Where would the Yandavale herd be today if it wasn’t for its Wynne’s.A story of being in the right place at the right time.
Great Aussie cow families
Wynne wasn’t one of the 60 drafted out for us to look at. She was a rising two-year-old forward springing on the other side of the fence. The purchase of this animal somewhat took priority over the other 60. After finding out a bit more about her it turned out I already owned her dam, Robinvale Sambo Wynne VG85 H, who was a cow I bought out of the paddock from them the year before.
The pressure was put on Frank to sell Imps Wynne but he wouldn’t budge, he’d just say. “You’ve got 60 others here to take home you don’t need her.” We left Robinvale with the purchase of 60 head of cattle and no Imps Wynne.
It wasn’t until I made the final call to the Boyd’s to organise transport that Frank said. “We’ll make the invoice out for 61 head alright. I replied “No only 60”.
We commenced our dairying business in 2004 with the
purchase of 61 head of cattle from Frank and Fay Boyd “Robinvale Jerseys” one of which was Robinvale Imps Wynne Ex92 STP (but not without badgering).

Kingdom who was a son of Carnation Excell King out of Robinvale Roz Starlight VHC90. SK Wynne had Robinvale Sambo Wynne 85pts-2yrs sired by Lester Sambo (full sister to Sambo Wynne 2 EX91).
Sambo Wynne had Robinvale Imps Wynne EX92 STP7. She is sired by a homebred bull Robinvale Vanitys Imperial. He was a J Imperial son out of Aluna Sultans Vanity EX13 (this was a cross of two of Robinvale’s best bloodlines).
Imps Wynne has two sisters, Yandavale Brazo Wynne 87@2yr and Yandavale Golden Wynne EX91.

We currently aren’t milking any grand-daughters of Imps Wynne. Imps Wynne at the age of 10 still resides at Yandavale and is on every 6wk flush program. Robinvale Imps Wynne has pregnancies due 2013 by Tequila, Hired Gun, Resurrection, Guapo, Iatola and Celebrity.
Frank replied “that other scrubber you wanted found her way into the mob this morning and I can’t be bothered getting her out. We were so excited and it was the beginning of a wonderful journey with a great cow.
The Wynne’s can be traced back to the cow Glen Opal Goldilocks who was bred by Jim Freidland and Sons of Obi Obi Road Kenilworth Queensland (dispersed June 2012). Frank & Fay Boyd purchased her in a line of cows when they commenced dairying at Nuesavale in 1969. She was only classified fair as a heifer.
The family name then changed to White Socks with the birth of her first heifer calf which had 4 white socks. Robinvale White Socks had three daughters Robinvale Wynne (1977), Wilma and Wenone.
These were the foundation animals for the branches of the ‘W’ families in the Robinvale herd.
In 1982 Robinvale Wynne had Sydneys Wynne VHC90 by Kakariki Sultans Sydney (NZ). She was purchased ($570) by Lloyd Granzien in 1987 in the first of the Robinvale Herd dispersals. Lloyd had informed Frank and Fay that he was not completely happy with his purchase as Sydneys Wynne was a bit stampy in the walk through so when the Boyd’s started up dairying again in 1990 they bought her back for $400.
She had Robinvale SK Wynne 84pts- 2yr (1992) sired by Glen Echo Star
Robinvale Imps Wynne is the most decorated show cow in the Yandavale herd winning Supreme Cow Gympie 2006, Reserve Champion Cow Gympie 2007, Champion Cow Brisbane 2008, Honourable Mention 2009, Champion Cow NSW Dairy Spectacular 2009 and her biggest achievement was Champion Cow Northern Challenge 2009.
Her progeny are proving themselves in the showring also with Yandavale Resurrection Wynne 2-ET winning Supreme Intermediate at Gympie show 2012. There was seven direct descendants of Imps Wynne at Gympie Show 2012 to receive four firsts, two seconds and one third placings.
The Wynne’s are an above average production family with seven milking Wynnes with an average PI of 102 in a 140 milkers (40% Holstiens). Robinvale Imps Wynne holds the four-year-old milk record in Queensland - 9240L - 4.4% 402kgF - 3.8% 351kgP - 305d.

