time!

This weekend marks the return to Ordinary Time on the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church, after having spent the previous 16 weeks in Lent/Holy Week (5 Sundays of Lent plus Palm Sunday), Easter (7 Sundays), Pentecost, Most Holy Trinity, and Corpus Christi. We now have a little more flexibility in the choice of hymns to be sung at Mass. We also put away for a while the more festive Mass of Creation and return to the Missa Simplex. There are a multitude of Mass settings--music composed for the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus (Holy, Holy), Memorial Acclamation, Great Amen, and Lamb of God--available from our three major Catholic publishing houses, so many that there are not a lot of settings that are common to a large number of parishes. The Mass of Creation is one that a large number of parishes sing at one time or another as are the Latin Mass setting we use during Lent (Jubilate Deo) and the New Roman Missal chants that we sing during Advent. According to a recent study done by the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, the Missa Simplex is also near the top of “most sung” Masses across the country, although it is used by less than 50%. There are many settings that are only used by one or two parishes in the US! We hope that as you travel and visit other churches you will at least occasionally find yourself in a church using a Mass setting that is familiar to you and that many visitors to our parish will be familiar with the ones that we use.

Ad majorem Dei gloriam!

STEWARDSHIP “Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed,” Jesus tells us in the Gospel today, “and nothing hidden that

will not become known.” May our stewardship of God’s gifts be such that we would not be ashamed if it were seen in the clear light of day.