Warren runs the farm by himself and milks 240 pure-bred Jerseys which average 5800 litres a year at about five per cent fat and 3.7 per cent protein. He supplies the Murray Goulburn co-op.
He says he doesn’t have time to compete in show rings. But he enjoys competing in both Jersey and inter-breed on-farm challenges, where he can benchmark his herd against the best in his region, and discuss breeding with other farmers.
Warren’s all-Jersey herd grazes on 140ha he leases near Yarram, three hours east of Melbourne and 20km inland from Victoria’s south-east coast.
He also grows fodder on a 60ha block he leases five kilometres from his main farm, and has recently purchased another 70ha only a kilometre away where he grows rye grass and maize.
He does not irrigate, but says he can grow plenty of feed when Yarram receives its 650mm average annual rainfall.
“The main thing is to try and grow enough feed to keep the girls happy for 12 months of the year,” he says.
This was tough in the early years of this century when the area had five or six years of low rainfall, but last year he had perhaps a little too much rain.
Warren grew up in Yarram, and spent about half his childhood on dairy properties share-farmed by his parents Allen and Ann.
He did a dairy apprenticeship when he left school, and share-farmed before he leased the land near Yarram.
He started the Carla Rose stud there with a herd of Jerseys he saw advertised in Cobden. “They were a reasonable price and neat and tidy, so I bought them,” he says.
“I slowly bred them up, and ended up buying another 12 cows from Shepparton about five years down the track just to build numbers up to get to where I am.
“I’m always looking for a good type cow, but they have got to produce as well. I’m not here for the show side of it.
“The original cows I bought were both registered herds, but they were never ever transferred. Some cows are registered, but I’m in the process of getting everything else done through genetic recovery and getting it all up to date. I’ll end up with a whole registered herd.”
He says he has milked Friesians in the past, but he got sick of looking at black-and-white cows.
“I’ve always liked Jerseys. I’ve always liked the colour – that’s what got my eye when I was younger. And they’ve always been easy to handle. As soon as I could get into buying my own, that’s the road I went down.”
He says it helps to have smaller-framed Jerseys when he is doing everything by himself. For example, it’s much easier to give Jerseys a hand to roll over when they are stuck.
Warren is a member of the South Gippsland Jersey Breeders Club, and five years ago started entering the club’s on-farm challenges.
He has won many awards, including a first prize in 2010.
In 2012, he won three seconds, one third and one fourth place when the club announced results at an event held on October 31 at the Leongatha RSL club. The results made Warren the second most successful breeder in the SGJBC 2012 competition.
He says the cow he had expected to do the best only came in fourth, but he was happy that two of his two-year-olds won second and third prizes.
“That means that things are looking pretty good for future years,” he says.
“The on-farm challenges are a good thing because I haven’t got the time to be showing cows.

“It’s a good way to get people to come and look at my cows and see whether they think they are any good.
“I usually try to get to the presentation, and every year I’ve managed to get a place of some description.”
Warren thinks he has improved his herd by discussing sire selection with other breeders.
He also enters inter-breed on-farm competitions at Yarram and Warrigal, where one of his cows in 2011 came second in the three-year-old class.
The inter-breed challenges also allow him to benchmark his Jerseys against other breeds, confirming the wisdom of his decision to run a pure Jersey herd.
In the past five years, he has also been working on “corrective mating” with local breeding consultant Brad Aitken of Leading Edge Genetics.
The consultant comes twice a year to visually inspect and score his two year olds. He runs this data through a computer program to come up with recommendations for corrective mating.
Warren recalls that he started breeding with a fairly simple philosophy of selecting sires with good ratings for milk production, type and mammary systems.
But it soon became too difficult to remember in his head all the relationships in his herd. “That’s why I went down the road of corrective mating to help me out,” he says.
However, he still keeps an old-fashioned watch on production levels. “At the end of the day, that pays the bills, you’ve got to keep and eye on it,” he says.
Warren says the corrective-mating program has improved his herd.
“The last couple of years, the heifers have improved as they have calved,” he says. “There are probably not as many failures, especially in the udder and the ligaments, and that sort of thing.”
He admits that he was a bit nervous when his farm was chosen for a farm visit during the 2012 Jersey Australia annual general meeting and conference held in South Gippsland.
It was “a bit daunting” to have national and international Jersey figures bussed onto a farm he calls “a no-frills operation”.
“But I was hoping they would see something that they would like when they were here,” he says. “I picked out 20-odd cows that I like to look at, and let them have a look.”
At the time, Warren had some of the first Alta Galaxy heifers to calve in Australia, leading to much discussion with the visitors about sire selection.
Warren notes the comments of the international experts who visited his farm about how Australian breeders are well placed to take advantage of an expected doubling in the size of the world jersey herd in the next few years.
He says he might one day be able to export cattle, embryos, genetics and expertise, but at this stage he’s still concentrating on improving his own herd.
“I’m just trying to get to my own level, where I’d like to be,” he says.
“It’s a good way to get people to come and look at my cows and see whether they
think they are any good.”
